Diner Reviews
  • "Great view of the sunset - we did a large birthday party there with 16 people. We kept changing the number of expected people and our guests had numerous "weird" requests throughout the dinner -- nevertheless the staff handled all of this graciously and professionally. The food was good, people were happy and the evening was a success. We were seated upstairs, which was great. Had we been downstairs, I suspect we would have found it to be too loud for a dinner conversation, but as it turned out the seating was great."

  • "There you are, right across the street from the Pacific Ocean! How many places offer that? This is a great restaurant to enjoy with friends and have a good time. The staff is friendly and accommodating. This is my birthday month so I am going again next week with another group of friends and we will probably spend the entire afternoon there...watching dolphins, drinking and having fun!"

  • "We had a fantastic meal here. Our waitress was so nice, and they gave us the best table for my birthday - on the top floor where we watched the sunset over the blue Pacific with cool breezes. The food was delicious and affordable and the location makes you feel you are at an island resort. We parked at Point Dume and hiked to see the sea lions, then swam at the beach. We enjoyed walking back from dinner, watching the sun go down. It was the most memorable birthday."

  • "The noise level is very high, food is OK, service is OK, view of the beach is good if you can get a table by the window (reservations don't insure window seating). Clam chowder was good both times we went this last week. Wish I had just ordered the chowder and saved the $60 on the entrees. The rest of the meal reminded me too much of cruise ship fare. Wine list was good. Overall it's a great place to go after a stroll on the beach if you are looking for an energetic loud scene but not a winner if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet meal to watch the sunset. Supposedly upstairs is quieter but open only on the weekends."

  • "Good food, unique location. Get a window seat if you don't mind a breeze through an open window while you watch the sun set."

  • "Although the food was very good, and the staff very nice, the food service was just OK. We had to ask more than once for drinks and food items that were ordered. We were a party of five, and there was quite a time lag between when the first and last person's entrées were served."

  • "Food is great. VIEW IS AMAZING! Just fun to act like a local and eat great food. Can't say enough about it!"

  • "We went for a birthday brunch. Were lucky to get a window table, with windows open to feel like you are on the beach which is actually 50ft way. The food was excellent. We were not a sea food foody but if you are, all fresh sea food bar. The service was also a surprise extremely prompt and fun. This is our new favorite place. This is a small restaurant so I do recommend reservation. Reserve on line. Enjoy!!!!!"

  • "Well, this location is unbelievable -- literally on the sand with a killer view, and a cooperative pod of dolphins that frequent the area. Service was slow and the food was fine, but the ambience made up for it. You don't come here for the food -- you come to get a slice of the Bu that you can't get anywhere else."

  • " So loud that I couldn't have a conversation. Bread was overly done and hard as a rock. Service was slow. We were sat in a busy crowded area and then they prepared a fish table side at the table next to us and forst every passerby to bump my chair. I had the seafood stew and it tasted funny. You would expect it to be acidic or salty, instead it tasted bland and smelled faintly of feet. The view was nice but would have been better if we were windowside as we had requested."

  • "Right on the beach! Great lunch, moderate prices, & good service."

  • "We were seated in the best spot next to a window open to the ocean view. The food was surprisingly exceptional. The only problem was the pulsating, techno beat music throughout the restaurant. For me, fine dining and bar scene music do not belong together but I assume the management is trying for a hip scene. Again, the food was outstanding."

  • "The Sunset Grill in Malibu has a gorgeous view. The food is very good, but our waiter was not very friendly. I can live with a mediocre waiter, even if I shouldn't have to, but what I really didn't like was the horrific smell in the bathroom of dirty water or sewage. That is not a smell you want to come across in a nice restaurant."

  • "This place has a great view. Nothing like having dinner and then just walking out on to the beach. The flat bread starter was very good. Would order it again. The cauliflower curry soup was good. Might order it again. The fish tacos were so so. Something just didn't come together right in them. Wouldn't order them again. Carrot cake for desert was good, but no cravings to order it again. At the end of the day, this place is nice, you can have a decent meal and enjoy the view. But, this was not a place that had us eagerly waiting to go again."

  • "Tucked away from the busy comings and goings on PCH, this spot is perfect for a beachside dinner or lunch. Food is very well done, with beautiful presentation as well as tasty. I like to choose this spot for out of town guests and it has never let me down."

  • "Never would have known about this place if I hadn't searched on Open Table (because I don't hang out at Zuma Beach). Nice, casual atmosphere. We ordered a shrimp cocktail - shrimp were large, plump and the cocktail sauce made your eyes water from the horseradish. I thought it was great! My husband got a large calamari appetizer but they were a bit tough. The sea diver scallops entree was good - 3 large, perfectly cooked scallops on risotto in lobster sauce. The risotto was good but I didn't taste lobster. My husband ordered the fresh fish special - that unfortunately was poorly filleted and he got a bone in every mouth full. Server was apologetic. Although the experience wasn't perfect, I'd like to give it another try."

  • "Service was really friendly but not professional, we asked the waiter to have time between the starter and main, the starters came and straight after the fish!!! I had to ask the busboy to remove our plates!!! we ordered the Dorade fish (whole) waiter came to deliver, put down the plate and walked away, our fish was waiting to be prepared for our plate, was getting cold!! Then somebody came up to us and trying to fillet our fish, he really had NO idea what he was doing and left pieces of bones in, it was a shame because the taste was good but eating with the bones makes it not enjoy your food. Then she came with the bill and left us sitting with the finished plates, again I had to ask to remove the dirty plates..."

  • "The Sunset is in a great location, right on the beach. We went for dinner with friends and kids, and loved that we could walk on the beach right after dinner. The food is good, but nothing spectacular, and a little pricy for what it is. Desserts were also good, but pedestrian. Our server was aloof, but not rude. No one took a drink order before our food order, and the waiter seemed a little surprised when we started ordering drinks with our food. It was also pretty noisy the night we were there. All that being said, I would try it again."

  • "I made a reservation and arrived 45 minutes early - I let the hostess know in case something opened up, but was in no hurry. At 30 minutes PAST my reservation time the hostess informed me that I was fifth on the list. We were not seated until almost an hour after our reservation time. Drinks were great, but difficult to get. They could really use a separate bar to make cocktails for the tables. I would not go back."

  • "A solid restaurant with a relaxed beach vibe that will suit all those who keep with the relaxed atmosphere. If you want to find problems you can but this is not uptown frou-frou even though the menu may imply the idea. All the food was well made, and the portions are generous. The grilled octopus appetizer we ordered was double the amount I have received elsewhere. The cocktails were well made and fresh tasting. Great for a relaxing weekend but I probably wouldn't bring my children here after lunch or brunch."

  • "We discovered The Sunset by accident, after finding our usual "go to" in Malibu booked for Father's Day. Let me tell you - this is our new "go to" spot. Amazing food for the price, great service - even my 2 yr old enjoyed herself. The waiters were all very attentive, and we could not have asked for a better brunch spot to celebrate both my husband and my dad."

  • "The Sunset restaurant used to be one of my favorites, even with a 30 miles drive from LA it was worth it. But it seams they changed the chef. The food menu is static since a while. So we tried the Chilean Halibut with peas and pepper sauce for +/- $30; the fish - thin cut and super dry, the sauce was good and the pea puree... well it was pea puree, nothing special. It's the first time I went back to this restaurant after I had a bad experience on new years day which I wrote down in a email to the owner (email address from the homepage) but I never got any responds. So I took a break and went back this week after 6 month, Unfortunately not very convincing either."

  • "As the name suggests, this restaurant features an amazing beach-front view of the sun setting. The food is excellent. This time, our service was very slow, but when our server did come to the table, he was attentive. Our food was very good. This visit there were more families with children than in the past. Still a lovely experience."

  • "I have eaten at different restaurants which had food priced similar to "The Sunset". The food was good, but not for the price. I think you mainly pay for the view of the ocean. We went for our anniversary. It's more of a regular date night instead if a special occasion. Service was good and view was beautiful. If the food was better it would have been perfect. "

  • "We had tried to reserve another restaurant but could not so we chose the Sunset and so glad we did. The reception was friendly and we were seated immediately. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. Everything tasted wonderful and the location was perfect. We all had a great time!"

  • "Food was on the salty side. and the place was really too noisy, crowded, and not what I had in mind from looking at restaurant photos on the internet. Great place for happy hours."

  • "This was out of character, but the service was slow with no explanation. Disappointing, but it did not destroy the overall enjoyment that we have."

  • "We made a day before reservation thru open table and I had asked for a view table, not really expecting to get one-but alas we had a front row seat to the Pacific. The service was friendly and helpful and the food was surprisingly delicious! I say surprisingly as most places on the ocean tend to be average thinking the view will keep you coming back, but the Sunset had the whole package! And we will be back!"

  • "We are regulars at The Sunset and drive there from Century City. We are never disappointed with the extraordinary cuisine, service and view. The restaurant is an absolute gem and we tell the world about it as often as we can. Splendiferous!!"
