Diner Reviews
  • "We've dined here on many occasions and have always had a wonderful experience."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "Our food and service were both great. We were out for dinner before an event and everything came out quickly so we had time to kill before we left. Would definitely recommend. For the portions and type of food the prices are reasonable."

  • "Two former co-workers shared my desire for some good seafood without paying an exorbitant price. We arrived a little early for our 6 pm reservation on Friday, and were seated immediately. The majority of the after work crowd was gathered on the patio on this first balmy weekend evening, but we preferred the more temperate calm setting indoors. We were all very pleased with our appetizers of mussels and the warm bread we dipped in the curry broth. Each entree was perfect. I loved my fried oysters and sautéed spinach, and my friends raved about their shrimp and grits and seared scallop entrees. The portions were enough to satisfy and priced moderately. Great service! This was a first visit for two of us, and we all agreed to return soon!"

  • "Attractive menu, yes. Tasty food, yes. The service was pleasant but spotty at best. For starters, the hostess sat us downstairs and our clients upstairs! Thankfully (after 15 mins of waiting on each other) someone had the wherewithal to do a full sweep of the restaurant or we might not have ever connected! The waiter rarely returned to check on us during our stay and completely forgot to bring us our dessert. Had to flag down someone else for help. Would not choose this restaurant if I was trying to impress anyone or in any kind of a hurry...why take the chance?"

  • "Fantastic food and great ambience. Staff was friendly and helpful, and the food came out very quickly."

  • "we went there on a saturday night and found it to be a very nice spot - we had the fried geen tomatoes that were excellent - the beer choices are really good, service was excellent, our reservations were at 8.00 - they had run out of a couple of the specials, which I oddly like as it means that they are bringing in fresh food - we split the scallops as we were not overly hungry and they were cooked awesome - usually places overcook them, this place asctually cooked them to a very nice medium well - which was perfect. Overall really good experince and will repeat"

  • "Not a cutting edge foodie place but good and varied menu. Friendly service and we have been there multiple times and have not had any negative experiences."

  • "We made our first trip to Water Coastal Kitchen and had a great experience. Our waiter was very attentive, even though he had 6 tables going at once. There were food runners which helped, but we never felt rushed, and there was a lot of teamwork going on, which wasn't distracting. The food was very good, especially the potstickers as an appetizer. My wife and I both had a fish entree, which is hard to prepare at home, and were very pleased. The wine list was short, but adequate. We will definitely come back!"

  • "First, communication from open table to restaurant failed. Restaurant didn't have my reservation. They were able to fit us in, but it was a bar table - high top, small. Right next to upstairs bar. My girlfriends food was good, but I ordered the pepper encrusted steak with crab meat, medium well. I received medium rare, non peppered encrusted steak. I didn't say anything because it was our anniversary, and didn't want to ruin it."

  • "I met clients to discuss business and have dinner. We were seated at a great table with a view, the server was eager to serve us and we had an outstanding meal. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "we always enjoy eating at Water Costal Kitchen - our meals are always good."

  • "The food was superb! We ordered the buffalo oysters as appetizer. They were perfect, a bit of hot offset by the blue cheese to tame it down. Next we had the pan seared scallops and rockfish special. Both were absolutely delicious! I recommend sitting anywere except upstairs in the back room.. The sound of everyone kind of echos, especially if there is a large party! Otherwise enjoy!"

  • "Expected alot from this restaurant-food was terrific with large selection and great seafood choices. Wine list by the glass was pretty limited and service was fair. With so many great restaurants in Richmond-perhaps another in this restuarant group would be a better option."

  • "We really enjoy this restaurant. The food and service are excellent. I had the grilled tuna . The desserts are wonderful!"

  • "We had a great birthday lunch at the Kitchen. The seafood was spot on. The only negative was the filet mignon had a butter sauce that the diner did not like. Service was great. We were there on a snowy day and had the "porch" with its gas fireplace to ourselves. Very nice."

  • "Very cute restaurant, first time I had been there but they've been here for years and just changed their name last year from The Water Grill. Their shrimp and grits were excellent; shrimp and grits is a dish that's difference everywhere you get it and theirs was a fresh take on it with asparagus, tomatoes, and mushrooms. Lobster tail was wonderful as well. Our server was very nice and helpful and the house wines were top notch. Will definitely go back."

  • "This wasn't my first time at Water Coastal Kitchen and certainly will not be my last. The food was absolutely phenomenal. While the prices are a little steep it's a great place to go for a special occasion. My only complaint is the noise level. We were at a booth upstairs and it was near impossible to hear each other across the table without shouting. Even when speaking to the person next to me I had to get right next to his ear for him to hear me. Outside of that one complaint, I love this restaurant."

  • "Delicious every time! This is the best brunch in Richmond."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "We have eaten here many time, but brunch yesterday left a little to be desired. The coffee was cold and we had to ask repeatedly for our cups to be refreshed. The table next to us was incredibly loud and obnoxious. I know its tough for a restaurant to control this, but it made for a mediocre experience."

  • "We had an excellent meal at Water Coastal Kitchen. If only they had a wine list that matched the calibre of the food and service! Our first 2 choices had 'been discontinued that week. The wines on the list are just not that interesting, and there is so much good wine to chose from in the price range that they have."

  • "We love dining here but felt it missed the mark recently. Portion sizes were not served with equanimity and the presentations were not executed with the precision and care to detail that in the past, have made for a lovely dining experience. The risotto and scallops are a savory recommendation but their redemptive savoriness paled in the face of disproportionate servings between guests at our table. Unfortunately this also happened with the usually comforting blueberry bread pudding, Skip the Rockfish unless you have a small appetite and we noticed that the Arugula salad was more substantial in the summer, so ditto for the salad. Not the best experience, but we will return and hope to enjoy a pleasant dining experience once again."

  • "Very enjoyable place to meet up for a girls lunch."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "The menu felt a little like a red lobster with only 4 choices for grilled fish. The watress could not answer basic questions about the source of the fish and if if was wild or farm raised The good was not horrible just average."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "The place was fun. Lot's of energy and good service. The mussels were amazing and so was the wine list. I would certainly come again."

  • "Our waitress was the BEST very attentive but not over powering, new the menu very well & suggested our great choices for wine & our meals. For our starters we had buffalo oysters & fried green tomatoes both were to our satisfaction fore our meal we had very meaty crab cakes with mashed potatoes & aparagus, & my husband had Thai lobster & shrimp linguine both dishes were excellent & cooked to perfection. We highly recommend this place to all that are looking for good atmosphere & good food by the way Tuesday was Lobster night!!!"

  • "The raw oysters were fantastic, but the main course, fish for both my husband and I was just OK. Seared tuna was overcooked and the presentation just didn't do it for me. Do not feel the need to rush back, although the appetizer menu looked great! Nice spot in Carytown."

  • "Took my wife here for a surprise birthday dinner. One of the most amazing dimmers I have ever planned for her. The food and service rated better then any place I have taken her in the last 8 years. The only restaurant that come close to this level that I have been to is the world renowned Eagle's Nest in Indianapolis, IN. So this place deserves the same level of stars, 5, at one third of the cost and no waiting period to make reservations. I would recommend this to any one and everyone. I am happily planning another outing with my wife here again."

  • "We were just passing through Richmond but wanted to have a good meal after a few on the road. Luckily we found The Water Place. The food was delicious, tpour waiter was very helpful. All in all , lucky us."

  • "This was my second trip to Water Coastal Kitchen. We were there on a very cold and rainy day. We were seated in the small room up front right next to a warm fire place. Although we arrived 15 minutes early for lunch, the host was kind enough to seat us and stated we could order drinks but would have to wait for lunch. That was fine with us as we were still trying to shake off the winter chill. The food was fantastic. I ordered scallops over asiago risotto. It was wonderful. I usually hesitate to order scallops in a restaurant as they are often overcooked. These were perfect. Would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food was excellent and very reasonably priced (I thought). We were there on oyster night, and I had a dozen Chesapeake oysters on the half-shell for $8. Their "crispy oyster" dinner is not to be missed. You get more oysters than you can eat - and they're perfect."

  • "1.First we waited 20 minutes to get seated while we had a reservation 2. Second, at 7:20, there was no lobster, no scallops and no tuna left.... it is a seafood restaurant- I don't care if Valentine's day was 2 or 5 days ago... be ready or don't open! 3. We had (literally) to chase the waitress to order our food (we waited another 20 minutes), get our food (some of us did not get our drinks for another 15 minutes) and then the check! Overall, liked the atmosphere but the service was pretty horrific."

  • "Very Good food. The Best waiter. Looking forward to dining outdoors. A key was getting there before the prime time rush, but it was still a good experience."
