"I love everything about the Whaling Bar except for one thing: The Televisions. They should take them down ASAP. They are even partially covering up their renown old mural on the wall. It's a shame. WTF do they want TVs in there for anyway?"

"We were staying at the hotel, so ate at the Whaling Bar on our last night. The room is intimate, think an older style bar with cozy booths. We loved the atmosphere, but it got a little loud. Which, in such a small area, was enhanced. Decent wine/beer list with some good local selections. My wife started with the scallops in a cauliflower and mushroom sauce. VERY good. The mushrooms alone were worth devoting an entire dish. Tender and flavorful, perfectly cooked. Went well with seared scallops. I had the shrimp cocktail, which was good, but the sauce needed more horseradish. To eat, my wife had the petite (5 oz.) filet. This was fine, came with whipped potatoes and green beans. I had the Whaler, a burger that was good but huge."

"Everything was perfect. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Cocktails were just right. Wine list is curiously lacking the big names but for the well informed you find many bargains on it. Food was great. The old style ambiance is actually a refreshing change.
The night we were there it was not crowded at all, probably because it was resturant week and the Whaling Bar doesn't participate in that. Most times the place is crowded and noisy, do generally I would not recommend it as a romantic spot."

"Stumbled on this restaurant when looking for someplace in La Jolla Village area. It is a great find. Casual yet the food is excellent. Fish was fresh...preparations very good. Highly recommend."
