Diner Reviews
  • "The downstairs bar is always full to,the brim at sunset. The upstairs restaurant is more formal and quieter. The food is not outstanding but is good enough if you are seeking romantic beach dining."

  • "The restaurant is very nice. We arrived on time and within 5 minutes were seated quickly. Since it was my father's 90th birthday I had made my reservation and stated that we wanted to sit upstairs were it was a view and it was quiet. We had a fabulous waitress Mia who seemed to fawn over my dad."

  • "Well named the sunset was amazing as was the food. A good mix of clientele dressed up or just from the beach, but it doesn't matter because the food and view is what makes this place."

  • "Celebrated my marriage anniversary here and the place was great. Upon arrival, we were surprised by how loud and live the place was due to the crowd there for the bar/lounge area; and there was also a wedding reception taking place. We waited for a few minutes and was seated upstairs where the noise was not so bad. Had a great friendly waiter, and the food was great. Tried the halibut, and my wife had the clam linguine; ended with the flour-less chocolate cake. All was tasty and worth the money. Would definitely go back."

  • "Our overall experience at The Sunset was excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive, the food delicious and well presented. We enjoyed the watercress and heart of palm salad, followed by mussels in a wonderful white wine broth. Shall definitely try the grilled octopus when we next visit."

  • "We had a great experience celebrating our dad's birthday here. Had a great lunch with a beautiful view. The food was good and the the staff members were nice. Will definitely go there again."

  • "The restaurant has a very cool atmosphere and must be great during the day and at sunset. The food and drinks were good, the service was fine however as a new customer we felt somewhat unwelcome by the manager as he seemed to great all customers he knew and did not once say hello to make sure with us that we too were having a good experience."

  • "We been waiting for our salad for 40min , server never check in our table. I will never go back to this place. Valet Parker guy was very friendly and nice"

  • "I keep coming back to this great beach restaurant. A great view, good food and service. Perfect for all occasions."

  • "The restaurant is more casual than the pictures I saw suggest. Some diners came in from the beach in their beach clothes. But despite the casual atmosphere, the restaurant has a fine dining feel to it. We really enjoyed sitting right next to the open window where we could watch the beach scene. The $5 valet parking charge was well worth it as the beach was crowded. There were not white table cloths, but there were cloth napkins. The service was excellent. The food was delicious, especially the salmon and gelato dessert."

  • "We absolutely LOVED this restaurant! We had a reservation and were sat at a table on the second floor right by the window with a breathtaking view of the beach and the perfect cool ocean breeze. The food was very delicious, staff was extremely kind and overall was extremely relaxing! The menu had plant of delicious options to choose from so I highly recommend this restaurant"

  • "Only compliant this time was that the service was not at all attentive. We must have waited at least 30 minutes at the end of our meal to get service to order coffee."
    Dined on 7/27/2014
  • "Brunch very good, Order everything that you want, including salt, pepper, hot sauce , and butter when you order since they are so busy and have delays on the staples. Very kind to try... I had crab benedict and it was very good. Could have had more tarragon lobster sauce. My husband had bacon and eggs. He likes the salt/pepper and butter on toast. No staples were offered and it took a while to get. The staff is very eager to get the order correct. Valet was rude when I wanted to keep my key. There was no reason since I parked my car myself. They then said okay. Was really not necessary."

  • "Very comfortable setting. Great food, good wine list, and energetic lounge after dinner. I would recommend and dine there again. Reservation worked perfect with the requested window table available."

  • "Really good food and service, but the location is a challenge, on a two lane road into the beach parking lot, which was full when we turned off PCH and made us late for reservation. Thank goodness for valet parking! Granted, our reservation was for 1:00pm on a Saturday in July, but it will make be think twice, depending on time of year and time of day."

  • "Food is good, but the place is about the view. Grilled octopus was good. Fish Tacos are good. Sides are just OK. Staff friendly."

  • "Definitely the "in spot" for happy hour which goes on until 8 PM. Can't beat $5 drinks and appetizers in the bar. The same items are $10-15 in the diningroom. In the main diningroom, food portions are huge. We shared a salad, a fabulous ahi tartar appetizer, and an a scallops entree. We took home half of the scallops entree as the huge salad and appetizer were so filling. The view from the restaurant of the sunset over the ocean was great and romantic. We will return soon."

  • "Very attentive service from the waiter and the bus boy, the wine selection was great and even had some nicer ones at a fair price. The food was excellent as always, with plenty of info from the waiter on the current specials and his personal favorites. Plus the staff in general paid great attention to the fact that it was my girlfriend's birthday and greeted her kindly. Very comfortable setting and the perfect view, this is why I keep coming back."

  • "Food was good as always but it's soo disappointing to continue to have poor service. Our waiter (wanted to communicate in French) was nice enough but he had his hands full. Waited 10 min to open a bottle of wine. Bus boys were not allowed. Add some staff, please."

  • "Not what I was expecting. From the web site photos was expecting something different."

  • "Wonderful views of the ocean! Food was great! Service was okay. We were upstairs and I think they were understaffed for a Sunday afternoon."

  • "Great view of the sunset - we did a large birthday party there with 16 people. We kept changing the number of expected people and our guests had numerous "weird" requests throughout the dinner -- nevertheless the staff handled all of this graciously and professionally. The food was good, people were happy and the evening was a success. We were seated upstairs, which was great. Had we been downstairs, I suspect we would have found it to be too loud for a dinner conversation, but as it turned out the seating was great."

  • "There you are, right across the street from the Pacific Ocean! How many places offer that? This is a great restaurant to enjoy with friends and have a good time. The staff is friendly and accommodating. This is my birthday month so I am going again next week with another group of friends and we will probably spend the entire afternoon there...watching dolphins, drinking and having fun!"
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "We had a fantastic meal here. Our waitress was so nice, and they gave us the best table for my birthday - on the top floor where we watched the sunset over the blue Pacific with cool breezes. The food was delicious and affordable and the location makes you feel you are at an island resort. We parked at Point Dume and hiked to see the sea lions, then swam at the beach. We enjoyed walking back from dinner, watching the sun go down. It was the most memorable birthday."

  • "The noise level is very high, food is OK, service is OK, view of the beach is good if you can get a table by the window (reservations don't insure window seating). Clam chowder was good both times we went this last week. Wish I had just ordered the chowder and saved the $60 on the entrees. The rest of the meal reminded me too much of cruise ship fare. Wine list was good. Overall it's a great place to go after a stroll on the beach if you are looking for an energetic loud scene but not a winner if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet meal to watch the sunset. Supposedly upstairs is quieter but open only on the weekends."

  • "Good food, unique location. Get a window seat if you don't mind a breeze through an open window while you watch the sun set."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "Although the food was very good, and the staff very nice, the food service was just OK. We had to ask more than once for drinks and food items that were ordered. We were a party of five, and there was quite a time lag between when the first and last person's entrées were served."

  • "Food is great. VIEW IS AMAZING! Just fun to act like a local and eat great food. Can't say enough about it!"

  • "We went for a birthday brunch. Were lucky to get a window table, with windows open to feel like you are on the beach which is actually 50ft way. The food was excellent. We were not a sea food foody but if you are, all fresh sea food bar. The service was also a surprise extremely prompt and fun. This is our new favorite place. This is a small restaurant so I do recommend reservation. Reserve on line. Enjoy!!!!!"

  • "Well, this location is unbelievable -- literally on the sand with a killer view, and a cooperative pod of dolphins that frequent the area. Service was slow and the food was fine, but the ambience made up for it. You don't come here for the food -- you come to get a slice of the Bu that you can't get anywhere else."

  • " So loud that I couldn't have a conversation. Bread was overly done and hard as a rock. Service was slow. We were sat in a busy crowded area and then they prepared a fish table side at the table next to us and forst every passerby to bump my chair. I had the seafood stew and it tasted funny. You would expect it to be acidic or salty, instead it tasted bland and smelled faintly of feet. The view was nice but would have been better if we were windowside as we had requested."

  • "Right on the beach! Great lunch, moderate prices, & good service."

  • "We were seated in the best spot next to a window open to the ocean view. The food was surprisingly exceptional. The only problem was the pulsating, techno beat music throughout the restaurant. For me, fine dining and bar scene music do not belong together but I assume the management is trying for a hip scene. Again, the food was outstanding."

  • "The Sunset Grill in Malibu has a gorgeous view. The food is very good, but our waiter was not very friendly. I can live with a mediocre waiter, even if I shouldn't have to, but what I really didn't like was the horrific smell in the bathroom of dirty water or sewage. That is not a smell you want to come across in a nice restaurant."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "This place has a great view. Nothing like having dinner and then just walking out on to the beach. The flat bread starter was very good. Would order it again. The cauliflower curry soup was good. Might order it again. The fish tacos were so so. Something just didn't come together right in them. Wouldn't order them again. Carrot cake for desert was good, but no cravings to order it again. At the end of the day, this place is nice, you can have a decent meal and enjoy the view. But, this was not a place that had us eagerly waiting to go again."

  • "Tucked away from the busy comings and goings on PCH, this spot is perfect for a beachside dinner or lunch. Food is very well done, with beautiful presentation as well as tasty. I like to choose this spot for out of town guests and it has never let me down."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "The service was amazing. Our server was friendly and attentive! Food was amazing and fresh!"

  • "Never would have known about this place if I hadn't searched on Open Table (because I don't hang out at Zuma Beach). Nice, casual atmosphere. We ordered a shrimp cocktail - shrimp were large, plump and the cocktail sauce made your eyes water from the horseradish. I thought it was great! My husband got a large calamari appetizer but they were a bit tough. The sea diver scallops entree was good - 3 large, perfectly cooked scallops on risotto in lobster sauce. The risotto was good but I didn't taste lobster. My husband ordered the fresh fish special - that unfortunately was poorly filleted and he got a bone in every mouth full. Server was apologetic. Although the experience wasn't perfect, I'd like to give it another try."

  • "Service was really friendly but not professional, we asked the waiter to have time between the starter and main, the starters came and straight after the fish!!! I had to ask the busboy to remove our plates!!! we ordered the Dorade fish (whole) waiter came to deliver, put down the plate and walked away, our fish was waiting to be prepared for our plate, was getting cold!! Then somebody came up to us and trying to fillet our fish, he really had NO idea what he was doing and left pieces of bones in, it was a shame because the taste was good but eating with the bones makes it not enjoy your food. Then she came with the bill and left us sitting with the finished plates, again I had to ask to remove the dirty plates..."
