Diner Reviews
  • "This is a great place if you really really love garlic! I had the Fresh Tomatoes pasta dish and my dinner guest had the Prime Pork Chop. Overall, I thought my pasta was good, I was not expecting huge cloves of garlic and I needed to add a little salt. Perhaps I ordered too basic of a dish. However, the pork chop was delicious!"

  • "... excellent taste, nicely flavoured garlic. Fast service and good wines"

  • "When walking to (or past) the entrance, you may judge the location as being…run down and not appealing. Step inside, and you'll find an Italian restaurant that simply cannot be topped. Yes, the walls are covered with famous photos and autographs—and the garlic cloves, wine bottles, and corks decorating the place add quite a bit to the "sensory overload" factor. But once you taste what they are cooking—you'll add this spot to your list every time you're near the Financial District. To top it off, it was my wife's birthday…and the staff topped her evening with a garlic clove hat, photo, and an Italian chocolate mousse cake that was to die for. Also had the mussels (app), and 2 entrees. Price was perfect for amount of food. Amazing experience!"

  • "I love the Stinking Rose and have been dining there for years. You must love garlic! I tried the garlic ice cream for the first time and it was amazing. If you want to eat at the San Francisco restaurant I highly recommend that you make a reservation in advance. The line for dinner is usually out the door. The wait staff are kind, friendly, patient and knowledgable. This is a North Beach gem!"

  • "Had a wonderful visit on July 3...reception and wait staff were very accommodating and patient with our party as several arrived very late due to traffic and parking...we never felt rushed and our reserved booth was honored...and the food and drink were wonderful!"

  • "Haven't been here since 1997 (when my husband and I were dating), and the food and service are still excellent. First time I had rabbit and it was delicious, not gamey at all. It was tender and melted in your mouth. But then again, the garlic was the main reason why we came back. Everything garlic was great... Definitely would come back again as we had moved out of the city."

  • "We were recommended this restaurant by friends and were very much looking forward to eating here. Unfortunately the food was mediocre at best (we had the meatloaf and pork chop), service was lacklustre, and ambience was lacking (unless you like dark booths where your eyes strain to see, next to the restrooms). General cleanliness was poor, both sets of cutlery and water glasses had leftover food stuck to them. We may have caught an off night but will not be visiting again."

  • "Food was good, so no complaints there other than the price. Not nearly as garlicky as some other reviewers found it,. The steak with crab was tasty and tender, my wife really enjoyed her salmon dish. The appetizer bread was clearly not out of the oven. Service was mediocre. My wife asked the waiter for recommendations and the dude just started reading the menu to her. He was also too busy talking to the other waiters to keep a close eye on our table. The place was loud and energetic, not unpleasantly loud. Not a quiet romantic spot. Overall we had a good dinner, and pleasant night, but service is mediocre and food is overpriced. Probably won't return because we can get better food and service in many other places."

  • "The restaurant was not very busy when we were there (5:30 on a Thursday). The hostess who seated us was crabby and rude, we were ignored by the other service staff until we were forced to ask if anyone was even working our area (more than a 10 minute wait). When we did receive our food it was acceptable but not memorable. I would not recommend this to anyone other than to someone who likes a gimmick type of establishment. There are just to many other good places that will combine cheerful, attentive service with good food."

  • "Simply said, the Stinking Rose is a must not miss dining experience when you're in San Francisco. Garlic lovers must go here, San Francisco lovers must go as well. The dining room with the hanging chianti bottles is as cool as it gets. Loved everything about it!"

  • "I went here because out of towners wanted to eat here. I ordered the lamb shank and it was awesome. The kids ordered ciappino and pizza but didn't eat it. I had been here 15 years ago, prices seemed double...can find a better meal for the price."

  • "We loved it! The cabana booth was perfect for our romantic evening. A nice wine list, a great steak, and garlic -- oh the garlic! (We both had it, so it wasn't offensive for our romance:-) We'll be back!"

  • "Did not live up to the hype. food was average, service was above average."

  • "The food was marvelous but we felt rushed so the table could be turned over. The wait staff was not the best. He showed up three times: once to get drink order, once to get food order, and finally, to give us the bill. While the food was great I am not sure I would return there again. Too many great restaurants in San Francisco to deal with that kind of service."

  • "Sister restaurant to 'The Dead Fish' (which is also good) - If you're not a garlic lover, then you should avoid this restaurant. True, the name doesn't exactly say "Garlic Overload", but you'll certainly know once you walk in the front door. In fact, the menu says something like "we like to flavor our garlic with food". The tapanade that sits on every table is really delicious but will leave you reeking of garlic for days. Had we not overloaded on that we would have ordered the 'Bagna Calda' (garlic, butter, olive oil baked in a skillet). Diners in our party ordered the 40-clove garlic chicken, the garlic prime rib, lasagna and the sea bass with garlic butter. Food was served quickly, piping hot and very tasty. Too stuffed for dessert."

  • "This was our second time to visit this restaraunt. Our server was wonderful-so friendly and helpful since we were tourists. The bread was delicious. Our entrees were better the first time we visited a couple of years ago, but they were still good. If you like garlic, you should definitely try the Stinkin Rose."

  • "Yummy! Very tasty garlic with a side of garlic and garlic. If you don't like garlic because it's too strong, you will not have a problem here. The roasted garlic in oil and butter appetizer is so soft and sweet, that use spirit like butter on your rolls."

  • "My friend and I reconnected and decided to eat at the Stinking Rose. We are big shellfish eaters when together so ordering the double crab and double mussels was perfect. The crab sauce and garlic butter they serve with it just makes it melt-in-your-mouth good. We got to catch-up and enjoy food that we couldn't stop eating."

  • "Being in the restaurant business for many years I really admire and appreciate independent restaurants with independent ideas and menu items. The whole experience was memorable and enjoyable. The menu reflects the decor, being that both are different and unexpected as a first time customer. The booth seating was comfortable, the service was prompt and friendly, the food was deliscious, and the prices were reasonable. My wife had the pork chop on recommendation from a local and I chose the rabbit. The meals were up to our expectations and made this a great dining out experience while visiting San Francisco."

  • "I feel it was hyped up... The food was ok at best and the service was terrible. Our waiter was incredibly rude. They knew we were celebrating a special occasion as it was written in the reservation and they stuck us with a grumpy server who came by twice all night."

  • "The steak was amazing. Cooked medium rare to perfection with a side of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. The meat was very tender and was a huge portion for a 10 oz. The garlic ice cream was also quite delicious. We went for someone's birthday and they provided us with a free slice of cake also. The smell of garlic is not overpowering and the decorations of hundreds of feet of garlic are charming. I really enjoyed this place and will come here again soon."

  • "My 4th time there. I usually go when I am in SF. Love the tureen of clams. When you are done eating the clams the broth that is left is like drinking soup. Very tasty and like having 2 courses in one. If you are looking for a quiet place to dine this is not it but if you are looking for something different this is the place to stop. The apps are the best things on the menu. The entees are good but after I finish the I usually cant finish my main course. Stick with the fish since it is lighter and the sauces are very good. The prime rib is ok but if you are looking for that there are better choices in SF. As for dessert the garlic ice cream is something to try once. Order one for the whole table to taste. Better choices just down the street"

  • "I get the feeling that this place, however quaint, has somewhat given in to the tourist demands for a quick table and quick service. The food was ok, but certainly not memorable outside of the initial draw of garlic mecca. There are plenty of more authentic, and frankly, better tasting Italian joints in the neighborhood."

  • "Waited for over 45 minutes after our reserved time. The restaurant placed very little effort to secure a table for our larger party by our reservation time even though they were given several days notice our reservation. Staff was kind but unapologetic about the extremely long wait."

  • "We had a group of 10, many out -of- towners, so we thought this would be a good restaurant to show- off the North Beach area. We were seated upstairs, so we were off the main floor and away from the hub of the restaurant, but we still had good service and had a great meal. The dip on the table is so delicious and of course garlicky. Several people ordered the 40 clove chicken and it was delicious, some ordered pasta, fish, and everyone enjoyed their meal. We would definitely go back, just plan on garlic breath."

  • "If you cannot get enough garlic, this is the restaurant for you. Gets busy quickly so unless you want to wait in a long line, go early."
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "Food wasn't that good. Their bread was excellent but the black pasta and clams was bland except for the extraordinary amount of salt. It's one of those places we can say we ate at and move on. Also, the bottles hanging from the ceiling made the place seem smaller than it was. Reminded me of the seventies when having a Mateus Rose bottle with a candle was cool. It ended up not being cool."

  • "We took our grandfather visiting from NYC to the Stinking Rose. Great novelty and charm when you walk in - perfect for new visitors to SF. Best cioppino I've ever had. Liked the bread on the side and also ordered the "garlic in a bath". Food was stellar and the service was superior. Edgar was our waiter - attentive, humorous, polite and pleasant. One of the few places we've visited where the service was equal to the food. Bravo."

  • "Or hate vampires this place is for you. Really good food and everything on the menu has garlic minus the drinks. Just make sure you don't go on a weekend as this place fills up right away. We got to sit in the warm room in the back. We call it warm because it's behind the kitchen and gets very warm. Plus the room is really small."

  • "Great italian food, and if the name didnt give it away, heavy on the garlic. Portion sizes were a little small for an italian restaraunt, but try the apps as they were all fantastic."
