Nothing can ever match it's history or charm...now it's gone, but if only for a while. In it's reincarnation, we'll see if it carries anything forward of it's former glow.

Dined here with my husband the week before it closed just to be able to say we did. Very sorry to see the place go. Really does make you feel like you are a part of history. Had a memorable meal. We will go back again to eat in the regular restaurant.

I love everything about the Whaling Bar except for one thing: The Televisions. They should take them down ASAP. They are even partially covering up their renown old mural on the wall. It's a shame. WTF do they want TVs in there for anyway?

We were staying at the hotel, so ate at the Whaling Bar on our last night. The room is intimate, think an older style bar with cozy booths. We loved the atmosphere, but it got a little loud. Which, in such a small area, was enhanced. Decent wine/beer list with some good local selections. My wife started with the scallops in a cauliflower and mushroom sauce. VERY good. The mushrooms alone were worth devoting an entire dish. Tender and flavorful, perfectly cooked. Went well with seared scallops. I had the shrimp cocktail, which was good, but the sauce needed more horseradish. To eat, my wife had the petite (5 oz.) filet. This was fine, came with whipped potatoes and green beans. I had the Whaler, a burger that was good but huge.

Everything was perfect. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Cocktails were just right. Wine list is curiously lacking the big names but for the well informed you find many bargains on it. Food was great. The old style ambiance is actually a refreshing change. The night we were there it was not crowded at all, probably because it was resturant week and the Whaling Bar doesn't participate in that. Most times the place is crowded and noisy, do generally I would not recommend it as a romantic spot.

Living in San Diego it's not often that we get the chance to bundle up and feel Christmas-y so we started a tradition of reserving a table at the Whaling Bar & Grill when the temperature drops to kick-start our holiday spirit. After enjoying yet another evening of feeling completely pampered by the attentive staff and savoring our delicious dinner we wondered why we save it for the holidays. This warm cozy spot is such a well kept secret except to residents of La Jolla. Can't wait to keep our New Year's resolution and go back often. We love to walk around the village pre or post dinner and feel like we did in 1974 on our first date across the street at Botsford's which now houses the Morgan Stanley offices!

The noise level was excessive when we arrived, but decided it was bacause we were having an early dinner, and the cocktail group had not left yet. As they left, the atmosphere improved. We were a little disappointed at the dilatory service (our waiter seated us and left us menu's, took our drink orders, but then disappeared for about 15 minutes. When he returned he explained he wanted to give us time to relax with our drinks before bothering us with ordering, which sounded reasonable. The dinner itself was served in good order and time, and was excellent - innovative, delectable, and of correct portion size. Altogether, we had a delighful evening, and would return again. Our reason for dining there was to hear Mario Olivares later.

The outside tables overlooking the Pacific are the best seats almost anywhere in the area. Service is good and the food is average. The alleged fresh halibut from Alaska was overcooked and maybe it was just old. If you want the best halibut (macdamia nut crusted) in the area go to The Fishery on Cass. It even has live prawns and wholesales to most of the high end restaurants in the area. Everything is great there. The Whaling Bar attracts many tourists and some Hollywood stars. It is fun for brunch on Sunday if you want great amounts of high end seafood and a chocolate fountain to end your meal and possibly your life.

The food and the place was excellent, but I guess we didn't received the service we were expecting.First our waiter is so clumsy dropping the glass of water on the floor next to me,then we were not served with our bread right away, while the couple in the next table that just got in have theirs already, and the worst part is the waiter is trying to take our salad plate from us while we're still working on it and is trying to give us the main dish.I even hinted I'm still working on it and he ask me,"do you want me to put these back?" of course I yes! I just pretended to act as polite and sweet as I can not to ruin a romantic dinner.

We dined on "Prime Rib Special" night at 7:00 p.m. and they had no medium rare cuts! They offered to cook a new rib that would take "quite a while" but then produced a "medium rare" cut that was anything but. Waiter poured an entire bottle of red wine to four people at opening, barely able to confine it all to the glasses. Too bad, as we have had excellent meals there before and their "made at the table" Caesar salad is excellent. Expensive for all of the mistakes.
