I first went to The Toucan in summer of 2012. The food was delicious. I went back on saturday night and it was attrocious. I didn't bother to ask, but I suspect that they sold to a new owner that retained the menu but cut costs by 70% via using complete garbage ingredients. The duck salad was clearly made from pre-bagged lettuce from a grocery store and duck that was like rubber. The rest of the meal was equally as bad. What a shame, this place was a gem! The same thing happened to Hung Ry, and it closed within one year. The Toucan will suffer the same fate. It will be out of business soon... bet on it.

we decided to go here after seeing its name in NY Mag Cheap Eats. Although it wasn't cheap, especially after sampling some of their signature drinks, we enjoyed the food and the cosy spot. We only ordered starters and sides to share, and tried about 8 dishes. except for a salty, dry pork belly special and a rather bland fish taco (in comparison to their other dishes) we liked every dish and will come back.

Second time here and I was wondering why it took two months to come back... summer, I guess. This visit was equally sweet and tasty. Love the tapas-style sharing plates, like last time. The service is perfect -- we were remembered from two months ago -- love the cocktails and, oh, everything about this place. Thinking of finding a pied-à-terre in the neighborhood so I can be closer. :)

We ate early on a weeknight before an 8pm event nearby so the place was pretty empty! That's why I can't comment on the noise level. It was great for us, we ordered 4 small plates for the 2 of us and each was especially flavorful. We would highly recommend the shrimp balls & the tasty green beans. Our server was great and he recommended a tasty cocktail! Good casual little place in this neighborhood.

The menu is limited. Appetizers are not very exciting, and the main dish list was very limited. Skip this joint and try another place in the east village; there are far too many good restaurants to waste your time here. The only nice thing was the ambiance.

Want to be nearer to The Toucan and the Lion so I can go there lots. It was an early visit pre-theater, so we were nearly the only ones dining. We stuck with the shared plates; two of us started with four of those and then added two more, just because. The roast duck and lychee salad was a great beginning, the Scotch Egg was incomparable: crispy outer duck sausage casing, wonderfully seasoned sauce. Shrimp balls likewise: crispy, savory, delicious. Honey-glazed ribs, wow! Look, just go there and try it: pick a few shared plates. You WILL want more.

I came to try their famed burger and my experience was ruined a little as one side of my burger was charred pretty badly. Maybe I came on a bad night, but I didn't think it was anything special or worth the $17. The ambiance and service were very good however.

I like the more "inventive food" aspect and the sharing plates - we didn't try any of the main dishes so i cant comment on those however, If you go - you need to have the chicken lettuce wraps which were outstandingly good and the noodle wrapped shrimp. The fried pickles were pretty good too!

They recently changed the menu, and it's still excellent - with maybe a little too much spice everywhere. The menu would benefit frmo adding the spice level on each dish.

Fantastic -- excellent combination of flavors both in the food and the cocktails. My only issue was a somewhat lacking dessert selection that didn't match the variety and excitement of the other food items on the menu. The space/seating was tight and uncomfortable. Otherwise, the ambiance was pleasant. The staff was friendly and attentive, which more than made up for the tight seating situation. Friendly service is always appreciated and only adds to the dining experience.

If you're unfortunate enough to be dine at The Toucan & The Lion at the same time as a group of seven or more, you will probably be hard pressed to hear yourself think, not to mention the conversation at your table. The tiny dining room is deafening when full. This is unfortunate because the food is consistently very good, and the cocktails hit far more often than they miss. The only letdowns coming from the kitchen were the chef's regrets that certain items had run out, and it's hard to fault a small restaurant for this particular disappointment. If The Toucan & The Lion had the boldness to say no to groups over six, I would probably be recommending to everyone I know.

  • Great food, not vegetarian friendly

Nice place. Very friendly and helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere and one of the best burgers I ate in my life. The appetizers were tasty too, and I liked my lemony and thai basil cocktail. However, the small menu is not vegetarian friendly: no vegetarian appetizers at all, and just two with fish and no meat. There is one vegetarian entree (no fish without meat entrees), that looks good on paper, but is impossibly heavy. A big amount of taro gnocchi in spiced oil. Pity for an otherwise excellent little restaurant.

A terrific East Village dining spot with excellent draft beers with great happy hour prices. The bao bun burger is great, as are the fish tacos. Casual and intimate surroundings and lighting make for a lovely dinner spot. We ate early before a show so the noise level was moderate, but can't tell what it's like later on! We'll be back!

Went for valentines day. It was a great experience. Staff was on point and very accommodating despite tending to a packed house. The food was very well-prepared, great presentation. Things tended to be a bit on the spicy side. My burger had a subtle spiciness from what I think was the cashew butter. For dessert, I got the dark chocolate panacotta with apricot whip. The presentation was very nice. A few spoonfuls in and I, once again, noticed a subtle heat! The waiter said one of the ingredients was chili powder if I remember correctly. It was a very interesting end to the evening. All-in-all a great experience and will definitely be returning to the Toucan and the Lion.
