A word from The Summit
WELCOME TO A UNIQUELY “EDUCATIONAL” CULINARY EXPERIENCE.

The Midwest Culinary Institute is centered upon education, training, and a passion for the “art” in the culinary and pastry arts degree programs we offer to our students. The Summit is an extension of this vision. Your entire dining experience will be performed by well-trained students under the expert direction of our professional restaurant management team. Our staff consists entirely of Cincinnati State students, most of whom are earning college credit as a part of the “co-op” workplace training program.

We hope you enjoy this “uniquely educational” culinary dining experience. Perhaps you too might learn or experience something new about the world of
great food and wine!

Diner Reviews
  • "Gorgeous fresh food, incredible tasting, the best service possible. Truly above and beyond for sense of sight, taste, and smell. The quiet was also lovely. I've only had one better dining experience in the entire city so far. A beautiful gem courtesy of the ever-surprising Cincinnati State. Keep up the great work and can't wait to see how the menu shifts with the seasons! Thanks!"

  • "Service was great! Food and atmosphere not what was expected when compared to pricing."

  • "Just because the Summit is a teaching restaurant at Cincinnati State, don't presume that the experience and food won't be top drawer. Indeed the experience is among the best our area has to offer. You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety and eclectic choice done to the highest standards. The waitstaff is friendly, knowledgeable, and omnipresent. The 3-course menu is full of treats and offerings to tempt standard and non-conventional palates. Do yourself a favor - get a table for you and your family - you won't be disappointed. A dinner at the Summit was the perfect segue from the Playhouse in the park. What a fabulous evening!"

  • "What a fabulous choice! From the first sip of The Perfect Summit Manhattan to the last bite of the delicious warm chocolate cake served en croute, the meal was one of best we have had in Cincinnati (or elsewhere). Chef Kagy and the students of The Midwest Culinary Institute do a superb job. The lobster bisque was the best any of us had ever had. The scallop was perfectly prepared and presented and was simply delicious. We enjoyed the Filet Mignon and the Seafood Bowl as entrees, every side dish, and the warm multi-grain bread served with the best infused butter ever on the side! Remember, this is an academic setting where students are learning from one of the best chefs and an excellent culinary faculty. Great food and people!"

  • "We have been going to the Summit a couple of times a year for about five years now. Overall, the food has lost some of its appeal during our last three visits. We do hold the place to high standards, but the prices justify the expectations. A few of their previous dishes were world class, most notably the sweetbread appetizer (which was one of the best dishes I have ever been served) and a pork loin dish with an amazing wine reduction sauce. This most recent visit started with a delicious rabbit based amuse bouche and then a very good salad with apples and blue cheese. Ths lobster bisque was so salty we couldn't finish it. The mixed seafood grill featured dry fish with mushy noodles. The lone scallop was great, though. I am out of space."

  • "My friends and I decided to go for a unique experience of dining at a culinary school in hopes of excellent food and a great time. We had both! We tried 3 diffenent entrees. The Salmon cooked on the plank was the best! The chicken Fricasee was delicious but could have been better presented with some green veggies as ell as the Tuna entree. The mixed green salad with dried cherries, walnuts and goat cheese ws fabulous as well as the mixed greens and pears and apple slices. The desserts left much to be desired. The bourbon flavored homemade ice cream was not good and the coconut rum icec ream was somewhat better, but not to be repeated. The food was pricey for a school. What about the advertised 3 course dinners for $33?"

  • "Our second time at the Summit was as great as the first. My wife and I went on a Friday night at 6:00 pm. Only a few other diners were present (we prefer early seatings). Greeted and seated promptly. Ordered 3 courses and a glass of wine from the menu suggested pairings. Salads were substantial, flavorful, very fresh and delicately dressed. Baked Sea Bass and Grilled Filet Mignon were prepared perfectly; each bite was full of flavor. Desserts: chocolate Pot de Creme and the chef's nightly special: chocolate cake wrapped in light phyllo dough with berry and creme. Server was attentive, knowledgable, friendly and respected our privacy. We'll be back before long."

  • "My husband and I took our son, his wife and our two daughters out for dinner. The food was delicious. The portions were just right; all the meals were beautifully presented. Everything tasted fresh. We would definitely go again!"

  • "We went to the Summit for Valentines Day. They had a special 3 course menu which was nice. The food was good, my Filet came out well done and I sent it back since I ordered a medium. It came back at the right temperature and it was good. My wife's dinner was good too, she got the tilapia. Nothing extremely remarkable about dinner though for $150 (with wine pairing, 2 glasses for the meal) I thought it would be up to the level that would blow my socks off. The ambiance was not romantic, I would not recommend this for a first date night or any special event that you want it to be romantic."

  • "I thought the food and service were both excellent. We went on Valentine's Day so it was a three course fixed menu and it did not disappoint. I have seen some complaints about walking through the school but,I didn't find it bothersome in any way. I will be recommending this to everyone I know."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful Valentine's dinner special for our 17th anniversary in the pleasantly quiet and comfortable ambience of the Summit. Our steaks were perfect."

  • "Chefs in training here put out outstanding meals that were interesting and perfectly timed. Everything cooked to perfection. Not a romantic place, as you have to walk through the school to get there, but everyone extremely professional, yet friendly. We had a great meal paired with great wine, well served and not rushed, even though there were only a few diners."

  • "Had a great dinner on a Thursday night with our group of 6. Apart from one other table and a couple at the bar, we had the entire place to ourselves. That might normally make for too subdued an ambience but it was perfect for us as we had a lot of conversation flying between us and it was nice to be able to converse at normal volume and in absolute privacy. Food was fantastic all around. Can't comment on desserts as we were full and skipped. The staff and sous chef all stopped by to chat which we enjoyed as we were keen to know about the program there. Note that this is a school so when you walk in it will feel like your coming for PTA meetings or something (you pass classrooms and squash courts on way in!) but the rest itself is good"

  • "Our server for our group was pleasant, prompt, attentive, well spoken, and able to answer all of our questions. This was a new dining place for all of us in attendance and we weren't sure what to expect. I had been told that the food was served at cost and wasn't really sure what to expect as the website had both a fixed menu of a three course meal as well as an à la carte selection. What we found however, was only an à la carte menu. This really wasn't a problem because there were a lot of choices. We were given ample time to review the menu, and to have an apéritif, before our food began coming from the kitchen. The portion sizes were very good and the food was delicious. My only negative comment is that, it was a little too expensive."

  • "The Summit is a wonderful expression of the culinary school at Cincinnati State. Although the ambience is marred by sharp lighting housed in wall sconces, the experience was excellent from every other perspective. The food rates very high on my list. The plating of my meal and that of my dining partner excelled in beauty. Each course was complete in its integrity from simple to complex flavors. The portions were quite nice, my dining partner's most surprising for the price. The prices are more than acceptable, plus they offer complimentary valet parking. The award winning manhattan was worth every drop, quite nice with the orange essence permeating the glass. I shall return!!"

  • "The food was really tasty and a very good value. The resturant is connected to the Culinary Institute and staffed largely by students I believe. They provided wonderful service and were knowledgable. The ambiance, however, could be improved upon."

  • "Went for dinner before the TSO concert and was pleasantly surprised. I wish we could have spent more time to enjoy dessert. I knew it would be a lengthy experience and made reservations for 6 with the show at 8. So unfortunately we miss the dessert but really enjoyed our dinner with both side of our family. I will be making future dinner reservations. Thank you for the great food and hospitality."

  • "My last trip to the Summit was for the Chef Select, Beef Wellington. This was an incredible meal, prepared to perfection. The service is always excellent. This is truly one of Cincinnati's finest restaurants with an excellent chef, a varied and interesting menu, and wonderful service. The special events, Wine Dinners and Culinary Theaters are great but this is also a wonderful place for a la carte dining and for corporate entertaining. Just an incredible place!!!"

  • "The Summit, restaurant for the Midwest Culinary Institute, is a largely undiscovered gem. Food is always excellent, menu imaginative, service excellent and provided by mostly UC students who are interesting and fun to talk with."

  • "Relaxed, quiet atmosphere with exceptional service. We all ordered the chef select pumpkin-themed special. From the salad to the halibut with pumpkin risotto to the pumpkin cheesecake every dish was a hit. We appreciated that we were not rushed through our meal. Definitely a gem that should be sought out."

  • "If you're looking for a fine dining experience, meaning good food and atmosphere, you've found it here. Not only were our appetites satiated, but we, a group of eight friends, were able to enjoy one another's company. We could converse and hear each other! Dining is so much more than the food and drink, though those are important, but it can be so tiring to compete with the noisy din found in so many restaurants. We'll be back!"

  • "The only issue I had was spikes in noise level. Small child being present in another party probably didn't help that. Otherwise it was excellent"

  • "Open to the public only for Thursday-thru-Saturday dinners, The Summit is easy to miss among Cincinnati's dining options, but its food and service put it in the first rank. We had fine scallops (in phyllo strands) and short ribs as entrees, and started with mushrooms-on toast and a vegetarian risotto. All were well conceived and executed, with appropriate spice and sauce levels. Service was great; our server even wrote out directions to our next stop after leaving the restaurant. The decor is comfortable but a bit institutional."

  • "The menu is limited but very good. My spouse enjoyed the grouper with a shrimp sauce, I liked the fillet mignon, we both had the crab cake appetizer and shared a cheese plate for dessert. The staff was very attentive, and the wine list was surprisingly good and the pairing was right on. A place for foodies to try. What is different about the Summit is that it is located on the Cincinnati State campus-they do have valet parking. If you can get past walking into a school and past the classrooms you are in for a treat. We found it very convenient for dinner before heading to Music Hall just a mile down the street"

  • "The Summit is part of the educational mission of the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State. You would expect it to have an interesting menu, and it does-- creative, thought not exotic (it is, after all, in Cincinnati). We liked everything we ordered. The lack of a long-time professional staff in the kitchen sometimes affects details; for example, we had to send something back because it wasn't quite cooked through. The servers were congenial, knowledgeable and professional. However, there weren't quite enough of them. We had to rush to meet a departure deadline they knew about (we had two courses in two hours). The Summit is located in a generic school building, but the dining room itself is nice enough. I plan to go again!"

  • "The rosemary bread with herb butter was very good. I got the crab cake as a starter--nicely seasoned, just a bit bready. For the main course, I went with seared scallops. They were nicely cooked, but only seared on one side and unfortunately so heavily spiced that my palate was kind of ruined for the rest of the dish. There was a delicious bed of cheese grits that I wish I could have tasted more and an altogether unnecessary moat of barbecue sauce surrounding the grits that I just tried to avoid. We shared a dessert to finish--2 scoops of house-made ice cream, which I wouldn't recommend. Overall, I thought it was a tasty meal with a few missteps. Friday is half-price wine night for select bottles!"
