Diner Reviews
  • "We haven't been there for at least 10 years. Lovely dinner, quiet atmosphere, attentive but not invasive staff."

  • "My husband and I are very much into wine and food. We travel a lot and appreciate good service. The Stained Glass Bistro is excellent all on counts--food, wine, service and ambience. This was our second time eating there. The first time we brought our daughter, a student at Northwestern, and 5 of her friends. They are too young to be served wine, but we all enjoyed the food and the service was warm and gracious. This time it was just the two of us. Our server was EXCELLENT; cannot say enough about how perfect the service was. He was knowledgable about food and wine and extremely pleasant. We both enjoyed wine flights... lots of fun to compare the three wines (or 6, in my husband's case). The menu is lovely..."

  • "We had a very tasty meal at the Stained Glass. The crab cake appetizer and butter lettuce salad were delicious. The crab cake had just right spicy poblano peppers and the vinegar dressing with the butter lettuce salad had a wonderful contrast to the carmelized walnuts. The chef was clear about what he could and could not substitute for Gluten Free eating which we really appreciated. I had an amazing dish with chick pea cakes and a lightly spiced rice with gave a layered taste of flavors. My daughter had gnochhi (that were not gluten free) and again beautifully made and delicious. They have a wonderful wine flight and wine sampling menu. My chick pea dish was paired with a gerwurztraminer that was not too sweet."

  • "hors d'oeures and a rack of wine make a wonderful dinner along with a chocolate dessert...love the delicious bread served right away with the wine!! Waiter was great."

  • "It has been several years since I have been to this restaurant. Unfortunately I was unpleasantly surprised. The prices are ridiculously expensive, which I would have expected from an upscale Evanston restaurant. However the quality of the food and beverages typically makes up for the increase in cost over a standard restaurant. In this case the quality of the food was average at best. The steak was flavorless and served with oily potatoes, and the tuna dish was so small, it could have been an appetizer. The wine list is very short and disappointing especially for a wine bar. It is a beautiful restaurant, but sadly, I will probably not be back."

  • "The menu is limited (too much seafood for my taste) but what is served is good. We were looking forward to our usual filet mignon but it was no longer on the menu. It seems that the menu has changed and hangar steak has been substituted for our favorite meat. Because of this we will probably only return if we are meeting friends, and will order hors d'ouevres instead of an entree."

  • "Went there on Sunday at 530. Maybe it was just the time of day or things not properly aligned but I only had on ok experience. The waiter was pleasant and me and my companion got wine flight and ordered the cheese before picking our entre. 30+ minutes later after the wine had been more than have gone... The cheese is nowhere to be seen. Maybe they had to find a cow and make it from scratch idk! Then I told the waiter who said he noticed that it was and would check. Keep in mind this was the first time he had been back since dropping the flights off 20 minutes ago. He came back and said that the printer had broken and they were making it. Another 10 minutes later the plate of cheese. (Don't get the cheese it isn't worth"

  • "Food was outstanding. A bit pricey but not outrageous. It could use a few pictures on the walls. Very loud if you are trying to have a quiet dinner."

  • "We each ordered wine flights. Good pours fairly priced. Dinner was excellent. We were there several years ago...surprised it took so long to get back there. Will be going back with friends soon!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal at Stained Glass. Everyone loved their food--entrees included pork, fish, chicken and one of the vegetarian options (which was fantastic, btw). Portions are generous. Food combinations are unusual, delicious and presented beautifully. Our party of food had a two rounds of drinks, 3 appetizers, entrees, one shared dessert and coffee and it came out to $150 per couple including tip."

  • "Really enjoyed this restaurant. I had the escargot starter--the best I've ever tasted. A light buttery, garlic sauce with spinach and perfectly cooked escargot. I had the barramundi for dinner, which was a very mild and juicy fish. Nicely seasoned and no bones. Came with a delicious quinoa, hearts of palm salad, and a green avocado puree. Those lent such a fresh taste to the dish. For dessert I shared the maple rum doughnuts and the trio of creme brulee. Outstanding. My friends enjoyed their entrees of tuna and of filet mignon. We will return."

  • "We were headed out for a nice Friday night dinner and I Googled Evanston restaurants. The Stained Glass was amongst numerous others, but looked like it would meet our needs and loved the menu. I was able to obtain a same day reservation. The greeting is warm and friendly. We were immediately seated upon our arrival. After our drink orders were taken, we were informed that Cellars was packed and we should probably order our appetizers and main course together. It seemed odd as we were had a 6:30 reservation, which seemed on the early side. Grateful we were for the notice as the restaurant seemed to fill up quickly. Delicious appetizers of charcuterie and the BLT came and we dove in. The lamb, filet and barramundi were all amazing."

  • "Since we moved from Evanston, we don't get to the Stained Glass as often as we used to, so hadn't been there in well over a year... it's as good or better than we remember. Great place to dine with friends. Food and drinks are excellent."

  • "Enjoyable spot for business and casual occasions. Good service, good food, good wine. Enjoyed the barramundi on this last visit. They surprised us with two complimentary desserts because they were slow in bringing a round of drinks. This was much appreciated."

  • "I think Stained Glass needs to think about having more moderate price bottles of wine. It's a wonderful price to eat for a special occasion, but most people can't afford $50-200 bottles of wine."

  • "Though it hosts Northwestern, Evanston's not really a college town. Most of what you do in Evanston is with the realization that you also have many more choices just 20 minutes south in Chicago. I love the Chicago scene, but caved to my concerns about winter weather. We visited The Stained Glass. And, we are very happy that we did. The restaurant has a wonderful menu, presenting a marvelous challenge of narrowing down our wish list (we had the artichoke-parmesan appetizer, the foie-gras, and the scallops). We could have easily had the same delightful dilemma with our entrees. though we were satisfied and settled on perusing their dessert menu. The Stained Glass is a must when you're in the area. And do the doughnuts for dessert!"

  • "Food was inventive, server was very well versed in all the items, we are wine gals and the wine list could be a bit more balanced and daring. Wine was the "usual Suspects" - Still we would highly recommend. Book early."

  • "Loved everything about this place. Food was over-the-top amazing. Had Oysters Rockafeller and Lobster Bisque (Lots of Lobster too) for Appetizers. Dinner was Butter Fish, which was prepared so well that it melted in our mouths, excellent. Lastly the Dessert was 2 homemade donuts (Rum Maple Glaze w/Bacon and Chocolate w/Chocolate bits). On the side was fresh blueberry jam! I would 100% come back, especially for the homemade donuts! Great overall exprience, a 12 out of 10!"

  • "One of the best meals I've had in the Chicago area, but not overpriced or stuffy. Nice wine selections for the tasting flights. Plenty of different food choices and everything we had was excellently prepared. Looking forward to going back."

  • "I came here with some friends to have some wine and some small plates. About 60% of the food was quite good. Salads and the artichoke appetizer (a favorite at this place) were great. But I had asked the waiter to help me choose between the octopus appetizer and the scallops. He said the baby octopus was excellent - so I went with that. When it showed up it was so overcooked that it was almost inedible. (I shouldv'e complained) How hard is it to quick sear some octopus? The polenta it was placed on was cold and congealed on top - probably sat around waiting for the octopus to be overcooked! Then we wanted to some sorbet, but that was out. The three creme brulee dessert sampler was tasty but that's the trouble here - its unreliable!"

  • "It was a well executed meal. The fish dishes were very good and the accompaniments added a nice variety of flavors and textures. And the specialty cocktail was tastey. The meal was satisfying."

  • "I have eaten at Stained Glass 3 times and have found the food has always been excellent. The wine list is plentiful and I enjoyed trying a flight of wines. However, the service was poor. The restaurant was not busy, but our server was slow to even ask for an initial drink order. The neglect continued throughout the meal, no offer for additional bread, another drink. I won't even address his laissez faire attitude. Maybe it had something to do with what appeared to be the manager casually sitting at the bar. I will go back to Stained Glass, the food is good and a gem for Evanston but with lower expectations."

  • "We are long time patrons who keep returning, as no one prepares fish and vegetables better than Victor Hernandez. His appetizers (especially the baked artichoke) and salads are equally creative and outstanding. With sons living in both NYC and SF, we dine at many Open Table restaurants. Stained Glass still remains our favorite!"

  • "We found Stained Glass restaurant with a simple Google search and read many positive reviews so we took a chance. It was on of the best meal experiences I have had in a long time without extensive travel and long lines. Sarah, our server, made the meal even more pleasant and fun. We will be back many more times in the future."
