Diner Reviews
  • "The last time my wife and I dined here, it was lunch, and we thought it was very good. This time we thought we would try it for dinner since it was my wife's birthday. She ordered a steak dish, and said it was very good. I ordered a steak as well, a la carte, and apparently there were several sauces available. I was not asked which sauce I wanted, but was presented with a au povre sauce with pepper corns, which I don't care for. The steak was also tough and chewy. I am going to just say it was a bad night for the steak, but my wife's was good."

  • "My wife and I have been going to Newport for 20 years and decided to try White Horse Tavern during Newport Restaurant week. For a restaurant that has such a wonderful reputation the food was a great Disappointment. The mushroom appetizer was tasteless. The veal ragu was laden with too many noodles. It reminded me of my youth when my mother was trying to stretch a meal to feed many children. The chocolate lava cake was good but the presentation could have used more pizzaz. A dallop of whip cream and some chocolate curls on top would have been nice especially from a restaurant with such a wonderful reputation. The room we were in was stark; there were no curtains on the windows."

  • "Very cool old building with lots of history. The good was pretty good. Not over the top spectacular, but good. The appeal was really I'm the history and the charm of the building. There was a fire going and it was dimly lit. There are paintings of historical visitors and when we asked our waitress about the history she spoke on it a bit and have us a helpful brochure. All in all it was fun to go to the oldest tavern in the US!"

  • "What a treat! The historic ambiance of the tavern is unique, the atmosphere wonderful. We were here for restaurant week and the menu was varied. Our table had a sample from each part of the menu - the taste, presentation and quality of the food was perfect! Our server was wonderful. The bar area small, but full of flavor. Will be back!"

  • "A friend and I went to the White Horse Tavern yesterday for Newport's Restaurant week. We had a wonderful lunch, which included a cup of white chowder, a most delicious crab&potato cake with dressed arugula and an oversized chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Perfect lunch for 16.00 without tax and tip. Since I was there I had to indulge in their famous Dark & Stormy drink. Food & service was great. If I had one complaint it would be about a large, noisy table (10-12) of young people. Why do people think it's okay to talk so loudly that everyone can hear their conversations? We were relieved when they left. The history, food and service, at The White Horse are the best. The trend of noisy restaurants seems to reach everywhere lately."

  • "The White Horse Tavern is an exceptional restaurant that is almost 350 years old. The beams and the size of the rooms testify to this as it can be snug. Its large fireplace keeps things cozy and charming without being cloying or over the top. Service is professional and unstuffy, and quite attentive. It was Restaurant Week during our last visit which usually means a slightly altered menu: this time around there weren't as many choises as on the regular menu, but the food was well prepared and attractively presented. Duck Scotch Egg was amazing and the Cheese Board too, though the bread served with it was flavorless. Veal Ragu and Beef Wellington were wonderful. Dessert was Creme Brûlée and was very good. An enjoyable night."

  • "We did not realize there was a dress code, so we were sat in the bar room. Not a big deal, got a seat by a fireplace, food was very good in general. Beef Wellington was excellent. Would go again to check out "business casual" dining area."

  • "We had a great meal, went with 3 colleagues. Food overall was excellent, loved the scotched duck egg it was amazing. We all had several courses (several great apps and desserts) but I would say that I thought the swordfish and cod main courses were disappointing. Everything else was great. Alcohol selection was good but not cheap, ran up the bill a larger than normal amount."

  • "Went for lunch during Restaurant Week. Sat at a table next to the fireplace on a crisp spring day - perfect. Menu had excellent options despite being fixed. Food was very good - not overly plentiful, but just right for a lunch. Would recommend."

  • "While this was restaurant week, we felt the choices were a little dull and not up to the standard of the White Horse. The sole exception was the ravioli."

  • "Excellent lunch. We went for lunch, sat in front of a large fireplace, very quaint. I had the truffle fries which were delicious and would highly recommend them. Everything was delicious and presented so nicely. I would definitely go back again and bring others."

  • "My wife and I give ourselves an occasional weekend treat. This week we stayed at a nearly perfect bed & breakfast - comfortable king size four poster bed, flat screen TV, hair dryer and great shower. Our Saturday night dinner at White Horse fit right in."

  • "We made a reservation not knowing it was restaurant week in Newport. Loved the idea of the price fix menu. Was surprised by the size of the appetizer and dessert portion (full size and very large). The beef wellington was perfectly cooked, the mussel appetizer was delicious - maybe the best thing on the menu. The restaurant was pure old New England, small cozy rooms and traditional decor. The restaurant can be very romantic. Our waitress was pleasant. We enjoyed our evening very much and would go back again."

  • "I have eaten many times at the White Horse Tavern over the years, and have also enjoyed its delightful bar. It is one of my favorite places in Newport. This 1673 tavern is the oldest one operating in the US. It has been beautifully restored and maintained. The relatively small rooms provide intimate spaces for fine dining. The food is always great (lunch and dinner) and the service is exceptional. It is particularly cozy in the winter, when there is a nice fire in the large fireplace."

  • "The colonial feel and coziness combined with tasty food makes it a pleasant choice for dinner. We were not inspired by the dessert menu, so passed on it. Would have liked to see a choice of fruit tart/cake,"

  • "The White Horse Tavern has the tastiest food in Newport for sure. There was a party going on upstairs so it was a little noisy, but that was fine with us! The whole building is beautiful and makes for such a happy dinning experience. The roaring fireplace was a dazzling touch. A bit on the expensive side, but that's what makes it so perfect for that special occasion!"

  • "My husband and I wanted to go somewhere special for our anniversary and picked here from the reviews. The waitress was very sweet, but the busboy was hovering around setting up to the point of becoming aggravating. The food was OK, it was salty, and the veal wasn't cooked properly. For the price it wasn't worth it and we won't be back."

  • "Food was not the best but a nice place to go if you like history or are having a special event."

  • "We came to Newport this weekend for our anniversary and since it was so busy and packed from the St. Patrick's Day Parade, we decided to find a restaurant with great food that wouldn't attract the bar / pub crowd so we could actually enjoy the evening. The White Horse was an absolutely fantastic choice and the food was spectacular. We had the New England clam chowder to start, which was amazing, and a caesar salad which was a little different than what we were used to. The salad was very delicious, but for the price, getting 4 romaine leaves on a plate with a little bit of dressing hardly warranted the 8 or 9 dollar price tag, albeit being delicious. We had the short rib risotto special and beef wellington which were both 10/10."

  • "We had an exceptional evening - thanks in large part to the superlative service by Nicholas The food was equally extraordinary - after twenty years of special nights -we rated this as one of the finest anniversary evenings We save our special occassions for the White Horse! Thanks"

  • "My wife and I have enjoyed this establishment on multiple occasions over some 20 years. We recommended it to many. This past weeks experience was, I hope, an unfortunate outlier. My main course, the pork loin on special, arrived to the table just warm to the touch. This was either a kitchen issue or service issue. Our waiter did not return to check on the meals after it was delivered, and we had to flag down house staff to correct the situation. I should not have to have my food reheated, which what appeared happened. The drinks and appetizers were very good as usual. We will return, cautiously but will hold on further recommendation to friends until I am assured this was a random experience. We certainly hope it was"

  • "There's nothing that beats the ambiance of the oldest tavern in the US for a dining experience. Built in 1673, occupied by the British during the Revolution, and only closed after that during the few short years of Prohibition, the White Horse Tavern has beamed ceilings, low lighting, and a nearly wall-long fireplace that is going in the winter and thoughtfully attended by all of the wait staff when needed. Staff is knowledgeable about the food, the history, and is very attentive. My only complaint was that my dinner, catch of the day, was hardly warm when delivered, tho I didn't complain about it. It was cooked perfectly, just not warm. Otherwise, great wine list, fantastic desserts, and my companion's Beef Wellington was superb!"

  • "I chose the White Horse Tavern based on other written and verbal reviews & also because I love vintage homes. The ambiance is wonderful roaring fires everywhere but be sure to ask for hearthside seating. We were seated at a window and while it was a good people watching spot, it was extremely drafty, even with drawing lined drapes and using a rolled up napkin as a draft doger. Food was just ok, especially in view of the cost. I had hoped for a better selection. Cesear salad was disappointing but the dessert, a tri-chocolate mousse, was outstanding. My chicken was uninspired but my husband enjoyed he pork dish. I understand there was recent ownership change, so will try one more time."

  • "We live on Long Island, but have been making the trip up to Newport to visit the White Horse for years. Never disappoints. It is billed as the oldest Inn in the US, and it looks the part (in a good way). The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, and the food first rate."

  • "I took my bf here for his birthday. Neither of us had been before, and I think we found our new favorite "special occasion" restaurant. Every part of the experience was perfect; the food, service, atmosphere, everything! We were sat right next to the gigantic fireplace and it was so cozy I didn't want to leave. We shared three appetizers: the cheese plate, charcuterrie plate, and duck Scotch egg - yum! We split the lobster mac n cheese which contained HUGE pieces of lobster. I'm talking whole claws. Then we had their signature dessert, White Horse Triple Silk, which is bliss on a plate. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, even the beer. It's expensive, but so worth it for a special occasion."

  • "Our party of 6 had a terrific lunch to celebrate a special birthday for one in our group. We were made to feel very welcome, not rushed, as we waited for our entire group to arrive. Drinks and food were excellent. Service was spectaculr-our waiter was very attentive, professional and friendly. We are ready for another visit!"

  • "I had the lobster mac and cheese and it was outstanding. Not too heavy. Great flavor. My wife order the cheeseburger for lunch and it was tasty and very nice. The restaurant had both fire places going, even in the bar. The White Horse Tavern has the look and feel inside of one of the oldest buildings in North America. You could almost envision George Washington walking those hallways and rooms like he did while you were there. And the service staff was exceptional. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "We celebrated early as we had an evening engagement......White Horse is a very special gem in Newport! The spinach chicken soup was good, not great. The chowder was wonderful as was the lobster BLT brimming with lobster. My favorite is the grilled Gouda with pesto on a baguette, can't wait to return for lunch this month . We sat in front of the roaring fire with snow outside the old windowpanes and felt warm and snug in this beautiful place. Our server Stephen was attentive, personable and made our visit memorable. The Bloody Mary's were intoxicating! Kidding aside, they were a nice size, well made and visually attractive.A visit for lunch or dinner is a must when in the city by the sea."

  • "My wife and I, frequent visitors to Newport, had never tried the White Horse Tavern. We we thrilled with the experience. The staff was exceptional, from the hostess to the bartender and, especially, our waiter, Nick. The food was excellent - we started with the clam chowder, followed by the cod & scallops, and finished with the house-made lava cake/chocolate bar. Wow. We would recommend this as a great fall/winter spot."

  • "I reserved a table for two for valentines dinner as did everyone else I saw there that evening of course. We showed up early and we were seated right away....we were unexpectedly offered a private room which was very nice.... the fireplaces throughout the tavern set a warm and welcoming atmoshpere. The service was great, the food perfect and served hot and timely. The manager was playing cupid throughout the evening with her delivery of a complimentary single long stemed rose for each lady (nice touch). After dinner we spent some time at the bar which was equally pleasent. The young lady tending bar was professional and attentive to our needs. Simply a great night and nice place to be!"
