  • "Nice view of the lake paired with good service doesn't make up for the food quality. everything that was ordered was delivered burned or very well-done. Bottomless bloody Mary's/mimosas are super weak."

  • "I love to eat here, mainly for the view and the happy hour. The only thing that's a bummer is that they don't serve happy hour if you're in the restaurant area, you need to be at the bar. Otherwise, this place is a really nice place to go for dinner or brunch."

  • "I don't understand the purpose of this site that gets between me and where I want to go. It's a nuisance."

  • "Beautiful setting and the live jazz swing band awesome. The service was incredibly slow from the beginning, but picked up as the evening went on. The food was terrible. Portion size was embarrassingly small. Price were high. I have been there twice for an evening of dinner and music with different friends. I had to apologize for the food, slow service and portion of food. I would return for after dinner drinks in the bar and music, but never again for their dinners."

  • "Overall rating is less than excellent because they ran out of food that we had ordered. Poor planning on the chef's part. Otherwise the service and ambiance was fantastic."

  • "We appeared to be the only diners who weren't resident or visiting residents on a Monday evening. But the food was good, the view amazing. This is a hidden jewel and deserves more business"

  • "Serving their demographics well. I made reservations here after looking at the menu and seeing they have 4stars. I will enjoy this restaurant when i am 85 but not a day younger. As we were brought to our table we noticed the median age was well above 75 and out table was surrounded by walkers from the surrounding tables. The food itself was okay, nothing to brag about. We ordered steak and egg, the steak was order med rare and came out well done. The French toast was diner average nothing special. My eggs Benedict was tasty but everything was served with bland homefries made from russet potatoes. The view is beautiful. The service is attentive. This restaurant potential to be that must go to restaurant but the food is just mediocre. "

  • "My experience here was awesome!! Our server Jube was fantastic!! She was very attentive and did not allow our bottomless mimosas to get close to the bottom lol :) The chicken and waffles were amazing!! "

  • "The Terrace Room is an excellent place for larger group brunches. Everyone in the group enjoyed their food and the 1920's style ambiance of the restaurant. The eggs Benedict with home fries was delicious and the Mimosa's were prepared with just the right amount of orange juice and bubbly. The large windows lit up the room and provided great views of Lake Merritt. The staff was very friendly, polite, attentive, and accommodating to our large group. I would recommend The Terrace Room for brunch and will definitely eat here again. "

  • "We dined at the Terrace Room primarily to listen to the jazz band, Chops, which is excellent. We loved the music and dancing and the general ambiance created by the gracious layout of the space and the magnificent urban view. Frankly, we weren't overwhelmed by the food. Neither of our dishes showed either the thought or the preparation that would have warranted the prices. We had a fragrant and full-bodied Chardonnay by the glass. The per glass price was excellent. We will probably return for the music, but will order from the bar menu rather than the dinner menu."

  • "I chose this restaurant for Easter brunch BECAUSE of the bottomless Mimosas & a la carte menu. Easter Sunday was different, it was buffet. Overall the experience was good. The french toast was hard, the bottomless mimosa was mentioned at the end of my meal."

  • "I took my husband to dinner for his birthday. We like going to a neighborhood restaurant and have been here before. The service was excellent. The meal was tasty, on the home style side. The view was incredible and we felt like we were in a beautiful private space. I especially recommend this restaurant to locals who are looking for a little escape from chaos. "

  • "We found "Chops" very enjoyable for my husband and I and for my 89 year old Dad and his date. The view of Lake Merritt is great and the food delicious. We all appreciated our filet mignon and salads, wine and amaretto sours. This was our second visit and was as gratifying as the first."

  • "I had the salmon, she had the sirloin. Both were excellent. I liked the German chocolate cake more than she did only because I favor coconut. The live music was wonderful. So was the view of Lake Merritt. Big crowd that night."

  • "The view was nice, but service was spotty and inattentive. My dish of chilaquiles was awful. The eggs were overcooked, hard and the rest of the dish was a mess with crazy big chunks of chicken and heavy sauce. The only saving grace was the waffle, which was shared at the table. There was a jazz band playing, which was quite loud and my friends and I had to shout at each other across the table. Even after voicing our concern to the server, nothing really changed. In fact, the music got louder. I will never be back."

  • "I have lived in the area for over 70 years. This was the first (and last) time I have been to this restaurant. In its heyday, it may have been a fine restaurant...but it is not so today. The view is outstanding, the food was terrible. The shrimp in the cocktail tasted old; the Caesar salad was sparse and had very little flavor. Steak was acceptable but nothing to write home about"

  • "I ordered the salmon with pasta and while the fish was perfectly grilled the rest of the dish lacked seasoning. My friend ordered meatloaf and it was very dry and lacked seasoning."

  • "mighty scrumptious, very pleasant space. made a spectacular 1st impression of Oakland for my folks visiting from afar. definitely a more white-haired crowd, but that don't mean it ain't a proper spot: it sho nuff is."

  • "The Terrace Room has a very lovely view of Lake Merritt, enhanced by the full moon. For Valentine's Day they had a nice jazz band playing oldies but goodies. The dinner special(s) were good, but nothing to write home about, and the servers seemed to be a bit overworked, although pleasant and friendly. I'd go back there again on a less crowded night to sample their regular menu."

  • "My girlfriend and I decided to go come here for the hallmark holiday last minute. We arrived a little late but they still honored our reservation. Our server, Christo, was great. With the restaurant being so busy he was still able to provide us with great service. The food on the Valentine's Day menu was ok. Nothing great, but not bad either. I would like to come back to try their regular menu. Oh, they also had a live band playing which was pretty cool. The view from our window seat was really nice as well."

  • "I've lived all over the Bay Area for most of my adult life. My friends and I are in the habit of going to one historic hotel in Oakland if we wanted a great view and brunch in Oakland. After going to the Terrace Room this past Sunday, I may not return to the other hotel, or at least not as often. The room is charming and comfortable; the lake view is calming and beautiful; the wait staff are attentive, patient, and knowledgeable; the music is perfectly selected and played for a lazy Sunday afternoon; the menu is diverse and interesting with something for everyone; and the food is tasty and filling. It was simply a glorious experience. More information about the parking situation would be helpful."

  • "Once a nightclub, now a slightly faded but still classy dining room for the residence hotel, Terrace Room has a revamped kitchen that is doing some outstanding meat dishes. Food is not fancy in concept, but neither is it fashionably scant. The salads lightly dressed (yes!); the lamb tenderloin, flatiron steak, and pork cutlet were nicely handled. Note that kitchen tends towards the more well-done side; I specified "rare side of medium-rare" and it came a perfect MR, whereas spouse's "medium-rare" came to the more done side. It's a good, modestly priced meal with fine grilled meats and properly dressed salads; plus a great view and classy old surroundings."

  • "I have been to the Terrace Room many times and brought out of town friends here before because it is a great location with great views. However my most recent experience was extremely disappointing to say the least. Cold food, incorrect orders, time spent waiting for our food....in the end we left hungry and had to have our entire bill comped for the inconvenience. It is unfortunate because this was my go to spot for brunch. I doubt after this experience I will likely not be returning to the restaurant even after years of faithful patronage."

  • "We really like this place. I think it is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. The service has always been very good. The wait staff go out of their way to take good care of their customers The food is decent I had the steak & fries for dinner - the steak was a little thinner than I expected but it was flavorful. The place has lovely view of the lake."

  • "View and ambiance was very nice. Good place for a meeting. Food good, not fabulous, but pricing good. Service was terrible. Had to get up from the table several times to find the waitress to take our drink order, our food order, to get a drink refill, to order coffee, to get check. When we complained to the manager got "Sorry, we are busy today." They weren't...tables empty. Took over 2 hours for lunch and we ordered only one course."

  • "We were fairly disappointed with our brunch. We have had brunch here before and it was great, but this time it was off. We were hoping to show our SF friends a great Oakland experience and this fell short. No butter with the grits and they were fairly tasteless, the home fried potatoes were overcooked and also tasteless, and the Classic Joe had just a piece or two of spinach and was also bland. Chintzy butter on the English muffin. I was afraid to ask our friends how theirs was, they didn't seem to enjoy their meals and we were too embarrassed by our choice of restaurant. We may come back to enjoy the view and hope this was just one bad experience, but won't bring friends back."

  • "I realize that restaurants serving buffets don't want you to have a doggy bag as it encourages you to pile on the food, however, I went back for a taste of the salmon and more of the wonderful steamed vegetables including brussel sprouts. I must have taken a 2 ounce portion of salmon (I cut it in half with the spatula before putting it on my plate) and two tables spoons of vegetables. Being a Weight Watcher, I realized my eyes were bigger than my stomach after one bite of salmon. (My first plate was average 2 oz beef, 2 oz turkey My waiter brought box to a couple at the table next to us. I asked for a box I was refused. I was told they were resident. Hotel was not serving supper. I hated to see my food thrown away, yet I was denied a box."

  • "This was my third time brunching at the Terrace Room, after first being introduced to the place as the location of a friend's wedding reception. The location by the Lake and view of the Lake are perfect, and although they have a small menu, they had something for everyone (hearty, meaty options, vegan options, and sweet and savory brunch items). Everyone in my party really liked their food. There were also a pianist and standing bassist playing jazz in the background. I'll definitely go for brunch again!"

  • "Food was okay. Roast beef was good. Some of the other side dishes were too dry. Live band was nice, not too noisy. Mainly seniors eating at the restaurant. Felt a little out of place with our 5 year old. We were probably the youngest family there for dinner. Waitress seemed friendly but did not return our credit card and we left without realizing it! We left 2 messages about our missing card but no one bothered to call us back."

  • "Dinner for 2 at the Thanksgiving Day buffet came out to 124 dollars. The food was mediocre at best. Should have gone to Lake Chalet a few blocks over instead."

  • "Today, Thanksgiving, I came the Terrace Room for the first time. I was impressed by the staff's professionalism and the extra effort in hospitality The food was good. Even though they automatically add 15% gratuity to your bill, I tacked on another 5% because of the exceptional service. The only reason I did not give this restaurant five stars is because I thought the food overpriced. Their web site lists meals as $30 or less. My bill came out to a total of $69, including one drink. It's a good thing I came with an empty stomach because I pigged out on second servings and desserts."

  • "Terrace Room has great environmental qualities. The room os all glass and has a stupendous view of the Lake and passing scene. Its very light and open. There was a man playing the piano and singing old 50's tunes by people like Nat King Cole. The Music was beautiful. The price for lunch including 2 strong cocktails was super reasonable. We had burgers, which were tasty, But the reason to go to The Terrace Room is for the atmosphere. I was told that Friday nights there is live jazz and dancing. I will go back again and again. Remember the food is okay, really good enough, but the room and music is the star of the show."
