Diner Reviews
  • "This was a perfect place for a special dinner in Richmond. Our son goes to University of Richmond and it was his dad's birthday. His dad had gone to this same restaurant in the 80's. It was a new memory for our son & daughter and a fond memory for my husband. "Win-Win" all of us! The seafood pasta was the best I have ever had anywhere! The flatiron steak was excellent. And the prime rib was done perfectly. The butter cake is a must-have for a special occasion. The atmosphere was very special and the service was five star. We will definitely return! Thank you Tobacco Company for a memory we will remember for a lifetime - made in Richmond, VA!"

  • "Seven years ago I met with my son and his bride at Tobacco Company for dinner; this was our first meeting in 25 years. So, naturally this place holds a very special place in my heart. Each time I have eaten here the food has been superb. The decor is full of history, the staff is energetic and involved. This is a MUST place to eat when your in the Richmond area... "

  • "We throughly enjoyed our Easter Brunch at the Tobacco Company on Sunday. I had not eaten there in many years but will definitely go back--especially for their Brunch menu again. Open Table definitely came through for us on a busy Easter Sunday. Thank you!"

  • "No matter what you are looking for in a restaurant, the food is what will bring you back. This restaurant is no exception. Excellent decor, excellent food, fantastic service. Great place for a wonderful dining experience with friends, family, our that special someone."

  • "This is one of the most interesting places I ever dine, really good atmosphere, the history in the building is impressive, and please if you go, it is a must to try the vintage elevator. Only reason didn't give full 5 stars is because our server was not very attentive, took a little bit too long for the drinks to come, and then we will not check on the table when we were out of beverages. The food was good, very good pork chops I had. I slight bit on the dry side, but with the sauce it was fine. "

  • "I ordered a medium well steak, but it came out almost rare. They quickly realized the mistake and recooked it to satisfaction."

  • "Our experience was memorable, delightful and just plain fantastic. We are from MN and had not dined here, but found it had high reviews. We were delighted by a one of a kind historic structure decorated immaculately, best service, private seating and the food was precisely fine dining to say the least. From start to finish....including the live music that started during dessert. No need to check the reviews to find a restaurant next time we are in Richmond. I haven't had nearly enough of this one yet!"

  • "Our visit lived up to the recommendation that was given to us by a friend. Good food, great service ,and a nice place to enjoy your evening."

  • "My wife and I had to be in town for a prom and celebrate her birthday. The scallops were great as well as the prime rib. The she crab soup was wonderful with a hint of sherry ... The waiter was a very knowledgeable man and knew the history of the building and decor. I am an executive chef and have run restaurants. I would recommend this to all. If you are in for a nice bar scene, the bar has great specials and a better value. The next time we will sit at the bar. Thanks and enjoy..."

  • "I took my two children with me to dinner. I was impressed that the children's menu had real entrees like prime rib and filet mignon. The service was excellent, and we enjoyed the live music, which from the second floor could be heard without interrupting our conversation."

  • "After reading many of the reviews I found that this is really just an average restaurant in a vintage building and great location. I had the dish that made them famious; Prime Rib. The prime rib was bland to boaring and I had to chew my way through each bite. The service was average with our waiter having to read from his notes what the specials were. Another major dissapointment was the ambience. The decor was all over the spectrum of just plain bad taste. This is billed as a building that originated in the mid-1850's and is poorly decorated like a bad 1970's restaurant. Take it back to it's origins or bring it forward to modern times."

  • "This restaurant is beautiful and very charming! Love the woodwork and the private rooms for larger parties. We had lunch there and the food was wonderful. The salmon with Creole sauce and crabmeat was particularly outstanding!"

  • "Tobacco Company is a well known well run restuarant. Girlfriend and I were not surprised by a very friendly waiter (Sterling) who did a good job. I ordered the Cowboy Ribeye which was slightly over-cooked, but still quite tasty. We ended up splitting a dessert special, Espresso Creme Brulee with strawberries and were both very impressed."

  • "The food was good, music was nice, unfortunately I guess my waiter forgot his deodorant. My wife ordered a glass of Riesling . I am sure the waiter had no idea, we lived in Europe for 13 years and knew anything of wine, because he did not ask what winery, he just left to get her a glass of wine. He spoke so low, I thought I would need to make a doctor’s appointment to see if I was going deaf. I must say he was quick to fill my water glass; however he never asked if my wife would like some more wine. I understand that perhaps he, has worked there for a while, and maybe assumed we were just some random minority couple just trying to spend our government check in a fancy place. No need to fire David, just Re-train and reevaluate him."

  • "Been going for years... The restaurant and nightclub is being poorly managed- catering more to really young crowds and appears to be going down hill more and more. Bring back the vibrant restaurant and club as it use to be!! Food preparation/appearance did not deliver. Filet mignon was chewy and not prepared as should be- almost like was frozen and then cooked immediately and bearnaise side very thick. Nightclub filled with Cigar smoke and only 15-20 people tops... Bring back blackjack and stop catering to college kids with no money or maxing out there parents credit cards..."

  • "Found The Tobacco Company on the internet, sounded interesting, asked the hotel with a positive response. It did not disappoint, the food was good, the atmosphere was outstanding and the menu pricing was not outrageous. The menu was varied, although my spouse and I both opted for meat, since we were about fished out and felt like a change. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling to Richmond."

  • "I couldn't believe how the quality of my parties food was. They served cold crab soup and the prime rib was chilly in the middle where it had been in a refrigerator. Advised the weighted of the cold entrée. He left with the plate only to return with another cold piece of meat and a hotter plate to serve it on. Never again!"

  • "I am from Richmond, but brought two Italian visitors who come from the food capital of central Italy. They were very impressed with all aspects of the dining experience. The domestic wine chosen to accompany the steaks was spot-on. The steaks were prepared perfectly and had flavor unmatched by anything available in Italy. The interior decor was unique to the area and was impressive. The only complaint was that the staff attention drops off towards the end of the dining experience."

  • "we enjoyed our food very much. Our reservation was for 6 p.m.. Apparently that is also during happy hour and the music was blaring so loud that we could not carry on a conversation. We did ask the waitress to turn the music down and she did have that accomplished but it was still much too loud for our what I would consider a dinner house"

  • "While this restaurant is considered quite fancy/upscale, what I'm not impressed by usually is the arrogance/cockishness of the wait staff. This time was no exception. Instead of being warm & friendly, the waiter was on the arrogant side, somethimes reciting off the daily specials standing next to my guest, so I could hear nothing and had to ask him to repeat. He was also pushy toward the end , when we wanted to continue enjoying our Pino Noir. He gave us at least 2 reminders indirectly hinting that we should leave. When I mentioned my allergy to shell fish, the waiter just said ' we take those kind of things seriously'. In most good restaurants mention of allergy brings the chef/manager to the table, to find out more."

  • "Was looking for great eats to end a day celebrating - found it here at the Tobacco Company restaurant. Really enjoyed the artichoke spinach dip and our entrees of seared scallops and Mahi Mahi were excellent. The wine list is extensive providing a wide selection and price range. The staff was professional yet friendly. I'm looking forward to visit in again with friends and family."

  • "Took my wife here for a little getaway and some adult time. From the minute we walked in the door we were treated well. We had a casual dinner on the second floor, but it might be nice to come back dressed a bit more formally for the third floor. Really enjoyed the architecture of the building and general ambiance of the restaurant. Our server, David, was exceptionally knowledgeable of the menu and the special ways the dishes are prepared. He was courteous, dignified, and pleasant, and we enjoyed him very much. He was always there when we needed him but not intrusive. I had the NY Strip and my wife had the filet. Both were excellent. Everything about the meal was enjoyable, and we can't wait to come back. Took the Butter Cake home: awesome!"

  • "Started with the she-crab soup, and it was delicious. Then had the rockfish served with brussels sprouts and a sweet potato hash with crab meat and virginia ham. Sprouts were a little salty and the dish overall was not well balanced. Their signature dessert, the butter cake, was overcooked and dry. Server didn't seem to be that well versed with the menu and was sometimes difficult to find. As a whole, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't the best dinner ever either."

  • "The ambience was exceptional, the food and serive were great. They had a live band that was supposed to start at 9:30 PM, but it was 9:40 when we left and the band hadn't begun yet. The overall experience was great and we look to coming back."

  • "The food was excellent as always. I was surprised at the at the attitude of the waiter. Whenever he came to the table he began talking over our conversation without saying excuse me or I'm sorry to interrupt. When he first approached our table and said "good eventing, how are you?" Before he gave us a chance to answer he answered his own question with a smart remark. He continually interrupted our conversation during the meal."

  • "Tobacco Company is excellent for business luncheons. Other than not letting you sit while waiting for guests, the restaurant does a nice job in providing a good corporate environment for luncheons and dinner."

  • "This meticulously restored, historic building is even more beautiful inside!! Take the time to appreciate the spectacular preservation on all three floors in the this delightful restaurant unique to tobacco production in the 1800s South. The food and service is equally fabulous with menus containing many DELICIOUS meal varieties. The food was scrumptious, and the service was impeccable! I can't wait to return!"

  • "The decor is the calling card here, but the food is great. Steak was cooked a little underdone. Fish was perfectly cooked. Some dishes were the best I've ever had - pecan pie, black-eyed peas, grilled brussel sprouts. Some others were excellent, but I have no basis for comparison as I've never had them before, like the butter cake and cheese pie. Some were just really good, like the key lime pie with coconut crust The main dishes didn't disappoint, just didn't stand out. I tried filet mignon, rockfish, and the meat loaf. My favorite of the 3 was the meat loaf, but we had it made without the mushroom gravy. Still, it was exceptional and unique, with an almost smoky flavor. Service was quick and attentive without being obtrusive. Recommended."

  • "Tobacco co is in an old factory building that has been redone to look like a lounge from the Roaring 20s. The unique decor is complimented by the high quality food. The caesar salad is excellent. The molasses pork chops were equally good. Our server was very knowledgeable, but he tendedto disappear."
