A word from The Whistling Bird
The Whistling Bird is back. A regional favorite for years, we are happy to offer our friends and neighbors on the Range a taste of the Caribbean good life once again. Old favorites and new inspirations alike will dazzle your senses and tempt your appetite. Couple that with friendly staff and some of the finest tropical and tiki cocktails in the midwest, and it's winner winner jerk chicken dinner!

From the beginning our mission has been simple: to resurrect the best of the Whistling Bird's past, and elevate it to a new, even higher level of quality, taste and fun! We know you're going to like it. It would be hard not to.

  • "We enjoy going to the Whistling Bird because they are consistent.. My fave being Black and Bleu steak.. very good.. tender, and love the sauce.. Others had pork tenderloin and the linguine with lobster and shrimp.. They were delicious also, tho a few more chunks of lobster woulda been welcome!! Its a sweet little restaurant.. a little gem of a place in Gilbert Mn.. We go mostly for special occasions. The prices may seem high, but to get quality, you dont mind paying more.."

  • "Really a fun evening. Interesting cocktails and food. A glitch with one of our entrees (brought the wrong one) but nice recovery by the waitress and complimentary dessert saved the day. Long drive but worth it."

We recommend this resturant to all of our frieds, family and also business associates. The service was excellent and the way the staff made us feel special on our 20th anniversary was remarkable.   • "Our neighbors had never been at the Whistling Bird and we hadn't been back since it re-opened. We were all happy with our visit this past week. I loved the coconut shrimp and others had jerk pork, Jambalaya, and seafood. Everyone was very happy with their selection. The service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a hurry. The online reservation center was easy to use! I loved the Miami vice cocktail."

  • "Family (adult siblings, spouses, and parents) met from a variety of places (Iowa, Kentucky, Twin Cities, Grand Rapids, Africa) for a long weekend at Giants Ridge Resort, and we wanted a nice dinner to kick off the weekend; The Whistling Bird fit the bill perfectly! We had 13 people, and two waitresses served our group. There were a variety of tastes, but everyone was able to find a dish that they enjoyed (I had the jerked pork tenderloin and it was fabulous!). Using two servers helped ensure everyone got quick and responsive attention."

  • "The Whistling Bird is a foodie must when you are anywhere near the town of Gilbert. The menu offers a range of great selections, with a special emphasis on Jamaican jerk and other spice combinations. Our evening included a terrific lamb curry over rice special and the gouda/pork soup was fantastic. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. The pork tenderloin with spicy jerk is my favorite and it was prepared perfectly...again! The special cocktails are expertly prepared and are truly refreshing. This place is not to be missed."

  • "As I come to the area on occasion and always have had a hard time to find good places to eat that are a little out of the ordinary I was happy to see Whistling Bird back. I used Open Table to book for dining, which was nice but it only allowed me to book two times, 5 or 8 pm....neither of them suited me, but took the 5. I had the Negril Jerk platter and the shrimp and pork were nice and tender and juicy but the chicken was a bit dry. I liked the jerk sauce, but it could have been a bit spicier. The service was great, friendly and attentive enough to enjoy the meal on my own."

  • "This was our first time at Whistling Bird. Our server was Brianna - she was EXCELLENT and if I could give more than 5 stars for her I would. She kept water glasses filled, checked often about how we were doing, gave tips (such as "you will need to stir that dressing" or "watch out, that stew is very hot"). The food - EXCELLENT -again I wish I could give more than 5 stars. It was served on a timely basis as well - not too fast and not too slow. We were able to enjoy our appetizers before the salads were served. Food portions are quite large and I felt the cost was very reasonable. Our server graciously boxed up our left-overs. She also wrote on the container where it was from, what was inside and the date. We will DEFINATELY be back!"

  • "Northern Minnesota is not known for it's Jamaican restaurants... but the Whistling Bird will change that! It is a fun restaurant with spicy food and great mojitos. We were up here biking on the Mesabi Trail (a spectacular, paved bike trail that runs about 100 miles) and enjoyed an abundant meal in a fun atmosphere. Service was very good and quite friendly."

  • "The food was excellent our group of six had orders from the Jamaican Jerked Pork, to the Linguini w/ garlicky shrimp & lobster and the Gaucho Steak. Everything was cooked to perfection, so flavorful and very filling! Don't leave with out having a "Dirty Banana" or "Miami Vice" cocktail for dessert! Our waitress was phenomenal, all and all it was a great experience! We can't wait to go back!"

The time between appetizers and salads to our main dish seemed to be timed well , never felt like we were rushed.   • "The authentic Jamaican cuisine offers something for everyone. The presentation is beautiful, and the taste outstanding. The only bad thing that can be said is a persons stomach isn't big enough to try it all. Definitely worth the trip to this small town for a meal with such big taste."

  • "The Whistling Bird is legendary. They are so popular that you should book a table well in advance. The atmosphere is magical, it transplants you right into the tropics and you instantly forget that you are in Gilbert MN. It's cozy with staff that are friendly and excited to greet you. The food is 100% authentic, always fresh, and there always seems to be something new to try. For starters their homemade soups, bread, garlic oil, garlic butter, and salad dressings are incredibly rich with flavors I haven't tasted else where. Main dish portions are generous and well prepared. You can't replicate this experience, you are sure to have a remember-able night. This place deserves to be reviewed on the Food Network or by any food critic. Enjoy!"

  • "Our server was very attentive from moment we stepped in the door! Ahi tuna was prepared to perfection - quick sear & rare. Soups/salads were outstanding. Only reason for 4 stars on food was due to the jerk tenderloin being a bit dry; while pork tenderloin is naturally dry, would have expected some mitigation of this by the chef. We were there on a Monday, so it wasn't terribly crowded; given the openness to the bar area, I expect that the noise level would be much greater on a weekend. We will go back again to try other dishes!"

  • "We dined with a group of six and were perfectly accommodated from the moment we walked in the door. We were told we could be seated immediately or relax at the bar before dinner. The bartender described many of the drinks from the great list of Hemingway-like libations and engaged us in wonderful conversation before being seated for dinner. Our waitress was excellent and readily admitted when she needed to seek answers to our questions about selections and ingredients. It is rare that every member of a party is perfectly satisfied with their selection and its preparation. Our dinners were excellently prepared and professionally served. We are glad that The Bird is back! It is worth the drive to get away from your standard fare! "

  • "The sounds of top 40 hit in steel drum style is gross. Margaritaville style music is also gross. Jimmy Buffet is never appropriate. EVER. More Marley, more groovy island vibe muzak would be an improvement to what we had to endure. Otherwise a fantastic food experience."

Tuna came out past medium rare, cooked all the way through in portions. It was like the grill was not hot enough for the sear. Good overall though. "

There were lots of empty tables at 5:45 on a Monday so the experience was quiet and intimate. Just the way we like it. The special, filet with shrimp, crab, avocado and bernaise sauce was very good, as was the gumbo soup of the day special. "
