  • "A perfect last minute reservation for eight friends. Service was excellent and the food was very good at a fair price. Everyone enjoyed the evening and I would go back again!"

  • "Although the decor is somewhat dated, the food is outstanding. Great service and a remarkable menu made this dining experience the highlight of our trip to Charleston. Highly recommend it if you like good food..."

  • "Mary Catherine was our waitress and she is an asset to this restaurant. She was attentive without being intrusive, smiled and was polite. Very good food. Inviting presentation."

  • "The food is simply amazing. For appetizers, we ordered the shrimp and grits martini and fried shrimp and it was out of this world. The best shrimp and grits I've ever eaten. For entrees, my wife ordered the crab cakes with asparagus and macaroni and cheese and I ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffles were jalapeno and bacon with a maple drizzle and a side of braised collards. I ate everything but the plate. I also ordered a planters punch cocktail which was just the right amount of alcohol. Our waitress was amazing. Will definitely go back when I am in Charleston again."

  • "Dining in Charleston back in January and again this summer we thought we could not find anything but amazing food. Swamp Fox was not horrible, but by no means the level of food found throughout the city. A southern favorite "chicken & waffles" was done the same way as my daughters chicken fingers, not crispy and dried out chicken breasts. I expected to find a better dish here in the south. Service was awkward except for the hostess whom seemed to know more about hospitality and service than either of the two servers. There are so many amazing choices in charleston, don't waste your time on hotel bar ambiance and mediocre food."

  • "Tried Swamp Fox for a birthday dinner. Food was good. Service was good. Piano player played music that wasn't our taste but good if you liked it. Overall a little bit disappointing but most likely due to our too high expectations. Would recommend but not for a special occasion."

  • "Generally hotel restaurants do not get a lot of press because they usually only get their guest for breakfast or quick lunch or dinner. This place is worth going too. Go check them out for yourself."

  • "The chicken and biscuits entree left a lot to be desired. The biscuits tasted like mush and the gravy was bland. I have eaten here before and returned because of past good experiences. I will not be returning."

  • "We enjoyed our meals- everything was fresh, hot & well seasoned. The salmon and fried chicken were great & the bread was delicious. The service was outstanding. Everyone was friendly and gracious. The restaurant was quiet & comfortable. The live music provided by a pianist was a nice touch."

  • "We stayed at the hotel and decided to try it out because it was raining and also got good reviews. Service was very good and the food was better normal hotel fare. My fish was good but a tad dry. My enjoyed her July - three course meal."

  • "Swamp Fox was great. I think that with so many restaurants in Downtown Charleston, people won't go to a hotel restaurant, because there was hardly anybody there. This was definitely a great spot to eat dinner. My fried chicken had delicious breading and the chicken itself was so juicy. It's a shame more don't stop in."

  • "Great service. Crab cakes were great except for they sat in a pool of oil, mashed potatoes were soupy, roasted asparagus was very good. We went because of great reviews and were highly disappointed. Restrooms were a smelly, dirty pit. This place could be a great gem and is not window shutters very dirty as well. Wine and bread was very good. Our waitperson gave us great service. Except when I told her about the greasy crab cakes and soupy mashed potatoes and she was complacent about it. Nothing special about this place."

  • "Hotel restaurants are usually ok. Swamp Fox is an exception to the rule. Our first night in Charleston after a 12 hour drive we didn't feel very adventurous. Our waitress, Gracie was very nice. She suggested the waffle and chicken and she was spot on. It was very good. The jalapeño waffles had me apprehensive but it was very good, tasty and not spicy hot, and the chicken was tasty, moist, a very nice dish. Pecan crusted salmon was equally good. The salads were excellent, and could have been a meal in itself. We ended up eating at Swamp Fox later in the week, and we were not disappointed. Nicole was the waitress and she was delightful, and attentive."

  • "Hubby and I ate here on a Thursday evening, our last day on vacation in the area. It was 1924 Jazz Night with live piano jazz. I wish we had dined at the Swamp Fox earlier in the week. There were a few critical reviews so we went elsewhere first. Some folks must be very hard to please because our entire experience was flawless. Hubby had the halibut and said it was prepared perfectly. I ordered the 1924 Jazz Night Special. You can't beat three courses for $19.24. The first course was Waldorf Salad. The main course was a petite fillet served with scalloped potatoes and mushrooms and was just enough. The last course was pound cake served with a berry compote. Everything was exquisite. We highly recommend The Swamp Fox, esp on jazz night!"

  • "The Oysters Rockefeller (basically Fried Oysters on Spinach) the food was good (Fried Green Tomatoes and the Fried Chicken were excellent). The service was also good but the room itself is tired. That was good for us - with 6 we were able to hear all of our conversations."

  • "Located in the Marion Hotel. Easy parking nearby. Menu was superb with a local Market offering salad, entree and dessert. Found Basil Hayden bourbon as well. Wonderful server made the night just fine. Pork chop was excellent along with a market catch fish. But then the pecan pie and also a peach and carmel pecan pudding. Excellent coffee too. A night to remember."

  • "The Jazz Pianist and menu were very relaxing. We enjoyed the complimentary bottle of wine (for staying at the hotel) along with the 1924-era menu. The beef was cooked to order perfectly, and the service was on-the-spot and friendly."

  • "Food was fantastic. Chopped salad was the best salad of any kind I have ever had. I can't understand why it didn't have more business. Cheese plate was great. Crab cake fantastic. Hush puppies different but very very good. Would definitely go back here for the food any time."

  • "We had dinner at Hank's the night before. Hank's, while packed with diners, was barely ok and a restaurant I would not return to. The Swamp Fox was excellent but with few diners. The shrimp and grits martini was just wonderful--rich, creamy, tasty. The $30 3-course pork chop dinner was terrific as was a stuffed pork entree. The service excellent. "

  • " Music on Sundays for brunch until 12 noon. We were in town for the Spoletto festival and got there a little late having just missed the piano player. The brunch had a very nice selection including many of the hotel's Southern specialities - delicious grits, stuffed french toast, pecan cinnamon buns and fabulous biscuits and gravy. The omelette station had closed so our server was nice enough to have our omelettes made in the kitchen- delicious and fluffly! Also great is the location, in the heart of the action right across from the the main park/square in Charleston and parking in the garage next door. Our table near the window allowed for great people watching as they walked along the sidewalk. Excellent and friendly service!"

  • "The hotel restaurant was convenient for dinner after arriving to the hotel. That's the high point. For a place that was basically deserted (maybe 3 other tables with patrons and a couple at the bar) the service was friendly but spotty and slow. Our server did not know the menu in much detail and couldn't tell us what the kitchen was out of until she returned to the table after taking our order. I ended up having the southern fried chicken. It was dry, with little flavor. My dining partner had the pork chops which came to the table barely warm. The mash potatoes wouldn't melt butter. It had taken so long for our meal to come and it was getting late in to the evening, we just went ahead and ate the food and than headed to our room."

  • "Very much enjoyed our evening at the Swamp Fox. The food was fresh and delicious. It is much appreciated that local food sources are utilized. The piano player was fabulous. The only slight disappointment was the texture of the homemade ice cream - it tasted wonderful, but was a tad bit icy. "

  • "Our anniversary dinner at Swamp Fox started with fried chicken livers, artfully prepared with peppers and onions, and included heavenly grouper and an expertly crusted sirloin strip steak, southern-style, with flair. A to-die-for pecan pie with homemade ice cream topped it off. Meanwhile, a steady stream of tourists and wannabe nightlife filed by the picture windows, an entertaining view of the human comedy with sun-drenched Marion Square hosting a game of touch football in the background. • "We went for my son's graduation with a party of 8. The good thing was that we had our own table in the banquet area adjacent to the main restaurant away from the families with babies. The food was ok - the prime rib special was near tasteless and even the medium rare was almost dry, crab cakes had no sauce and were over some red crunchy rice which added nothing to the dish, The best dish was the salmon, which apparently was quite good. As we were the only people in the room, our service was spotty. The best part was that my dad, who is 89 and hard of hearing, could hear everything in our room to ourselves and thus, really enjoyed the evening."

  • "Breakfasts were very good, with very good service. Stayed at the hotel over a very busy weekend, graduation and Mother's Day. Wanted to have a quick lunch on Sunday, Mother's Day, but was told we had to have reservations. Was not aware of this, saw no notices posted."

  • "A cozy but unpretentious spot in a comfortable old hotel. Very friendly, accommodating service and delicious food that was reasonably priced. Doesn't get the attention it deserves in a town loaded with great restaurants...I will be back."

  • "Found Open Table while surfing the internet and by using it found The Swamp Fox. Nice upscale restaurant. The food is a little on the high side...but on Saturday evenings - what a deal! Prime Rib on Saturday $19.99 for an 8 oz prime rib, and two sides. Can't beat that and it was awesome! We had a wonderful time. Not a high volume restaurant....less seating, but had a piano player too. The ambience was incredible. And to top off our night, my family (big CA Angel fans), were able to meet Troy Glaus who was dining there (former Angel player). Totally made their night. He and his wife were very gracious as my husband and sons said hello."

  • "Food was outstanding! Interesting take on shrimp and grits and bacon wrapped pork chops moist and tasty. atmosphere was lacking. Loved the piano player but the resturant was too loud and bright to enjoy it. dim the lights and turn the piano towards the resturant might make all the difference."

  • "For an area overcrowded with college students, it's nice to find a place that offers a bit of quiet with good food and service. A great place for a pre-concert or pre-theatre drink and light meal."
