The TavernBetter Service Can Only EnhanceThe Tavern came highly recommended from several friends. Waiter was pleasant but seemed distracted to the point of dysfunction. Not that we were in a rush, but some attention, or noticing of what was going on at the few tables he was responsible for attending to, would have been nice. Waiter didn't notice butter was used up, despite my tipping the small bowl on its side which should have looked awkward. No offering of coffee/cappuchino/dessert wine with dessert or following dessert was made. The food was excellent; steak was done to perfection. Side of Asparagus and broccoli were both nicely done as well. Wine selection by the bottle was excellent. We loved the complimentary lentil spread with crisp toasts. We ordered the soft shell crab appetizer which had a delicious sauce. The decor is almost over the top, with all the sparkly chandeliers, flowery wallpaper and doodads. It might have felt suffocating if the food wasn't so good and the service wonderful. I had the Shrimp Acapulco for an appetizer and my wife the steamed mussels. Both were exceptional. For entrees I had the 8 ounce filet which was perfectly charred on the outside, tender on the inside - the taste made me slow down and savor each bite. My wife had sautéed striped bass which she loved. I did taste her entree and really enjoyed it. I may order this on our next visit. It's just so difficult to say no to that filet...
The entrees are served ala carte, so for our sides my wife chose wild rice and assorted mushrooms. These were also extraordinary delights.
