A word from The Waverly Inn
Established in 1920, The Waverly Inn was reopened in 2006 by Vanity Fair Editor-in-Chief Graydon Carter along with Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode (of the Maritime and Bowery Hotels) and Emil Varda. Tucked into the ground floors of two adjoining townhouses, the dining room's red booths, fireplaces and low amber lighting provide an attractive and cozy hangout for the city’s best and brightest. Chef Ashley Merriman’s menu features American classics alongside contemporary seasonal dishes using organic, local ingredients. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "New York Strip, Dover Sole, and Creamed Spinach were all outstanding and well worth the price. Perfect, non-intrusive service in a lovely setting."

  • "The Waverly Inn has a clubby feel, but comfortable and charming, both in the interior and in the garden area. The service is efficient, but it can feel a bit rushed as things come out pretty quickly - not much lingering here. The food itself was fine, but not particularly memorable."

  • "Service was great. Did not like we were there right on time and we had to wait at the bar. They did not start to seat us until much later."

  • "Unfortunately I have to give a poor review. I have been to the Waverly Inn several times and my last visit there was not very good. We had to send 3 out of 4 entrees back. Maybe they got a new chef? They were all too heavily salted and the chicken pot pie had a smokey unpleasant flavor. The manager and our waiter were both very nice. We were not charged for our entrees and were given desserts on the house. However, I am not sure I will go back to the Waverly Inn."

  • "The place is chic, warm and the staff very attentive. Each time we drank water, there was someone to fill up our glass again... The food was really good but the service was too quick for an upscale restaurant. For example, we our main courses were on the table before we had time to finish our cocktails. After one hour, we had gone through cocktails, appetizers, main course and wine! If they slowed down the service a bit, this place would have been perfect. Ask for a table near the fireplace in the room in the back when you make your reservation."

  • "Beautiful intimate restaurant but once you subtract the Dover sole which went for $60, there was only one fish dish that didn't have meat in it. And that was mediocre because so many beans overwhelming it. Also server was clearly anxious to turnthe table and despite the fact it was a birthday dinner , servings came too quickly and he came too often hivering to clear and saybtoobudten "anything else@?"

  • "Dinner might be a better option. Not very impressed with brunch."

  • "This place ia truly romantic and adorable...an oasis ...the bartender , hostess and waitstaff were attentive yet not intrusive and did a great job. The atmosphere is perfect and we had a great table...and for me? that's enough. But...for the size of the check the food is lackluster....it's fine, but it is not commesurate with the space or the hype of the restaurant. I wasn't disappointed per se, but I really think they could do so much better."

  • "Beautiful restaurant with a vibrant atmosphere and friendly and efficient service! Multiple fireplaces keep the place as warm and inviting as ever. Mac & Cheese with truffle is a must and you should ask for the weekly price for the dish. My wife was in love with the decoration and plants inside."

  • "We had been interested in trying this restaurant for awhile. We finally made it there and we were disappointed. When in New York, we expect higher prices, but the prices here were ridiculous. Way too expensive. The service was fine but the help seemed to hover at all times, from the busboy to the waiter to the sommelier. Too much hovering. The quality of the food was fine but not out of the ordinary. I would not go back and would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "Wonderful place - extremely friendly bartender, excellent wait staff, delicious food, fire going in the fireplace. We loved it."

  • "We used to go here the amazing dutch pancake and were disappointed that it's no longer on the menu. We ordered the blueberry pancakes and eggwhite sandwich instead. Pancakes were undercooked, tasted strongly of baking soda, and had 4 blueberries (which was fine because the berries tasted off to begin with). The eggwhite sandwich was under-seasoned or just not seasoned at all. The "whipped avocado" was browned, mashed avocado crushed into incredibly soggy, bland toast. The side salad with the sandwich was slimy. The service was rude and sloppy. (When someone asks for soy milk but all you have is dairy, you should check w/ them before serving them a nondescript white liquid.) Overall, this was bad diner food at 10x the price."

  • "It was cold, supposed to snow like crazy, we'd been out all day. I can't imagine a more inviting place to spend an early supper Sunday night. The food was delicious, The pea soup spot on, and even the kale salad was as expected. Their turn on the standards are amusing to read on the menu, but more so to eat. There is an extensive wine list and an eager sommelier. No one offered coffee, but it's just as well I was drowsy from the wine and warmth and ready to sleep sated."

  • "Were 90% fulfilled. Lots of guests, still good service. Well crafted food, with some creative detailing from the kitchen. Nice fireplace."

  • "I love this restaurant for its charming interiors, exquisite ambiance with cosy fireplace. It is so inviting. It has the sofisticated old world charm. Servise is great. Waiters and waitresses complete the restaurant's first class image with their wanderful service and humor. The only disappointment is the food. It is mediocre... it does not meet the expectations set by the restaurant's character."

  • "seriously, so delicious....waiters and sommelier were fantastic. Very helpful without being robotic...a lot of personality but adding to the experience. Beautifully lit and decorated and so relaxing. Was celebrating with my friends and everyone loved it. Only problem is food is so delicious, large portions and rich, if I ate there too often I could definitely get fat....otherwise...heaven...All the other food was great from appetizers, mains and desert...but those biscuits...especially if you are baked you are in for a treat. After eating one I said that if it were the last thing I ate on earth I would die a happy girl.xox thank you"

  • "We took friends from out of town to the Waverly because we have had previously good experiences. But, this time was not so good and, therefore, embarrassing. We were so shoehorned into a tiny space with the next table so close that their shoulders and conversations made our experience unpleasant. But, I can tell you where he goes hunting.... The food isn't good enough to take the chance of having this experience again. We left without desert or coffee because of the crowding and general unpleasantness. Putting as many patrons in as possible might seem to be profitable but on this night it cost them money and will cost them more in the future."

  • "I liked the garden room, which has a pleasant, light and romantic feel to it. We had early reservations and found the service at this time to be very good. I would give kudos to our waiter and to the bus boys. About the food, I can say we were disappointed that it was only o.k. and not commensurate with the ambiance and service."

  • "Enjoyed dinner at ten with four friends and we all agreed it was the most beautiful of all the restaurants on our moms' weekend in NYC. Food was far better than I was led to expect. Still not up to the level of a Batali restaurant but totally fine."

  • "Don't you love it when you go a restaurant where the waiters try so hard to be more sophisticated than their patrons. I am in the luxury service industry and firmly believe that humility, charm and respect go a long way. Snooty service is very off putting. The food on the other hand is as good as ever. It is not a complaint but I hope management encourage their team to be a lot nicer because they are letting the side down."

  • "Good food and atmosphere. Wonderful fireplaces. But, SO dark one cannot read the menu. I got up from my table (it was 6:30) and walked around the entire restaurant to find a place with enough light to read the menu. There was only one spot --- it had two wall lamps. When we mentioned the difficulty the waiter suggested we take out our cell phones. EVEN the light from the cellphones was not enough. Halfway through our meal other patrons were seated behind us. Suddenly, a light switch was thrown and it was brighter. After they read their menus the switch was turned off again. Why for one group and not the other? We had communicated with the waiters. Chicken pot pie is delicious but over salted. Our European guest enjoyed the steak."

  • "Loved my experience. We sat for brunch in the "garden" area in the back of the restaurant. Beautiful light and plants. Food was delicious. I got the Duck Confit Hash, which was seriously amazing. What a gem!"

  • "It is unfortunate, because this is a very warm and inviting room. The food is okay, but the staff needs to be retrained. Remember the 90s when the front door had too much attitude. That is exactly what you will find here. The waiters are efficient, but they seem to think that they are doing you a favor. We were all very well dressed, and a good friend of mine (who is starring in his 18th broadway show) was with us. And we were still treated as though we were inconveniencing the staff. I won't go back. There are tons of great restaurants in New York where they are welcoming and gracious. Spend your money elsewhere."

  • "The waiter was consistently condescending and generally unpleasant."

  • "Despite the food was good, the ambiance was smart and the restaurant was beautiful, we were totally disappointed. We have called this restaurant the "No restaurant" because all we asked for had a No for an answer. A picture of us, a car service, a taxi...Once we paid and asked for the possibility of providing a car service (something we have asked for in restaurants such as Le Cirque or Per Sé in other trips to New York) the attitude of our waiter changed and spoke to us as we had never ever been in a top quality restaurant...the answer, and I quote, was "We don't do it for Jack Nickolson, so we will not do it for you"...We were totally stunned. This is neither the answer nor the attitude of a top quality restaurant waiter."

  • "Waverly Inn is one of our favorite restaurants in NY. Occasionally we have felt rushed to order the food and get out and we got a little bit of attitude. Especially if you order the smaller portions and cheaper items on the menu simply because we did not want to eat much. Also the waiters, as a team, constantly fill up your glasses with every sip you take if you order a bottle. We felt compelled to get out."

  • "In addition to multiple celebrity sightings in one evening, the ambiance was wonderful at the Waverly Inn. Dimly lit with fireplaces and candles galore, there are plenty of nooks to have an intimate dining experience in this quaint west village townhouse basement. It is a great experience that your date will be sure to thank you for. The food was very good as well. The Grilled Octopus small plate was absolutely amazing. Would go back again in a heartbeat!"

  • "I enjoy the bar, the ambience and the decoration very much. The service is not exceptional and the food is good without being amazing."

  • "My absolute favorite love letter from New York. Not to be missed. One of the few restaurants that if all you can get is the 6:00 reservation, it's ok...go. The ambiance and experience translates for an early dinner or a late night rendezvous. You feel like you're in old New York and the best part is the food matches the ambiance. There are no trade-offs at The Waverly Inn."

  • "All the food was just great. Service was quick and friendly. Only disappointed that they ran out of their signature chicken pot pie when we dine there. Could be because we had a 10:00 reservation on a Sunday night though."

  • "They redeemed themselves by comping the drinks that took a half hour to arrive, and offering us free dessert and champagne. But that they had to do all that should tell you all you need to know about how bad the service was."

  • "We ordered egg benedict that cost probably $21.00. The taste wasn't good at all. I didn't want to pay $21 for this poor taste food. I wouldn't recommend if you are looking for delicious food. The service was fantastic and all the waiters are so attentive. The ambience is good but it's not that special and tuere should be many restaurants that offer better atmosphere. I wouldn't recommend."

  • "this place used to be a celebrity hangout, now it's just an overpriced restaurant in an incredibly cool environment. the old british style inn thing works for them across the board. but then we had the slightly disinterested cool-kid waiter who couldn't really articulate much about the food, the sommelier who "didn't believe" in whole categories of wine, and then food that just straight up underwhelmed. it's pricey, which is fine if it's worth it, but in this case, it just didn't do much for any of us. great meal for the ambiance and people i happened to spend it with, otherwise not worth it at all."

  • "Really good food and cosy place, but it seems like the restaurant is a bit full of itself and so are the waiters. From the start you get the feeling that you are on the clock, it is quite apparent that they wish to seat additional guests after you. You are also studied for what you order and you get the feeling that to get good service you should order the more expensive wines and dishes on the meny. Not very charming. We felt they were almost nagging us to try their famous mac&cheese (which we didn't feel like). It should be said that the food we had was really good, and we can strongly recommend the scallops if you go there. However, there are so many nicer New York restuarants to experiece than this one."

  • "For an outdoor-like experience on a cold or rainy day, the back Garden Room at The Waverly Inn is a perfect brunch choice. Our food was excellent, and even though it took our waiter 10 min. to realize we existed, he was kind enough to comp a round of drinks for the delay. We will definitely go back. Thankfully we are neighbors, living just around the corner."
