A word from The Square
The Square is a new restaurant and bar by the team at Sons & Daughters, serving California cuisine. Located on Washington Square in North Beach, San Francisco, the Square is a casual restaurant where everyone is welcome. It is our mission to bring a new gathering place to North Beach, where sharing is at the heart of the dining experience. The menu encourages tables to participate in a group setting by offering larger roasts, fish, and whole animals, and the chef carving station in the dining room completes the experience. The bar program specializes in modern classic cocktails, drawing inspiration from the heritage of the neighborhood and from the former Washington Square Bar & Grill, colloquially known as The Square in the 70s and 80s.Continued

  • "Selection on menu was very limited, very narrow selection. But that would be fine if the food was better. My ribs were tender but totally flavorless and the polenta was more like grits. Not a place for a return visit. Also the drinks were a shallow pour! Otherwise it is in a great location."

  • "very boring meal of overpriced and forgettable food. what's not forgettable was the horrible noise. I couldn't even hear my dining companion across the table. The servers could hear us and the tables in the middle were like an obstacle. This must be a great location because I couldn't understand why it was packed when the food was very average and bland."

  • "The feasting portion of the menu was very overpriced and portions not comparable to the price. The 15% is arrogant. A tip is for good service and food not a mandatory supplement. I was disappointed and would not return."

  • "My companion and I had trouble deciphering most of the items on the menu. They were clearly designed for foodies, not for the general public. My companion had hoped for seafood, but the only things on the menu were oysters (@$2.50 each), roast whole crab (MP which was $56 that day), or roast whole trout ($24 on the "Sharing Menu). No salmon or sole."

  • "Place was packed and we ere told since day one, I like the open space redo of the dining room but it was very loud. The food upgrade was fantastic, loved the tartar and trout. Service had a couple misses (we had a show so need quick check) but back of house was helping with fast food runs. Start of a great night out and great start to new restaurant, we'll go again!"

  • "Everything about this restaurant was fine, food, service, design (the ambiance rating is not for the look of the place) - but the noise level is unacceptable. I'll never be back. By the way, OpenTable - you should redo the Noise Level rating choices above. "Energetic" is not appropriate for this place, and "Do Not Recall" misses the mark. DEAFENING!"

  • "The chicken liver and beef tartar were really tasty although to be nit picky there wasn't enough of either crostini and chips to match the portions of the spreads. The chicken liver was borderline salty but had an amazingly smooth texture. The main bavette course was disappointing. Super small portion of bavette for too much $ and the "mushrooms" paired with was literally 1 king trumpet sliced lengthwise into three pieces or so. The peas were starchy and there was about 12 of them. The corpse reviver was way too acidic and honestly the wines by the glass were pretty expensive except one 9 (i think) sav blanc. Our server was super attentive and great! The space is really nice but super loud. We were almost yelling to hear each other."

  • "Love the interior, staff was personable, but the noise level was too loud. Biggest complaint is the menu description and what you actually get. "Grilled sirloin bavette, king trumpet mushrooms & wasabi" What I got was one chunk of braised beef with 2 tiny mushrooms, 4 very tiny what could have been carrots, some tired old peas that were hard and leathery, a dollop of mashed potatoes, and I don't recall tasting wasabi. My husband's, "guinea hen, sunchokes and broccoli," was 2 small rounds of poultry, 2 tiny pieces of broccoli (seriously - how much can broccoli cost?) and about four small disks of sunchokes. Portions were really small and not what we had anticipated. Food tasted pretty good, but not worth the price, and we will not go back."

  • "These guys have clearly done a wonderful job setting up this new establishment. Service was thoughtful and attentive. Ambience was tasteful and exciting. The food was superb. We got the Chicken Liver Mousse, the Steak Tar Tar, Oysters, Bavarte Steak and the Burger. Each piece was very well done. The oyster mignonette was superb! We'd definitely head back!"

  • "We had a great meal at The Square, but it is incredibly noisy. At one point it did quieten down a little, so someone somewhere jacked the music up at which point the noise exploded: we saw the hostess covering her ears! So we asked her if she could get it turned down, and she responded straightaway and things improved again. Food excellent, service great, no chance of a conversation - so go with someone you just want to nod and wave at, and you'll have a great time."

  • "We went in on the second night and it was quite busy. We did wait quite awhile for our drinks even though there were a bunch of people working that night. Next time I go I want to sit in the dining room. We were too close to the bar. I would try it again to see how it is once they have more time to get it better together."

  • "They have potential to be a great neighborhood spot but there were some disappointments which I hope will be improved upon: 3 cocktails we ordered were served in very small glasses. House bread is a generic roll similar to the pull-aparts from Safeway Entree portions were small for the price. My dish was suppose to have broccoli and I was served exactly 1 bite. We were all still hungry after dinner. No one asked how our meal or experience was yet the place was swarming with staff/mgmt. The positive: Seated promptly, courteous wait staff, meal timed well and good food. Considering it was the opening week I will definitely go back for a second opinion."

  • "It was very good -- though still with a few kinks in service (we waiting a long time for our check). The ambience was good, and we liked our food. I was disappointed in the bread service. Despite the nice presentation, it tasted like a packaged dinner roll you buy at the grocery store. Also, can we have more than one? Appetizers: We got oysters, which were good. The other apps (beef tartare and asparagus) were good, but I the asparagus was luke warm at best. Both couples order entrees to share -- we got the ribs and they got the dungeness crab. We thought the ribs were VERY VERY good. They definitely liked the crab. Dessert: We didn't order because we wanted the galette but we needed 30 minute notice for that...which no one told us about."
