Diner Reviews
  • "The food was fabulous, as usual. Our waiter was great. Everything was absolutely perfect. I will eat there again and again!"

  • "The food overall was good but the crab was not so good. It was really salty and the sauce was not a good match for the crab. Somewhat disappointed."

  • "Our waiter was extremely attentive. We didn't wait long for appetizers or entrée. When you think about service with a smile this place definitely has it."

  • "The garlic meatballs were outstanding for an appetizer and the ravioli was a delicious entree"

  • "I love this place! It is totally kitschy, but I love it anyway. The food never disappoints. The device is not fast, but it's okay. The short ribs are delicious. The bread and garlic spread are delicious. In short, the food is delicious. As long as you love garlic, that is. Go. Take a taxi though...parking blows."

  • "Came here during an international holiday for our 14th anniversary dinner. The food was fabulous! I had the 40 Clove Chicken and it was amazing. The mashed potatoes were to die for. My husband had the ribs and we both loved the sautéed garlic appetizer! It was a great romantic atmosphere-and you don't have to worry about having garlic breathe afterwards, since you both will ;) Have already recommended it to friends!"

  • "We had a visitor and on her bucket list was The Stinking Rose as she LOVES garlic! She was not disappointed, she had garlic everything, plus added the garlic sauce on the table which she said was excellent. She finished off with garlic ice cream. A bit strong for me but she gave it a ten. As we left she bought a shirt, "I Stink", she was happy!! It met her expectations!"

  • "Always love coming here for the food. And so does everyone else. Definitely for the food, though I made reservations thru Open Table, we still wound up waiting an additional 20 minutes for our table. The food is still worth waiting for, yum!"

  • "We were seated immediately and had a very attentive waiter. The basil pesto was delicious, the rolls were fresh, and the salad and pizza were great. We couldn't get enough garlic! Even though we were full, we had to try the garlic ice cream which was very good. We will be returning!"

  • "The service was great especially for my 2 year old. We came in very races clothes from the Hiants game and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Would definitely return."

  • "The food was delicious. I was a bit worried that the garlic would be too overwhelming, but it was just the right amount. Get the garlic in a bath appetizer!"

  • "Overall the experience was great, amazing food and drinks. The service was slow and lacking which was the only downside of our dinner experience."

  • "I'm a tough grader but it was a fine restaurant if one is looking for something different. The menu is truly unique and they serve everything from Rabbit to Ice Cream with an overdose of garlic. Teenagers (13 and 15) loved it. Can't miss the garlic bagno they serve with crusty bread. We've been there before, we'll go again."

  • "reservations at 7:00 pm during the week. seated as soon as we arrived. hostess was very nice and friendly. not for the surprise.....this could be possibly be the best meal for the money in san Francisco, ca. some of the other restaurants are totally out of line with their pricing. we enjoyed our meal very much. would certainly return there again."

  • "... excellent taste, nicely flavoured garlic. Fast service and good wines"

  • "Our meal was not only excellent, but so much fun! The ambience was adorable with garlic "cartoon" murals all over the walls. The food was outstanding. Loved the roasted garlic bulbs and bread that they brought to the table. Yum! The service was great and we had a great experience."

  • "This is a great place if you really really love garlic! I had the Fresh Tomatoes pasta dish and my dinner guest had the Prime Pork Chop. Overall, I thought my pasta was good, I was not expecting huge cloves of garlic and I needed to add a little salt. Perhaps I ordered too basic of a dish. However, the pork chop was delicious!"

  • "When walking to (or past) the entrance, you may judge the location as being…run down and not appealing. Step inside, and you'll find an Italian restaurant that simply cannot be topped. Yes, the walls are covered with famous photos and autographs—and the garlic cloves, wine bottles, and corks decorating the place add quite a bit to the "sensory overload" factor. But once you taste what they are cooking—you'll add this spot to your list every time you're near the Financial District. To top it off, it was my wife's birthday…and the staff topped her evening with a garlic clove hat, photo, and an Italian chocolate mousse cake that was to die for. Also had the mussels (app), and 2 entrees. Price was perfect for amount of food. Amazing experience!"

  • "We came here 10 years before and had really nice dinner. The food was great, the service was fast and thorough. This tme we find this restaurant is just like ten years before, doesn't change a bit. Amazing!"

  • "Hostess greeted and sat us immediately, the server was very friendly,we started with the Vampire’s Bite vodka, midori, amaretto, orange juice & cranberry, then we ordered the Clams with Black Linguine and the Zuppa Di Pesce (Cioppino) were delicious and fabulous, complimented with the rolls and garlic oil and parsley, the room we were in was very private which made our dining very enjoyable, we topped off the evening watching the fireworks at the Wharf."

  • "Had a wonderful visit on July 3...reception and wait staff were very accommodating and patient with our party as several arrived very late due to traffic and parking...we never felt rushed and our reserved booth was honored...and the food and drink were wonderful!"

  • "Haven't been here since 1997 (when my husband and I were dating), and the food and service are still excellent. First time I had rabbit and it was delicious, not gamey at all. It was tender and melted in your mouth. But then again, the garlic was the main reason why we came back. Everything garlic was great... Definitely would come back again as we had moved out of the city."

  • "Food was good, so no complaints there other than the price. Not nearly as garlicky as some other reviewers found it,. The steak with crab was tasty and tender, my wife really enjoyed her salmon dish. The appetizer bread was clearly not out of the oven. Service was mediocre. My wife asked the waiter for recommendations and the dude just started reading the menu to her. He was also too busy talking to the other waiters to keep a close eye on our table. The place was loud and energetic, not unpleasantly loud. Not a quiet romantic spot. Overall we had a good dinner, and pleasant night, but service is mediocre and food is overpriced. Probably won't return because we can get better food and service in many other places."

  • "Simply said, the Stinking Rose is a must not miss dining experience when you're in San Francisco. Garlic lovers must go here, San Francisco lovers must go as well. The dining room with the hanging chianti bottles is as cool as it gets. Loved everything about it!"

  • "I love the Stinking Rose and have been dining there for years. You must love garlic! I tried the garlic ice cream for the first time and it was amazing. If you want to eat at the San Francisco restaurant I highly recommend that you make a reservation in advance. The line for dinner is usually out the door. The wait staff are kind, friendly, patient and knowledgable. This is a North Beach gem!"

  • "The food was marvelous but we felt rushed so the table could be turned over. The wait staff was not the best. He showed up three times: once to get drink order, once to get food order, and finally, to give us the bill. While the food was great I am not sure I would return there again. Too many great restaurants in San Francisco to deal with that kind of service."

  • "We loved it! The cabana booth was perfect for our romantic evening. A nice wine list, a great steak, and garlic -- oh the garlic! (We both had it, so it wasn't offensive for our romance:-) We'll be back!"

  • "Did not live up to the hype. food was average, service was above average."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Yummy! Very tasty garlic with a side of garlic and garlic. If you don't like garlic because it's too strong, you will not have a problem here. The roasted garlic in oil and butter appetizer is so soft and sweet, that use spirit like butter on your rolls."

  • "My friend and I reconnected and decided to eat at the Stinking Rose. We are big shellfish eaters when together so ordering the double crab and double mussels was perfect. The crab sauce and garlic butter they serve with it just makes it melt-in-your-mouth good. We got to catch-up and enjoy food that we couldn't stop eating."

  • "We were recommended this restaurant by friends and were very much looking forward to eating here. Unfortunately the food was mediocre at best (we had the meatloaf and pork chop), service was lacklustre, and ambience was lacking (unless you like dark booths where your eyes strain to see, next to the restrooms). General cleanliness was poor, both sets of cutlery and water glasses had leftover food stuck to them. We may have caught an off night but will not be visiting again."

  • "This was our second time to visit this restaraunt. Our server was wonderful-so friendly and helpful since we were tourists. The bread was delicious. Our entrees were better the first time we visited a couple of years ago, but they were still good. If you like garlic, you should definitely try the Stinkin Rose."

  • "The restaurant was not very busy when we were there (5:30 on a Thursday). The hostess who seated us was crabby and rude, we were ignored by the other service staff until we were forced to ask if anyone was even working our area (more than a 10 minute wait). When we did receive our food it was acceptable but not memorable. I would not recommend this to anyone other than to someone who likes a gimmick type of establishment. There are just to many other good places that will combine cheerful, attentive service with good food."

  • "Being in the restaurant business for many years I really admire and appreciate independent restaurants with independent ideas and menu items. The whole experience was memorable and enjoyable. The menu reflects the decor, being that both are different and unexpected as a first time customer. The booth seating was comfortable, the service was prompt and friendly, the food was deliscious, and the prices were reasonable. My wife had the pork chop on recommendation from a local and I chose the rabbit. The meals were up to our expectations and made this a great dining out experience while visiting San Francisco."

  • "I feel it was hyped up... The food was ok at best and the service was terrible. Our waiter was incredibly rude. They knew we were celebrating a special occasion as it was written in the reservation and they stuck us with a grumpy server who came by twice all night."

  • "I went here because out of towners wanted to eat here. I ordered the lamb shank and it was awesome. The kids ordered ciappino and pizza but didn't eat it. I had been here 15 years ago, prices seemed double...can find a better meal for the price."
