Diner Reviews
  • "I've been to the Upstairs Bistro twice and thoroughly enjoyed my food and beverages each time. The menu changes with the seasons and features locally available ingredients. The beer selection is constantly changing, as well. My recent dine was with my boyfriend for a "get out of town" weekend (we live in Rochester). We were able to make a reservation online two hours in advance and were seated promptly, despite being a few minutes early. Our server was knowledgeable and courteous. Our food was excellent! (I recommend the local artisan meat and cheese platter.) Our only, relatively minor, complaint was that the tables for two were very closely spaced. We were nearly eating with the couple next to us. Otherwise, a great evening!"

  • "A friend and I signed up for a wine class, so we decided to Try the Sunday Brunch first. The menu is weird. It Was Sunday brunch...yet the only brunch type options were French toast and eggs Benedict. No Omelettes no pancakes...no waffles. I ended up getting soup and salad For lack of any other interesting choices. The sweet potato soup was extremely rich and didn't come with Any bread or crackers to help cut the strength - I only ate half but my server never even asked if I liked it. Same with My salad. My friend ordered a hot roast beef sandwhich , which she said was good, but again she was hoping for a brunch offering. It's a shame - the setting is beautiful, but the food and service was definitely not worth the drive from Rochester."

  • "The ambiance and service were very good. However, the food was good but not great. This is a culinary institute so I was expecting a bit more creativity and special touches to the food. The menu choices were a bit pedestrian - Ceasar salad, burgers, pizza, steak - with a few more interesting items -winter vegetarian sampler, cheese and meat sampler, for example. The use and highlighting of NYS products is nice. Maybe it was just this current menu that didn't impress me as I've been here during the summer and enjoyed it more. I'll certainly be back."

  • "The Upstairs Bistro, a feature at the New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua, New York, is a destination for excellent dining. Every item served us, from the Pinot Grigio as we awaited the meal, to the final cup of coffee with dessert, was expertly prepared and served. Natural light fills the restaurant, which is rich with wood paneling and a coffered ceiling, but yet scaled to human size and activity. The views of Canandaigua Lake and the subdued quiet of the space invite the guests to take ample time to savor the beautiful food and thoroughly enjoy the dining experience."

  • "Great ambiance and dispite a small menu the food was terrific. The on-site chefs prepare a tasty and straightforward dishes that are well presented. The locally grown greens were outstanding, and were only out matched by the service. We will return over and over."

  • "What a great local asset! The dramatic view into the cooking class theatre upon entry was striking, I’ll definitely try a class one day, but we were there to eat upstairs… The food was fantastic, the staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable without appearing pompous. Great place in a great setting, couldn’t ask for more."

  • "We went there for Valentines. Everything was special, the food was well prepared and generous, the wine list was excellent, the service was good. All around we would recommend the Wine and Culinary Center BIstro for any meal."

  • "Went to Upstairs Bistro for Valentines Day Dinner. It was a great choice. The service and food were excellent. It was full but not over packed. The staff was wonderful and made it a great experience. My wife and I will be back for sure"

  • "Overall, the ambience and service were once again the highlights of dining here. The waitstaff was attentive and personable and the atmosphere was romantic and warm, especially with snow falling outside the new, larger windows that allow the diner a lovely view of Candandaigua Lake. The food, however, was somewhat uninspired and seasoning is a troublesome feature, with the delicious butternut bisque oversalted and the salad dressing bland. The main course tenderloin was also underseasoned. We will return, ever hopeful that the food will impress us as much as the other aspects of the dining experience!"

  • "The service was top notch as we felt as though we were the only people in the place. The food was fantastic and we were given a great suggestion for a bottle of wine that paired with our food very well. We really enjoyed ourselves and can't wait to go back."

  • "Great restaurant: reasonable prices, great food, great service & try their daily specials. We had a table of six and enjoyed a variety of their menu items including apps & deserts. Just a good dining experience."

  • "Food was awesome from the appetizer to the dessert. All the sauces and side dishes were well prepared and first rate. Started out with scallps and brussel sprouts, then tenderloin, then chocolate nest for dessert. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "This was our first time there and it was a great experience. The food was full of flavors, cooked to our tastes and the service was terrific. The waitress was very accomodating to any special wants and was very knowledgeable about the foods and wine parings as well as the restaurant as well. As far as out door dining that would of course be in the summer only."

  • "Took employees to Upstairs Bistro for a holiday luncheon. Bread on sandwiches (foccacia) was stale and crumbled immediately into a pile of crumbs which all landed in our salads making them inedible. We ate the interior of our sandwiches and more than halfway through our meal, our waiter gave us a more appropriate pretzel roll but most of our lunch was already done. Should have been a special meal but ended up apologizing to my staff."

  • "The food was great - perfectly sized portions. The complimentary glass of sparkling wine for New Years was a nice touch."

  • "Good food, service and ambiance. Only small negative was the noise level. They need some soft surfaces to break up the sound bouncing off the wood walls. Overall a really good experience ."

  • "Very enjoyable evening with friends. The steaks were done perfectly with tasty sides. Our sides were filled with very fresh greens and delicious dressing. It was a busy night so the time for the meal to arrive was a bit delayed, but our server was polite, accommodating and conversational with out being overly so. Our group has already decided that we would make the trip back to the Bistro in the future!"

  • "If you want the perfect place for great atmosphere, service and food, this is the place to go! Choices at the Sunday brunch were such that it was hard to make a decision. However, my choice of the specialty French toast proved to be correct. Drinks were perfectly mixed and the service beyond excellent. I had a hard to please 10 year old in tow and our server made the extra effort to insure the he too was pleased. Could not have asked for more."

  • "After spending days preparing the holiday dinner, it was WONDERFUL treating my daughter and her new husband to a great post-holiday lunch. The food was terrific, great service and love environment. My son-in-law LOVES craft beers, my daughter prefers cider, while we enjoy our wine. It's was great having an environment were we could each enjoy a great selection of all! Even the pasta special got a huge thumbs up from my VERY critical old school Italian critic ;)"

  • "if you are looking for a menu with a lot of choices this is not the place. The menu does change with the seasons which does make for some interesting choices. I would suggest checking the menu on line before hand if you have any 'picky' eaters although the burger and pizza items should satisfy anyone. The food is top notch and the quantity will leave you full. The service has been a little spotty on our 5 or 6 visits but still respectable. Great for summer dinners on the veranda overlooking the lake and the hills with the setting sun."

  • "Lackluster service, good food. We were there on a weeknight-- most of the tables were empty yet our waiter was never around. Ended up gong to the bar to get refills on drinks. No compaints on the appetizers. My cauliflower soup was very good, and the cheese bites were awesome! We bought the jazzy jam thenext day in town. His pizza was burned. My sea bass was perfectly cooked. Our dessert of macaroons and a mousse left much to be desired. Word of caution when dining outside-- the bugs are HORRIBLE! Do not sit under a light unless you're looking for some extra protein in your meal."

  • "I ordered the salmon and it was the best tasing salmon dish I have ever had! My husband had the portiobello mushroom sandwich and he said it was good. He is trying to eat more vegetarian type foods so if he says it was good that is a high rating for a meat lover. The service was very good and the waiter was very attentive."

  • "This was our initial Friday lunch stop on a weekend visit to the Finger Lakes. The entrance is warm and lodge-like with impressive views of the first floor chef-training facilities. The upstairs dining area has remarkable views of the nearby lake and a wrap around deck for outdoor dining. The menu offered light lunch options and we enjoyed our cheese bites and ravioli selections. My Riesling was comfortably uncomplicated and well-chilled. Service was timely and our server was engaging and pleasant. Our experience was the perfect relaxing and satisfying lunch after a 4 hour drive. A visit to the ample gift shop and craft beer bar and sales area gave us a jump on holiday shopping."

  • "The noise level of a hard walled room made conversation between us over almost impossible. The waiter was very good and the food was also very good with one exception - the Onion Soup was over spiced. My wife could not eat it. She thought she detected red pepper in the broth. The waiter removed it and remarked later that he had tasted a sample and indeed it was on the spicy side. It was removed from our bill without question. At this time we would not return except to maybe dine on the outside deck. The noise inside from groups and general conversation put a damper on the evening for us. We did not go out to dinner to shout at each other. The room design is Pretty in appearance but poor for dining patrons."
