Diner Reviews
  • "Food and service was excellent. Valerie was our server and she was fabulous. Definitely need a reservation for dinner as the wait seemed to get very long without one. Disappointed in the wine list. I expected more from this caliber of restaurant. Very basic offerings and not much selection. Also, disappointed that we were there for our anniversary but no recognition from restaurant."

  • "Great food for a Sunday brunch. Only issue was length of time to get our car."

  • "Went early at 5:30 on week night. Jennifer our server was delightful...great presentation of menu and specials and informed us of brunch and lunch opportunities as well. We ordered the 8 oz filets and made subs for veggies. One had green beans and mashed potatoes and other had asparagus and squash....all delicious. Never have we had steaks prepared EXACTLY perfect and so tender. All was quite lovely. Service was fast...in and out in under an hour. Prices a bit high for us but well worth it for special event. Also the valet service was excellent. Very nice young men and helpful. Visitors will be happily welcomed and we thought it represented Nashville at its finest. Thanks for a first class meal."

  • "Our group made a last minute open table reservation at the Southern for a Sunday evening dinner. There were 4 adults and a 3 year old in our party. The atmosphere was perfect, and the food has ruined me for eating out elsewhere. Two members of our group ordered the Belle combo, one had the 26 oz steak, and another ordered country fried chicken. All were amazing. We also ordered a variety of desserts and ice cream that finished off an amazing meal. What made the Southern a cut above was our knowledgeable waiter, the perfectly cooked meat, and the perfectly crafted environment for delicious night out in Nashville. We will definitely make a repeat visit the next time we venture south."

  • "Food was amazing, we had the oysters to start they were fresh and delicious. Then we proceeded to main courses, my wife had the filet that was cooked to perfection she also had the butternut squash with goat cheese that was amazing. I had the fish on sweet potato grits that was very nicely done and very flavorful. Great selecton of craft beers. Unfortunately the service was slow and unattentive. If the food wasn't so great I would of sworn we were eating at the typical chain restaraunt."

  • "Have eaten here several times before- but I had made a reservation on opentable for my boyfriends birthday dinner and made special notes for a better seat bc of this- and they were on top of this when we got there- it was perfect and so very special- and the food was amazing! Plus we got a complementary deviled egg app from the manager- and if was out of this world, so good! Will definitely be back!"

  • "Everything about the southern was wonderful. From the comfort of the chairs to the decor. There were some awesome Designs in the main dining area up on the ceiling. The good was top notch! I ordered the ribs, paired with chive mashed potatoes and a side of southern Mac and cheese. My girlfriend got the filet and it was suburb. Very friendly staff and not too overly formal. Just the perfect blend of class and casual. Complimentary valet parking. Great location for other nightly activities. Go do yourself a favor and plan a dinner at The Southern!"

  • "After several good experiences at the Southern, brunch was a disappointment. Hostess ignored our request to sit in the bar, despite several open tables. We ordered drinks and were planning on staying to listen to music but after asking our waiter to wait to place our food order 3 times in 10 minutes we finally ordered. Food came out within 5 minutes of ordering, fries were cold, and waiter even tried to clear our plates while only halfway through our meal and drinks."

  • "Food was good, space very cool. Be warned of the split plate charge. $11 Caesar starter salad became $15 because we requested it be on 2 plates. No one advised of the cost.$15 for lettuce? Come on...."

  • "As visitors to Nashville, we make a point of stopping at Southern every time we're in town. They never disappoint. You can't go wrong with brunch, lunch, or dinner there."

  • "The food was tasty, but portions in view of price point was lacking. My husband left hungry after his order of pork belly tacos. My fish dish was lukewarm, but tasted good. My son's girlfriend got a steak that was overcooked and dry, and when we told the waiter he commented that it looked right according to her specifications, and offered "do you want me to do something about it", which didn't feel like the effort was to make it right. My son enjoyed his steak."

  • "Checked in at Host desk after arrivimg about 5 minutes early. Asked about the booth we requested. Was told there wasn't one. Seated near bar. Noted empty booth. Thought it was being held for another party. Good fast table service. Very loud, booth still empty. Food arrived. One order perfect one cold. Cold food was taken and replaced for hot. Booth still empty. Brainstorm: the booth was being held for us and hostess has not bothered to check to see if we had reserved. Checked with her and that was the case! So, when you check intake sure they check for the reservation. Don't expect amazing food. It was adequate."

  • "Great location at 3rd and Demonbreun in the Encore bld allows walking to various shows. Menu is pretty complete. The zydeco cocktail is recommended. We had the southern burger (spectacular), and the nudie steak cut and cooked as per your request. Also very good. Drew, our server did a good job. One of several very good spots downtown."

  • "The food quality was poor and expensive. I don't mind paying for good quality but this was a hugh disappointment. The steaks were very poor quality and the gumbo was way to hot. the vegetables were good. Also, way too noisy."

  • "We had a nice meal at the Southern. The fish and grits were good, but not a big portion - the ribs looked to be the thing to get if you are really hungry. Good time, nice meal, would go back again."

  • "The Southern is an incredible dinning experience! My husband and I made reservations 3 weeks in advance and decided that we would treat ourselves... by going all out! We started out at the bar for a couple drinks and then were quickly seated. We ordered crab cakes as an appetizer along with a dozen oysters on the half shell. I ordered The Belle medium rare with a side of their white cheddar mac & cheese. My husband ordered The Nudie Suite, as he got to go to the kitchen and pick out his own dry aged steak! We ended our meal with Chocolate Whiskey Cake and scoop of Jenis ice cream. Our overall experience was absolutely amazing. We would recommend The Southern to anyone! We enjoyed it to the fullest. We will be back!"

  • "As always, The Southern did not disappoint. Regardless of the meal period, expect fab food, friendly service, and an active ambiance. My husband and I love this restaurant and would frequent it more if we made it downtown more than once or twice a month. If you are dining with a group, here are some suggestions: -Make reservations in advance (hello OpenTable!) -It is a louder spot, so don't anticipate having deep and meaningful convos. Go to enjoy the surroundings and good food. -The Southern Burger is so worth the carbs and calories. -Blood Orange Mimosas for brunch- yes please! -Bring cash to tip the comp valet- or better yet, cab it and enjoy the libations!"

  • "This restaurant is doing everything the others are not doing. Seasoned service and artistic REAL food in a lively, old school meets new school atmosphere. Get a reservation on Open Table, it's like they've known you all your life when you walk in. If it's just you or you and one other person who don't mind, the bar seating is fantastic in this open room too. This time we got the best table in the house. The fresh fish special was amazing. 30ish bucks for something you CAN'T cook like that...is cheap. We also got the red meat BRISKET...and don't even get me started about it, or I will drool all over this keyboard. The wine list is not large, but the ones they pick, they stand behind and know everything about. The Malbec was delicious."

  • "My wife and I were visiting Nashville and the staff at the L & C Tower highly recommended the restaurant. We were able to make reservations through Open Table and could not have been more surprised and thrilled by the restaurant. We have travelled extensively and have had many opportunities for dining experience. This restaurant is in our top 5 of all places we have had the experience to enjoy the hostess desk, support staff (Crew), the bartenders, the wait staff, the general manager and owner were all engaging and welcoming into their little spice of heaven."

  • "Overall the experience at Southern was a good one. I highly recommend the crab cakes appetizer and smoked pork chops. However, here is my concern. Their wine list is highly priced. They have a pinot noir on there list that retails for $40.00 and they offer it for $110. I am not use to this type of markup. The same wine can be found at Kayne Prime for $80.00. So as good as the food was I will have difficulty making a decision to return. I do not mind paying a reasonable mark-up, but I would prefer not to be ripped off. If they are putting this type of markup on their wine the restaurant is truly not a good value to me. With so many great choices in Nashville why pay more than you should?"

  • "The Southern is a strange in between. It's too expensive to be a bar, but the atmosphere and food is not good enough to be considered a nice restaurant either. I went there for the first time while my parents were in town. My meal and my mom's were average at best. My dad got fish and grits and some oysters and he liked his. For $50 a person you expect it to be really good. My suggestion is to save the money and eat at a bar, or spend the money and go to Etch across the street. Etch is a nice restaurant with great atmosphere and every dish on the menu is impressive. I was really disappointed by The Southern."
