Diner Reviews
  • "The White Horse Tavern is one of oldest taverns in the world with a rich history. It's a wonderful experience to be able to dine there. The food is fabulous and the service is wonderful. I had the caesar salad with homemade caesar dressing and whole anchovies if you want them - delicious! All of their entrees are amazing, but I had their signature dish, Beef Wellington in a puff pastry with foie gras. The filet was tender and the red wine reduction they served it with was delicious. My nephew ordered for dessert the fried cheesecake bites, rolled in cinnamon sugar, served with caramel - it was amazing! Great night!"

  • "My father is handicapped, and although the restaurant had ample parking, the streets in the area were under construction, and we could not access the parking lot. Amber greeted me, and immediately made parking arrangements with a neighboring hotel. She also made sure all of my father's needs were met, and did so as if it were a normal day-to-day process. Our meal and drinks were fabulous, our server was charming, and the history in this tavern should not be missed. Anyone heading to Newport must experience this gem. I'm in the quality field, and this was the best service I've received this century!"

  • "Went to The White Horse Tavern for the 1st time for our 33rd anniversary. UNFORTUNATELY there was a large party in the center of the room and another large party with 2 small children that completely ruined our night. In addition, the 1st large party had another group join then at a nearby table 30 minutes later and they yelled across the room. Not only did we request another table (which they did grant), so did the 4 other groups that they tried seating on the 2nd floor. Even though we were able to move, it ruin the evening. The food was FABULOUS, beef wellington and scallops. However we wanted to quickly eat and get out of there. I know that large parties do make reservations, but then don't put parties of 2 right next to them."

  • "Food was good, service was ok. I asked our server what he recommended and he said the Lobster, the most expensive thing on the menu. Personally, I never trust servers that automatically recommend the most expensive thing on the menu. We could tell he just did not know what to say, perhaps because he does not know the menu very well. He also couldn't remember who ordered what when the food was ready. This seemed a bit silly, since there were not that many of us. However, the history and ambience are fantastic, so it's definitely worth a visit."

  • "The White Horse Tavern in Newport, RI, is not only the oldest restaurant in the US, it is also a great contempporary table. The ambience take you back to the 17th century, while the food, the wine list and the service are in perfect harmony with the 21st century. I would say that this is more than a restaurant; it is a journey in history and in the art of " fine cuisine"."

  • "Great food and service. Very accomodating to kids. Our wait staff was the best and the building is amazing."

  • "Brunch for 8. Had a reservation so they should have been prepared. Food came out in waves. Some were almost finished by the time the last person got their meal. Drinks had to be repeatedly ordered or asked for. We were there for much longer than we planned because of how slow everything was. Food was ok, but given the poor service (and all the other options in Newport), I would not go back."

  • "We went to the White Horse Tavern for Sunday brunch and were not disappointed. Our waitress was friendly and welcoming and our meals were to die for. The grilled cheese and lobster bisque was perfect. Our one complaint was that it was unbelievably dark inside. We could barely read our menus."

  • "The food has been consistently wonderful with a waitstaff that feel better than home. They are so kind, classy and friendly. There is a charm in the interior that is equally great. All good! Highly recommend but probably not for kids."

  • "This was our second time, the history and lore of this building is amazing!!! A regular stop on the ghost tour... Our meal was pleasant - the menu was completely different from the year before, except for the Beef Wellington - which I could not wait to try this year. My husband had the Veal Chop special and we shared the lobster and corn fritters. The meal was delish, all-in all. The corn fritters were a bit raw in the center and inconsistent with lobster pieces. Our main meals were very tasty and presented well. Dessert, the cookie sandwich - too much chocolate cookie and the banana/caramel flavors were strange together. Our waitress made the night!!! Very attentive, genuine and knew her stuff. We hope to be back - it is a gem!!!!!!!!"

  • "A neat historic inn with wonderful service. The prices really shocked us. The food was good, but not outstanding which I would have expected for the prices. Two people for dinner, one shared appetizer, one glass of wine, no desserts - with tip was $80 per person."

  • "Definitely pricey, but a great meal with second-to-none service. Perfect for a special occasion. You won't be disappointed!!"

  • "We had made our reservation 3 weeks in advance. When we arrived there were many open tables in dining room and upstairs dining. Yet we were stuck in a corner of the bar area with waiters and bar patrons walking by us and standing over us. Made for uncomfortable dinner. Even our waiter forgot to come check on us. We will not return."

  • "We celebrated our 40th anniversary at the White Horse Tavern. We had a window table with a view of Marlborough Street which entertained us while we were waiting for our food. We each tried the clam chowder which was delicious with a hint of dill. We ordered beef wellington and the beef tenderloin with a side of hand cut fries with truffle mayo. Everything was superb. We finished with the triple silk dessert and agreed that it was one of our best dinners ever."

  • "We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door and the hostess seated us right away. We love the historic setting and quaint feel of the dining areas. Both our meals were well presented and prepared. I ordered the statler chicken and it was cooked well without being dried out. My wife enjoyed the swordfish. The lettuce in the salad was crisp and the dressing was light but very tasty."

  • "We went here for our anniversary diner the first weekend in June, it wasn't too hot out. The food and service were good. The only compliant we have is it was very hot upstairs during our meal. If we go back and the weather is the same, I may ask to sit outside."

  • "Expected a romantic setting....I even requested flowers with my online reservation and wife got NOTHING. Plus, we were seated next to 4 older men who drank too much and were in the middle of a business deal. Way too hot and she humorously told us to crack the window....which would not budge....thanks for nothing WHT."

  • "We enjoyed our lunch much more then we anticipated. Victoria was very helpful & made excellent recommendations. The service was great & our food was served promptly. It was amazing to how well they have preserved a little bit of history. Definitely would recommend!!"

  • "We had a delicious dinner. Atmosphere was perfect. Staff was knowledgeable about the history of the White Horse Tavern. The best part of the evening was having after dinner drinks at the quaint bar where the bartender regaled us with stories of the ghosts that inhabited the establishment. He loves his job and we had a wonderful evening."

  • "One of our favorite Newport restaurants. The food is delicious, the atmospher unique. The Bloody Mary is a perfect addition to Sunday brunch :) "

  • "Overall the dinning experience is quite good but expected better food. My wife is a vegetarian and there was only one option on the menu and it was quite bland. She had to add large amounts of pepper and some salt for there to be any taste. I had the beef wellington which was very good as was the cheese appetizer and dessert. Our server, Lisa, was outstanding. She knew the menu and was very attentive without being overbearing. For ambiance you can't beat the place, you feel as though you stepped into a time machine back to the 1700's. "

  • "The butter was frozen, bread rubbery as though it had been heated in the microwave, and my swordfish was over cooked and dry. My husband's catch of the day (sea bass) had too fussy a preparation. My mixed drink (Manhattan) was excellent. The atmosphere was charming and authentic. "

  • "Alyssa and Chef Silvia were absolute gems in helping me coordinate my mother's 80th birthday brunch at White Horse Tavern. We wanted a low-key environment, and we had a gluten-free child in the party, so I emailed ahead of time to see what accommodations could be made especially for the allergy component. I was delighted to hear from both Chef Silvia and Alyssa, the event coordinator, immediately, and was immediately put at ease that we'd have a memorable event. The staff was delightful, and I was so grateful to have a waiter who took such care to check and double check regarding the gluten free factor. It was a delightful day had by all, and I can't wait to go back!"

  • "We found a reservation here at a reasonable time on crowded Memorial Day weekend when most other places were booked. After dining there i know why there was an opening. The experience was off to a bad start, as the server mocked a question my wife asked about the restaurant and it was down hill from there. The only thing that we ordered that was good were our salads. Our apps, entrees, and sides were below average and overpriced. There was a large and loud party in the small upstairs room where we were seated, and again, the server was quite bad- not friendly or attentive. The cool thing about this place is that is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the US. So if you are really big on history, maybe that will do it for you."

  • "We returned to the WHT for the first time in 20 years. We live in MD and had a memorable meal there while on our honeymoon. Back in Newport for our 20th and found the WHT just as memorable as before--don't think it will take us 20 years to get back again! "

  • "Long time Newport visitor, but first time at the White Horse. Overall, an excellent experience. Enjoyed the rustic charm, old colonial atmosphere. Food and service was very good. The place seemed to be very well run and clean. Will definitely go back. "

  • "The ambiance of The White Horse Tavern is perfect. The night we were there, a full moon appeared and the soft warm glow illuminated our walk from the parking lot through the tiny garden to the door. The service was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the comfortable colonial ambiance of the dining room. This was my guest's choice for his birthday dinner and I felt confident that the food would be delicious. The menu was enticing and the specials included fresh local fish. My companion enjoyed his dinner immensely. I was shocked that everything from my lobster bisque - which wasn't a bisque but a delicious lobster broth - was tepid. My steak dinner was actually cold. Room temperature I would have understood but cold? Dessert was perfect."

  • "Had lunch based on friend recommendation. The history of the tavern provides an intriguing backdrop. Food was very good. My wife and I had the soup d'jour and it was very tasty. My wife raved about the toasted cheese sandwich. She said "It was the best toast and cheese sandwich I ever had." You must also have the fries appetizer. It is worth having lunch there. By the way, dinner was awesome as well. "

  • "My GF and I were in Newport for a week in April. We dined at a night when it was cold and rainy. There were a few people there, and it seemed like we had the whole place to ourselves. We were seated next to a big roaring fire which felt great. Overall, the food was very good. My chowder and scallops entree were tasty but not mind blowing. My GF enjoyed her beef entree with risotto. Their signature dessert was probably best dish for me. "

  • "We had another lovely dinner at the contry's oldest continuously running tavern. It's nice to have a place where the food is consistently good. The scallops were sweet and clean (no annoying grit here), and the risotto was quite tasty. The portions are not too big and not too small so no leftovers (which is good if your visiting Newport) but you're not left hungry either. And they still make the best dark & stormy in town!! This time was a special treat because we had dinner so early that we had the room to ourselves for the most part. It did start to fill up when we were finishing our desserts, though. But it never got too loud. The old tavern atmosphere is quite cozy. Perfect for celebrating our fifth wedding anniversary. Don't miss it!"

  • "This was our first time in Newport and someone in Mystic CT recommended this restaurant. It was spectacular - great atmosphere - and the food was wonderful! Beef Wellington in particular was exceptional!"

  • "Typical historic tavern, rather dark, steep narrow stairs, and very noisy. Food however was excellent, the server was very knowledgeable and explained everything. Rather pricey, but a la carte sides weren't necessary as the entree had sides of its own."
