Diner Reviews
  • "Food was good, service was very uneven. Our server forgot about us after initially stopping by. Never came by to take our drink order and we had to chase him down. Rest of the meal was uneventful."

  • "We came on a friends recommendation for our daughters birthday. She ordered the chicken dinner it was dry and tasteless. We had no salt and pepper on the table to add some flavor. We said she should send the dinner back but she did not want to. She said she herd what happens in kitchens when food is sent back. She said she would rather eat dry chicken. The service was quite slow other tables around us that came in much later already had been served. After we started eating we noticed other tables had dinner rolls. We asked our server why we didn't get rolls he said you only get them if you ask. We asked and got rolls. We drove 1-1/2 hours to get to the Upstairs Bistro we will not return to many other better places to eat in the area."

  • "Made last minute reservations for 4 people, asking for outdoor seating and getting it, despite not being guaranteed anything by the site. We did get a nice table, a gracious and observant waiter, and wonderful food! We stayed from 7:30 to closing, and the waiter never made us feel rushed. The only unfortunate item I should mention is that the outdoor seating did not give us a view of the lake, it is situated facing away from it, and you end up having a chance to monitor your car in the parking lot, or the grounds behind the restaurant. But I would absolutely go back again!"

  • " Always a great meal and great friendly service. We sometimes eat at the bar which is a great option if the tables are booked or you did not make a reservation."

  • "Wonderful upstairs view looking over Canadaigua Lake and a great meal."

  • "My friends and I wanted to try something different when we found this Bistro. We had a great time and the food was good. The whole complex is something to see from the gift shop to watching the students cook downstairs."

  • "Nice setting and good food. Sean was an excellent server!"

  • "The folks at the bar serve great drinks at speed for an amazingly low price. The 4th of July dinner was a BUFFET with NO notice on the website. NOT what we expected and the servers were indifferent to the inconvenience. We walked out and went across the street to McGregors."

  • "We took our relatives that were visiting from Alabama to the Upstairs Bistro on Sunday for dinner. We arrived at the restaurant and were quickly seated outside, our server was great at explaining all the dishes and answering questions that we had. The food was all delicious, the appetizers were enough to share, we all got something different so we were able to taste four different dishes. We shared the crème brulee - it was unbelievably good and once again enough to share. We left the restaurant full, and happy. We would certainly go there again."

  • "We went here for New Year's Eve and found the service to be poor with an overall lack of organization. We thought it might be due to the special occasion so we went back there this weekend. Unfortunately, it was the same experience. The food was good, but everything else was terrible. From the host repeatedly reporting "just 5-10 minutes" for nearly an hour, to the rickety table, to having to ask for bread, to not receiving the salads the way we ordered, and on and on. All little things, but they add up. To be fair, the manager did show concern and made an effort to appease us by comping one of the meals and giving us a gift card for a future visit. Not sure if we'll use it."

  • "This was my first time at the Upstairs Bistro. We went there in the late evening for some drinks on the deck. The atmosphere was great and people were friendly. The only complaint I have is that they are only open till 10 pm on the weekends. They should extend the hours. This survey assumes you have eaten here and forces you to rate it. Since I have not eaten here I gave it an average rating."

  • "Very slow start to our meal. Several minute wait before we saw our waiter and did not receive our cocktails until 15 minutes after we were seated. After this service was and meal pacing was good. The food was excellent."

  • "Love the NYWCC but their service has gone down hill. My last few visits they were both weekday evenings, not very busy, but the waitstaff was slow and not very attentive (took forever to get water, take our drink order or get bread) and the server we had knew nothing about ingredients or menu items when we asked questions, even not knowing the availability of hard ciders. For a wine and culinary center, i would expect better knowledge of the food and drinks available. However, our dinners were very good and the drinks were delicious - just mostly disappointed with the staff there. hopefully they can do a better job training their staff. the waitress was nice and friendly, just not very knowledgeable or attentive."

  • "I had dinner at the Upstairs Bistro before a concert at CMAC. Although we had plenty of time, I was impressed that there were menu options that guaranteed a quick turn around and also took advantage of a one of several drink specials that were offered for concert goers. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others looking for somewhere to eat before a show. The food and atmosphere were great and our experience made a wonderful start to the evening."

  • "We traveled for 45 mins. and wee pleasantly surprised by all that was going on at the center. The restaurant was exceptionally nice. Quietly located on the second floor. We were quietly celebrating a birthday. The food was excellent and the service was the same. "

  • "Used your service to book a reservation and was able to let you know that the event was for a wedding Anniversary. As soon as we were seated, we were offered champagne from the waiter. This was a classy gesture that started the night off in a perfect way. The outdoor scenery is breathtaking. Our waiter was very responsive and checked with us just enough to know that he was there. He knew the specials and made suggestions as to what wine to pair with our meal. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to family, friends and co-workers. "

  • "As I can't drink alcohol (doctor's orders) I can't comment on the wines. The food and presentation were quite nice. The sound system is first class, but vocal music doesn't make a good background for dining. Too bad there were so few other customers, as it made the atmosphere a little dismal. Keep up the good effort! Our waiter (Eddie?) was really fine."

  • "Overall, we had a good experience. It was a perfect night for eating outside on the deck. Due to a couple of large groups, we were told the kitchen ended up getting pretty far behind and delayed our food a bit longer than it should have. The fact that the food was very good mostly made up for the wait. Our server was a nice guy and was very responsive, but it was apparent that he was over-seated. "

  • "It was very satisfying, but the presence of a large group made the service slow for the rest of us, and the food was cold. However, the waiter compensated by offering us dessert on the house, which we appreciated."

  • "After being seated my boyfriend and I were forced to wait 35 minutes before out waiter came back. After he did come back he said he was sorry for the extra ten minutes, I could have tolerated ten but it was closer to 40. If their reputation for great food had not preceded them, I would have walked out. Beware of horrible service."

  • "The Upstairs Bistro just keeps getting better! The new menu is wonderful, food is outstanding, service continues to be excellent, and with summer around the corner this is a must-go for outdoor dining, overlooking Canandaigua Lake!!!"

  • "We ate on the outside balcony. It was breezy but the awnings made it nice. We had a very nice waiter and enjoyed the food. My husbands pilsner was very good but didn't seem like a pilsner with its amber color and very little hop flavor."

  • "I had high hopes for the restaurant in the culinary center, but they are not meeting expectations. Wine list is poor, limited in choices and reds are not the best NYS has to offer. Not one exceptional red wine in list and I know there is much better in the Finger Lakes alone. We sat for a long time before a waiter noticed us without water on our table and the restaurant was not full. Food is tasty but expensive for what you get and there are not enough small meal offerings. Atmosphere good and nice deck so hopefully they will make some improvements to get up to the standards expected of this location."

  • "I've been to the Upstairs Bistro twice and thoroughly enjoyed my food and beverages each time. The menu changes with the seasons and features locally available ingredients. The beer selection is constantly changing, as well. My recent dine was with my boyfriend for a "get out of town" weekend (we live in Rochester). We were able to make a reservation online two hours in advance and were seated promptly, despite being a few minutes early. Our server was knowledgeable and courteous. Our food was excellent! (I recommend the local artisan meat and cheese platter.) Our only, relatively minor, complaint was that the tables for two were very closely spaced. We were nearly eating with the couple next to us. Otherwise, a great evening!"

  • "A friend and I signed up for a wine class, so we decided to Try the Sunday Brunch first. The menu is weird. It Was Sunday brunch...yet the only brunch type options were French toast and eggs Benedict. No Omelettes no pancakes...no waffles. I ended up getting soup and salad For lack of any other interesting choices. The sweet potato soup was extremely rich and didn't come with Any bread or crackers to help cut the strength - I only ate half but my server never even asked if I liked it. Same with My salad. My friend ordered a hot roast beef sandwhich , which she said was good, but again she was hoping for a brunch offering. It's a shame - the setting is beautiful, but the food and service was definitely not worth the drive from Rochester."

  • "The ambiance and service were very good. However, the food was good but not great. This is a culinary institute so I was expecting a bit more creativity and special touches to the food. The menu choices were a bit pedestrian - Ceasar salad, burgers, pizza, steak - with a few more interesting items -winter vegetarian sampler, cheese and meat sampler, for example. The use and highlighting of NYS products is nice. Maybe it was just this current menu that didn't impress me as I've been here during the summer and enjoyed it more. I'll certainly be back."

  • "Great ambiance and dispite a small menu the food was terrific. The on-site chefs prepare a tasty and straightforward dishes that are well presented. The locally grown greens were outstanding, and were only out matched by the service. We will return over and over."

  • "The Upstairs Bistro, a feature at the New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua, New York, is a destination for excellent dining. Every item served us, from the Pinot Grigio as we awaited the meal, to the final cup of coffee with dessert, was expertly prepared and served. Natural light fills the restaurant, which is rich with wood paneling and a coffered ceiling, but yet scaled to human size and activity. The views of Canandaigua Lake and the subdued quiet of the space invite the guests to take ample time to savor the beautiful food and thoroughly enjoy the dining experience."

  • "What a great local asset! The dramatic view into the cooking class theatre upon entry was striking, I’ll definitely try a class one day, but we were there to eat upstairs… The food was fantastic, the staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable without appearing pompous. Great place in a great setting, couldn’t ask for more."
