Located in the heart of downtown Evanston since 1999, the Stained Glass bistro has earned a reputation as the perfect spot both for special occasions and a casual bite to eat. Executive Chef/Owner Victor Hernandez’s contemporary American cuisine has a touch of international influence that has earned raves from the Chicago Tribune, the Michelin Guide, and elsewhere.

  • "Although the atmosphere remains nice, specifically on the bar side, the overall quality/experience was poor. Our waiter, (tall, dark hair with the ridiculous, over enunciated radio announcer voice) who was training or in training, totally helped put the experience in the garbage for us. Plan was share apps & then each have a main. Asked waiter to course them out & not have any arrive at the same time. Summary: Lobster Bisque tasted like squash soup, not LB & they had no sherry for the side. Burrata salad was void of taste. Escargot had nice taste but was served cold WITH the Foie Gras due to lack of planning by the waiter. We left just after 9:20 when we were told "Oh, I think I screwed up, the kitchen closed at 9 tonight." Not fun!!"

Our order for drinks was very quick and once deciding on a main course, which was delicious, rack of lamb prepared to every one's satisfaction, we were served in a timely manner. The efficiency of the kitchen and our waiter made it possible for us to order coffee and desert, the desert was the sampler for four, at twenty dollars, what a bargain and delicious too. I would definitely recommend and visit again. ES"

  • "What a fabulous meal my husband and I had at Stained Glass. The choice of wine flights was fun and very festive. The soup special and the baby beet salad were delicious with great presentation. The Tuna, Tuna, Tuna was presented so beautifully that I took a picture of it (and I'm not one to do that) and equally inventive and delicious. My husband called his rack of lamb decadent. Our waiter was charming, knowledgeable and perfectly attuned to our timing and needs. The atmosphere from our perfect corner table was perfect - all to celebrate my husband's birthday. We have a tradition of surprising each other with the restaurant for each other's birthdays and he said I hit it out of the park this year."

  • "I loved Stained Glass. The food was excellent. The service was outstanding. The ambience was great. The noise level was quiet. I went there with my husband for our wedding anniversary. The restaurant was great for that occasion. It was a bit costly, but well worth it. Everything was delicious. The menu is small, but they do everything very well. They concentrate on quality versus quanitity."

A great neighborhood gathering spot in Evanston and an easy walk from campus. Even with several other fine choices for dinner downtown we were quite pleased with dinner at The Stained Glass."

  • "Lamb, pork, crab cakes-all excellent. Salmon was too rare for one of us, but the kitchen quickly fixed that. The deviled egg appetizer is wonderful but very filling! The restaurant was very quiet on a Wednesday night. We have enjoyed this restaurant for years and find the food is always great."

  • "The dining room was a little louder than I'd remembered it. The waiter was friendly but a little quirky and inefficient. I asked what region a Spanish wine was from and he vaguely repllied as he was walking away "some river." Later, when he brought the wine - even though my order was still pending - he "cleared it up" by saying "a river in the south." Stained Glass is a wine bar and prides itself on wine. The wine turned out to be very good though. The food was okay, but not in the upper echelon of restaurants even in Evanston. Three of us had "Scottish salmon," which itself was good, but it was one something like a potato platform which was nearly tasteless. Greens with it were excellent. I won't be back for another good while."

  • "Sounds terrible, but I'm a foody and we drove 2 hours from Chicago to go to this restaurant. We made a day trip out of it to visit Galena again and wanted a top restaurant. The reviews have always been so good that we made it a point to go here. Just an average menu, adequate food, way overpriced for what you get and I wouldn't waste my time. Fried Green tomatoes were very disappointing. Just nonripe breaded and fried tomatoes with marinara sauce and tons of mozzarella dumped over them. Pretty tasteless. Our server was excellent and was the best part of the evening, but I wouldn't pick a restaurant just on a good server. Also the décor was very outdated and the restaurant had a dusty, mothball type of smell."

  • "We eat out a lot and this is probably the best dinner we have had in a while. Actually can't remember being more pleased. The crazy part is that we live minutes away and this was our first visit. We chose the chicken and the pork chop with great heirloom tomato salads to start. If you have a difficult time choosing a wine just pick a flight of your choice and receive three half glasses. The Stained Glass was fabulous and we are sure to return...SOON!!"

  • "Went to Stained Glass with two out of town guests. The food was excellent and better than my memory of the last time I was there (over a year ago). We shared 2 aaps. The bacon flight was small but tasty, the special salad was solid and the deviled eggs with salmon chips, caviar and (I think) tapenade was great. I had the vegie, chickpea Pannise and it had good flavor. The other dishes, tuna-tuna-tuna, and the pork chop were also flavorful and enjoyed. The fresh donuts with blueberry compote, chocolate with nibs or maple glaze with bacon a good finish. We all had beer from the small but nice beer list, and of course, the wine list is interesting."

And the service is outstanding. They're very conscientious, should you be attending an area show or have a time constraint, and pace your meal appropriately. Besides terrific food and service, they're known for their wine selection. You can get great finds by the glass, flight, or bottle, so go thirsty!"

  • "Had a lovely dinner this past Friday with 2 other couples. They were very accomodating in giving us 3 separate checks (the "Florida" way for those of you who are considering retirement). Among us we ordered salmon, whitefish, hangar steak and the pork chop. All we're excellent as were the included sides. A couple of us had wine flights which were fun (waiter kindly gave me a generous taste of one of my wines to help in my choice). Oh yes, they also gave us a round table which we love! We 'll definitely return to this restaurant!"

  • "Impressed by the ambiance of this restaurant, quiet, quaint, upscale with a really good vibe. The food was not what I would have expected for the price. I have no problem paying high prices, if the taste of the food dances and dazzles in my mouth making me want more. This was not the case here. I had the pork chop and it was bland and dry. My wife had the Tuna, Tuna, Tuna and liked 1 of the 3, I was not impressed by either. My daughter had salmon, which she liked, I took a bite and was not impressed. My son had lamb and said it was decent, but not amazing and my other son had steak and had the same feeling. Additionally, the portions are small and our waiter was not good! I am glad I experienced Stained Glass, but I am not a big fan. "

  • "We were visiting Evanston from out of town and wanted a quick supper before a concert. We loved everything about Stained Glass. We were warmly welcomed (and, being an out-of-town traveler, it was sweet of the hostess to provide a place for me to charge my phone!). The food was innovative, beautifully prepared and delicious. Our waiter was happy to talk with us about menu items - we were curious about making some of the things ourselves, especially the 'salmon bacon' on the deviled eggs."

  • "We have been to Stained Glass 3 times and it is always a wonderful experience. The food is very unique--well-spiced, inventive preparations and side dishes--options that you don't find often, which makes it a treat to eat here. The portions are very generous. The service is friendly and helpful. Our waiter was warm and patient, as we were taking our time with our initial order. Among the standouts--Tuna, Tuna, Tuna, Lamb with delicious mint pesto, Salmon. And of course, the wine selection is excellent--including the moderately priced options and the flights."

  • "Our Saturday night dinner started fine. However, the kitchen must have had something going on. Our food took forever to arrive. To his credit, our server gave us free drinks and apologized for the delay before we even complained. Once the food arrived, the chicken entree was raw in the middle. The server seemed as horrified as we were. The entree was whisked away and a fully cook entree appeared in it's place some time later. The server delivered apologies from the chef. Again, considerately, we were not charged for that entree. Though the service touches were nice, I would rather pay for my food and beverage and have it arrive on time and properly prepared. "

  • "My wife and I were looking forward to eating here. We had heard and read much about it. Went there on a Tuesday evening. I requested iced tea and was given choice of two types: they were out of iced tea; both types. Their on-line menu and reviews spoke highly of their barramundi. They no longer carried it. I ordered the hanger steak. They were out of it. I later overheard that they were out of the pork chops also. We ordered the rack of lamb. We waited for them. The waiter came and told us the manager was looking into why the racks were taking so long and that we would be comped for dessert. When the lamb came, they were worth the wait. Tender, tasty, well-grimed. All that rack of lamb should be. We'll give it another try."
