A word from The Twisted Tail
The Twisted Tail is a bi-level restaurant, bar and live music venue featuring a charcoal-fired grill, a wealth of bourbon selections and the rollicking ambiance of a "juke joint" (or old school Southern music hall). The inventive menu highlights ingredients in their simplest form, flame broiled over live coals for rich, authentic flavor.

Inside a warm, welcoming dining space makes The Twisted Tail South Street’s best place to catch a band - and a bite.

  • "Excellent experience at the Twisted Tail. All the food was excellent- 5 courses for less than $40. Bar owner very knowledgable about bourbons came to our table to make recommendations. Sat downstairs - noise level mostly attributable to live music, though not so overwhelming where I could not have conversation at a normal speaking level. A must try, especially for bourbon fans."

  • "Appears to be a bar, but is actually a fun, upscale menu, kitschy dining experience. A lovely surprise!"

  • "Great time again at the Twisted Tail! Food, drinks, service and the atmosphere make this the place you want to keep going back to."

  • "Great food, awesome cocktails (Tyme for Tyme was amazing), extensive whiskey list. Left full and happy. Bonus was the great music going on upstairs that we checked out before leaving!!"

  • "Our experience at the Twisted Tail was awesome from start to finish! Starting with the fabulous drink at the bar, made by Shazam! The most fabulous Manhattan I have had. The food and atmosphere were right on and the staff was very welcoming and friendly. Going to tell all my friends about this one! Can't wait to go again!"

  • "Great drinks, lots of good choices for both apps, sides and entrees. Service was friendly, although a little slow. Definitely want to go back to try more of their signature cocktails and unique entrees."

  • "We frequent Twisted Tail despite our living in NJ. We've been there 3 times this month already. The menu is interesting with a big nod to southern-style food, including crawfish, greens, fried chicken and shrimp. If one is not in the mood for grits or pork belly, however, T.T. offers a great selection of artisan cheeses & cured hams. In all cases, the food is fabulous and the wait staff is attentive. T.T. also has a huge selection of bourbons and infused liquors. I personally like a cocktail called thyme after thyme. Gin, fresh thyme, ginger liquor and lime juice shaken then served in a martini glass. Unfortunately, one's success in maneuvering a martini glass is inversely proportionate to the number of these drinks consumed!"

  • "We went to the Twisted Tail due to another close-by restaurant lacking parking. We were pleasantly suprised about the gourmet type of food served at this otherwise "bar-like" atmosphere. It was a little loud for a romantic dinner that we were looking for, but the food was a very different spin on chicken and pork. I recommend this one for anyone that is adventurous and loves good ol' swine. Live music on Saturday nights for folks looking for a late night outing with a great food option."

  • "I dined at Twisted Tail for Dinner then for Brunch a day and a half later and I was thoroughly impressed. Our server was outstanding and knew the definition of quality service. The food speaks for itself and the atmosphere is just lovely. I'd recommend this place to anyone I knew that loves (or has never had) good food with a New Orleans flair, I'd also probably invite myself along."

  • "This was our third trip to the Twisted Tale and we brought two other couples who had not been before. Although all were pleased with dinners ( most ordered one of the Mardi Gras specials) the crawfish macaroni and cheese was disappointing on this evening - this was particularly disappointing as we had been raving about this dish and encouraged others to order. The crawfish was lacking and it was not creamy. In the past it was served in a small bowl and this time it was in a small cast iron pan. The $17 bourbon special tasted harsh rather than smooth. Good wine selection and other cocktails."

  • "They call it "southern food" but it has an upscale flare, along with an upscale price. The portions are small so appetizers are required. I like the ambiance but iI have never experienced a noisier restaurant. Conversation was only feasible with the person next to me, not the person across the table. The popcorn they serve (instead of bread) is absolutely delicious. You can taste the rosemary in the butter. Our server, Anthony, was THE BEST."

  • "Went here for Valentines Day. Right from the door we were treated with great service. We were seated promptly and attended to every step of the evening. There was a special Valentines Day menu consisting of 4 courses. Every course was delicious! My especially love the Cheesecake dessert. i think it was one of the best that i have ever tasted. I would definitely recommend this place and will surely be returning again to try the regular menu."

  • "I went with two friends here on Valentine's Day. The food was spectacular. It was a four-course prix fixe menu. The peking duck was incredibly tender and flavorful. I could have had a whole bowl of the potato leek soup. There were even plenty of extras that we didn't expect, including rosemary popcorn, chocolate covered strawberries, a frangelico baileys shot in a chocolate cup, and a creme brulee to take home! The drinks were also wonderful. The apple pie moonshine didn't taste like alcohol at all - a dangerous drink. The Lynchburg lemonade had a great whiskey taste to it. We also tried the "one bourbon, one scotch, one beer" flight. Too cute. There's no way I won't be coming back to the Twisted Tail."

  • "As is typical for most restaurants and our 7:30 Saturday night reservation, service becomes less ideal at peak times resulting in longer-than-ideal waits for menus, water, drink and food orders. Having been a waiter, I understand that many factors outside the control of the wait staff contribute to less than ideal service. But as a consumer, I wish establishments would add staff, both in the kitchen and in the dining area, during peak times so service remains excellent."

  • "Meal was fantastic - been about 3 years since I've ordered a medium-rare steak and not had send it back for being overcooked. The Chef could teach Ramsay a thing or two. Waiter had a great personality and even nailed best IPA for my dinner. Already making plans for friends in-state and out to hit them up again. Place was fantastic regarding atmosphere.....good music; young energetic crowd; more than ample bourbon selection......seriously, why are you still reading my review? Make a reservation and get over there, now!"

  • "Wasn't sure what to expect for restaurant week. Staff was friendly and helpful. Food was good. They do a 4 course/$35 every day from their regular menu. Meal started with rosemary and bacon fat popcorn for the table. Charcoal grill: sausage (which was huge), portabello, and pork belly. All good but the meat was best. Appetizer: crawfish mac&cheese and crawfish bisque. Mac and cheese was awesome and a perfect size. Entree: Shortrib w/egg and barley was divine. Salmon and crab cakes were good. Dessert: Beignets were a perfect bite, pudding was fine with nice bruleed brittle. Best was the blood orange panna cotta. Perfect, light. Beer and bourbon lists were also good. Overall it was better than I had expected and the food was really enjoyable."

  • "We visited Twisted Tail for the first time last night. Our server was very attentive and informative. As one of us is gluten free, we don't always have an easy time of picking a restaurant. We were both pleasantly surprised. There are plenty of great choices for GF diets, as well as beer! We will definitely be back."

  • "Atmosphere was very appropriate for the holiday. The Winter root Salad was superb and the sea bass phenomenal! We didn't like that the gratuity was added on without our knowledge. this is something that should be noted before hand. All in all...good experience."

  • "My wife and I are repeat customers, although we may not be back for a while. We like the place, we do, but it has draw backs. First off we were seated by a very unfriendly hostess who tried to cram us into a small table between another couple and the bar. I asked for another table and she looked at me like I asked for her pay. I got another table though. Our waiter was great. He knew his stuff really well and was friendly and engaging. The drink list is extensive. The menu is nice and the food is well prepared. But...it is over priced and it came out way too fast for our liking. The bar is right in the middle of the restaurant and talking is a challenge. not to mention that live music is played which is nice but loud."

  • "Not a large menu, but eclectic and plenty to choose from. We especially enjoyed the veal bacon with pickeled onions. Lovely southen smoke flavor- mindful of virginia smoke houses. Mussels in broth were plump and sweet. We could have made a meal on the appetizers. The entrees were moderately priced, which was a nice surprise. Fun, inventive drink menu and nice touches such as rosemary-bacon popcorn placed on each candlelit wooden table. Appealing atmosphere, especially on a cold November night when the cobbled roads felt like a Charles Dickens novel."

  • "The wife and I went here for our anniversary Saturday night and we were both highly impressed by the service and food selection. I would recommend the the food pairing menu. It had excellent options and they did skimp out on the portion sizes. Their signature drinks were awesome and they had a very good beer selection."

  • "Interesting menu. Some dished hit, some dishes missed. Loved the Crawfish Mac & Cheese and the Empenadas. The Smoked Sausage was way too greasy. The meats and cheeses were very good."

  • "I visited for the first time with my family for Thaksgiving dinner. They had a holiday prix fixe menu, but the food was good enough that I'd like to come again and try the regular menu. Turkey perfectly cooked, delicious glazed ham, moist prime rib. And the brussel sprouts, garlic mashed potatoes, and honey yams were wonderful. We didn't care for the cornbread stuffing and the baked beans just didn't seem to fit with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. And we found it surprising that no bread was served with the meal. The atmosphere was more that of a bar than a retaurant - very dark with the actual bar as the focal point. But all in all, we'd come again!"

  • "Upon our arrival at The Twisted Tail for our mid-day Thanksgiving meal , we were greeted immediately by the owner. The staff was bubbly, efficient , and prompt without being annoying. The Tail boasts a relaxed and casual atmosphere that lends well to one's leisurely enjoying the abundant "sides" that came with the turkey and salmon that we ordered. The pumpkin pie was a bit too sweet for my liking. However, we have already decided that The Twisted Tail will be our next Holiday destination."

  • "This is the first time we decided to go out to eat for Thanksgiving. I saw Channel 6 Action News spotlight your restaurant and decided to give it a try. Family of 4..was a wonderful experience. We ordered the prime rib, turkey and ham as the main entrees. Everything was wonderful. If I had to critique one thing. The turkey portion was very small compared to the ham and prime rib portion. However, everything was very tasty and we will definitely be back and tell our friends. Thank you!"

  • "We had received a wonderful review of the Twisted Tail, but I just was not bowled over by it. The food was good, the portions were good, the service was excellent but something seemed to be missing in the food. It looks like a great place to have drinks with friends or lovers, but I would not go back there for Thanksgiving."

  • "I can only comment on the special Thanksgiving menu which was wonderful. There was a selection of meat or fish, accompanied by delicious side dishes of garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, barbecued beans, stuffing, and brussel spouts. The dished were very favorable and interestingly prepared. The music in the background was wonderful Blues and Jazz. The staff's warm behavior made for a festive occasion."

  • "Not only did the twisted tail have the best prices in town for Thanksgiving, they served a delicious meal! The service was super ideal and the food was exactly what we wanted. The southern themed plates were exactly what we needed, two southern girls in the north for the biggest foodie holiday! We were able to eat mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing, to die for brussel sprouts, and baked beans that I wish would have been Mac and cheese. (The beans weren't horrible, they just were a tad too spicy!) To top it off, the owner hailed us a cab and held the door! What a classy touch! All in all, this restaurant is what you need in life! Thanks for making this a memorable holiday!!"

  • "The food is very good although the menu could use some more healthy veggie/fish options. The best part is live blues while you eat. If only the start time was earlier! The past 9 pm start makes it difficult for us aging folks."

  • "The brussel sprout appetizer was as good as any ever. Various grilled sea-food was (octopus) smashing and (clams) fine. There was creativity all over the menu without ever tipping into weird for novelty's sake. Definitely worth further exploration."

  • "The service was excellent. I thought they were very attentive and the chef came down to check on the food. The fish dish could have used some light sauce or olive oil. That is my only objection."
