A word from The Stockyards Restaurant & 1889 Saloon
Arizona's Original Steakhouse.

Step through the copper entry doors and feel the warm authentic atmosphere of this classic American Steakhouse. Once adjacent to the largest feedlot in the world, the restaurant is a living history museum that documents Arizona's cattle industry with historical photos and a Western Art collection. Established in 1947, The Stockyards has been serving the best hand-cut aged steaks and prime rib for 65 years. The menu also features wild game, seafood, poultry, pork, and a wide variety of appetizers, salads and desserts. Be sure to visit the 1889 Saloon where you will find a solid mahogany hand carved bar, crystal chandeliers, and walls adorned with original murals that were painted in the 50's. Step back in time and relax while you enjoy an Arizona landmark. Banquet space and private dining rooms are available, and The Stockyards is always an excellent choice for groups.

This was the best Restaurant Week meal I have had in 7 years. the prime rib was perfectly cooked and tasted wonderful, the fillet was also cooked perfectly and tasted great. they both came with mashed sweet potatoes that were outrageously good.

We live outside the Phoenix area approximately 100 miles north and do not have much occasion to visit The Stockyards as often as we wish we could. Every time we get the chance to dine there we do and every time it has been excellent. The food, service the total experience has been wonderful. We recommend this place to everyone that will listen.

This is the second time we have been here. We went during Arizona Restaurant week this time. The menu for Restaurant week is limited but that is because it was only $44 per person for a 3 course meal. 3 of us got the 8 oz filet and one member of our party got the salmon. The steaks were delicious and cook just the way we ordered them. The member who had the salmon said it was really good but for the money should have ordered the steak. For desert we had cheesecake and their famous Pecan Pie. I would stick with the pie.

The steak soup and chili were both made from scratch and superb. The prime rib was generous in size, tender and cooked to perfection. The Parmesan potatoes were delicious and a surprising side dish. The pecan pie was some of the best I have ever tasted. Service was friendly and prompt. The wine list was not extensive, but it covered an excellent range of varietals and regions as well a price ranges. The only downside was the disappearance of the stockyard and its replacement with an office park. It is a shame that some portion of the stockyard could not be preserved as a historical site. As far as the 4 "Cs" or Arizona, the citrus and not the cattle have largely disappeared.

  • Still Good After All These Years

Stockyards is STILL a great old steakhouse. Not much has changed since we were last there several years ago. Steak soup is excellent and the steaks are cooked perfectly to order. Nothing fancy here, but if you've got a hankering for a good, solid steak dinner at a reasonable price, Stockyards is your place. We went on Restaurant Week and Stockyards had the best deal by far. Even got to enjoy their delicious pecan pie for dessert! Bravo to stockyards for keeping it real after all these years. A note about the service, I thought it could have been a "bit" better as our waiter seemed inexperienced and timid about his job. Maybe he was new? Overall, though, he was sufficient. He just didn't do much to add to the dining experience.

We probably wouldn't have ventured into Phoenix but the Restaurant Week offer lured us....a pretty good deal, we thought for for the price fixe menu...salad, 8oz filet, potato and desert at $44.00. Salad was boring, filet was cooked perfectly but lacked luster, I used salt which I never do..standard baked loaded. The highlight was in house made pecan pie. Pretty much worth the price of admission right there. We thought the service was just ok, no major mistakes. I guess I was expecting more high end or something..like Durants or Morton's. And as it was, our bill, with Happy Hour price drinks and wine came to about $140 with tip. A good choice for those looking for some cowboy/cattle ranch flavor, but I thought it was just ok.

The food was very bland. The bread basket was good, so it started out promising, the soup decent, but the steaks had no seasoning and for filet mignon, it wasn't very tender. The mashed potatoes tasted like they weren't made with butter (or a lot of seasoning) and could have used more garlic for being garlic mash. The pecan pie was good and loaded with a lot of pecans although it was just a frozen pie shell, and the mousse was spoiled. They did replace it with their crème brulee which was okay.

After spending a glorious week in Sedona, Arizona, my daughter & I drove to Phoenix to fly home. We had done some research and were drawn to The Stockyards Restaurant because of its history and some reviews. We had a beer in the Saloon before dinner & then enjoyed a wonderful, grilled to perfection, filet mignon dinner. The service was excellent. John Wayne and Barry Goldwater had a favorite booth ... the same booth ... they dined together on some occasions. We were told that John Wayne brought the cattle from both of his ranches to these stockyards.

This is one of our favourite places for quiet, romantic date-nights. We typically eat dinner here first before seein a play at the Herberger in Phoenix. This visit was to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. We love the western decor, antiques (history items), and fine touches like the exquisite tin ceiling, dim lighting and quiet atmosphere. Wait staff was very attentive; even with the fine touches like folding your napkin when you step away from the table for a minute. They were also very friendly and cheerful and relaxed; definitely not stuffy or stuck up. Very good sized portions of food; they don't serve "elf" food. I like the uniqueness of the menu items; I specifically had the Wild West plate with elk and venison and loved it.

I took my nephew who is a Senior at ASU here to celebrate his acceptance of a great full time job upon graduation. They have a relatively large menu of Bourbons which we both enjoyed. Each steak comes with a house salad and your choice of rice pilaf or potatoes served five ways. We both enjoyed 12oz Ribeye steaks that were perfectly cooked to order (rare, me medium rare). The Mushroom Skillet and Creamed Spinach were delicious additions. Overall a great steak house experience that didn't break the budget! I will go back!

My husband had been wanting to visit The Stockyards sine he moved here in 1987. We celebrated his 52nd birthday with our 2 daughters under the age of 10. Our waiter "Bob" was friendly, well informed on the menu and interested in the dining experience of our daughters. The other wait staff was equally friendly and attentive. We had the Chateaubriand for 2. I had never had this cut of beef before and it was worth the wait. We enjoyed viewing all the historic photos in the lobby. We read the reviews before going to the Stockyards Restaurant, so we knew we were in for a treat! Our choices from the menu were the 12 oz ribeye and the Classics dinner. The "classics dinner" included their Green Goddess salad, shrimp scampi and strawberry shortcake. Outstanding!! My husband chose the ribeye with the house salad. Again, Outstanding!! We also both had a cup of the highly recommended Steak Soup. It was good, but not something that I would order again. It was like beef stew, and for the price, skip it unless you are in a mood for beef stew! Waiter was distant at first, but warmed up as the time got closer to deciding on his tip.

Wonderful food, attentive and friendly service, rich history of the restaurant displayed throughout dining area. Went to The Stockyards because part of the group wanted steak for dinner, they did not disappoint! Cooked just right and super flavorful. My husband's mom said she's always had bad luck ordering steak at other restaurants because it would come out either overcooked or too raw, but The Stockyards prepared her steak just as she requested and she couldn't praise them enough for a job well done. Our female server, her name escaped me, was pleasant and her timing was great. Everyone else was very attentive with filling water, clearing our table, asking if we're doing okay, etc. We look forward to coming back!

My son and I ate here at the end of a long day in which I helped him move to Tempe, Arizona. We had looked forward to a good meal and were not disappointed. My son had a 16 ounce NY Strip which he said was outstanding. I had the prime rib. Although the menu said it was 18 ounces, it seemed more like 16 ounces (which was ok with me since I would have ordered a 16 ounce if it had been on the menu). Quality of the prime rib was excellent. Very good service. A definite keeper the next time I'm in Phoenix.

Took my daughter here on a whim. Waitress was great-recommended the steak soup. Made of yesterday's prime rib-ask for it if not on the menu, absolutely delicious. She also suggested filet over ribeye. I prefer ribeye, but the filet, seasoned with just salt & pepper, was among top 5 steaks I've ever had-never even used my knife. Parmesan potato stack as a side completed it. From service to personal attention to food, 5 star all around.

Had it not been for the recommendation of a friend with past experience here, we would never have discovered this "neighborhood gem." We are glad she did! The service and food were all excellent. Everyone in our party had prime rib cooked perfectly to order and it was among the best we had ever had. Service was prompt and courteous and we also loved the interior decor. Many menu selections, especially those featuring shrimp, are somewhat pricey for the quantity, but others including the prime rib are well worth it for quality of the food. This is definitely not a place to which our budget would permit frequent visits, but certainly a place to which I look forward to returning for special occasions.
