Diner Reviews
  • "The Smoking Goat is a hip bistro in a fun room in a hip part of San Diego. Unfortunately, the entrees are often not consistent. On this visit, the duck was very tasty and subtly spiced, but the ribeye steak was barely average tasting with a sauce that added nothing. Too bad."

  • "Good and Not Very Good Balanced themselves out pretty well here. Upon arrival, the 3 people at the host stand seemed shocked that we walked in. Maybe we interrupted? The 3 of us were sat right away & attended to quickly by our server, we were there fairly early (6:15) and basically had most of the dining room to ourselves. We ordered our drinks & starters which all cam out quickly. As we looked at the dinner menu, It is sad to see that they actually do not offer goat! Nor is there a goat smoking a cigarette any where in sight. Pig décor, which I would assume they want goat décor? As it got more crowded service took a lot longer. Our meals were all VERY, VERY good. But the wait to order dessert was VERY, VERY long."

  • "Wonderful and prompt service, and delicious food cooked to our liking. I had the scallops while my boyfriend had the ribeye; we were both very satisfied with how everything came out. Beer selection was great too! Lovely spot for a date night."

  • "We split the duck pâté which was amazing! The beet salad was good although the dressing was a bit too tangy. The steak was great and it came with their fries....fabulous! Overall it was a great dining experience and their wine list was nice too!"

  • "The side dishes and accompaniments are imaginative and delicious. Seasonings are right on. Can't wait to go back to explore the menu in greater depth."

  • "I planned a birthday dinner for a group of 9 women. The restaurant staff were very flexible and the reservation process was easy! They set our table early and we didn't have to wait at all. Between everyone in our groups we tried at least 7 entrees and each was high quality with some of the most flavorful meats I've had! The trout was a particular favorite among the group. We tried every dessert on the menu and each was absolutely delicious. I can easily say that you cannot go wrong with any item on the menu. I've been coming here for a few years and they never disappoint!"

  • "Love the menu selection. The items we ordered were unique and had amazing flavor. We enjoyed the duck pate, ravioli and lamb. It was a slow evening, so we had amazing service from our waiter. He also was very knowledgeable about the wine selection. We are definitely planning a return trip."

  • "We've been here before and this visit was as memorable as the ones before. Our server was the happiest and most positive person ever. She made very good champagne and vine recommendations. The food was as delicious as before. Definitely will be going back there again."

  • "Service was slow to start, took too long for our server to come over. After that it was a good experience, good wine great apps. The pork chop was a bit overcooked and way too firm to cut, felt like I was getting a workout carving it!! We will order something different next time, but overall nice dinner.Consider the Crab Cakes a regular menu option they were delicious and we would order again!!"

  • "We went here early during dinner service on a Saturday. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The wait staff was attentive; the food was very good; and, the decor/ambience was nice. We tried the Mexican crab cake for our appetizer along with the chicken and lamb entrees. Everything was delicious. The plates looked awesome and tasted even better. We will definitely be coming back."

  • "The Smoking Goat was recommended by a trusted friend as the place to go to celebrate my birthday, and it didn't disappoint. The food was excellent -- the pork chop and rib-eye steak were cooked to perfection and the sides (polenta and greens; garlic fries and salad) were delicious. Our server was prompt and courteous. We loved the atmosphere and decor of this neighborhood bistro and will definitely return for more."

  • "We went here for my moms birthday. We were seated right away and the decor is very cool and rustic. We ordered the duck fat truffle fries with mustard aioli which were delicious and addicting. then I had the roasted duck, my wife had the rack of lamb, and my mom had the scallops. All were rich, delicious, big plates with a beautiful presentation. we finished with a crime brûlée which was also big enough to share. I would recommend this place for anyone who wants to have a fancy night out without having to go to the snootier spots of San Diego like la jolla or del mar. It's right in North Park! also loved the tunes they played, lots of the Stones which is always a plus in my book."

  • "We loved our main dishes of duck & chicken. The salad was un-remarkable. Visually lovely, but not well dressed. Service was excellent and the ambience was very comfortable."

  • "It had been mentioned to me by multiple sources that the food is good but grossly over priced. This is the case with all too many restaurants in the San Diego area. Particularly when compared to areas like San Francisco or Austin, which have amazing food scenes, but more appropriately priced. Knowing that, I still wanted to try the Smoking Goat. I have to say that I now concur. I had one friend say that they weren't thrilled about the service they once had, but I found the service to be pleasant and the staff very attentive. The food was pretty good. Seriously, nothing to complain about. Presentation was good and the plate's flavor pairings were complimentary. However, I wouldn't say that there was anything to rave about."

  • "This was my first visit to The Smoking Goat, but I've been wanting to eat there for some time. I'm 100% gluten free, so eating at many restaurants can be challenging, because the wait staff is often clueless about how food is prepared. Not so here, as the server and manager were both incredibly accommodating and knowledgable about the dishes they serve. On top of that, everything that I ordered—Roasted Beet Salad, Rack of Lamb, Creme Brûlée, as well as the wine and coffee—were all exceptional! my date was ever bit as impressed with her meal. I can't wait to dine here again, maybe outside, on their lovely little patio, next time."

  • "This restaurant had been recommended by a friend who experienced good food and service on two occasions. However, on the night we were there, the service was non-existent and they were out of the chicken and trout, two of their recommended dishes. It was a great disappointment and we will not be returning."

  • "Once again Smoking Goat delivers. Our entries were excellent. The menu is very creative. The wine and beer selection s are not extensive but are exceptional. They have both Delirium and La Chouffe. Sems I remember the bubbly by the glass is French and reasonably priced, a good value. I don't know if it was an off night but the desserts have been better on past visits."

  • "Disappointed by very, very limited menu; wine list is decent; food prepared well but not exceptional; servers tried to describe foods adequately but with limited menu, not much variety to select from; decent value for food served"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. We spent a great evening at The Smoking Goat. All of the food was wonderful. We tried the "tartiflette" with brie cheese, potato, and leeks, the blue cheese and arugula salad, and the ribeye with duck fat fries. We had no complaints. We highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food is outstanding, creative and beyond tasty. The service is first rate. The Wine List, could use some 'tweaking' and the $20 corkage is a bit high for this neighborhood. Also the policy of not waiving 'corkage' if another bottle purchased from the 'list' is seriously no bueno! The bench seating is comfortable, but for those across the table, those chairs are more eclectic than comfortable."

  • "Our server Christina was awesome and knowledgeable about the menu. Liked but was not super into the recommended tartiflette appetizer (tasted too potatoey for me) but the escargots app and the main dish I had of scallops with risotto were awesome, especially with the suggested Chardonnay pairing! Their signature dessert (a banana bread pudding thing) was also surprisingly great as I do not normally like banana bread or bread pudding!"

  • "My wife and I went to The Smoking Goat after a movie, and found the overall experience nice. The place is very small (which explains why OpenTable often shows them booked up for the night), as was the menu. That said, the variety of items was good, and everything we ordered was superb. Service was great, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed."

  • "The Smoking Goat is amazing! The ambiance was romantic yet suitable for anyone. The service was fantastic, and very accommodating to my friends who had to wait for my girlfriend and I to arrive (flight delays). The food was unexpectedly $$$$ quality at a reasonable price - incredible from the first bite to the last. The dessert!!! Good grief, one bite took us to another world of flavor! The perfect way to finish a meal. People must not leave before dessert! I had the rib eye, and my girlfriend had the chicken, my friends had the ravioli, and trout. Not one negative thing could be said. Smoking Goat, Bravo! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone! What a gem. I'll be returning without a doubt!"

  • "My husband & I did a date night here after it was recommended by the guy who's room we were renting. We were able to walk, which was nice. It's not super fancy, which was fine by us. Some folks were dressed up, others were more casual. My husband had the arugula salad, and I tried the pear/blue cheese. His was a bit sparse, just kind of stuck on the plate, but the pear salad was delightful. Not sure the pistachio pesto added anything, but it was beautifully plated. We then shared the ravioli, which was fair but not outstanding. Too grainy. Overall, we loved our experience, the waiter was attentive and sweet, and the ambience was fun."

  • "Good food, but like many places in San Diego, they lack a full bar. Service was good. Never had to wait for water refills. All the food was pretty tasty. It's a good spot, second in North Park only to Urban Solace."

  • "I don't know if it was an off night, but the service was lacking. My friend asked for some bread, and they said they don't usually have bread but it shouldnt be a problem. Well my friend had to ask 3 more times and the waiter said he forgot and finally brought it out to us. I had the ribeye and had asked for it medium. It ended up coming out still mooing, which was another disappointment. I had to wait while my friend ate his food for them to bring my ribeye back out. This time it was a little more than medium, but I was starving and didn't want to send it back. It was delicious though. Also, We asked for the wine list and never got it and had to ask another server."

  • "I save this place for special occasions as I'm never disappointed with the food, but it's on the expensive side. We LOVED our soup and salad, both exceptional, and the scallops in lobster risotto. It was so much fun to sit outside on Valentine's Day and watch all the couples."

  • "We brought in a table of 6, close friends, for them it was the first time to experience the Smoking Goat. We had been there a few weeks earlier with a group of 8 and had a great server (forgot her name-short hair, very friendly, outspoken with a "can do anything attitude)- she made it happen for us!! Awesome girl. HOWEVER, we got a different server, his name is on our receipt: Nick. Not friendly, not outgoing, nervous, never asked how we were doing, since we had made reservations for 6 and had to wait for our food for 1 1/2 hour. It finally arrived, but my fries never even arrived and I wanted them with my dinner. Ooops...he forgot . The friends also ordered and they also did not get their fries until we all had finished our dinner."

  • "Everything in the menu was outstanding. Starting from the appetizers, the drinks and not to mention the main course. The crispy chicken is unique and the ribeye was cooked and seasoned like no other."

  • "Hate typing so I'll keep it short. The food and wine is amazing. I had the scallops with risotto. Wife had the Steak. The restaurant is a nice place to dine. Saw some people out on dates. The staff was very friendly and our server was nice and friendly, but a little laid back for "fine" dining. We spent $265 and would have liked a bit more suggestions or wine pairing recommendations from our server. However, I will go back and I would be happy with the same server, this is just a recommendation to make the experience EVEN better. It was a great night out. Also enjoyed the Wine, steak tartare, and brie."

  • "Finally made it to Smoking Goat after several years of wanting to check it out. Had the scallops, ravioli, beet salad and burrata salad. All were fantastic and not over done or too heavy! We thought the wine list had great choices and value. The music was really not fitting (loud country/rock) not what I like or would have expected. Other than that the experience left me wanting to return."

  • "We went to dinner here for my husband's birthday. The food was exceptional, good selection and our server had great suggestions. The duck liver pate was amazing and the pork chop was the best piece of pork I have eaten. Trout was good, but it needed a sauce. Definitely will go back and recommend to others."

  • "We had 8:15 dinner reservations and when we walked in the door, our table was ready....no waiting..The truffle fries and pate were great appetizers and we all had the casoulet (sp) which was probably as good if not better than what we get in France!! Thank you for a great evening!!"

  • "The name of the restaurant really got our attention. A friend recommended The Smoking Goat and we were so happy that she did. This restaurant is a definite neighborhood gem. The food is simply delicious and the service perfect. The desserts are to die for.You should try the apple crisp. We are returning next week with our son and his wife because we feel this restaurant needs to be supported. I highly recommend dining at The Smoking Goat because you will find out what we did and that's the chef really knows what he's doing when preparing and presenting a delectable meal at a respectable cost. ................"
