A word from The Square
We are all about amazing local food and drink in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. We are a comfortable neighborhood gathering spot that places a huge value on the care put into the menu, our source of ingredients and the service given by our talented team. The Square is one restaurant in a family of restaurants (Sons & Daughters and Sweet Woodruff) and an 83 acre farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains (Dark Hill Farm). Our farm is the biggest influence on all our restaurants and is the main force behind The Square's straight forward Californian cuisine. The Square takes its name from a nickname of the historic Washington Square Bar & Grill that once occupied the space for nearly 30 years. We are humbled at the opportunity to fill such big shoes.

Come in and check us out for dinner and weekend brunch. We are located on Powell St. across from Washington Square Park. We take reservations as well as leave our full bar area available for walk-ins.
Diner Reviews
  • "We recently had dinner at The Square. I have eaten at this restaurant at most of it's reincarnations and this one is so good! This is such a great spot and I am glad to say that our food matched the ambience which also was very nice. There were four of us and we all had something different and none of us were disappointed."

  • "Food was very fresh and the drinks paired well for brunch. I was there for my bday and the service was excellent."

  • "I have heard that this restaurant is good for dinner but my first experience was at brunch and it did not meet expectations. I have sympathy for poor execution of service on a Sunday morning because I assume everyone is as hungover as I am. However, when the food is a let down too, I can't justify prices which are just as pricy as Park Tavern. There are five better brunches within three blocks so I hope they take note."

  • "Met up with friends from out of town and were thrilled with the service, atmosphere and especially the menu. Several great appetizers (the pork belly was delicious). We could have just had apps but the entrees were great too."

  • "The Square is a dining gem. Its a breath of fresh air and provides a modern, fresh menu that standouts among other restaurants in the neighborhood. The minimalist decor is lovely and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I would recommend The Square to anyone. I will definitely be coming back!"

  • "The food was overall okay but much too salty. I had the broccoli rabe and pork belly appetizers and for my entree the crispy chicken thigh. Again, while generally good, the meal was not memorable or particularly creative. Not likely to return."

  • "It's nice to see a new spot where the old Washbag offered so much fun. But the Square simply isn't nearly up to San Francisco dining standards. Service was friendly, courteous, and professional, however."

  • "We came here for dinner a few weeks ago and were blown away!! The food is outstanding and the service is knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. The cocktails were all extremely tasty. I can't really pick a favorite because I thought they were all very well executed. We had the bone marrow (which is only served at the bar, but they were kind enough to let us order at the table) which was delicious, the tartare, the ribs, the pasta with mushrooms(I would murder someone for another portion) and we had a salad as well(with all the cocktails, details are fuzzy). Everything was ridiculously tasty! As we were saddened by the departure of each dish, we were excited for the next!! A hidden gem, but a definite find. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "The food was perfect though the location was a bit chaotic."

  • "The food at the Square was wonderful, a happy addition for North Beach and one I will certainly return to. The service was a little slow but my only real concern was the noise level. The place was less than 2/3 full and it was uncomfortably loud."

  • "We went for a late sunday dinner and was amazed by the exceptionally good food and extraordinary service. I will come back for sure!"

  • "It was our first time dining at The Square last Sunday. We were six (3 couples) and four of us arrived early to enjoy cocktails at the bar. As the menu was compact we ended up ordering nearly everything on it. Without exception, the food was delicious, and we all felt we had discovered a fine new restaurant in North Beach. The one damper on the evening was our server. He was really a piece of work: annoying in his rote recitation of the menu which we could plainly read for ourselves, and in explaining dishes we had not asked questions about. He seemed to have a very high opinion of his skills as a server, but we really took issue with his need to expound on his enthusiasm for the death penalty in Texas, which is where he hails from."

  • "Fabulous cocktails, stellar service, and food that didn't intimidate my sweetheart. I came here to catch up with old colleagues in town for a conference and it did not disappoint!"

  • "Extremely friendly service, great-tasting and unique food. Portions are definitely on the small side and somewhat overpriced for what they were."

  • "Had a great Sunday dinner here and imagine this will become a neighborhood favorite for many. The menu isn't huge but it's got a great mix of craveable and interesting dishes, and portion sizes were pretty good. We started at the bar and had such a good time that we decided not to move to a table. Ended up talking to james, the bartender. He made us a few delicious custom cocktails, and even tested some apps on us - which coincidentally were the dishes wed planned on ordering anyway. We had a great time, the service was superb, the prices were reasonable and the food was great - dessert was fabulous, too. Oh god and that bread!! If you didn't know the square was related to Sons & daughters, the bread makes it hard to miss!! We'll be back!"

  • "The Square, the latest attempt to reimagine the famed Washington Square Bar and Grill, has succeeded where it's predecessors failed. The room itself has been stylishly updated while retaining the old ambience. The bartender was able to concoct a Vesper martini, and a good one at that. Nico's service pace was tranquil, giving you the opportunity to soak in the atmosphere, and her personality was perfect for an upscale romantic bistro. I had the cauliflower soup and the crispy chicken thigh entree. Both were outstanding, though, alas, the former was a poor value as $11 only got you about 4 spoonfuls."

  • "The cocktail menu reads like one from 30yrs ago (Harvey Wallbangers, White wine spritzers etc.), but when they arrive they're completely current. We ordered exclusively off starters and sides of the menu - so I can't speak for the mains - but what we ate was delicious. Each dish (roasted beats, chicken liver mousse with strawberry marmalade, mortadella with pickled veggies) was fresh and creative, had layers of complexity as well as surprises I didn't expect. Roasted cauliflower, fries with aioli and pork belly rounded out the meal. We're not huge fans of pork belly, but ordered to try. It was good. Fries were excellent. Cauliflower was good, not great. We only did a side of ice cream for dessert - it was a light, not too sweet version."

  • "I've been here a few times and have loved every meal. There hasn't been a single item on the menu I haven't enjoyed. Some of the new additions are great too. Can't go wrong with The Square. "

  • "Fantastic food. Each of us had 1 entree (the trout, the ribs and the pork chop), all were absolutely delicious, very tasty and delicately spiced. Portions were perfect. The decor is very trendy, though too dark to my taste. Waiters were very friendly and professional. The prices are a little high...but I guess that's just what SF has become unfortunately. I recommend the Square!"

  • "We dined on a Friday night as a group and happily shared our appetizers and entrees. The salumi was good, particularly the house made rabbit mortadella. The filling in the gougere, alas, completely overpowered any flavor of the gougere pastry itself. The hit entree was the trout which was prepared and boned perfectly; delicious. The bomb was the pork chop which was overcooked and quite quite dry; I inferred it had not been brined. The worst was the size of the pours of wine by the glass. I even had to immediately ask the server if a mistake had been made and she said no. Looked like a 4 oz. pour at very best. If you choose to dine here, buy wine by the bottle only. "

  • "The service was amazing and the food was great. Will definitely be coming back in the future."

  • "We returned drinks... The apps we all awesome, beef tartar-top notch! Charcuterie perfect- seared cauliflower- fantastic. Now the entrees- trout was good, pork hop was delicious but over salted the lamb shank was gummy and tough, we couldn't eat it. Server was understanding. The chocolate cake was Devine, roasted strawberries- yummy. We didn't see much of our server. We wanted lots of wine and cocktails but our server never asked....we had to beg for wine lists, refills on cocktails. "

  • "This is by the owners of Sons & Daughters and it is exactly what I was hoping for. It is the more informal version of S&D. Three reasons I LOVE this place: 1) fantastic food with a short but great wine list; 2) Informal setting but amazing service (well trained, knowledgeable, the moment you think of something they are at your table without the intrusive, in your face, too often water pouring, too loud, high pitched voice staff); 3) Open Late! The kitchen is open until 1am! This is a gem!"

  • "Great atmosphere. Contemporary yet cozy. Food was well presented and very flavorful. Service was impeccable. Would definitely go back."

  • "Food was fantastic - definitely look at the menu and make sure your group is ok with some unusual menu items though. Not someplace everyone can take mom. But the space is really comfortable but simple, and the food was all great. We had the risotto, the kale salad, the chicken liver, and the burger. All were fantastic, I would absolutely go again. Only knock was the service - absent most of the time, incredibly slow on getting us our food combined with no updates made it clear they were rookies. But nice servers...hopefully speed and attentiveness will improve. I'll go again. "

  • "From start to finish, the dinner that the four of us experienced, was an absolute treat. It started with the service as we entered through the door, each employee seemed to truly be enjoying themselves and doing their best to pass along that sentiment along to each of us. The dining experience was everything we had thought it would be, absolutely wonderful, each and every course better than the last. I would love to sit here and detail each entree we enjoyed but I honestly don't remember all the particulars, just that the overall experience of the food was perfection. We've already made reservations for our next visit, we're bring two lunatic foodie couples with us and I'm sure The Square will not disappoint."

  • "Location is lovely, across from the park. We got there on the early side (6 pm) and the staff was incredibly friendly. By 7, however, the restaurant was half full and the service declined dramatically. I complained to the manager about our wine (which we ordered at the start of the meal, and was not delivered until the end of the meal) who comped us free dessert, which was appreciated. That being said, I still won't be going back. The food was OK. "

  • "the service was cheerful but hopeless...too forever. The food was equally bad. limited menu, nothing very interesting and what we had was bordering on awful.. this place will be gone soon"
    Dined on 4/16/2014
  • "Selection on menu was very limited, very narrow selection. But that would be fine if the food was better. My ribs were tender but totally flavorless and the polenta was more like grits. Not a place for a return visit. Also the drinks were a shallow pour! Otherwise it is in a great location."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "The feasting portion of the menu was very overpriced and portions not comparable to the price. The 15% is arrogant. A tip is for good service and food not a mandatory supplement. I was disappointed and would not return."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "My companion and I had trouble deciphering most of the items on the menu. They were clearly designed for foodies, not for the general public. My companion had hoped for seafood, but the only things on the menu were oysters (@$2.50 each), roast whole crab (MP which was $56 that day), or roast whole trout ($24 on the "Sharing Menu). No salmon or sole."

  • "Place was packed and we ere told since day one, I like the open space redo of the dining room but it was very loud. The food upgrade was fantastic, loved the tartar and trout. Service had a couple misses (we had a show so need quick check) but back of house was helping with fast food runs. Start of a great night out and great start to new restaurant, we'll go again!"

  • "Everything about this restaurant was fine, food, service, design (the ambiance rating is not for the look of the place) - but the noise level is unacceptable. I'll never be back. By the way, OpenTable - you should redo the Noise Level rating choices above. "Energetic" is not appropriate for this place, and "Do Not Recall" misses the mark. DEAFENING!"

  • "Love the interior, staff was personable, but the noise level was too loud. Biggest complaint is the menu description and what you actually get. "Grilled sirloin bavette, king trumpet mushrooms & wasabi" What I got was one chunk of braised beef with 2 tiny mushrooms, 4 very tiny what could have been carrots, some tired old peas that were hard and leathery, a dollop of mashed potatoes, and I don't recall tasting wasabi. My husband's, "guinea hen, sunchokes and broccoli," was 2 small rounds of poultry, 2 tiny pieces of broccoli (seriously - how much can broccoli cost?) and about four small disks of sunchokes. Portions were really small and not what we had anticipated. Food tasted pretty good, but not worth the price, and we will not go back."

  • "These guys have clearly done a wonderful job setting up this new establishment. Service was thoughtful and attentive. Ambience was tasteful and exciting. The food was superb. We got the Chicken Liver Mousse, the Steak Tar Tar, Oysters, Bavarte Steak and the Burger. Each piece was very well done. The oyster mignonette was superb! We'd definitely head back!"
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "The chicken liver and beef tartar were really tasty although to be nit picky there wasn't enough of either crostini and chips to match the portions of the spreads. The chicken liver was borderline salty but had an amazingly smooth texture. The main bavette course was disappointing. Super small portion of bavette for too much $ and the "mushrooms" paired with was literally 1 king trumpet sliced lengthwise into three pieces or so. The peas were starchy and there was about 12 of them. The corpse reviver was way too acidic and honestly the wines by the glass were pretty expensive except one 9 (i think) sav blanc. Our server was super attentive and great! The space is really nice but super loud. We were almost yelling to hear each other."

  • "We had a great meal at The Square, but it is incredibly noisy. At one point it did quieten down a little, so someone somewhere jacked the music up at which point the noise exploded: we saw the hostess covering her ears! So we asked her if she could get it turned down, and she responded straightaway and things improved again. Food excellent, service great, no chance of a conversation - so go with someone you just want to nod and wave at, and you'll have a great time."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "They have potential to be a great neighborhood spot but there were some disappointments which I hope will be improved upon: 3 cocktails we ordered were served in very small glasses. House bread is a generic roll similar to the pull-aparts from Safeway Entree portions were small for the price. My dish was suppose to have broccoli and I was served exactly 1 bite. We were all still hungry after dinner. No one asked how our meal or experience was yet the place was swarming with staff/mgmt. The positive: Seated promptly, courteous wait staff, meal timed well and good food. Considering it was the opening week I will definitely go back for a second opinion."

  • "very boring meal of overpriced and forgettable food. what's not forgettable was the horrible noise. I couldn't even hear my dining companion across the table. The servers could hear us and the tables in the middle were like an obstacle. This must be a great location because I couldn't understand why it was packed when the food was very average and bland."
