The SouthernSo nice!Went here for a girls night out and omg everyone in my group loved it! The menu is very ecclectic and while the prices are somewhat moderate, we were all able to find an affordable option that we enjoyed. One hit was the variety of oysters here. We all were amazed to learn how many different type there are and Brandon was excellent. A really fun place, I will definitely go back!5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMDowntown GemMy favorite spot to grab a drink and/or bite before a concert or any other downtown event! The hummingbird is the best cocktail if you like the bubbly...and please try the deviled eggs. Yum5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Sunday BrunchEnjoyed a blood orange mimosa, fresh coffee and the Southern fried egg sandwich - great place for brunch, live music and nice ambience.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMDeliciousThe sirloin steak was very good aand cooked as ordered. We also enjoyed the fish tacos and biscuits.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat brunch spotEnergetic, casual and a unique brunch menu make this a great spot for a weekend brunch, particularly with out of town guests.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceWill go back. Portions a little small for $ but its all good.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat choice for variety!Brought some out of town friends here, the menu was very diverse and the food was good. Will definitely return!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMDeliciousDelicious food but a little pricey...The portion sizes were good though. I will definitely be back and will definitely recommend to others.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMSouthern deliversMy wife and I went for a special occasion to check out this new offering in burgeoning SoBro. Friday evening had both the bar and the restaurant hopping. Great location with valet parking and open floor plan. Service was prompt and attentive, the menu is yet another interesting local take on Southern cuisine. We stuck to basics, oysters and steaks, which were excellent. Good variety of both are offered. My only critical comment is that the ambiance was loud, with table conversation difficult, and communication with staff sometimes unintelligible. Although fine for a night out, this would not work well as a place to do business.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMThe menu is so different thanThe menu is so different than aniyhing i have experienced. I try to visit every time i am in town and now have successfully eaten eight entrees and four appetizers. THE ONLY DISAPPOINTMENT is that my favorite desert item, the hummbingbird cake is no longer on the menu.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food but very noisyThis would become a new go-to spot for me if it were not for the noise level. I would not want to go The Southern for a meal with friends to catch up and talk. I could barely hear myself think. The food was spot on and the service attentive.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMCioppino was excellentSuper menu made it hard to decide, but the Cioppino (seafood stew in buttery soup) was fantastic. Glad they served lightly toasted bread so I could mop up every last drop!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's Day BrunchI took my mom this past Saturday. The Southern is a beautiful restaurant and the food was good. The online menus included one "anytime" but as it turns out, it isn't. The brunch menu was a bit limited although we both found something to try. I had the "my way" (too much browned butter) and my mom had the shrimp and grits, which she enjoyd. It was extremely noisy and the atmosphere was closer to that of a sports bar than fine dining establishment. We discovered on arrival that on weekends there is a 3 piece band and while the music was very nice, we were seated at the table closest to the front door (and band) and had a difficult time hearing each other. I would definitely eat there again but probably not on a weekend. Too loud.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing ExperienceMy husband and I dined at The Southern on Saturday, May 11. All in all, the entire experience was excellent. The bartenders were very attentive and knowledgable about all the different selections of oysters. Our server was fantastic and did a great job of providing the perfect level of service. She sold my husband on the "nudie suit" and me on the fresh catch of seared yellowfin tuna. It was truly a one of a kind experience to be able to choose your specific cut of steak. Everything was cooked perfectly and exceeded all our expectations. We will definitely return and bring all our friends. The Southern is a must for all to try. You will not be disappointed!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome experience!!!We randomly take friends to eat at The Southern, and everyone loves it! We always have at least three dozen Apalachacola oysters during Happy Hour, they are awesome too! You must visit the Nudie Suit. Everything we've ever ordered was incredible. Top suggestions, other than oysters, are fried green tomatoes, Southern ribs, and every steak! I guarantee if you love Southern style cuisine, you will not be disappointed!!5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat but somewhat overpricedOur dining experience was for a special occasion, so we were prepared to shell out some cash. Everything was great but we still found ourselves at the end of the night questioning the price tags. Really, $50 dollar steaks? Considering the casual ambience I guess we were just a little sticker shocked by the elitist prices. After all, Nashville is famous for its barbecue and southern eats and The Southern is just another on the list. To be honest you could have just as good of a meal somewhere else, but for a fraction of the price.
That said, I can't think of anywhere else you can get great oysters. Despite the price tags, I am sure we will return at some point.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGood choice in downtown Nashville.Tasty food-try the ribs and the variety of fresh oysters from both coasts- together with excellent service make this a fun destination. Quite loud when busy so not the place for intimate conversation! Corkage is $20.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMAnniversary DinnerI took my wife here for our anniversary. The service was quite good and attentive. The food was excellent as well. I do find that the trend of Nashville's downtown restaurants casual employee attire to be interesting even though the food isn't cheap. I understand the why: as it's so that restaurant's don't want to be off-putting to the casual tourist strolling by, but I personally prefer my food, decor et al to be of one accord.
My wife and I enjoyed the entire evening from drinks to dessert.
Thanks for a great time!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMBadWaitress2013My waitress had no personality. She was very unapproachable. This was a special occasion for my Mother, and the waitress just seemed so unengaged. The food and atmosphere was awesome. Your only downfall was my waitress. I just feel that "She" was supposed to represent "The Southern". She was the first contact many of my party had experienced upon their 1st time visiting "The Southern". The waitress built no repor with the guest. Very disappointed.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMUnique bar style setting withUnique bar style setting with very good food. Great selection of beef and oysters.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic ExperienceThe Southern was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. The ambiance was great. A little shabby chic/country but yet upscale at the same time. Our waitress was so friendly and informative. The food was incredible and the prices weren't bad either. For an upscale restaurant with a down-home feel, go to the southern. I hear they have an awesome brunch too!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMBirthday BrunchI was in Nashville with family celebrating my 21st birthday and after reading a LOT of reviews, I made reservations for brunch at The Southern. The restaurant itself has a really fun, laid-back but hip vibe and the huge bar in the middle of the main room promised good things. There were six people in our party and it was nice to have a booth big enough to spread out in a little. Our waiter (Stephen) was INCREDIBLE - hilarious, checked in just enough to make sure our drinks were never empty, and gave great tips on what to see/eat/drink in Nashville. He had a great energy, and that, coupled with a great meal and lovely/strong drinks, made The Southern one of the more memorable stops on the trip. I would definitely recommend to friends.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMFood is consistently deliciousOnce again The Southern has not disappointed. The service and food were great! Our fish and steak dishes were cooked perfectly as well as the accompanying vegetables. And, the drinks from the bar were excellent and not watered down or weak versions we've experienced at other restaurants. Great night out!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMMust try:
Bless Your HeartMust try:
Bless Your Heart salad (where can I purchase that dressing!?)

My Way pasta
We were visiting Nashville for the weekend - so glad we found the Southern! Prompt seating, fantastic service (Erika), and well prepared food. We'll definitely return.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat location-great service-My 2nd trip to the southern. A great place for dinner before going down town. Its nice to have something down town that isnt about $20 cheeseburgers & fries or some hokey "theme" of some type.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMA++++++We ordered oysters and they were the best we've ever had anywhere. We also ordered the salmon which was cooked to perfection. Can't wait to try this place again!5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat foodFood was great, had the nudie ribeye one of the best steaks I have had in Nashville in a long time It was cooked perfect, chef Mat was very helpful in selection of cut. Oysters were very good, will be coming back.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMLove it!Love the Southern! Every time I've been the service and food have been outstanding. Emerson was our server for this particular visit and he's incredible—so friendly and accommodating! The manager stopped by for a hello which is always a plus. We did want to make a side swap which was declined so that was the only disappointment. Otherwise still a favorite!4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMCheck out Eric with a "C"Morgan took great care of us as we checked in and quickly transitioned us from first available to patio...though the reservation was for 8 PM and the place was on an 1:30 wait when we arrived, we were seated at the perfect table on the patio by 8:05.
Eric was our server....bringing a solid combination of charisma, passion and knowledge to the table, he guided us towards 3 different kinds of oysters, fish & grits and a 5-week aged bone-in ribeye...they were all cooked to perfection. My asparagus was perfectly grilled and not wilted and the fries, which I first questioned as a compliment to a 5-week old steak, were perfect when they brought out the "Texas Ketchup"
Great experience, but the service knocked it out of the park!4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMHighly recommend for bothHighly recommend for both food and service. We were there on a Saturday, and were expecting to order from the lunch menu but it was not available. Only brunch was served, which seems odd for a Saturday. There was a nice trio playing as you walk in, but the noise and volume of the trio would have been overwhelming if seated near the entrance.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was our favorite placeThis was our favorite place in Nashville. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great Pinot Noir w/ appetizers. The pasta w/ fried eggs was our favorite. The beet and palm salad was unique and light. We also tried the sesame shrimp, crab cakes and biscuits and tenderloin. Had we known we were being served the chive biscuits before dinner, we might have chosen another dish. The strawberry shortcake was fresh and a great way to end the meal.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Southern is the perfectThe Southern is the perfect spot for dinner or appetizers prior to an event at the Arena or the symphony. The food was good but not to a "foodie" level. It was a great atmosphere and perfect as for location. We sat in the bar area which was noisy but just fine with us.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAfter reading many reviewsAfter reading many reviews of this restaurant, we decided that we needed to try it out. It was great, food and service was great. There is a bar in the center of the restaurant which can get a bit busy as people wait for their table. Getting reservations is a challenge with the normal dinner hours filling up fast. If you don't make a reservation you could wait up to an hour. So try and make reservation before you get to Nashville if only staying a couple of days.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMI can't say enough about thisI can't say enough about this place. It was awesome and I want to go back immediately...for brunch, lunch, whatever. For a price of its quality, I'd expect to pay much more.
Get the ribs...or the chicken friend chicken. My wife and I went for her birthday and were overjoyed with the new find in downtown Nashville.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMI've never written a restaurantI've never written a restaurant review. My experience at The Southern deserved it. The food was great. We tried lots of things but the highlight was the Hot Chicken Salad. This has become my new favorite place to dine in Nashville.4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat atmosphere, drinks, foodI'm having a hard time reviewing because I loved my meal & hated my boyfriends as he did as well. The ambiance was awesome for Sunday Brunch & made our reservation on Opentable, seated immediately. There was a live jazz band. We started off with our fresh oysters, they have a great list of options with discriptions of what youre getting into. however overpriced in my opinion for oysters but at least they were quality. I had the brunch plate called the cuban and it was perfectly made. He had the Steak & Biscuit Benedict plate and I've never tasted butter on a plate like that. It was extremely too rich to the point of not being able to eat it. I should have given feedback to the restaurant but unfortunately we didn't. Red Sangria was amazing.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMMy husband and I went to NashvilleMy husband and I went to Nashville for a long weekend to celebrate our first anniversary and made reservations for brunch at The Southern. It was a great decision! The service was excellent and so was the food. There was a live band playing great music, and the volume was perfect. We could enjoy the music without having to shout over it. The decor was lovely and perfectly added to the Nashville experience. I would definitely go back the next time I'm in Nashville and strongly recommend it to anyone planning a visit!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMWow! A wonderful experiance! The moment we walked in we just knew it was going to be good. Our waiter AJ was awesome and really took care of us from suggesting the perfect oyster from the many choices on the menu to the best drinks from the bar. I ordered the bone in ribeye and was able to chose the one I wanted from their precut selection. It was a prime cut that was cooked perfect. Awesome sums it up.
We will definitely be going back.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMTook clients before a Pred'sTook clients before a Pred's game and everthong was excellent.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful experience thisWonderful experience this time. The previous time our waiter was very flakey and the service wasn't good. This time we had a very good waitress. Food was excellent both times. The restaurant is rather noisey though.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was excellent. Our serverFood was excellent. Our server was wonderful and knowledgeable of all of the menu items. A wonderful evening with friends in a great atmosphere.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMLove this restaurant, whichLove this restaurant, which is why I go there everytime I am in Nashville.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOur experience at the SouthernOur experience at the Southern was wonderful! What a nice addition to the Nashville restaurant scene! We plan on going back real soon with familty that's visiting from out of town.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMWe celebrated my dad's 70thWe celebrated my dad's 70th birthday at the Southern on April 13. A wonderful time was had by all and our waiter was able to answer all our unusual questions. ; )4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMWe ate every morsel of food,We ate every morsel of food, including dessert. Our server, Michelle, was amazing. We brought out of town guests and they were equally impressed. I can't wait for the warm weather so we can try out the patio dining.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was inventive, deliciousFood was inventive, delicious and plentiful. Restaurant had to be 100+ decibels at 7:30pm on a Friday night. Impossible to have a conversation with dinner mates without yelling. Never going back. Too bad.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMMy Nashville favoriteI cannot explain how much I have loved EVERY meal that I've had at the Southern. Drink menu, breakfast, lunch and dinner = all amazing. I love the delicious grits, breakfast sandwiches and the hot tea selection. I love the hot chicken salad (and the hint of blue cheese and pickles). I tried the Southern burger with pimento cheese on my last visit, and it was wonderful. I have never, ever enjoyed pimento cheese (did I say ever?), but it was GREAT on that burger. I've typically had great service. The breakfast crowd is usually light. Lunch is busy after 12:30 and dinner is always busy; I suggest making a reservation. Check it out before a show at the Symphony Center or midweek for lunch. You won't be disappointed.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good oysters, all 3 preparationVery good oysters, all 3 preparations. And the apalachicolas are well priced.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, especially ifGreat food, especially if you like southern cuisine with a twist. Oyster selection is impressive - we had 1/2 dozen on the half shell and 1/2 dozen char-grilled - outstanding. Deviled eggs are unique and a must try. 2 in our group ordered starter plates as entrees - the jumbo shrimp (biggest I've ever seen) and the pulled pork. I had the chicken fried chicken - not your traditional style but quite good. It is hard to make a decision because so much on the menu sounds good.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved it!We hit this place before an event and we were a little rushed. The server was very accommodating and the fish he brought out was AMAZING. Someone else in our party said it's a little sexier after dark. In the bright light of day it didn't seem that awesome, but that was our fault for having such a nerdy, early reservation! I would definitely go back when I have more time!!4/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
