  • "Went here for our anniversary while visiting Newport. Found the food to be good as well as the service. We aren't seafood eaters or seek out venison or rabbit as they were serving. My steak was delicious but my husbands was average. Overall, we weren't blown away and think its on the pricy side. Good experience but not fabulous."

  • "We started with the lobster Mac & cheese appetizer, two were plenty and it is simply terrific. Lots of juicy lobster in a lovely cheese sauce with fresh asparagus and pasta shells. Magnificent! I had their signature Beef Wellington which is superb. Perfect, flaky crust with a very generous portion of tenderloin in a foie gras coating, most excellent. Very good wine list, service was timely. Dessert was sinful and delicious. The butterscotch bread pudding was a home run. I have eaten here before, many years ago, and bringing family and friends here for a celebration was extremely well-received. You get what you pay for, a memorable and wonderful dining experience. A bit pricey, but no problem for special occasions. We shall be back!"

  • "It was a little disappointing, because the food wasn't that great. The service was very slow even though there weren't many people dinning in at the time. You will be paying for the name and the history of the place rather than your food, unfortunately."

  • "Dark dining room. We started with a Duck Scotch Egg that was tasty but seemed a bit over cooked with a completely hard yolk. Next we had a Caesar salad and lobster bisque. The Caesar was marginal. But the bisque was terrible. It was a roux and sherry slurry that was luke warm and had zero lobster. One chunk that was hoped to be lobster turned out to be a floor lump. Entrees were the Tavern Burger, ordered medium, and the Pork Chop with Choirico Vinigrette. My wife's burger was way over cooked, ruining what seemed like a great burger while my pork chop was so undercooked I did not eat the whole thing. With the darkness, I thought my chop was medium which would have been perfect. But as I got closer to the bone it was completely raw."

  • "This was our second time here and we'll definitely return. A bit over-attentive staff but that's better than non-attentive. The first time we ate of the regular menu and the meal was superb. This time we had the Wednesday burger night special and it was also excellent and quite reasonable priced. If the regular menu is too expensive go on burger night."

  • "The food is really good, but the experience of sitting in the oldest tavern in the country is the best! The wait staff was attentive and the ambiance was fantastic. Great photos all around, and if you are reading about the history of Newport, you will see the White Horse Tavern mentioned many times with reference to trials in the early 1700's, held right here, and it just makes the meal complete!"

  • "We headed here to celebrate a special occasion. There was a nice selection of entrees that would appeal to most people. We had a nightly special appetizer of grilled shrimp with paper thin sliced fingerling potatoes. The shrimp were outstanding, moist and large, and the potatoes were not greasy and very, very good. I had the scallops with, what I thought were roasted cauliflower and ramp. The veggies did not seem to be my idea of roasted and the portions were merely decorative with three very small pieces of cauliflower. The scallops were tasty. My husband had the lamb chops which were ample and nicely presented on a bed of red rice. The caramel bread pudding was an amazing way to conclude our meal. You have to try it."

  • "My father is handicapped, and although the restaurant had ample parking, the streets in the area were under construction, and we could not access the parking lot. Amber greeted me, and immediately made parking arrangements with a neighboring hotel. She also made sure all of my father's needs were met, and did so as if it were a normal day-to-day process. Our meal and drinks were fabulous, our server was charming, and the history in this tavern should not be missed. Anyone heading to Newport must experience this gem. I'm in the quality field, and this was the best service I've received this century!"

  • "Food was good, service was ok. I asked our server what he recommended and he said the Lobster, the most expensive thing on the menu. Personally, I never trust servers that automatically recommend the most expensive thing on the menu. We could tell he just did not know what to say, perhaps because he does not know the menu very well. He also couldn't remember who ordered what when the food was ready. This seemed a bit silly, since there were not that many of us. However, the history and ambience are fantastic, so it's definitely worth a visit."

  • "Before the 5 July dinner we have dinned there last in 1983. In 1983 it was a memorable experience with diners who were appropriately dressed and an impressive wine list. I wore a jacket but the restaurant required business casual. Aparently business casual now includes I was shorts and flip flops. I was surprised by the number of poorly dressed diners and felt out of place. Only one other person in the up stairs dinning room wore a jacket. The rest were mostly variants of beach attire. The food was pretty good but nothing to get exited about. The magic of going there was gone by the time we left. The White Horse has a great history but it is no longer the fine dining establishment that I once knew."

  • "The White Horse Tavern is one of oldest taverns in the world with a rich history. It's a wonderful experience to be able to dine there. The food is fabulous and the service is wonderful. I had the caesar salad with homemade caesar dressing and whole anchovies if you want them - delicious! All of their entrees are amazing, but I had their signature dish, Beef Wellington in a puff pastry with foie gras. The filet was tender and the red wine reduction they served it with was delicious. My nephew ordered for dessert the fried cheesecake bites, rolled in cinnamon sugar, served with caramel - it was amazing! Great night!"

  • "Went to The White Horse Tavern for the 1st time for our 33rd anniversary. UNFORTUNATELY there was a large party in the center of the room and another large party with 2 small children that completely ruined our night. In addition, the 1st large party had another group join then at a nearby table 30 minutes later and they yelled across the room. Not only did we request another table (which they did grant), so did the 4 other groups that they tried seating on the 2nd floor. Even though we were able to move, it ruin the evening. The food was FABULOUS, beef wellington and scallops. However we wanted to quickly eat and get out of there. I know that large parties do make reservations, but then don't put parties of 2 right next to them."

  • "This was our second time, the history and lore of this building is amazing!!! A regular stop on the ghost tour... Our meal was pleasant - the menu was completely different from the year before, except for the Beef Wellington - which I could not wait to try this year. My husband had the Veal Chop special and we shared the lobster and corn fritters. The meal was delish, all-in all. The corn fritters were a bit raw in the center and inconsistent with lobster pieces. Our main meals were very tasty and presented well. Dessert, the cookie sandwich - too much chocolate cookie and the banana/caramel flavors were strange together. Our waitress made the night!!! Very attentive, genuine and knew her stuff. We hope to be back - it is a gem!!!!!!!!"

Drinks had to be repeatedly ordered or asked for. We were there for much longer than we planned because of how slow everything was. Food was ok, but given the poor service (and all the other options in Newport), I would not go back."

  • "We celebrated our 40th anniversary at the White Horse Tavern. We had a window table with a view of Marlborough Street which entertained us while we were waiting for our food. We each tried the clam chowder which was delicious with a hint of dill. We ordered beef wellington and the beef tenderloin with a side of hand cut fries with truffle mayo. Everything was superb. We finished with the triple silk dessert and agreed that it was one of our best dinners ever."

Both our meals were well presented and prepared. I ordered the statler chicken and it was cooked well without being dried out. My wife enjoyed the swordfish. The lettuce in the salad was crisp and the dressing was light but very tasty."

  • "We had made our reservation 3 weeks in advance. When we arrived there were many open tables in dining room and upstairs dining. Yet we were stuck in a corner of the bar area with waiters and bar patrons walking by us and standing over us. Made for uncomfortable dinner. Even our waiter forgot to come check on us. We will not return."

  • "Overall the dinning experience is quite good but expected better food. My wife is a vegetarian and there was only one option on the menu and it was quite bland. She had to add large amounts of pepper and some salt for there to be any taste. I had the beef wellington which was very good as was the cheese appetizer and dessert. Our server, Lisa, was outstanding. She knew the menu and was very attentive without being overbearing. For ambiance you can't beat the place, you feel as though you stepped into a time machine back to the 1700's. "

  • "Alyssa and Chef Silvia were absolute gems in helping me coordinate my mother's 80th birthday brunch at White Horse Tavern. We wanted a low-key environment, and we had a gluten-free child in the party, so I emailed ahead of time to see what accommodations could be made especially for the allergy component. I was delighted to hear from both Chef Silvia and Alyssa, the event coordinator, immediately, and was immediately put at ease that we'd have a memorable event. The staff was delightful, and I was so grateful to have a waiter who took such care to check and double check regarding the gluten free factor. It was a delightful day had by all, and I can't wait to go back!"
