  • "We are from NY and my daughter wanted to have Easter brunch in Malibu…most of the other restaurants hiked up their prices and changed their menu for Easter but not Sunset…thank you for making this an Easter our family will always remember. We played on the beach after; east coast beaches do not have the dramatic cliffs and mountains like the west coast so it was a treat for us! Thanks Sunset can't wait to return!"

  • "It was a nice location for a sunset but the food was just OK. We had reservation and were seated within 5 mins. which was great for a Saturday night. It seem more of a brunch type of place or late lunch after a day at the beach. "

  • "The early evening breezes, the cozy bar scene and the friendly wait staff made the experience of dining here so enjoyable. The food was prepared and presented so beautifully. The langostino entrée was delicious and was the filet mignon. The service was attentive. We had a table upstairs which gives you a fantastic view and it's almost like a private room, but if you like being amongst the crowd, you might want to make sure you have a table downstairs."

  • "Our meal at The Sunset was memorable. My friend had sea bream boned at table side by our very efficient and artistic waiter. The restaurant is pretty loud--not a romantic get-away--and crowded. But you won't find better food [or view!] anywhere in Malibu. Kathleen Bonann Marshall "

  • "First time for dinner at the Sunset although was aware of it for years. We live 30 miles N and our friends live 30 miles S and we were looking for a good place to meet. The Sunset turned out to be perfect! It was casual, friendly and the view at our table was just great and the window fully opens to let in a wonderful ocean breeze. The food was very good and unpretentious which was right for the atmosphere. I had the Spaghetti Bolognese my friend the fish tacos my wife shared the Filet Mignon with her friend and said it was delicious. We plan to return often."

  • "Great evening and fab table to watch the sunset. Bar a little slow in serving but there was a wedding going on so probably why. Would go again, love the casual non pretentious scene"

  • "This is about our fifth visit to The Sunset. We drive all the way from Redondo Beach, so you know we love The Sunset. The bar is tiny but always interesting and the Sunday night we were there it was rockin'. It's gotten busier since we first started going there, so word must be getting around."

  • "On weekdays, Sunset is a great place to drop in for a good quiet dinner. Menu stays about the same so our reliable favorites are always available and consistently delicious. They are: scallop risotto, saffron prawn fettucini and Jadori chicken. Hamburgers are also good if you want something casual. And the quartinos of wine are well priced."

  • "The location is great right at the Ocean but food is pedestrian."

  • "The restuarant is very nice, and the food was good, BUT I asked for decaf coffee and it was the most horrific thing I have ever tasted. The odd thing was when the waiter asked me if I liked it, I told him NO, yet he did not remove it from our bill, let alone offer to do so. I really went very excited about this restaurant, but if you cannot make a good cup of coffee, then I just have to question your abilities."

  • "I chose this restaurant to celebrate my dads' 75th birthday. The weather was beautiful in Malibu on this particular day, which resulted in extreme traffic and we were 2 hours late. Take this into account if you choose this restaurant. Traffic was seriously stop and go. No fault of the Sunset but it was a hard drive. I chose this restaurant because of the beautiful photos shown on the website - it looks NOTHING like the photos and I was disappointed. For me, the photos gave a feeling of a quiet dining experience and it was pretty loud in the restaurant. The service was pretty good and the food was just okay. Not bad but nothing memorable and I had the salmon which our server raved about repeatedly. I have honestly had better."

  • "Having dined at The Sunset before, we noted the change in pace and service. The main floor was so loud (at 6 pm) and crowded with post-beach "kids" that we reiterated our (Open Table) request to be seated upstairs. This wasn't acknowledged and we were seated away but at a quiet table upstairs. Upon seeing bread served to an adjacent table - seated after we were - we had to request bread. It was an hour before our entrée was served and only one waiter/busboy seemed to understand the protocol of "service". Both the ladies room and the men's room were messy, dirty and the floors covered with water. I doubt, although it is within walking distance of our home on Pt Dume, that we will return soon...maybe in the fall when the crowds return home!"

  • "We had lunch there. The food was great. The ocean view was awesome! Booked with open table and requested window seat and got exactly we wanted. Without reservation required an hour wait, we were so glad to have made the reservation via Open Table. There was no wait time at all. Thank you Open Table!!!"

  • "Stunning location, beautiful interior and fantastic food! Especially the calamari, the flatbread, and the fish tacos. Delicious! I also love how you can order a glass of wine or a quartino for a little bit more. Great place! Will be back again soon!"

  • "The location is the only good part. Valet is $4.50. Beach and the sand are across a small two lane road. Ocean views from the tables are great. The service is terrible. We arrived 15 mins early for our reservation and were seated immediately (Sat. 12pm, the day after V-Day). We then waited 15 mins for our waiter to acknowledge us, let alone take a drink order. We had the ultimate breakfast sandwich and the mushroom omelet. The food was a 2 out of 5. Every table in the restaurant received terrible service. All the patrons were talking to each other openly about how bad it was. Since the waiter was no where to be found he couldn't hear all the complaints. Skip the food and get an overpriced drink @ the couches near the front door."

  • "Relaxing way to sit and eat by the beach. This restaurant is steps from the sand without the chaos of other beach front restaurants"

  • "We arrived at the Sunset ready to have a really nice lunch but the staff at the restaurant made sure that didn't happen. The Hostess looked at us as if we were interrupting her day. The waiter gave us no service at all. I ordered wine and got that after my appertiser. The mains arrived and not once did anyone come to see if we were happy with the food, I had to chase down the waiter for pepper. We were going to have dessert but sat with dirty plates for 15 minutes, so decided not to, the only reason they got cleared was because we asked for the bill and even then the waiter didn't say a word! So it's a big NO to the Sunset, nice spot but that's not why you got to a restaurant…especially not if you're a local."

  • "The salmon was excellent - the Ahi awesome, but the salmon with bagel was a disappointment as the bagel was very hard and could not eat. Server was excellent and replaced the bagel, but same -- guess they don't know good bagels!"

  • "In the winter it is hard to get to the restaurant in time to enjoy a sunset or the ocean but the location and decor still make it a hide-away. This is a place for sea-food that does not disappoint."

  • "Surprisingly off night at the Sunset. We were seated upstairs, which was nice. A great ocean view. The menu was an all inclusive 3 course dinner. Not what we expected. We ordered drinks, and then the first 2 courses. The first course came before the drinks. I've never had this happen before. The food was very good, but I felt rushed. The waitress was not very nice at all. I've been to this restaurant several times, and have never experienced this."

  • "The service at this restaurant was so ridiculously bad, I honestly started wondering if we were on some kind of low-budget hidden-camera show. I'll spare you the details, but, suffice it to say, that even though the owner ended- up comp'ing our entire meal, I still felt ripped off. Those are three hours of my life I'll never get back. I would have much rather paid for a delicious lunch and a relaxing experience. Diner beware..."

  • "Went here to scope out the restaurant as my brother's wedding will be here in late summer. Had the crab benedict, truffle mac n' cheese & french toast/sandwich.....all amazing!! And right on the malibu coastline where we got to see dolphins & a school of whales breaching. Incredible...."

  • "Whenever we tire of our own cooking, or forget to thaw out meat for dinner, we head 15 minutes down the road to Sunset. The food and service are consistently excellent. Although I am addicted to their Jadori chicken, this time I had the fettucini and shrimp in saffron sauce and it was DIVINE! The house wine is reasonable which makes it a perfect place for locals to dine out without breaking the bank. We've also taken dinner guests there (served appetizers and cocktails at home) then driven over for entrée and dessert. Makes for an easy home clean-up and the hosts can relax and be pampered too."

  • "We've eaten here three times and will be definitely coming back. The view can't be beat and the food is good too. it was a little noisy for our party of six to hear each other when we sat at 6 PM but it did quiet down when some of the tables emptied. Everyone enjoyed their meal - black cod and cabbage was a tasty combo and we all sampled the scallops, which were cooked to perfection. Split pea soup special was smooth and flavorful and the flat bread appetizer was enjoyed by all."

  • "We went to this restaurant for dinner the other night because someone had given us a gift certificate for it. The food was quite good, but the waiter was so unfriendly and cold. He ignored us most of the meal. We had to ask twice for water. He forgot to bring my husband's soup. The waiter barely apologized and continued to ignore us for the rest of the meal. It was probably the worst service I've had in a very long time. So bad that I would think twice about returning to this restaurant even though the food was pretty good. No one needs to feel bad after dining out!"

  • "I had to go into LA for a dress fitting and decided to treat my step-mother to a sunset meal in Malibu on our way back up north. Googled restaurants and found The Sunset...reasonably priced and a diverse menu so I made reservations. We arrived early and they were able to seat us and they put us at the window so we had the BEST seat in the house for sunset to start. Server made excellent recommendations as it related to a celebratory cocktails. The arugula flatbread pizza was out of this world as was the blackened cod and the jidori chicken. Would absolutely recommend this restaurant to everyone I know...great location, great food and fantastic service!"

  • "The Atmosphere was great. The food was mouth watering. One of the most notable surprises was that the Filet Mignon was better than Ruth Chris Steak House. The seafood was outstanding as well."

  • "We went for an early sunset dinner; everything was just perfect. It so happened that there was a sunset wedding at the beach - a wonderful late afternoon/evening to watch, sit, relax and enjoy. I asked for a table at the window to watch the sunset. Food, drinks and service made our Saturday evening perfect!"

  • "Although ingredients used in the dishes we ordered were excellent quality, the taste was lacking…Clam chowder was thick and floury, the special mushroom fettucine was bland, but the Tuna Tartar was quite good, but small."

  • "After a bad experience at The Sunset on Valentine's Day, I swore we would never return. However, a friend gave us a gift certificate for Christmas so we decided to give The Sunset another shot on New Year's Day. Our reservation was for 4 PM, but we arrived at 3:30. We were told we would be seated in 10 minutes. Other parties without reservations were told 30 minutes. We were seated after 40 minutes. 10 minutes after that, the waiter finally asked what we would like to drink. We ordered drinks, appetizers, and main courses all at the same time. 40 minutes later no food had arrived and the waiter said they were out of the fried oysters. Our food began to arrive shortly after that. The waiter apologized for the slow service, but that was it."

  • "The photos on the web site look romantic and quiet, but it's actually a busy, child-friendly environment. There were great choices for seafood lovers, but don't go if you don't eat seafood; the alternative options are limited and the chicken sandwich was not good."
