Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first but not last trip to the Southern."

  • "What an amazing meal! We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at The Southern. The filet was cooked to perfection. Absolutely loved the accompaniments - mashed potatoes and fried onion straws. The homemade cheddar chive biscuits are dangerously good. Our server was wonderful. Lastly, make sure to try some of their signature cocktails."

  • "Really enjoyed my meal at The Southern. Great food, and the service was top notch. Will be a returning guest for sure."

  • "I have to admit I was disappointed with The Southern. I heard so many great things about this place that I was excited to try it out for a birthday dinner. I have to give credit where it's due: the food was outstanding, but the environment was a distraction, as the restaurant was very loud and this was a late dinner (between 7-8 pm). Unfortunately, because of the noise, this won't be a regular stop for me when I'm choosing a place to eat downtown."

  • "Imsaw waiters and watress eating were guest food was being served. I saw one waiter wipe a plate with his apron and he picked up the guest plates and fries fell off the plate. He then picked up the fries and put back on the plate. The Southern"

  • "My fiance and I went to the Southern for his birthday brunch. Our server, Jordan, was fantastic and answered all the questions we had without fail. We had mimosas, a variety of coffees, and oysters (DELICIOUS DELICIOUS DELICIOUS!!!). My fiance had the Cuban (which he finished off too quickly for me to take a picture) and I had a cup of gumbo (FANTASTIC) and The Highway (chicken and waffles) hot chicken style. Everything was absolutely wonderful and there was a three piece string band up front that set a wonderful mood for the day. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are talking about coming back for a bi-weekly brunch date. SO GOOD!"

  • "Although there isn't a buffet for brunch, this place is absolutely wonderful! Free valet parking, live instrumental music, beautiful atmosphere, great service & delicious food!"

  • "Had anniversary dinner. Treated myself to picking my own steak with chef. Expensive, but worth it."

  • "Took my two college-age grandsons to lunch. They are foodies and don't care for ordinary food. They were blown away by our lunches(we all tasted each other's) there was a mistake in one of the orders, but it was fixed in a reasonable amount of time. We had oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer, that left us drooling for what was next. After marinated pork, steak Benedict, and another New Orleans-type dish, they were still ready for dessert. After a heavenly rhubarb/strawberry shortcake and "red grits" (so good, I'm not going to be a spoiler - you have to go get it) they were Happy as clams (me, too"). This is my second meal here, so it is consistent!"

  • "This is a really nice restaurant with great location and concept. The service and general food quality was lacking from valet and hostess to chef. We stood in line without being greeted as someone in front was making a reservation. Apparently this took two staff to accomplish and two stood, literally, looking down at their feet. A fifth staff arrived and took from the middle of the line persons to be seated. I had the chicken and waffles, a small piece of delicious chicken and half a chewy stale waffle with no flavor. My wife had a egg sandwich, bland and uneventful. Leaving the 3 valets were very slow, not driving cars away when picking up. Instead running back and forth each time. The definition of working hard and not smart."

  • "I was told this place was the spot to go to downtown. The Oysters were VERY small for the price. Being a northerner from Maryland we get oysters at less than a dollar. My steak was good but a cheaper steak at Outback is juicier. It was so noisy I had to shout just to talk to the person I was with. For a place that requires a reservation for so so food and $150 for a meal for 2, I think I'll stick with places like Outback and Chaddar's. For this price I could have enjoyed a nice relaxing, quiet good meal at the Palm."

  • "Whether it is a special occasion or just a special treat for Friday dinner, the Southern is my new favorite! Dependable service, outstanding food, delivered with expertise and timeliness. I love this Nashville gem."

  • "I have tried Southern 3 times and the veggie plate twice and both times I was given a starch that served as most the small plate and was not well cooked....once pearl couscous that was dry and the second time grit cakes (maybe?) that were so dry I wondered if they were actually cornbread. The vegetables on the vegetable plate are very limited. The first time, with the couscous, was corn and some halfed grape tomatoes. The second time, this past Friday night, was 3 okra split in half and some corn. All this comes with a brown purée on the plate that is not tasty. Veggie plates should be veggies and for $24 one would think they could get a veggie plate that would fill them up. The waiter never asks if there is an issue. I won't return."

  • "Get ready for an excellent experience. Very pricey but absolutely worth it! We would go again if in Nashville!"

  • "I'm a regular customer at the southern and this past time the waiter was rude, and served subpar food. The steaks were decent but nowhere near expected quality. The filet was undercooked, while the selection of nudie suit options was poor. Furthermore the dessert was dry and underwhelming."

  • "We enjoyed a great meal, the ribs are excellent, my absolute favortie. The brisket was ok, it was dry and I would not order again. We were fortunate to sit outside, if we had not, the noise level inside would have been intolerable. My husband and I (in our mid-30s) were unable to have a conversation while we waited for our table because it was so loud. I don't know if the acoustics are poor or if the background music is turned up which forces the level of conversation up to talk over the music or a combination of all."

  • " Great steaks and oysters. Nudie bone in ribeye, filet ,T bone and strip steak all sampled and cooked to perfection and had great seasoning and smoke from wood fired grill. The only criticism was was way too loud and could barely hear waitress much less hear conversation."

  • "This place is fantastic for steaks and oysters as the name says! This and Kayne Prime are the best restaurants in Nashville in my opinion. (This one less formal but just as good)"
    Dined on 8/14/2014
  • "Nude Suit steak was possibly one of the worst steaks I have ever eaten. Really thick cut but no flavor and horrible texture. When we looked at the steaks with the chef I felt the marveling was about 50 of what it needed to be . I maybe are 8 ounces of mutual of 24 and my date even less. A standard steak a chain such as Ruths Chris or Flemings would blow this away. So bummed by the entree. Oh and they were 75 bucks each"

  • "Best oysters in Nashville. Everything came out as ordered and cooked to temp."
    Dined on 8/13/2014
  • "Halibut and grit dinner was recommended, it being the last entree out the halibut was over cooked though grits were awesome. Should have sent fish back, but restaurant was very busy and didn't want to wait since most guests were already half way through their meal. I would definitely eat there again, just would not order this item. I will say all other entrees ordered were large portions and very tasty."

  • "I'm sure it's said many times, many ways, this is the perfect spot for catching a great meal before going to the Schermerhorn across the street. The valets are speedy (and free if you eat there), so you don't spend a lot of time getting out of there after the show. As a specialty, the cold-water oysters are outstanding. My wife never liked oysters until trying these, and now she considers The Southern to be her go-to place for them. This all comes with a price, as the post-tip tab for two of us (including appetizers, drinks, salads, entrees and dessert) came to $200. However, the convenience is so great that it's worth it for a special occasion."

  • "The food was pretty tasty. The waiter tried to be helpful and service very good. It was very quiet since we went mid afternoon. Basically a large bar area surrounded with tables so atmosphere could be different when busy. Very upscale, pleasing decor. I'll go with 3 stars ambience, but this could be 4 or 5 depending on what you want. Only a couple issues. Waiter suggested NOT getting south of border tacos and they were out of there meat and 3 for the day. Had a hard time finding much that is real Southern on the daytime menu at a restaurant with this name. Shrimp BLT, which is a Po'boy was good."

  • "While attending a convention in Nashville, my husband asked our hotel manager for a restaurant recommendation. Without hesitation, he said The Southern. The only way we could make a reservation for a small party was through Open Table, however. This frustrated my husband; however, I had used Open Table in the past and was familiar with it and made the reservation. On the afternoon of the day of our dining, I received a phone call from The Southern to say there was an issue with their kitchen and they would only have a limited menu available and wished to know if we still wanted the reservation. I said yes. The service and food was outstanding! It rained torrentially while we were eating, causing us to have dessert. Yum!!!!!!!!!!"

  • "Interesting menu, spacious layout makes this an excellent spot for a breakfast business meeting. The service is attentive and friendly. The location is especially convenient if you are attending a conference at the convention center."
    Dined on 8/11/2014
  • "Quite a busy place that made us feel that they wanted us in and out as quickly as possible. While the food was good (not exceptional) our sides came to the table 10 minutes after the main entree."
    Dined on 8/10/2014
  • "All of my party raved about their entrees. Best double pork chop ever. Don't pass up the bread pudding."
    Dined on 8/10/2014
  • "We started with oysters. They had an outstanding selection of Atlantic and Pacific Northwest varieties. they were fresh and tasty. I'd say The Southern does the best job with oysters in Nashville. Mrs. Ned enjoyed her filet very much and my pork chop was tender, moist and HUGE! There was no room for dessert. The wine list is limited, but there were some notable offerings. Corkage is high at $20. All in all a good dinner, but the waitress seemed in a hurry to move us along."

  • "Enjoyable experience as usual. Great quality food and service. We will definitely dine here again soon, although, I do hope they bring back the duck entree."

  • "A great place for dinner and drinks - but not if you have a business dinner and want to visit. Our table of 4 could not hear across the table. Food and service admirable - just not a quiet dining place."

  • "The noise level is so high you will not be conversing with those you dine with"

  • "My husband enjoyed our first meal in Nashville with some amazing oysters (the fresh horseradish was perfect) and our entrees so relish! Great ambiance and general manager very nice. Waitress seemed a little busy to pay much attention but we understand that happens. Great meal!"

  • "Great food and location! We had a great dinner and the server was friendly. One thing that was a bit off. I asked the waiter for horseradish cream sauce. He said he only had horseradish. I could whip a horseradish cream sauce in about 1 min. Here is a quick recipe for you in case someone else asks for it. 1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup grated fresh horseradish 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper"

  • "We are local to Nashville and I wanted to take my girlfriend out for her birthday with our friends. I made the reservation one month in advance and had been waiting to dine here until we had a special occasion. We work on Broadway and refer people to The Southern on a daily basis. We arrived, sat at the bar, waited for our table, and after ordering appetizers we were informed the grill was broke and were limited to a six item menu. No steak or any other main dishes except grits, barbecue, fish, or chicken fried chicken. No one ever informed us of the grill problem upon arriving and was very disappointed to wait a month to eat chicken fried chicken."

  • "This is our usual spot when going to shows in Nashville - while we would love to try other restaurants in the area, our experiences with the food and service just keep bringing us back. Short walk to the Bridgestone Arena, Ryman Auditorium or Broadway, perfect location and outstanding meals. Yes we are foodies and yes, not easily pleased!"

  • "Yes the fine steakhouse had no grill in service (we were told broken exhaust fan) and steaks were not available. Disappointment probably impacted our overall ratings. Nice ambiance and good happy hour crowd in bar. Non steak entres (fish tacos and shrimp risotto) only OK for price."
