Diner Reviews
  • "Seated immediately. Nice tables for large parties in the heart of the place. Noise level great for families--your kids will bother no one if they are not heard. Fun upbeat atmosphere and nice ambiance. Of course the garlic is strong in the dishes. Great shrimp and crab sizzling skillet dish. Very good food overall plus good service. Would not hesitate to recommend for couples, families or whoever ... as long as you like garlic, that day and the next:)"

  • "We had the garlic cloves boiled in olive oil to spread on bread which was fantastic. We ordered the "small" tureen of seafood Pesce soup and there was plenty for 3 people as an appetizer. For dinner I had the Silence of the Lamb Shank, with Chianti wine sauce and fava beans. Yes it comes topped with extra garlic cloves. The meat was fall of the bone tender and delicious. The waiter was pleasant but did forget our garlic appetizer which he quickly produced and comp'd us for the error. My colleague had the Salmon which was also delicious. You have to check out this neighborhood gem. The location is close to Chinatown and a 20 minute walk to Fisherman's Warf. This is a local restaurant and much better than the tourist traps at Pier 39."

  • "We visited Stinking Rose during a visit from the UK. We wanted to try their amazing menu, we were not disappointed, the 40 clove chicken was a great choice as was the rest of the menu. The waiters were very friendly and helpful during our visit. We loved the quirkiness and experience of the restaurant."

  • "Popular destination for tourist dinner. Food and service were OK. Ambience was OK. location eas good. A bit pricey, but all eateries in area were. Computer was down so nobody knew what to do at check out - took longer to get check than to order, eat, drink, and chat for dinner. Back up plan needs to be in place."

  • "Everything garlic. Lots of Seafood options. Crowded (some areas are cramped) and Energetic (Loud). Make a reservation on Thur/Fri/Sat. Would go again with the right friend(s)."

  • "The Stinking Rose is a destination for everyone in the Bay Area. After living in the East bay for 7 years I finally took the trip to the city to see why it is so popular. The amazing smells of garlic prepared many ways permeated the air... what a great way to prep me for a wonderful dining experience. From appetizer to dessert, I was not disappointed in food quality by any means!"

  • "We found an advertisement at Beach Blanket and tried it. We enjoyed our pasta dishes, the bread and garlic salsa and the house wine was enjoyable. Love the garlic braid."

  • "Went here on a recommendation from a friend. Took my wife out to dinner for our anniversary (she loves garlic) as we were in town for a few days. The restaurant is charming and offers very interesting/different/fun décor. The food was outstanding, drinks/wine options were great and the service was spot on. Will definitely return and would highly recommend to a friend."

  • "It's worth going for the experience. The service was good, the atmosphere entertaining and fun, and the food was pretty good. It's more of a novelty type of restaurant. I would go back but don't expect a gourmet meal."

  • "If you walked past this place you wouldn't think much except that the theme of garlic is very obvious. However we wanted to go after being to SF 2yrs ago. The food was incredible! What a surprise! The menu comes across quite modestly but it sure packs a punch! There were four of us dining and we had the prime rib which the lads ranked very highly, the mussels and prawns which we're delicious and my mate had the meatloaf...classic faves!! Puddings were immense...1 between 2 is very adequate! Coffees were equally fab and our server was an absolute delight; funny, courteous and generally an absolute pleasure to have serve us, he knew the food menu like the back of his hand! We don't know his name but his till code was 124Z!"

  • "I didn't know what to expect when the friend I'm traveling with suggested we try this restaurant. Garlic isn't really my thing. But there was a variety on the menu and plenty of flavor to all the dishes we tried. I recommend the shrimp in garlic as that was very good. Also, we were served promptly and our questions were answered politely when we asked about the garlic wine. The decor inside was unique and fun!"

  • "I had to check out this restaurant because of my love of garlic. While you will get your fill of garlic, the food is over-priced in comparison to other great restaurants in San Francisco. I wish we would have just stopped for an appetizer and a drink and had dinner elsewhere."

  • "...which I am! The portions were just right. All of the food had great flavor and of amazing quality. I was VERY pleased with my experience and will undoubtedly come back again."

  • "Hadn't been here in years but fondly remembered the garlic-enthusiast theme and menu. Easy to drop in on a late Saturday night spur of the moment. Opted for neon ravioli over usual silence of the lamb shank. Strong, hearty and flavorful. Companion had the braised short rib. More tender and flavorful than I expected from a garlic infused meat item. Pleasant hostess and wait staff. Value for weekend night dining in SF."

  • "This was maybe my 4th or 5th time at Stinking Rose, and a good experience. Seated in the more private back area, which is great for chatting with a date or small group. Service wasn't as friendly as usual, but certainly not bad. Food was solid, and great proportions."

  • "Great food. Loud, decorative, festive, and delicious. Parking is extremely hard because its on a busy street. You will have strong garlic breath the next day but it is worth it."

  • "My husband and I have wanted to go to The Stinking Rose for over 15 years, and we were finally rewarded the opportunity last week. The prime rib was fantastic, however the service was less than stellar. Ever go to a restaurant and feel like you're bothering the staff by being there? And so goes our dining experience in San Fran."

  • "This place is a great for those who are from out of town! Not only is the atmosphere different (where else do they have bulbs of garlic hanging from the ceiling?) but the food was delicious."

  • "Great food, great ambiance. Went with a group of friends one of whom stumbled upon this place on her last visit and said we had to come here it was the best. She was right, haven't had such a great meal in a long time. If you are in San Francisco you must go it is worth it."

  • "Good to try something different all around garlic. But i expected to see more garlic related food, not just putting garlic cloves as a side for all dishes."

  • "This affordable San Francisco icon consistently provides great service, delicious food, and a quaint atmosphere. Walking distance from the Wharf, don't pass this one up - make your reservations on Open Table!"

  • "Amazing food loaded with garlic. I have been several times. Although the quality of the service varies greatly, the food is consistently great. Be sure to get the little tub of roasted garlic!"

  • "We had a great table right by the front window. The service was good. The food was delicious. Most love garlic though or this isn't the restaurant for you"

  • "If you like to eat in cramp, noisy and overpriced restaurants, then follow your nose to this Stinking Rose. Be prepared to have your leg circulation cut off while seating is not scaled for the average adult. Guess again if you think you get complimentary bread. A large salad was meant for a child's appetite. The entrees were "meh"; I found myself adding salt to my chicken and asparagus with fettuccine dish as it was lacking in flavor. I didn't finish the fettuccine as it was cold and the portion sizes, again, are small. Being from San Diego, we have far better restaurants which serve garlic dishes that will want you coming back for more. As for me, I'm turning my nose away from this Stinking Rose and following my hunches with Yelp."

  • "Been there 2 or 3 times before, but I should have skipped this last visit. The place is showing its age, not a place you want to take someone to impress. We ordered the mixed muscle plate, was so overcooked, the shells were char-coaled. No juice left. Probably won't be back."

  • "Thank you for asking me about the Stinking Rose. Fabulous! Simply fabulous! It was my daughter's birthday and we had two kids with us. WE ATE every thing we could! But of course, our stomachs could only do so much. The garlic crab was out of this world! Don't know what else to say. GO THERE AND EAT EVERYTHING you can! We ended up with food that we ate through the week. It was good to the last bite!"

  • "I have never felt so rushed through a meal in my life. My husband and I took two out of town quest with me to this restaurant and I was disappointed. I have been there before but have never felt such bad service. The food was okay but not great (small portions). With so many choices in North Beach I think I will pass on this one in the future. The waiter had no personality! Sorry, for the bad review but this was my honest feedback about my experience."

  • "We started off with the bagna calda app. Slightly sweet and completely addictive. The waitress was very good, stopping often enough to refill glasses and ask how things were going. We ordered the gnocchiette, the pork chop, the pepperoni pizza and the silence of the lamb shank. The pork chop and lamb were huge portions. The gnocchiette had a Gorgonzola sauce but it wasn't too tangy. My son gave the individual sized pizza a thumbs up. Hubby's pork chop with apples was very good. This is the second time I ate the lamb. The meat falls off the bone. The creamed spinach is so so good. The price was a little in the high side so this probably isn't an every night thing but it's worth it for a special occasion or a date."

  • "We had a great time (group of 10) and great food at the Stinking Rose. Parking is a little hard to come by, but that is not a deterrent or should not be a deterrent when planning to dine here. The tourine (?) of clams is a must for seafood lovers. The lamb shank and prime rib are also a great choice. If you don't like garlic... not your place to eat. If you do... none better!"

  • "The title is obviously a pun! I love this place. I always get the Prime Rib, but their crab is also great. We also get the Garlic in a Tub. The look and feel of this place is awesome. Be prepared to drop some cash here, but you won't regret it!"

  • "The roasted garlic really great! Loved the shrimp and pasta dish & the ribs. Not much else was great. But it was a fun pleasant dinner with a delish theme"

  • "This place has wonderful food and great service. It is called "the Garlic Restaurant" and they are not kidding. On the menu they state "We flavor our garlic with food." It is not overpowering, but the garlic in the dishes add a wonderful touch. You can go heavy with the garlic or not. It is a MUST for anyone who likes garlic."
