Diner Reviews
  • "Food was phenomenal, we went for brunch . Gumbo was wonderful, shrimp and grits out of this world. A wonderful experience!"

  • "Food was really good. Our group had selections ranging from steak, baby back ribs , fried chicken salad to Bahn mi tacos. All were excellent. Our server was very patient with all of our questions. We also had several of the broad selection of raw oysters and they were all delicious. Only drawback is background music is pretty loud so it is a little hard to carry on a conversation without almost yelling even though we were in a booth in the corner."

  • "A booth helped some with the noise level on Friday night. He helped us choose a dozen blue point oyster grilled with lemon and herbs. We shared a whole rack of dry rubbed ribs that was wonderful. We had a nice wine and walked across the street to see a wonderful whoopi Goldberg performance."

  • "Went here for breakfast and was very pleased with everything about this place. Good sized portions, reasonably priced and friendly service. I had a basic meal of eggs, biscuits, bacon and grits and enjoyed every bite. Had enough to eat that I was able to skip lunch that day."

  • "My daughter recommended this restaurant.....said it was a must see!! She was right!! It IS a must see!"

  • "I took friends from out of town to sunday brunch and it was a perfect outing. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and fun. The steak and egg benedict was yummy, the music good, and overall experience great. My friends were impressed and will tell folks in Philadelphia how great Nashville is!"

  • "My first time there for brunch and everything was phenomenal! We started out with some oysters (6 raw, 6 chargrilled) and they were outstanding. We also had the blood orange mimosas and they were fantastic. I had the southern fried egg sandwich with grilled potatoes and it was tasty! We finished leisurely with desserts and coffee. I would definitely recommend this to friends and family!"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday Brunch! Will definitely go again."

  • "The Southern is a perfect compliment to the downtown dining scene and offers an escape from the often hectic Broadway traffic. Our table of four enjoyed the crab cake and shrimp appetizers, red snapper (fish of the day), shrimp with sweet potato grits, fish tacos, and topped off the meal with a complimentary birthday dessert, bread pudding. The Southern offers contemporary slant to traditional dishes from the South in a way that will keep me coming back! Brunch is also great- especially the fried chicken & waffles."

  • "We were in town for our anniversary and took the recommendation from a friend to have dinner at the Southern. We had a great meal and great service."

  • "Seated at reserved time. Staff was extremely courteous but the thing that most impressed me was the food. Not only was it superbly prepared but it was delivered to our table fresh and piping hot. The fish and grits were amazing as was the bread pudding. I will definitely return!"

  • "I'm a shrimp & grits aficionado, & these were the best I've ever had. The steam biscuit (of which I stole a few bites was great too, I'll probably order it next time. Use the complimentary valet parking, the other local parking is expensive."

  • "The entire experience was outstanding. I had a wonderful time with my husband and another couple. We all loved our food and drinks. The best part is that my husband got to choose his own cut of beef (he had the ribeye). Never been to a restaurant that allowed him to meet the executive chef and interact like that. Very cool experience and will definitely be coming back next time we are in Nashville! Thanks for a wonderful night out."

  • "A fun atmosphere combined with a modern spin on southern cuisine equals a great dining experience. We started with crisp briny Kumamoto oysters. I had a perfectly cooked 8 ounce filet (would have made an excellent sandwich the next day if we were not staying in a hotel). My husband was delighted with his double cut pork chop which has a crisp outside and a tender inside...just they way he likes it. The Southern is on our return to list the next time we are in town (from Thousand Oaks, CA)."

  • "Great Place to start your weekend. Great Steaks and Oysters. Will be back!!!!!"

  • "I love taking visitors to the Southern for a couple reasons. Really the first being that I love any excuse to go back there! It's also at a great location right by the Country Music Hall of Fame as well as two blocks away from Broadway and all the bars down there. Which makes it easy to get in a full day of sight seeing after brunch. The food is also great! I always order the Cuban with a side of avocado and even though I'm not a breakfast person I could eat that every morning. Another great thing about The Southern for brunch is they have a small band that plays music which you eat. I had their dinner once and wasn't super impressed, plus it was a little out of my price point. But I'm a big big fan of their brunch!"

  • "Dry aged steak has a great flavor on its own merit. Why hide behind an overuse of salt? Biscuit crackers are fantastic. Side order of asparagus was pricey and only 8 small wimpy spears. Mashed spuds helped to overcome the heavy use of salt on strip steak. Guess they want to increase beer sales."

  • "Food was good, vibrant atmosphere, great bar......the hearts salad was excellent and unique."

  • "The hostess sat us for our reserved brunch time but no one came to wait on us, no water, no drink order, nothing. Finally after being there for 20 min, I flagged down a waiter for a neighboring table & explained the situation. He was apologetic & nice about the whole situation. He took our order & our food came out quicker than other tables.Unfortunately since he was so busy we really didn't get waited on again until we flagged him down for our check. It was disappointing that the manager didn't even come to apologize. The food was ok, we've had better at Midtown Tavern (we got the chocolate chip pancakes & the steak benedict). The oysters and our drinks were tasty though. May only come back for oysters and drinks in the future at the bar."

  • "My husband & I ate at the Southern one night before a Nashville Symphony performance, & the crab cakes were the best I've ever had, no joke. They absolutely melted in my mouth & they were served with white hominy, which is something I love but might not have thought of with crab cakes. It was a most perfect combo! My husband chose the dry-aged steak & he said it was superb. Our waitress was very friendly & knowledgeable about the menu & the atmosphere was great. The way the room is situated in a round-about way is very cozy & inviting. Just to mention a personal observation, I LOVE the ceiling fans! I would definitely recommend reservations on a weekend night."

  • "One of my favorite places to eat downtown. No matter what you order, or what time of day you go, the food and service are excellent. I love their oysters and their saffire steak biscuits! Carlvin, our server, made it a great experience. We will definitely be returning!"

  • "The restaurant was noisy and the service was not overly attentive. The noise factor is just an issue of the layout which is part of the atmosphere. Just beware - not the place for an intimate evening. The wait staff was friendly; they just were not present enough. Some consideration should have been given to the fact that the entrance doors open directly into the dining area especially given the outside temperature that particular evening. The quality of the food is what made this experience worthwhile."

  • "Great breakfast and excellent service in downtown Nashville. Heather killed on the service. I have already made another rez."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "The servers were great. Fish tacos were amazing as well. The food was really slow coming out. The oysters still held sand. So, parking and price considered, probably not my go to place."
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "I highly suggest this place for any special event. Don't valet as it is awful at lunch time. You can park for free in the Pinnacle building garage for up to 3 hours. Atmosphere is exciting and food was wonderful."

  • "I wanted to keep eating. It was heaven. One of the best meals I have eaten in a while."

  • "This place is awesome. From the door everyone was so nice and friendly. The bar area is the best place to eat. Oysters were so delicious, kinda pricey but it's worth every penny. My favorite place to eat. Great place to bring someone who is new to the city. Allergy friendly. Their steaks will change your life"

  • "We had out of town guest that we took out downtown. This place is a perfect start with a fun cocktail menu and great food!"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "I picked my own steak and it was the best I have had in any restaurant. My husband had the gumbo and an order of oysters and said they were both fantastic. The only thing I did not like was the asparagus. It was served plain, no seasoning or butter. It was definitely healthy but not tasty. I would definitely dine here again - outstanding."
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "Loved the free valet service, out table reservation was right on time for a very busy Saturday night. Server was excellent and all the food from oysters to steaks to wine to the yummy little bisquits were fantastic! Be sure to try all their bottled sauces but be careful the little private label bottled hot sauce is really hot!"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "The steak's flavor (prime sirloin) was great - and it was cooked just right - medium rare - but it was pretty tough and a bit grissly. The oysters - blue points - were very good."

  • "What an enjoyable experience! From our first step into the restaurant to our last step out of the establishment it was a pleasurable experience. The menu was varied as well as the wine list. Our choices were delicious and we ate every bite. Typically we have a box to go but not from this restaurant. Everything disappeared. The only negative was the noise level but I do not know how to make it less noisy with the amount of people eating and enjoying themselves. Highly recommend."

  • "Despite being very crowded, we had some of the best service we have ever experienced from a restaurant. The waitress was helpful and interested and the manager stopped by the table. The food was good (oysters are a must) and the drinks were creative."
