Influenced by his southern background, Taylor uses ingredients from local farmers and sustainable sources for dishes like fried green tomatoes, Johnny cakes with chow chow and Charleston-style crab cakes. The food at the Southern is an interesting journey into homemade southern style comfort dishes with a modern twist. All of our dishes were very flavorful and complemented each other very well. The drinks had punch and were well conceived! We went there on a early Friday evening and we thought we arrived before the bar scene kicked off but when we got there with our son that was not the case. The manager still made us feel welcome and even got us a small table to accommodate a high chair. Thanks for the southern hospitality!!!!

We went for the spicy fried chicken. It was a little too spicy for my tastes and I LOVE spicy food. Everything else was great and I can't wait to try the regular fried chicken.

I really liked all the food, but I made reservations for 6 during a colder April Friday evening and we were sat in the upstairs tent room. It was not as nice as the main dining room, and the temperature was very odd (it was cold but there was a giant heater blasting us with heat). I could, however, definately see how the upstairs would be very cool during warmer months. I would go definately go back.

We went to The Southern yesterday with great anticipation. Maybe it was the buildup, and maybe it was the name, but I was pretty disappointed. I probably shouldn't have trusted "Southern" in Chicago, but I took a chance. The fried green tomatoes were very good, but the gumbo was tasteless and the mac and cheese (which has rave reviews) was just as bad. I used A LOT of hot sauce to give it flavor and reluctantly took the remaining home. My boyfriend had mahi mahi and grits. His food was good, but he said it was nothing to write home about. Sadly, we watched other people devour fried chicken and the entire time we thought, 'we should have just ordered the fried chicken.' Oh well - you want win them all.

My date and I were told about The Southern by a friend who was familiar with the neighborhood. Having lived in Louisiana and being hungry for some authentic southern type food, we decided to give it a try. We ordered some hush puppies, Blackened Mahi with grits, and peel and eat shrimp. Everything tasted sooooo good. The dipping sauce tasted really great. The waiter was very friendly and attentive, but was not over bearing.

They were out of almost every 'speciality' beer on the list which was annoying. Service was good to begin with and then continuted to get worse as the night went on so we left for another bar. Food was good though!

Went on a double-date here on a Tuesday night and sat outside. Awesome atmosphere, great beer selection and good service. The food was super tasty -- our favorite was the blackened mahi mahi. The only negative was that the portions were smaller than we expected so we left still a little hungry. No complaints except for next time we'll get more appetizers.
