A word from The Trident
The Trident, formerly 'Horizons", is now open!!
We recently completed our remodel and upstairs Skydeck addition showcasing the most amazing views!

In January 1981, this beautiful space was revived into Horizons restaurant. Inside is an incredible recipe of art and architecture, complemented with a resemblance of an old yacht. The ceiling mural was original to the Trident and painted by Dave Richards, creator of Janis Joplin’s infamous 1965 Porsche Cabriolet. On the outside deck, discover one of the most stunning restaurant waterfront views on the west coast, which boasts the skyline of San Francisco, Angel Island and Alcatraz. Hands down the best view in Sausalito for outdoor dining. Unfortunately, I and my dining partners were not bowled over by the food or the service, which were a let down. It was ok, but nothing special, which you would expect because of the prices and the setting. We brought out-of-town guests (from Europe), who insisted on paying and I was frankly a little embarrassed by our choice of restaurant. While they loved the location, everything else was a disappointment, from how we were treated when we asked to change tables, to the slow-ish service and the bland food. The food was not awful, just lacking in finesse. With this location, the ability to park, the stunning views this place could be so much more -- a real food destination.

Hadn't been to this scenic restaurant in years, and thought it might have been a bit boring. Couldn't have been more delighted to find it was upbeat, with terrific food quality and a great wait staff. Views of Alcatraz, Angel Island, Tiburon, and San Francisco were spectacular.

The food is fine. We both had the special...a Zesty Crab Salad on ciabatta. It was like tuna salad but with crab. Sandwich could have used more of the crab salad because the ciabatta made it more about the bread. Came with a green salad that was literally just greens, nothing else. And hardly any dressing. Maybe they should throw in a couple of tomatoes or onions...something. Anyway, the view from the deck out back is fantastic and we got to see the Blue Angels since we were there during Fleet Week. Service was terrific!

  • Best view of the bay on the water

My favorite restaurant for enjoying the bay and a great view. The restaurant seating is terraced so there's not a bad seat in the house. New to me was the delicious avocado, bacon & crab salad sandwich (on wonderful Boudin lemon-pepper brioche). A bit steep at $22 but not a single bit of crab shell or cartilage and delicious. I was proud to take out-of-town friends, who all enjoyed their salads and the same sandwich that I had. Conveniently located in downtown Sausalito, accessible by ferry, bus and bike, as well as car, it's an ideal way to spend an afternoon. The boats come by to say, "Hi", especially during the Opening of the Bay day in May, which is a blast.

Everything was very nice, just be sure your waiter or waitress understands your dinner request. We felt there was a language barrier, which resulted in a confusion about our order. We ordered 2 salads with our meal, but what we got was one salad to share and another that took the place of the side dishes. The food was good, just not what we expected. We did not want to complain and all else was very nice, so nothing was said. Our hostess was lovely and very helpful, and the waitress was nice as well, but spoke with a foreign accent and could probably use a little help with the English language.

Our party of 6 enjoyed lunch and the atmosphere of the Trident. We had ciopinno, which was a large, but tasty midday meal. For those with smaller appetites it could be shared. The other 3 had crab Louie and seafood samplers. All enjoyed. We sat indoors, so we didn't get quite the same view as outside. We found the hostess to be inhospitable. A tall, slim, woman server did an excellent job however. Two in our party arrived on the ferry from the city and had their bicycles with them. They reside in San Francisco and use bicycles as principle means of transportation. When they arrived at the Trident parking lot, where there are lots of bicycle racks, they were told rudely parking was only for Trident clients & to unlock their bikes. Duh!

The setting is wonderful, day or night. On Saturday night Trident had a cheerful hostess, a vibrant atmosphere, a good server and an interesting wine list. We hadn't been in some time and were excited to be there but the food was disappointing. Some parts of our meals were undercooked or just bland. We may try again for lunch with our next out of town company because the location is terrific.

I ordered Patrale Sole over spinach with potatoes. What I got was Dover Sole that was dry and unpalatable. The spinach was good and the potatoes were good but few. They offered to bring something else, but by then we were ready to go. The waiter, Carlos, was excellent and I was not charged for my entree. I have had good meals there in the past and I will return.

I had frequented the Trident back in the day, but not felt inspired to revisit this old gem through its many subsequent incarnations until this week when I wanted a place to take an out of town visitor. What we found besides the decor which remained essentially unchanged from the 70's( a good thing, curved wooden booths, mandala ceiling and all!) ) was reasonable service, delicious healthy food(grilled seasonal corn on the cob with miso butter, halibut on a bed of baby veggies with a mustard beurre blanc etc.) well prepared cocktails and of course the views! The extra surprise was the view of frolicking seals just a few feet away during our meal. I'll return even without a visitor in tow.

With such a wonderful location I would prefer to be able to relax and enjoy dinner without the detraction of live music. Service was good but quality of food was not up to par. The Petrale Sole was overcooked and dry. Menu has been reduced and the resulting options are somewhat limited.

Were recommended this waterfront gem by a fellow UK visitor to SF. Whilst the decor, particularly the physchedelic ceiling, and the curved wooden seating is obviously a throwback to the restaurant's past this just adds to the ambience of the place. The views across the bay are stunning, the food very good and well presented and on the night we ate we were entertained by a very accomplished jazz trio who played in the background. In all I would definitely return should I ever be in the area again.

The food and the view are wonderful. Our waiter didn't appear to care about our table. He was asked on multiple occasions for an item and needed to be reminded a second time on each occassion. There were other service issues as well. Perhaps he was just having a bad day. The food and view make it worth a try, but be forewarned.

My husband and I celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary in San Francisco. We took a drive to Sausalito and I decided on Trident because the menu had a lot of options and reviews were great. We were seated outside and had great views of Alcatraz and surrounding areas. I would have preferred to have the sun visor open because the sun felt great with the cool breeze. Other than that I was extremely happy.

Food was delicious (seafood); love the view from the windows; waitress was So gracious and service was pretty quick. Glad there are heat lamps out on the deck now! Wished I could have stolen an Old menu" off the wall, but settled for buying a Cool poster for $10 that Looks like one of the original menus. We visited the restaurant on my birthday and I was disappointed when we walked in. Our table wasn't in a great spot and I asked for another table but everything was reserved; we also had a reservation so I'm not sure why they couldn't move us since the other tables were empty at that time . The restaurant was very noisy and crowded and it felt a bit stuffy. The dishes were dirty and we had to send them back, but the food was good and service was reletively fast. The biggest problem for us was the cleanliness, or lack thereof, and the fact that they pack people in like sardines. I would probably never visit this place on any special occasion because its just not that kind of restaurant.

The prices are much higher than the 2 dollar signs indicated on Open Table, and the quality in no way matched the prices. The Caesar salad was small, for its price of $12, and no fresh ground pepper was offered by the waiter. My boyfriend and I both ordered the halibut special, and the halibut was very dry. We were hoping for better, given its past history, but it was extremely disappointing.

The Trident offers outstanding views and very good food. In particular, the lobster escargot is inventive and delicious. The only "not-so-good" aspect of my first dinner there was the service. We waited 10 minutes for menus, had to ask twice for water, had to ask for bread and were not checked on with any regularity. I would have rated Trident as 5-Star had the service been as good as the food.

I have been going to this restaurant since the 80's, when it was "Horizons". I have always loved the location and set-up of this restaurant. The food has always been so good. I was hoping to see much more pictures on the wall, etc., of the "Trident" when it was the 60's. I thought it would show much more of the history. That would have been really cool. Our waitress was wonderful, service was great, view amazing. Food...ok. Not very tasteful. But I will be back. Great set-up.

We needed a good Sunday lunch, brunch spot for a family Birthday with 7 people. Our age range was wide from 8 yrs young to 90 years. We found the Trident delightful. Great eggs benedict and outstanding Fish and Chips, second only to London. We had a great waiter who accommodated us very well. He got a little chocolate lava cupcake with a candle for the birthday gal. The view was great and the ambiance perfect for the occasion. I was pleased to be able to make a reservation since it was Sunday lunch and they also have valet parking since Sausalito can be quite busy. I also found the food soo much better than it was years ago when I was there. I know that there is new management. So this is a great spot and we will return....

Who ever owns the new Trident needs to higher a chef or at the very least a cook! I ordered the Choippino! OMG, it tasted like a can of soup poured over the seafood. The calamari was extremely chewy, not eatable, and the fish was far from fresh. My husband had the sole, it was flat and tasteless! Our son ordered the fish and chips, which was just okay. Before the so called remodel we enjoyed coming to this restaurant for the deck and the view...no view is worth a lousy meal at a high price! We will never go back.
