Diner Reviews
  • "The first time we went to The Southern was for brunch, and I think that will remain the reason we go at all. After our great brunch experience, we decided to definitely try dinner ( Note: I highly recommend you make reservations for dinner. As we walked in to be seated I overheard them say the wait was over an hour). While the food WAS good, the menu was short and it was a bit overpriced for the small portions that were served. Overall The Southern is not a bad place. It's neat and energetic and the staff are very friendly. Will I go back for dinner? No. For brunch? Absolutely. "

  • "Wonderful brunch! Would have liked to give higher reviews but portions were very small. Also, their mimosa did not have much taste especially did not seems like fresh squeezed orange juice. "

  • "My friend and I were visiting Nashville from out of town and everyone told us we need to get lunch at the Southern. All in all, it did not disappoint. The food was amazing and we had perfect weather for outdoor seating. I would definitely recommend this to others. "

  • "This was my first time at The Southern and it won't be my last! I went for brunch with a group of friends. The food was great and the prices were incredibly reasonable. I had the chicken and waffles and split the homemade granola and yogurt with some friends. There were so many great sounding items on the menu I'm going to need to go back to try it all. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly as well and was able to make great recommendations."

  • "We were in Nashville for one night to see a broadway play and chose Southern due to the ability to make a reservation online. We also viewed the menu online and thought it sounded delightful. The valet parking was free....what a perk! The atmoshphere was just what you are looking for in a great date night, rustic southern charm meets chabby chic trendy. The food, needless to say, was amazing! My husband hasn't stopped talking about his oysters!! Will definitely visit again!"

  • "We have been to the Southern several times and it never disappoints. Excellent service and the Fish and Hrits continues to be my "go to" entree."

  • "Ordered: Deviled eggs, gumbo, crab cakes, 8oz steak and my wife had the risotto. I liked my steak - cooked perfect. The deviled eggs are smoked and like none other I've had - a must try if you go - very different and very good. My wife said her risotto was too lemony but I liked it. Crab cakes were good - light and fresh but pretty steep as tow dinky ones were around $14. I don't think I'd get those again. "

  • "Food, service and overall experience was good. Too loud for quiet conversation. Perfect downtown location. Convenient to everything."

  • "Really enjoyed the steak and fish my wife and I got at the Southern. Started with fried green tomatoes as appetizer which was also great. Service was also above average."

  • "Best food we had in Nashville!!! They make a killer sazerac and boast a healthy bar menu as well. DO NOT MISS THE WHISKY CHOCOLATE CAKE!!!!!"

  • "7 girls in town from Maryland for the weekend found this gem to be the perfect spot for superb southern hospitality. Our table was ready even a few minutes before our reservation, which was unfortunate only because we would have liked to listen to the jazz combo up close for a little bit longer. The service was attentive but not intrusive. We sampled 5 different offerings from the menu and each was as delicious as the next as were the bloody marys and bellinis! A big bonus was Jeni's ice cream for dessert. A VERY enjoyable time for our last event in Nashville."

  • "Fabulous filet and sirloin. House cocktail tea is yummy. Use the free valet parking to make parking easy on yourself."

  • "The food was great, but the cocktails where awesome. Oysters were delicious and top notch. Caesar salad was fine. Steak biscuit bites were fantastic! Beautiful restaurant inside. Ladies restroom has a nice surprise. The bar was also gorgeous and the circular set up is cool. We would go back."

  • "Great place for brunch with a group of people. It is loud, but not because of the restaurant's music, just from all of the people talking at their tables. Food was amazing, and it is hard to go wrong with your choice of dish."

  • "Food was phenomenal, we went for brunch . Gumbo was wonderful, shrimp and grits out of this world. A wonderful experience!"

  • "Food was really good. Our group had selections ranging from steak, baby back ribs , fried chicken salad to Bahn mi tacos. All were excellent. Our server was very patient with all of our questions. We also had several of the broad selection of raw oysters and they were all delicious. Only drawback is background music is pretty loud so it is a little hard to carry on a conversation without almost yelling even though we were in a booth in the corner."

  • "A booth helped some with the noise level on Friday night. He helped us choose a dozen blue point oyster grilled with lemon and herbs. We shared a whole rack of dry rubbed ribs that was wonderful. We had a nice wine and walked across the street to see a wonderful whoopi Goldberg performance."

  • "Went here for breakfast and was very pleased with everything about this place. Good sized portions, reasonably priced and friendly service. I had a basic meal of eggs, biscuits, bacon and grits and enjoyed every bite. Had enough to eat that I was able to skip lunch that day."

  • "I took friends from out of town to sunday brunch and it was a perfect outing. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and fun. The steak and egg benedict was yummy, the music good, and overall experience great. My friends were impressed and will tell folks in Philadelphia how great Nashville is!"

  • "My first time there for brunch and everything was phenomenal! We started out with some oysters (6 raw, 6 chargrilled) and they were outstanding. We also had the blood orange mimosas and they were fantastic. I had the southern fried egg sandwich with grilled potatoes and it was tasty! We finished leisurely with desserts and coffee. I would definitely recommend this to friends and family!"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday Brunch! Will definitely go again."

  • "The Southern is a perfect compliment to the downtown dining scene and offers an escape from the often hectic Broadway traffic. Our table of four enjoyed the crab cake and shrimp appetizers, red snapper (fish of the day), shrimp with sweet potato grits, fish tacos, and topped off the meal with a complimentary birthday dessert, bread pudding. The Southern offers contemporary slant to traditional dishes from the South in a way that will keep me coming back! Brunch is also great- especially the fried chicken & waffles."

  • "Seated at reserved time. Staff was extremely courteous but the thing that most impressed me was the food. Not only was it superbly prepared but it was delivered to our table fresh and piping hot. The fish and grits were amazing as was the bread pudding. I will definitely return!"

  • "I'm a shrimp & grits aficionado, & these were the best I've ever had. The steam biscuit (of which I stole a few bites was great too, I'll probably order it next time. Use the complimentary valet parking, the other local parking is expensive."

  • "The entire experience was outstanding. I had a wonderful time with my husband and another couple. We all loved our food and drinks. The best part is that my husband got to choose his own cut of beef (he had the ribeye). Never been to a restaurant that allowed him to meet the executive chef and interact like that. Very cool experience and will definitely be coming back next time we are in Nashville! Thanks for a wonderful night out."

  • "A fun atmosphere combined with a modern spin on southern cuisine equals a great dining experience. We started with crisp briny Kumamoto oysters. I had a perfectly cooked 8 ounce filet (would have made an excellent sandwich the next day if we were not staying in a hotel). My husband was delighted with his double cut pork chop which has a crisp outside and a tender inside...just they way he likes it. The Southern is on our return to list the next time we are in town (from Thousand Oaks, CA)."

  • "I love taking visitors to the Southern for a couple reasons. Really the first being that I love any excuse to go back there! It's also at a great location right by the Country Music Hall of Fame as well as two blocks away from Broadway and all the bars down there. Which makes it easy to get in a full day of sight seeing after brunch. The food is also great! I always order the Cuban with a side of avocado and even though I'm not a breakfast person I could eat that every morning. Another great thing about The Southern for brunch is they have a small band that plays music which you eat. I had their dinner once and wasn't super impressed, plus it was a little out of my price point. But I'm a big big fan of their brunch!"

  • "Dry aged steak has a great flavor on its own merit. Why hide behind an overuse of salt? Biscuit crackers are fantastic. Side order of asparagus was pricey and only 8 small wimpy spears. Mashed spuds helped to overcome the heavy use of salt on strip steak. Guess they want to increase beer sales."
