Diner Reviews
  • "Water Coastal has consistently good food, good service, and a nice, large outdoor patio. They also have really good happy hour specials (food and drink) at the bar."

  • "My sister and I went for dinner and it was amazing. The server and ambience were perfect. Thanks for a great time"

  • "Dined again, this time with another couple who had never been to this restaurant before. We ate outside on the deck and what a nice evening to be there. Each of us had a different seafood selection and all dishes were even better than what had been expected after reading the menu description. Might be the best seafood restaurant in Richmond, Virginia."

  • "We were seated at a romantic spot with natural lighting, as well as with a candle on the table. The service was absolutely fantastic, and the food delicious."

  • "I've been to water coastal kitchen many times now and the fresh fish is great! There's a little bit of everything on the menu, service is friendly, and the food is delicious. This trip however I was a little disappointed on the uncharacteristically tiny portions. All the fish filets and sides were slightly larger than bite size and, for the price and my past experiences, a bit disappointing."
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "I have been here three times and this time was the final straw - the serve was awful!! The waitress had a huge chip on her shoulder and acted like it was beneath her to work there, the food took forever, when it arrived it was cold! very very disappointing. Really was looking forward to a nice eveing out."

  • "My dish looked very pretty but it was very underseasoned. The rice didn't have any spices. I had to put salt and pepper on everything. It was also very overpriced. I got the salmon dish and normal price is around $12-15, not $20...I didn't like the butter for the bread - it was sweet. Otherwise, the atmosphere outside was very nice. But it was a gorgeous day, so maybe that's why."

  • "You know the meal will be good when you are ordering the special because you are excited about the vegetable! Two of the four us ordered the special of the night because it was accompanied by brussell sprouts cooked in bacon. It was delicious as was the swordfish. We all ordered seafood, and everything was delicious. It was reasonable priced for a restaurant that falls into the category of "fine dining." Next time I will request a table outside. This was my first time here and did not know they had outdoor seating."

  • "Appetizers were excellent. Entree was good, except the combo platter from raw bar menu: it was not raw,all cooked, not much flavor but salted water, crab legs were too dry,but corn was excellent. Next time I will order from general menu."

  • "I arrived and had asked for a quiet table and my wish was granted. I was seated upstairs in the first booth overlooking the downstairs lobby and water feature. The raw oysters were awesome - I ordered the sampler and got to enjoy all three varieties. The entrees were filling and prepared as described. The dinner was delightful and I would highly recommend this establishment."

  • "Overall, very good experience. We sat outside in the evening. Excellent drinks, some enjoyed the calamari and would recommend it. Lobster tail was perfect. NIce that they allow substitutions. Service was very good. Will be back soon."

  • "I found plenty of non-seafood options (I have seafood allergies) and the key lime pie was DELICIOUS. Outdoor patio was clean but flies were still present in annoying numbers."

  • "Love the food. Enjoyed sitting outside on the summer day. The service was very friendly."

  • "A small group for dinner the other evening: Coincidentally, most of us ordered a beef dish, though fish is good here. Consensus: All beef dishes were tender, flavorful and best of all, free of the heavily salted taste one finds at most chain restaurants. The sides weren't cooked to death! Desserts were good, but the usual fare. Very good service. Will look forward to visiting again!"

  • "We have dined here quite a few times and will again. The menu is varied and the food well prepared and presented. I indicated in my rating that it is good for groups. Unfortunately it seemed somewhat overwhelmed by a group on this visit and the bar and food response time was very slow. The server was apologetic but that didn't do anything to resolve the issue. I still recommend it since this has not been a problem in the past. I hope my next rating will be back to at least very good."

  • "We've dined at Water numerous times. The fried green tomatoes with house-made pimento cheese is always superb and my main reason for coming back. Too bad the rest of the menu isn't as consistently good. Portion sizes often seem small, especially for the price (son's filet was absurdly mignon). This time, my mahi-mahi was overdone and inedibly rubbery (and server failed to inquire, even though only one bite was missing when she cleared away my plate), but husband said his was fine. Kitchen got other son's order wrong, but server noticed and corrected. Good bar/beer selections. May come back, but likely just for drinks and FGT appetizer before dining elsewhere."

  • "The title says it all. The food is consistently good but on our last visit, the service was terrible. Either our server was covering the patio alone (on a beautiful evening) or she is just not very good. Everything from the amount of time it took to get a glass of water and drink order taken to entrees being served while we were still eating our appetizers will cause us to think twice before returning to Water Coastal Kitchen. She poured our wine into our wine glasses like she was pouring a beer--neck of bottle halfway into the wine glass and the glass tipped on its side. I was embarrassed for her. No matter how good the food is, if the service is bad, I have no desire to return."

  • "The service was personable and attentive without being intrusive. Just right! However, the quality of the food was spotty. The potstickers were overly sticky and tasteless. The meat inside - lobster and shrimp - tasted and looked like mystery meat. My husband's pasta with crab and veggies had very little crab - it was truly hidden treasure - while my oysters were outstanding! The bread was also perfection! We sat by the window which was noisy and swatted flies throughout our dinner. This restaurant has great potential, but needs work."

  • "Have dined at Water often, and this was the first time at one of their outdoor tables. Very pleasant weather that day, a thinning lunch crowd, and attentive service made for a nice experience. The jumbo lump crab cocktail was a disappointment, though. The crab meat was shredded and grayish, so it was more likely back fin or "special" rather than true jumbo lump crab meat, which would've been sweet, white, grape-sized pieces. The mango, chopped onion, and micro greens with which the crab meat was mixed complemented it well, but the dressing was memorable only because it tasted funny. This should and could easily be a fabulous dish. The kitchen should fix it properly."

  • "Prices good - especially the specials - noise level was Ok but did get louder after 8:00 p.m. - good menu selection - love the seafood - chairs hard on the back but benches do have cushions- wine lists very good and prices a little high on the bottles"

  • "We entertained another couple that was celebrating both a birthday and retirement. What a perfect decision we made! The seafood selections made by each dinner were the freshest and tastiest dishes we've had in quite sometime. And what made the experience that much better was the friendliness and efficiency of a very knowledgeable waitress. Put this restaurant at the top of your must try places."

  • "We wanted seafood, but we didn't want to go to the Bottom or beyond -- this was an awesome choice! I highly recommend the seared scallops and Chesapeake oysters!"

  • "We were in Richmond visiting colleges with our teenagers and decided we wanted seafood at 8:45pm and fortunately got a last minute reservation at this fabulous restaurant. We got 4 different entrees and oysters for appetizers and everything was excellent and very well priced. Would highly recommend this place."

  • "Apps were fantastic. 3 of 4 entrees were very good. One was overdone fish and the portion was small. Table for four was a bit cramped."

  • "Had a 9 year anniversary dinner there and it was a great time!"

  • "I've been to Water Coastal quite a few times and it never disappoints! Drink options are always plentiful, specials are always very interesting, and food is always delicious! This time I ordered the shrimp and scallop dish from the menu which I have not had in the past. It was very tasty and was glad that I picked that dish. We also indulged and ordered the brownie dessert which I had only planned to take a bite or two of but couldn't keep my spoon away from it. Our waiter was excellent and always showed up at the right times."

  • "Would never have paired the rose with the scallops but ar our server's suggestion i did and it was perfect. The fried oysters were the best we've had in a while and the raw oyster combo was a wonderful variety. We will be regulars."

  • "If you love seafood this is your spot! From a fantastic raw bar to the biggest lobster tails this place has everything under the sea!"

  • "Sunday brunch was the first time we had visited WCK. The food was good. The only complaint we had was the home fries were only warm when we were served."
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "I made reservations for a group of 10, and we were placed in a private dining room, which was perfect for us. I liked the openness of the room. The waiter was attentive, and the food and beveridges were wonderful. It was a great time. We will go again."

  • "We enjoyed a delicious July 4th meal at Water Coastal Kitchen. Our server was attentive and very helpful. The food was well prepared with interesting sauces - you can choose your grilled fish with different sauces and side dishes. We enjoyed fried oysters and salmon with a tropical fruit garnish. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a great meal. Save room for dessert - the crème brulee and brownie ala mode were well worth the calories!"

  • "We really enjoyed our lobster dish on Lobster Night! The temperature was perfect, the taste, everything complimented each other. The salad was delicious, they make their own salad dressing. Quaint in the heart of Carytown Richmond, VA. The attire is casual. Based upon the website it appears more of a coat & tie attire."

  • "Food was excellent. Drinks nicely made. Able to talk, not too noisy. Made reservation to be outside only to be told that they don't take outside reservations when we came."

  • "My husband and I were first time visitors to Richmond. We were delighted to find this restaurant in the Cary Town area. We split wonderful lobster and shrimp pot stickers. We both enjoyed great salads. I don't remember what my husband ordered, but the grilled scallops were delicious."
