Diner Reviews
  • "I had a great time there. The service is amazing and the food as well."

  • "The food was fabulous. You better like garlic. This is a unique food centerpiece/theme that they represent well in their dishes"

  • "North beach is bustling with a lot of people and Italian restaurants. What sets The Stinking Rose apart is the garlic-specific items that range from pastas to seafood to ice cream. I really enjoyed the food and went a little overboard on the calda bagna - for just two people, it's a bit too much garlic. We had the peel and eat shrimp and Dungeness crab (for one, but it could be for two with a salad/appetizer/small entrée) and took home leftovers. We were too full for ice cream, but will come back to try it."

  • "This is clearly a niche restaurant with their "more garlic than you could possibly ever want" marketing scheme. The food (I got the dungeness crab) wasn't terrible, just not anything all that notable. I've heard from friends the food used to be fantastic, but clearly this is no longer the case."

  • "I went to this place twice in 2 weeks. We love it. Great neighborhood to go out after and food is amazing. Warning: You WILL reek of garlic for days. Lots of parsley and mints."
    Dined on 7/26/2014
  • "First - it is not a neighborhood gem, but I had to mark a box to get the review submitted. We showed up on time for our reservation was told it would be 15 minutes. A half hour went by and then we were told it would be another 30 minutes. When my husband went back again they said they could seat us. They took our party of six back to a small little room in the back where there were no other people. It had to have been 100 degrees in there with no fan. When we asked to be relocated we were treated with indifference and were told "they would see what they could do" and the person just walked off. We left and will never go back there!"

  • "We love garlic...and enjoyed everything ....what else can I say"

  • "SR came highly recommended, after reserving weeks in advance we had to wait 20 min to be seated in A hot, packed in neighborhood...hot spot but the food although filled with garlic was nothing to write home about. Service was unremarkable"

  • "I made a reservation, but we were still kept waiting for over 30 minutes and it seemed like people coming in after us got seated before we did. We did have to check that we hadn't been forgotten. However after that it was a great experience. We had a lovely booth and our waiter was very attentive. Food and drink was served quickly even though it was so busy. The waiter kept our water and bread topped up. Food was delicious and I would definitely recommend this place!"

  • "The server was outstanding. We really liked the semi-private booths. The food was fantastic. We would have liked more vegetables. However, it was our first time. We will be back."

  • "If you like garlic, this is the place to be. I would highly recommend the prime rib and/or lamb. It has become a huge tourist spot but still well worth it. Because of the high traffic, service was not very attentive."
    Dined on 7/20/2014
  • "The garlic spread on the table was great. You should bottle it and sell it. The brie plate wasn't too tasty. The steam clams were fair but the shrimp was lousy and the waiter didn't ask why there were so many left on the plate. We should have paid attention to the other reviews and not dined with you."

  • "remarkable and good food, hip place, very crowded yet we got quickly to our table although we were 20 min early to our reservation. For a special dinner a great place. Maybe to the romantic one, but something positively different."

  • "Made reservation and still had to wait 20mins for a table. We were seated in a booth section which resembled a grimey gipsy wagon. Food was awful. I had the garlic ribs - dry, overcooked and cold when it reached the table. My wife had the garlic rabbit and couldn't eat more than a few mouthfuls (we love garlic and couldn't look at the stuff for days afterward)."

  • "The food was fabulous, as usual. Our waiter was great. Everything was absolutely perfect. I will eat there again and again!"

  • "Excellent food and accommodated our group of 10+ well! Our reservation was ready early and the food was delicious. Our server was proactive our the needs of our group and there were no errors in our orders. Highly recommend again!"

  • "I have wanted to visit for over 10 yrs and finally made it to San Fran.. and the Stinkin Rose. We were early for our reservation as we had over estimated our travel time via local transit and we were seated immediately. The service was immediately, friendly and we were never without or had to wait for anything. A large group were seated in our section and they were seemingly a demanding bunch but our service never waivered and neither did theirs. The prime rib was phenomenal, my pasta was delicious and of course, the garlic ice cream was everything it was supposed to be. I can't wait to go back."

  • "The food overall was good but the crab was not so good. It was really salty and the sauce was not a good match for the crab. Somewhat disappointed."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "Our waiter was extremely attentive. We didn't wait long for appetizers or entrée. When you think about service with a smile this place definitely has it."

  • "The garlic meatballs were outstanding for an appetizer and the ravioli was a delicious entree"

  • "I love this place! It is totally kitschy, but I love it anyway. The food never disappoints. The device is not fast, but it's okay. The short ribs are delicious. The bread and garlic spread are delicious. In short, the food is delicious. As long as you love garlic, that is. Go. Take a taxi though...parking blows."

  • "Came here during an international holiday for our 14th anniversary dinner. The food was fabulous! I had the 40 Clove Chicken and it was amazing. The mashed potatoes were to die for. My husband had the ribs and we both loved the sautéed garlic appetizer! It was a great romantic atmosphere-and you don't have to worry about having garlic breathe afterwards, since you both will ;) Have already recommended it to friends!"

  • "We had a visitor and on her bucket list was The Stinking Rose as she LOVES garlic! She was not disappointed, she had garlic everything, plus added the garlic sauce on the table which she said was excellent. She finished off with garlic ice cream. A bit strong for me but she gave it a ten. As we left she bought a shirt, "I Stink", she was happy!! It met her expectations!"

  • "Always love coming here for the food. And so does everyone else. Definitely for the food, though I made reservations thru Open Table, we still wound up waiting an additional 20 minutes for our table. The food is still worth waiting for, yum!"

  • "Love the crab in garlic sauce. Cream spinach is very tasty."

  • "We were seated immediately and had a very attentive waiter. The basil pesto was delicious, the rolls were fresh, and the salad and pizza were great. We couldn't get enough garlic! Even though we were full, we had to try the garlic ice cream which was very good. We will be returning!"

  • "The food was delicious. I was a bit worried that the garlic would be too overwhelming, but it was just the right amount. Get the garlic in a bath appetizer!"

  • "Overall the experience was great, amazing food and drinks. The service was slow and lacking which was the only downside of our dinner experience."

  • "I'm a tough grader but it was a fine restaurant if one is looking for something different. The menu is truly unique and they serve everything from Rabbit to Ice Cream with an overdose of garlic. Teenagers (13 and 15) loved it. Can't miss the garlic bagno they serve with crusty bread. We've been there before, we'll go again."

  • "reservations at 7:00 pm during the week. seated as soon as we arrived. hostess was very nice and friendly. not for the surprise.....this could be possibly be the best meal for the money in san Francisco, ca. some of the other restaurants are totally out of line with their pricing. we enjoyed our meal very much. would certainly return there again."

  • "Our meal was not only excellent, but so much fun! The ambience was adorable with garlic "cartoon" murals all over the walls. The food was outstanding. Loved the roasted garlic bulbs and bread that they brought to the table. Yum! The service was great and we had a great experience."

  • "This is a great place if you really really love garlic! I had the Fresh Tomatoes pasta dish and my dinner guest had the Prime Pork Chop. Overall, I thought my pasta was good, I was not expecting huge cloves of garlic and I needed to add a little salt. Perhaps I ordered too basic of a dish. However, the pork chop was delicious!"

  • "When walking to (or past) the entrance, you may judge the location as being…run down and not appealing. Step inside, and you'll find an Italian restaurant that simply cannot be topped. Yes, the walls are covered with famous photos and autographs—and the garlic cloves, wine bottles, and corks decorating the place add quite a bit to the "sensory overload" factor. But once you taste what they are cooking—you'll add this spot to your list every time you're near the Financial District. To top it off, it was my wife's birthday…and the staff topped her evening with a garlic clove hat, photo, and an Italian chocolate mousse cake that was to die for. Also had the mussels (app), and 2 entrees. Price was perfect for amount of food. Amazing experience!"

  • "We came here 10 years before and had really nice dinner. The food was great, the service was fast and thorough. This tme we find this restaurant is just like ten years before, doesn't change a bit. Amazing!"

  • "Hostess greeted and sat us immediately, the server was very friendly,we started with the Vampire’s Bite vodka, midori, amaretto, orange juice & cranberry, then we ordered the Clams with Black Linguine and the Zuppa Di Pesce (Cioppino) were delicious and fabulous, complimented with the rolls and garlic oil and parsley, the room we were in was very private which made our dining very enjoyable, we topped off the evening watching the fireworks at the Wharf."

  • "Had a wonderful visit on July 3...reception and wait staff were very accommodating and patient with our party as several arrived very late due to traffic and parking...we never felt rushed and our reserved booth was honored...and the food and drink were wonderful!"
