Two of us had the filets and one had the dry-aged strip. All were very good, on a par with the usual-suspects in town like Morton's and the Palm. The server had to remind us that the Southern is first and foremost a steak place. Too bad he forgot to remind the kitchen to bring the oysters we'd ordered. Never did get them. (When the steaks showed up after the salads he told us we should have reminded HIM. Nice.) Regular wine list was short but nicely curated; captian's list — meh. But overall a nice find, and they are open for all three meal times, which is surprising.

I frequent The Southern often, given it's location to the Symphony Hall, and other attractions. I love the food, love the service, and truly appreciate having such a wonderful restaurant in our city. It made me proud to see it listed in the NY Times. Well worth the trip.

We had a great time at the Southern this weekend! We were downtown Saturday morning anyway and decided we needed some brunch and had heard good things about the Southern. 15 minutes and a quick reservation and we were seated! The Bloody Mary was nice and spicy, and they have a nice beer and liquor selection and some really inventive cocktails. If you're debating on what to get, the steak benedict was so tasty! Our waiter told us that the steak is actually just end pieces from when they cut their filets for dinner service, so you get a mini-filet and with the hollandaise it's wonderful. It's also worth it to get the biscuits and gravy, they were our "appetizer" for the meal. We don't often make our way to downtown, but for the food there, we're going to start making an exception.

We went for lunch. A group of 4. All of our dishes ranged from $12-15 and the tiniest but delicious were the steak, egg and biscuit benedict. It was good but oh so tiny for $15. My friend order the burger and I was SUPER jealous. My husband ordered the hot chicken salad and that looked and tasted amazing too. Another ordered the oysters and seemed very happy. Coffee was just ok needs to be better next time, but the bloody mary's were tasty. I ado think the live music was too loud. We seemed to be yelling during brunch to talk.

A bit of the bayou has found its way to Nashville. Took our teenage son here for dinner before symphony: the Schermerhorn is literally across the street, and the restaurant is in the same building as the Pinnacle parking garage. As with most restaurants in Nashville, there is also valet service. Open floor plan, very clean, buzzing with energy on a Friday night: the bar was especially hopping, and the place was filled with tantalizingly dressed beautiful people out for a night on the town. Reasonable wine and beer selection, with a lovely range of specialty mixed drinks. The Dominican pulled pork appetizer was some of the best we have ever had; the banh mi taco was a lovely collection of Asian-inspired flavors, although the pork belly was authentically fatty; the catch of the day salad proved to be a perfect light entree, grilled salmon over greens with wheat-berries, almonds, and dried cranberries. Dessert was a disappointment: the so-called red grits turned out to be pre-made jelly in a jar, with a single raspberry standing in for the promised seasonal berries. Next time we plan to try the chocolate whiskey cake! Service was pleasant but slightly slow, perhaps because the restaurant was so busy; even when prompted, our waiter had some difficulty spelling out the range of specials of the day. Feel free to dress casually: servers wear jeans and checked open-collar shirts, many with cowboy boots. Although we did not sample any, there is an entire menu devoted to oysters from across the globe. Clearly a hot spot for the downtown crowd, there are numerous separate rooms for private parties, as well as a small number of tables for two along the one wall with windows that would be perfect for a romantic or special-occasion dinner. We will definitely be back, perhaps with a larger party.

My daughter and I were on our first trip to Nashville and a friendly shuttle driver recommended this restaurant. We walked through on a very busy Monday night football crowd and the place smelled delicious but had an hour wait so we made reservations for mid-week and had a wonderful meal. Great restaurant! Noisy but the food was great. My hand picked steak was great. My wive's pork chop was also great. The Red Grits (Tapioca with a variety of berries) topped off a great meal. Steven our waiter was great and his recommendations were spot on! Philip the manager was very hospitable and made sure we were well serviced and the food was perfect. I would recommend it to anyone and it is conveniently located near the Johnny Cash and Country Music Hall of Fame Museum.

Ours was a first time visit to The Southern, selected because of its proximity to the Schermerhorn. Yet, that mundane reason for choosing a restaurant led us into a delightful dining experience. We were greeted warmly, seated immediately, and taken care of in a gracious way. Our orders were brought in short order, and service was attentive throughout the meal. The blue-cheese biscuits and steak appetizer was an excellent starter, and the fish tacos with jicama slaw were quite the treat. Had we know how good the food would be, even the short wait time would have seemed too long! And, of course, the availability of Jeni's ice cream for dessert didn't hurt either! We'll be back -- whether there's a concert or not!

I would definitely recommend this place for brunch. The atmosphere was great (lots of TVs playing college football), the service was excellent and the options diverse. Mimosas were only $4.00, so impossible to go wrong. As the Southern is known for oysters, I got two and they were really good. I ordered the Southern Fried Egg Sandwich, which I must admit, was only average. The quality of the bacon was great and the fries were amazing. My friend ordered the steak (which they are also known for) and biscuit Benedict, which she really liked. Also, like everywhere in Nashville there was live music.

Cool ambiance, the oysters were really good and we like the grilled option which was surprisingly good. The fish tacos were good but not great as lacked a bit of flavor but the hamburger received top marks. The deviled egg was a nice starter for the group. Drink menu had a number of interesting options but since we went for lunch, decided to hold off on the alcohol.
