Diner Reviews
  • "Great for bringing out of town younger guests. Always an energetic vibe with very good food and wide range of choices. Interesting cocktails. Noise level is very high; not recommended for those with hearing issues or prefer quiet conversation. One star off ambience for the bathrooms - love the unisex idea but it smelled pretty bad down there!"

  • "Had a good meal here. Friendly service, good food. Much enjoyed."

  • "One of the good things about the Smith is that the brunch is crowded, even at 10:00, so you aren't eating alone. The omelets were perfectly cooked, and the fresh squeezed orange juice was delicious. The French toast and Eggs Benedict are reportedly fan favorites as well. Be aware that alcohol can't be served until noon."

  • "loved the restaurant, liked the food but it was so unbelievably loud & noisy - we couldnt even start a conversation. we left immediately after the meal and were happy to find some 'silence' on the street."

  • "Have had breakfast, lunch and dinner here and very solid food, and a great menu of choices. This time we went for lunch and had potato chips with blue cheese, seafood salad, and oyster BLT sliders, all very good. The restaurant is nice and open with tables, booths, and group farm tables. Good beer list and wine list. Service was a little slow and table wasn't bussed as we were eating so dishes and glasses kind of piled up...nonetheless, I would recommend for any meal during the day."

  • "loved the food, great service. too bad so noisy for decent conversation. I would recommend this place but for the noise level. energetic is a stupid way to describe the noise level. it was just too noisy! plan on yelling and not hearing 90% of your conversation"
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "food is always fantastic. Hard to hold a conversation without yelling. Actually, you have to yell."

  • "I have been to The Smith for breakfast, lunch, drinks & appetizers and they never disappoint. It is very noisy for lunch though so a bit tough for a business lunch."

  • "The Smith was recommended to me by a family member to eat dinner late after a day out on the town. We had family members running late, and they were super understanding about pushing back the reservation. The waiter was friendly and quick to answer questions about the menu. The food was pretty good but the fries were cold. It wasn't very busy on a Sunday night, but the looked like it could be a fun atmosphere. My cocktail was refreshing, although my father likes dark beer and there were not any choices on the menu in the summer."

  • "I had brunch with my boss and her 91 year old dad. The team there went out of their way to make our experience a great one! I would recommend The Smith - Midtown highly!!!"

  • "Every time we go to the Smith Midtown East, we have a great time. We pretty much always have to wait for the table for about 45 mins so you should be prepared for that - but they have a pretty nice bar to make that time fly. But the wait is always worth it! The food is fantastic - and love the ambience. We've always had great service as well. Overall would definitely recommend!"

  • "a good place to come with friends that being said, it's a bit loud/rowdy since it's full of young people, so if you want an intimate setting this isn't exactly the place for you. the food was good the friend Calamari and watermelon heirloom said was yummy , we were bit disappointed with the mussels as well as the FF, the hot fudge was good. the service was pleasant yet it could be better. Good hangout spot!!"

  • "We dined here before the theater. A good menu with options for just about anyone. Ricotta Gnocchi w/ truffle cream, Cavatelli w/ 10 hour short rib ragu, and Paella were all amazing! White tile walls and floor and wood tables create a nice atmosphere, and servers are very friendly."

  • "I really like the Smith but because it is so, so noisy in there, I only go when I am with a raucous group that can hold its own against the din. It's got really good, fun and well-prepared food that offers something for everyone. If you are not on a date or having a working lunch where intense or focused conversation is required, it's a good pick. Don't pass up the home-made seasoned chips."

  • "The food is always spectacular. Nothing compares to the quality of the food ingredients (the steak may be the best in NYC, especially for the price) and the flavors are always a bit new but classically delicious."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "It's noisy but fun. Great staff, good food. Went for lunch recently and the amount of fries we each got was crazy- I love fries but couldn't finish. My fried oyster slider was disappointing. A tiny oyster in each slider and too sweet sauce. My companion's burger was great."

  • "I have to the midtown location on 2nd Avenue a few times now: for drinks during the week, late brunch, and a first date. The Smith never fails. The service is great (attentive, but not over the top), the food is always good, and the noise level is perfect because of the space. You don't have to yell across the table, but it is vibrant enough to make it comfortable."

  • "My wife and I used Open Table to find a reservation for dinner for our last night in New York. Our reservation was honored immediately. Our server was friendly and attentive, although another server seemed determined to bump me each time he took care of the table next to us. The restaurant caters to a younger clientele, but, as far as the food goes, my wife's salmon was cooked perfectly and my salad was not overwhelmingly big, which I appreciated. All in all, a reasonably priced meal, not easy to find in NYC."

  • "We were a group of friends that picked the Smith for our friends night out. The food is always great. And the service was great too. Our waiter made sure to be attentive to my gluten free needs, and even though his shift was ending he made sure we had everything we needed and also let us know we could use the table when he left. We were very impressed with both the food and the service and we will return soon!!!"

  • "We love The Smith. It's guaranteed to be a great meal and I think their rib eye is among the best steaks you can find in the city. The beer battered green beans are addictive - be warned!!! My wife is a vegetarian and our child is a picky eater but we all leave this restaurant completely satisfied. It's our pick when we are in the mood for a guaranteed great meal. Consistently delivering a high quality dining experience is hard - witness how quickly most places close - but The Smith does it right, every time. You won't be disappointed."

  • "We were there on a Friday evening. We put in reservations online less than a hour ahead and were seated immediately. Yes the place is noisy but its the noise of fun and friends. The salad was fresh, the steak for two savory and side items were excellent. I would go back in a NY minute!"

  • "I really like the space and simplicity of The Smith. I love the decor. Food was alright, nothing exciting. But me and my guest had appetizers. My one quip is that they were a bit small for the $. Service was average. It was noisy which was fine because we weren't looking for quiet. But I don't like that as the night went on, the music got louder and so did the crowd so I had to yell to talk. It's pathetic when restaurants need to do this to "seem like they're happenin". Just stop, you're not a night club. Also, I was hoping for a younger/professional crowd - not the touristy/family kind. I was disappointed but maybe it was just that night."

  • "Sure, I know, how else could you have a great scene. But really, the room walls and floors are so sound reflective everyone needs to yell to be heard above everyone else yelling. Food is average but satisfying."

  • "Never a disappointment! Good food and good times!"

  • "The smith had great food but the volume level was relatively high. I would definitely return but I'll now it's somewhere you'll be speaking/yelling to the person you went with."

  • "If you are a salt lover, The Smith restaurant is for you! I am not a fan of salt. The chef insists on salting the meats and fish. If you don't like salt, the place is fair. If you love salt, this place is great."

  • "Get the Mac & Cheese and the Burger. Very good service."

  • "My date has decided that The Smith is now our regular/fall back when all else fails. The food was excellent, as was the service. We had a variety of options and enjoyed all of it, even grits!"
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "Food is mediocre. If you don't care to hear what your dining partner or waiter is saying to you then go. Otherwise be prepared for the deafening noise level."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "The Smith Midtown has great food and drinks and the service is quick and attentive. The problem is that they squeeze too many diners into the low-ceiling space, and the resulting noise level is just unbearable. It was so loud that my ears actually hurt for a few hours afterwards!"
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "This restaurant was so loud we couldn't hear anything. I stopped in the day before my reservation to speak to a manager about getting a quiet table in the back, and was assured they would accommodate us- we got the noisiest table in the place, between the bar and the front door. Although the hostess was nice about the issue there was nothing they could do to fix the fact that we couldn't hear each other or the waitress."

  • "Great place. It was hard to have a conversation with a party of 8. Good was very good though the drinks were short on alcohol It seemed. Nice neighborhood place"

  • "Took a group of 12 here for a work dinner and it went off without a hitch. Service was very accommodating to everyone's needs and the restaurant made a last minute addition to our reservation."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "Very good food, service and overall ambiance. Definitely will need reservations no matter where you go. Place is loud as noted, but did not take away from our meal. Only issue to note is their alcoholic drinks are pre-mixed and subpar."

  • "Really solid food, solid service. Great experience overall!"

  • "Ate at The Smith for 4th of July. Nothing impressive about the place other than the guys that kept busing the tables. The food had no seasoning and was quite overpriced for such small portions. The drinks though at one time would've been appreciated were heavily laced with alcohol. At one point, I even witnessed the bartender make himself a drink. The table we were seated at was far too small for anyone to be comfortable but all the tables were small."

  • "Went for dinner with a group, we began with drinks and ordered a three appetizers, the drinks came but the appetizers took over 35 minutes to arrive! Then when the meal came, one of the dinners was clearly forgotten, both the server and manager apologized and said it will be out very shortly and when the bill came they still charged for the one meal they forgot ! The quality of the food was good and no one had any complaints in that area. They just need to work on better service with groups."
