A word from The Walnut Room - Chicago
The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. With Circassian wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show. And don't forget about the Wine Bar at the Walnut Room. Opened in November of 2007, the Wine Bar features a small plate menu as well as more than 20 wines by the glass. After all, in our store, we have been feeding the shopping tradition since 1905.
Enjoy a classic Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie, French onion soup, or choose from the more contemporary menu offerings created by some of the country's best known chefs as members of the Macy's Culinary Council.

WAS NICE AND QUIET AS THERE WERE NOT MANY PATRONS AT THE TIME WE WENT (5:15). THE COD WAS FABULOUS, NOT GREASY, GOOD CRUNCH, HOWEVER, THE FLANK STEAK I ORDERED COULD BE IMPROVED. THE VEGGIE WAS THREE GREEN ONIONS THAT HAD BEEN GRILLED. HOW ABOUT ASPARAGUS INSTEAD. WHO WANTS ONION BREATH? I ORDERED THE STEAK MEDIUM AND IT CAME EXTREMELY RARE. I SHOULD HAVE SENT IT BACK BUT AM ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT WHAT THEY MIGHT DO TO YOUR FOOD IF YOU DO THAT. THE FLAVOR WAS DELICIOUS BUT JUST WISH IT WAS COOKED MORE. OVERALL A NICE EVENING AND THE SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD

The walnut Room has been a favorite whenever we are in Chicago. This time the food was not up to par. My husband had the pot pie and it needed seasoning and it was topped with a huge "cracker type" topping. It didn't appear to be baked together in the oven. My Quiche, while flavorful, gave me gastrointestinal problems later in the afternoon. We would give it another chance and try different dishes because it is a beautiful room filled with history.

The misses and I went here for a bite to eat before catching the 830 train home. Got there 645 place looks like a ghost town. Was seated at a window and waited... We waited for 15 min with still no sign of a waiter so we bailed. Other guests too were upset. Apparently they had 1 waiter for the 10 tables occupied

This was my first visit to The Walnut Room at Macy's on State Street. My husband and I went in celebration of our wedding anniversary. Our reservation was for 11:30 a.m. We were promptly seated by the hostess and were soon greeted by our waitress. She was pleasant, personable, and professional. My husband and I each ordered The Walnut Room's famous Mrs. Hering's Chicken Pot Pie. We both thought it was very good. For dessert, I had the Frango Mint Chocolate Ice Cream Pie for dessert. Quite delicious! Will definitely come back again and try other menu items!

My wife and I have visited Chicago for our wedding anniversary twice over the lasy 7 years. Both times we had our anniversary dinner there. We also have eaten there several other times. My advice: set at a window table (the views are awesome) and get the special of the day. I always do and have loved it. My wife has gone off the menu and found it"ok". It's a beautiful historic restaurant, the wine is excellent, the prices are very reasonable. We highly recommend the Walnut Room

A little girl. It's a beautiful room inside what used to be Marshall Field's. I literally have zero expectations when I eat there as it's more nostalgic to me than anything. Food is good, Frango ice cream by is the best. Service is never consistent but more just ok.

The food was pretty good - pot pie was good. However when we had a side dish missing we could not get the attention of our waitress - who was the only one handling 10 tables - and running past us. I stood up and finally flagged down the hostess - she said she would get the dish. We gave up on it - our waitress came - asked if we wanted dessert and gave us the check - when 20 minutes later the side dish showed up - cold and as we were getting ready to leave. We saw two other tables having similar trouble - one got up and left when coffee never arrived - and the other having problems with food and service. Hire some more wait staff - please!

We'd had a lovely lunch here the day before. Eleanor was our charming, efficient waitress. Really enjoyed her! But, when we returned for dinner, our male waiter left much to be desired. He was polite and pleasant; however, he brought our entrees to the table when we were only about halfway through with our appetizers! Of course, he said he'd be back with them later. (We're sure they were headed straight for the dreaded heat lamp!) Then, when he did bring our main courses, he took our dirty forks off our appetizer plates and laid them down on the table for us to use again! (We couldn't get over that!) Needless to say, we did not linger for dessert! Very disappointing experience in this lovely, stately room.

I learned about the Walnut Room through the Tea Cup Novella series. Book 5, entitled A Christmas Peril, reveals a small bit of history regarding Marshall Fields, The Walnut Room, and Spode's Christmas China. After reading the book, I knew I had to take my mother who grew up with Marshall Fields (now Macy's) as a household name, but never dined at the Walnut Room. The whole experience was wonderful. The staff was so gracious in answering my mom's questions from the restaurant's food to it's history. The food was delicious, especially the famous chicken pot pie and the white chocolate bread pudding. Lunch at the Walnut Room will be one of our most memorable mother~daughter experiences ever!

The Walnut Room is always a go-to for Christmas but it was great on a Friday night. It was quiet, nearly everyone had a view of the street from the windows. The food was great -- I was surprised to find they altered (diminished) the menu but I went with the never-fail chicken pot pie. I hope a larger menu prevails for the Holiday season, but for a nice quiet dinner --- you must go to the Walnut Room! The service was excellent as well and the pretzel rolls are dynamite!

The Chicago Macy's Walnut Room maintains the tradition started by Marshall Fields. The food was excellent and we enjoyed seeing old favorites on the menu. Tradition is not always appreciated but my guests and I enjoyed eating in such a lovely place. It brought back many good memories from long ago. I was back in Chicago, along with other relatives, for a family event. Nine of us took the CAF architectural boat tour and followed it with lunch in the Walnut Room. Almost all the adults in the group had eaten there years ago as special treats when it was still Marshall Fields (before Macy's messed with it). The room itself remains a lovely, warm space. The menu contained both their traditional items (pot pie, meatloaf) and many more contemporary items. We had a variety of things from the meatloaf through salads and sandwiches. All were excellent. The tables are while table cloth and real dishes/cutlery and the waiter we had, with a very large group, was excellent. Fields ain't Fields, but the Walnut Room is still the Walnut Room.

Great food and service. Was going to see MoTown the Musical and they observed our tight schedule in serving us quickly. We were arriving in Chicago via Amtrak. Train was very late and I called to reschedule our lunch reservation for 8 people at 11:30AM. Got only voice mails and no return call. Turned out not to be an issue when we arrived at 12:45PM but a call would have been nice.

The Walnut Room is a great place to grab a meal when visiting Chicago. The restaurant is a throwback to the old days of shopping. The room remains grand and the food is good. For the atmosphere, price, quality, and experience you can't beat it. Our visit was in the summer so the restaurant was not nearly as crowded as I have been told it gets during the holidays. I would gladly go back again.

Have been going here for years -- the place had its ups and downs with Marshall Field's corporate changes, but Macy's has the room looking good and serving appealing food. We had an early dinner here recently before a play and were seated by a window looking out over State Street. We enjoyed good dinner salads and wine by the glass, and even though our server had numerous tables to cover, he made sure that we were out in time to make the show. If they would just bring back the "hermit cookies" that used to be offered in Field's bakery!

The Walnut Room was fine if you're out shopping and you want a bite to eat. The food was okay and the ambiance makes it seem nice. My friend made it sound like fine dining- which is why I was let down. I was expecting so much more since the restaurant uses Open Table for reservations! We went before a matinee show and had time to "dine". I don't have any negative comments about the food, it was fine, but it seemed more cafeteria food than "fine" dining food. The atmosphere will fool you with the waiters in tuxedos and the fancy surroundings, but make no mistake, it is a stop for bite when you are shopping and nothing more.

I had lunch at the Walnut Room (alone, traveling with husband who was unfortunately in a conference). The ambience is nice and the food was wonderful. One of the best meals I had this trip. Although I really wanted to try the famous chicken pot pie, the waiter suggested the quiche of the day and it was really good. The addition of the side salad made a nice filling meal. Being seated by the windows overlooking the street was a nice perk.
