A word from The Walnut Room - Chicago
The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. With Circassian wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show. And don't forget about the Wine Bar at the Walnut Room. Opened in November of 2007, the Wine Bar features a small plate menu as well as more than 20 wines by the glass. After all, in our store, we have been feeding the shopping tradition since 1905.
Enjoy a classic Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie, French onion soup, or choose from the more contemporary menu offerings created by some of the country's best known chefs as members of the Macy's Culinary Council.

I have been to the walnut room a few times in the past, but this visit was not the same. There wasn't the same vibe or specialness in the air. If you are an old Time fan of this place you will be disappointed.

The butternut squash and cider turkey were staples and very good. I wish they'd offer them year long. The prices are good and the changing of the lights on the Tree this year was a nice touch. I do miss the revolving scene under the Tree though. The Walnut Room staff is always very helpful and courteous.

We have dined at The Walnut Room for 40+ years and I must say that I feel having Macy's keep the tradition and keep the service level at Marshall Field's standards is appreciated. We don't often miss our holiday lunch at The Walnut Room and in recent years I've even dined there a few times each year rather than just once during the Christmas season. Always delightful and always very good service. Absolutely no complaints here.

The walnut room isn't the fancy production it was when I was a kid, nor is the food as good, but it's still a lovely place to visit during the holidays...The service was great, the food was good and basic and the prices were great for downtown. We had meatloaf with mashed potatoes and veggie and the chicken pot pie with 2 drinks for around 30.00. The Christmas tree was lit up, which is still impressive and there was a fairy princess dinner going on for the young girls which was super cute. The room is still impressive and a great traditional respite from shopping at Macy's.

Always nice to go with the family and see the BIG Tree! The tree is so tall and pretty turning different colors. So amazing to little ones looking all the way up the high ceiling at the top of the tree. And the Fairies who come around to each table so you can make a wish are so fun!

The walnut room was a pure treat during our recent visit to Chicago. The ambiance was outstanding as we loved the Christmas Tree and the Ice Fairy (Suzee Belles) who stopped by every table to grant wishes. The service was a bit slow (for it not being very busy) but the staff were very helpful and kind.

Visiting Cicero relatives frm Fl. Arrived early with reservation and was seated within few minutes. Front welcoming and friendly. Tree, Lighting, Ambience and Fairy Dust, OH MY! Chicken pot pie great flavor w/chunks of chicken, husband enjoyed hamburger and cheesecake servings are large, pricing surprisingly reasonable. Sticker shock is the parking garage $36.00, although easy access and Macys entrance across street. We will definately return.

Our fist trip to The Walnut Room and it won't be our last! View of the tree was fabulous! We enjoyed the special of the day ~ though a bit spicy. Our waiter was very soft spoken ~ definite drawback because we could barely understand or hear him. He was professional and prompt with service, however. Even at our age, mid-60s, we enjoyed the Winter Fairy ~ she was a wonderful surprise, so I am sure kids would enjoy the experience of a "wish & sprinkle of fairy dust". Overheard her with the kids at a table close by and they were so intrigued with her. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to The Walnut Room and said that we are starting a new tradition by visiting every year!

The Walnut Room is always a good choice for a group in the Loop; ditto if you are going to the theater. The dining room is so large they can have private events while still serving the general public. I especially like that it is fairly quiet. There's none of the blasting music that is so common in restaurants these days.

The Walnut Room was our choice for an elegant lunch to cap off a Girls' Getaway to Chicago. We chose well! Despite the ongoing Christmas decorating, the room was peaceful and relaxing, the food tasty, and the service acceptable. The Walnut Room held memories of childhood and college days for two of us. Dining at the Walnut Room was an exceptional experience fifty years ago. Perhaps it is not quite as exceptional today, but we would certainly recommend the experience, and would return if in Chicago again.

I enjoy going to the Walnut Room for the nostalgia more than anything. The history alone is enough to go and have a drink or a small bite to eat. We went on a Sunday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised how quiet it was and not too many people were there! It seemed like they were clearing the main dining room to get ready for the Christmas tree going in the center. We were greeted with a very friendly host and he seated us right away. Our waitress was very nice. My friend and I both had their famous Chicken Pot pie and it was delicious! Just the right amount of meat and veggies. We were in and out within 1 hour. Our bill was $47 for two chicken pot pies, one glass of wine and one cocktail drink.

The dining room on a Friday night was practically empty... could it be because the service is abysmally slow? The Field's Special still tasted good, however, Macy's has skimped on some of the items that go into it, yet still charging the same price. I can't help but think how corporate greed permeates at every level, including the old, formerly family-owned Marshall Field's Walnut Room.

I was surprised to find that the restaurant is on the 7th floor of the Macy's store. I had to wait several minutes for attention from a sales clerk to find out where it was located. The room is pleasant, the service was good, the wine was nice, and the prices were reasonable, but the food was just OK. The waiter highly recommended the chicken pot pie, their "signature dish." I'm a big fan of pot pies, but this one was forgettable. Maybe other dishes redeem the place.

THE VEGGIE WAS THREE GREEN ONIONS THAT HAD BEEN GRILLED. HOW ABOUT ASPARAGUS INSTEAD. WHO WANTS ONION BREATH? I ORDERED THE STEAK MEDIUM AND IT CAME EXTREMELY RARE. I SHOULD HAVE SENT IT BACK BUT AM ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT WHAT THEY MIGHT DO TO YOUR FOOD IF YOU DO THAT. THE FLAVOR WAS DELICIOUS BUT JUST WISH IT WAS COOKED MORE. The walnut Room has been a favorite whenever we are in Chicago. This time the food was not up to par. My husband had the pot pie and it needed seasoning and it was topped with a huge "cracker type" topping. It didn't appear to be baked together in the oven. My Quiche, while flavorful, gave me gastrointestinal problems later in the afternoon. We would give it another chance and try different dishes because it is a beautiful room filled with history.

This was my first visit to The Walnut Room at Macy's on State Street. My husband and I went in celebration of our wedding anniversary. Our reservation was for 11:30 a.m. We were promptly seated by the hostess and were soon greeted by our waitress. She was pleasant, personable, and professional. My husband and I each ordered The Walnut Room's famous Mrs. Hering's Chicken Pot Pie. We both thought it was very good. For dessert, I had the Frango Mint Chocolate Ice Cream Pie for dessert. Quite delicious! Will definitely come back again and try other menu items!

My wife and I have visited Chicago for our wedding anniversary twice over the lasy 7 years. Both times we had our anniversary dinner there. We also have eaten there several other times. My advice: set at a window table (the views are awesome) and get the special of the day. I always do and have loved it. My wife has gone off the menu and found it"ok". It's a beautiful historic restaurant, the wine is excellent, the prices are very reasonable. We highly recommend the Walnut Room

The food was pretty good - pot pie was good. However when we had a side dish missing we could not get the attention of our waitress - who was the only one handling 10 tables - and running past us. I stood up and finally flagged down the hostess - she said she would get the dish. We gave up on it - our waitress came - asked if we wanted dessert and gave us the check - when 20 minutes later the side dish showed up - cold and as we were getting ready to leave. We saw two other tables having similar trouble - one got up and left when coffee never arrived - and the other having problems with food and service. Hire some more wait staff - please!

We'd had a lovely lunch here the day before. Eleanor was our charming, efficient waitress. Really enjoyed her! But, when we returned for dinner, our male waiter left much to be desired. He was polite and pleasant; however, he brought our entrees to the table when we were only about halfway through with our appetizers! Of course, he said he'd be back with them later. (We're sure they were headed straight for the dreaded heat lamp!) Then, when he did bring our main courses, he took our dirty forks off our appetizer plates and laid them down on the table for us to use again! (We couldn't get over that!) Needless to say, we did not linger for dessert! Very disappointing experience in this lovely, stately room.

I learned about the Walnut Room through the Tea Cup Novella series. Book 5, entitled A Christmas Peril, reveals a small bit of history regarding Marshall Fields, The Walnut Room, and Spode's Christmas China. After reading the book, I knew I had to take my mother who grew up with Marshall Fields (now Macy's) as a household name, but never dined at the Walnut Room. The whole experience was wonderful. The staff was so gracious in answering my mom's questions from the restaurant's food to it's history. The food was delicious, especially the famous chicken pot pie and the white chocolate bread pudding. Lunch at the Walnut Room will be one of our most memorable mother~daughter experiences ever!
