A word from The Terrace at the Charlotte Inn
Some of New England’s most acclaimed cuisine is found at The Terrace at The Charlotte Inn. Classic American cuisine showcases many ingredients from Martha’s Vineyard’s own farms and seas, and its bounty of local gardens. The result is at once classic and contemporary. Sumptuous meals are presented amidst stunning surroundings. Whether it is by flickering candlelight in the glass-paned conservatory dining room, or beneath the stars on a terrace enclosed by ivy-covered lattice, there is no more romantic or elegant setting in which to enjoy an evening, be it a wonderful night out or for any special occasion. With the experience of having run the Relais & Chateaux hotel for over 40 years, The Charlotte Inn is delighted to now own and operate The Terrace. Executive Chef Justin Melnick has quickly established a dedicated following of regular guests, and is a must-try restaurant for anyone visiting Martha's Vineyard. The Terrace serves dinner to the public nightly in season.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The Charlotte Inn is amazing, so it's wonderful that this excellent restaurant finds its home there. Th menu has a wide selection with a very reasonable price range. The staff are attentive, yet not over bearing. There is no place on the Island that compares in terms of ambience, quality of food and beverage, and caliber of wait staff. The dress code is strict, however it's nice to look around and see everyone in attire appropriate for fine dining. The policy of no cell phones is also great. Guests were actually engaged in one another rather than texting, or worse, talking on their phones."

  • "After almost 40 years of dining here sporatically, this restaurant is still one of the most exquisite dining experiences the Vineyard has to offer."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at the Terrace. The staff works as a team always timely in meeting your needs, never obtrusive. The food was prepared to perfection. I had the lobster and my wife had the scallop special. We dine a lot at the many fine restaurants in Charleston SC and the Terrace was as good or better than the best of these. We sat outside on a pleasant summer night and that was great but with the windows and views of their gardens the setting is romantic from any table."

  • "Wonderful service and meal! Could not have had a better meal for our anniversary!"

  • "The venue at this restaurant continues to be outstanding, but not so the food. The chef comes out and talks to you, but the seasoning and general taste are simply not up to the prices. Martha's Vineyard is hardly the place to go for fine dining. The Terrace is one of the reasons why."

  • "Having booked the Charlotte Inn as a treat for ourselves we were so disappointed to find what can only be described as very ordinary food that we could cook at home but better! The room is just beautiful, warm and welcoming filled with beautiful antique furniture a real country hotel in good taste. However the food was a far cry from what we remembered and what is more interesting is that apart from our charming waiter nobody seemed to care- we were told by the owner or manager that she hoped the rest of our evening was better! Won't be going back and will tell our friends to avoid until the establishment 'wakes up'."

  • "We've been to this restaurant several times over the years, but this visit was our first since the Charlotte Inn's newest chef was in attendance. Every aspect of the evening was enjoyable, from the greeting upon our arrival, to the conversation with staff as we left...and everything in between. Impeccable service...very good food, lovely surroundings. A perfect choice for a special evening. Pricey for sure, but worth treating yourself, especially if you're celebrating something special."

  • "We finally got around to trying The Terrace this past weekend for my birthday celebration. Although they have been open a year it took us awhile to get there. What was I waiting for?! We absolutely loved our dining experience in every way! The decor is magical, our table was in a private corner which we asked for, the Manhattan cocktails were out of this world and the food was delish! Our waiter was content to let us sip our cocktail without rushing us. Gary and Paula know how to do things top notch and The Terrance is no exception. Your hard work paying attention to details does not go unnoticed. Thank you for a gem of a restaurant."

  • "Celebrated a special birthday on a weekend trip to the vineyard. Made sure to book the best restaurants for this and on the birthday night the Terrace at the Charlotte Inn was the highlight of the weekend. Service as top notch. Of course the food was excellent but the presentation and the attention to details and the process made me feel so special."

  • "What can I say about the Terrace, other than that it was sublime in every way? The dining room is breathtaking, the food is beautifully presented and perfectly prepared... the whole experience was lovely. The service was very good as well, but we were there just past the high season on the Vineyard so I presume they may have been training some newer staff, as it was the only thing I would not have rated impeccable. Overall though we certainly had no real complaints. The price tag is also incredibly fair when you consider a similar meal in Manhattan would be double or even three times as much. If you are in Edgartown, or really anywhere on the Vineyard, make a reservation and treat yourself to a meal here, you won't be disappointed!"

  • "My wife and I visited Martha's Vineyard for the first time over the week, and we decided on The Terrace for the dinner of our 6th year wedding anniversary. The atmosphere immediately impresses you, as you step through the richest and sophisticated of rooms before being seated. Our reservation was for 8pm on a weekday, so it wasn't very busy - which was extra nice since it remained quiet and romantic. The waiters took allowed us to enjoy our every minute there, never being pesky but always very accommodating. The food was excellent, we tried the lobster and avocado salad which I can't recommend enough and both our steaks were cooked perfectly and tasted wonderfully. I only wish we saved room for desert! If we do return to MV, we'll be back!"

  • "We chose the Terrace to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary and were very happy with our choice. The wait staff were very attentive, the restaurant itself was lovely, and the food was delicious. I had the swordfish filet which was excellent, and my husband had the scallops. We shared the chef's nightly appetizer plate, and that was delicious too. The wine selection was good, and overall, we thought it was a very classy place. It's nice that there is a dress code!"

  • "The service was absolutely impeccable. And the food was almost as good. Lastly, it was so nice seeing male customers dress appropriately in a nice restaurant. The next night we dined at Atria, and many men were wearing shorts."

  • "The restaurant is beautiful and exactly what I expect from a Relias & Chateaux property. We were seated and waited probaly 15 minutes for our server to come over and acknowledge us. Not accepatable for such a restuarant. I didn't seem to see any manager on the floor supervising and may be the reason for disarray. Finally once our orders were in our server had taken an assistant outside to the terrace and seemed to berate her for some reason right in front of our table. Again unacceptable for a Relais & Chateaux spot. Overall the food was outstanding, but service and attitude of server soured what should have been an amazing expierence. I give credit to the Chef for touching our table. I would return again for the amazing food."

  • "My husband and I were on Martha's Vineyard and stayed at the Inn where the Terrace is located. We had a wonderful dinner. It was a beautiful evening and the food and ambience were outstanding. When we return to the Vineyard we will be sure to stay at the Inn and dine at the Terrace again."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 22 anniversary recently at The Terrace. The staff is very attentive without being annoying. The ambience was great. The food was delicious. I had the scallops and my husband had the pork chops. He said they were the best he ever had (and this is something he frequently orders when we go out). My only complaint was that the beet salad had the equivalent of maybe 1/4 of 1 beet, on it (4 paper thin slices). The flavor of this salad was great, but disappointed in the amount of beet! Don't let this stop you from trying out The Terrace..."

  • "A beautiful setting in Edgartown wth a lovely terrace dining room. The food however is not well-prepared or conceived. Two steaks not cooked as requested, both overdone and overseasoned with pepper. Similarly overcooked and tough lobster tail served with a very small amount of flavorless sauce and bland side dish of barley. Cheese plate was perfunctory and served with dry crackers and the tiniest dollop of honey and there was a very heavy, crudely flavored rice pudding. Service is spotty and confused but that would have been tolerable had the kitchen turned out high quality dishes. For fine dining in Edgartown, I would recommend l'Etoile which is vastly superior."

  • "Welcome to the world of Chef Melnick. The ever growing and evolving world. A fantastic team from hostess to service to dining to sweets, to potions - they have it all. The restaurant is over loaded in victorian "stuff" but thats not the Chef's fault. What IS his fault is his ability to make flawless meals - that are a boat ride away from ME!! Enjoy the tribute to his grandfather with a cocktail that is anything but a regular classic (curious? well, ask...). A stickler for local and organic, his ingredients are carefully selected and masterfully put together. Like the sweet, salty and creamy flavors and textures of his fig and blue cheese risotto. Pricy. Worth it."

  • "The Terrace at the Charlotte Inn is a fantastic gem of a restaurant. The food is fantastic and the surroundings are beautiful. Antiques are everywhere and it's as if you are transported to an earlier time. No cell phones, gentlemen need to wear jackets. We had the risotto and it was some of the best I have ever had. The dessert was equally as good. I would highly recommend The Terrace."

  • "I ate here for dinner and breakfast and it surpassed my expectations both times. I had dinner by the fireplace in the beautiful Green Room. The fried oysters are lightly battered and delicious, an upscale twist on a New England classic. My swordfish entree was very fresh, perfectly cooked, and garnished with locally-grown baby "bull's blood" beet greens (nice touch). The service was top notch. They suggested a great pinor noir to pair with my swordfish. The chef personally checked on our table and answered all my questions about where the ingredients came from and how they were prepared. Breakfast was great--they made my veggie egg white omelet to order; it was one of the best I've ever had. The Terrace was a true 5-star experience."
