Diner Reviews
  • "No need for conversation as it's so noises you can't here yourself think. The food was surprisingly good."

  • "Delicious passion fruit mimosas, beer bettered green beans, warm donuts, and amazing variety of omelets! Definitely plan on coming back to the Smith the next time I am in NYC!!!"

  • "We had the eggs rancheros and grilled chicken salad. Pretty tasty but not standout. It's a handy spot in the East Village to meet for brunch/lunch. Watch out, it can get pretty noisy."

  • "The Smith serves tasty comfort food- standouts are the tuna tartare, the brussel sprouts, the chicken pot pie and mac and cheese. Leave room for dessert!"

  • "Food was excellent - biscuits and gravy was delicious. Service was mediocre at best. Slow to get drinks, and had to closely look over the check as they charged us for a round that was to be included with our entree. Overall a good experience but with so many other brunch placed to try, not sure we will be back."

  • "The Smith is really nothing more than a glorified bar--with an extensive menu. Lots of choices on the menu and a waiter that was appropriately helpful and attentive. The problem really was the food; the best that can be said was that it was okay: the lobster roll was okay, the trout was okay, the dinner size salad with tuna was okay. Be aware that as a "bar," it gets very loud very quickly. Too many other choices in the neighborhood to choose from...."

  • "Went to The Smith for a friend's welcome home dinner. We had a great time, we ordered some of the house wine and I would say that is my only regret of the night. Our waitress was super helpful and patient and the food was awesome!"

  • "Met up with a few friends at The Smith. Lots of action at the bar. The place was perfect for 5 guys getting together for laughs and drinks. Food was fine, it's pretty basic but solid. Waitress was attentive and sweet, very casual atmosphere."

  • "Had the grilled shrimp and grits - amazing. Also the tempura green beans are awesome and they accommodated our large group so nicely and pleasantly. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Although very busy we have always had a pleasant experience, every time we go to The Smiths. We love the eating at the bar or have brunch with friends at the table. We like consistency and they sure deliver it."

  • "3-4th time I've been to the Smith for Brunch and it's always been solid. The food is good, the staff is pleasant, and the atmosphere is nice."

  • "Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the lobster rolls we ordered and by the graciousness of the staff at the front of the house and the wait staff, esp. given the crowds at the door. I would have preferred more savory cocktails -- maybe the sweetness of them is a nod to all the young college types in the house -- but the food made up for it. Would return to try more of the menu when I have an event in the neighborhood. (We were seeing a show at Webster Hall.)"

  • "After waiting about 20 minutes past the time of our reservation, we were shown to what we felt was a very undesirable table in the back of the restaurant in a tight place up close to a bathroom door. Since the restaurant was so incredibly busy, we decided not to request a change. But much to our surprise, we were soon approached by one of the managers who insisted on moving us to a nicer table. And indeed it was! From that point on, our experience at Smith (our 2nd time there) was fabulous! Our waitress, Shana, was friendly and attentive; as was Ben, the manager, and Adam at the front desk. We enjoyed an incredibly delicious brunch and look forward to returning."

  • "Our first time at The Smith, the food was great, service was excellent. It was very loud, I would not recommend for a romantic setting."

  • "Both complimentary still water & Seltzer are served. Lots of interesting brunch & lunch choices."

  • "Everything we ordered was incredible! The potato chips were amazing and so was the duping sauce for the pretzels! There were 6 of us and each entree was mouthwatering, and the s'more dessert was the perfect ending! Make sure you head down to the bathroom, it's worth the trip...even if you don't need to go. Look closely in the knots in the wood on the wall, it's a little "peep hole" and there's a fun little surprise to be seen!!"

  • "Food was great ( must try the bacon scone) but the restaurant needs to develop a better seating algorithm. Every time I've gone, I've had to wait at least an extra 30 min to get seated, and it seemed like they were seating people who got there later before us. Make sure you don't go starving, otherwise you may faint waiting for a table. I gave 2 stars for service only because of this reason, otherwise our waiter was extremely kind and the service was very speedy."

  • "We had made a reservations for 12:15 but found ourselves in the area earlier. I called and spoke to Josh who told me to head on over that they would have a table ready. Walked in at 11:45 and was sat immediately. I love great service and the Smith definitely has that. Waiters were attentive bit not overbearing and the food was delicious!"

  • "What a great restaurant. From the minute we walked in the door to the second we left...loved every minute! We arrived about 15 minutes past our reservation but they were still accommodating. We waited an extra ten minutes before being seated and we got lucky to have a two person corner booth which is a great seat in this lively restaurant. It is crowded and loud (bar is popular) but we didn't mind. The food was excellent and the cocktails were awesome! Hungry Teacher and Blood orange margarita were delicious. The pork chop entree is TO DIE FOR. Get it, you won't be sorry. The burrata appetizer was a bit colder than I would like my cheese but still delightful. I will be back!"

  • "I love the food at The Smith, but I'd recommend the Lincoln Center location over the East Village. I felt very rushed...the waiter took away our bread before our food came, tried to take away our plates while we were still eating, and took my ($14) drink away that still had some left before I could stop him. Needless to say I was a little annoyed"

  • "Went with a group of work colleagues, very fit for purpose. Lively but very good food, an innovative spin on American standards."

  • "This is one of three NY versions of The Smith, and as the others I have been to it offers very good food, service, and value. It does not try to compete with high end NY "Foodie" restaurants, but it does a great job of providing the next level of experience. It is a bit crowded, very noisy, and dinner moves along quickly, but if you want very reliable, very good food, at reasonable prices, this is an excellent bet."

  • "The Smith was packed and almost unbearably noisy for Sunday brunch. There was very little room for the many people waiting for tables -- including us, briefly, although we had reservations. We had the mushroom omlette and the scramble, with mimosas and coffee. The service was pleasant and just attentive enough. The food and drinks were great. The noise made it difficult to think. A great place to go for good food with someone you know well enough to read lips and interpret body language. Not recommended for "getting to know you," unless you want to text each other between bites."

  • "By the time the bus boy came around for the 5th time asking if we were finished with our food, we just said yes. Our server was lovely; I wish he had told the busser to leave us be while we finished our meal! Food is yummy...especially the charred broccoli!"

  • "This is an amazing place for brunch! Always busy and entergetic, amazing cocktail list too! My party had increased in size and they could not fit us in, which I totally understood. We decided to sit at the bar.. Bartender was just blah. As a fellow industry person i was a little taken back by her lack of interest in what was going on around her. The food runner was more interactive and friendly. Nonetheless, everything else was amazing!"

  • "Been here previously and happy to come back with new friends. They enjoyed as much and will definitely return again."

  • "The title said it all. The food was subpar considering the hype the restaurant got. The place was packed and it left me wondering what exactly is the appeal of the restaurant. The Eggs Benedict was bland and the english muffin was soggy. The waiter(Sam) however was lovely."

  • "Bustling as usual, very busy. Had a reservation but had to wait over 20 minutes to be seated. Once seated though they don't rush you out. Ideally our server could be more in our line of contact but he did his best with all the busy tables. Food excellent as usual."

  • "Stopped by with a bunch of friends before a concert at Webster Hall. Good bar snacks and cocktails. Service was good and we got food and drinks pretty quickly."

  • "Great dining experience. I was there with friends from work. It's perfect for a group or just two. Don't bring kids, it's better for adults and dates."

  • "My friends and I have been going to The Smith for years - brunch, lunch, catch-up dinners. I've been to all of the locations in NYC now - so pleased that one opened up in UWS, close to home! There is something for everyone at The Smith - comfort food but with healthy options as well. Recently went to the East Village location with a big group of clients - we ended up being around 14 people. We ordered A LOT of food, and left quite a lot of dessert behind, but there was no sticker shock at the end of the night! The service was fantastic & quick! Friendly staff that was very attentive (and patient with our indecision!) Highly recommend..."

  • "When we arrived to the restaurant we were told that they were delayed and it would take 10 to 15 minutes to give us a table, even if we made a reservation. We waited for 20 minutes and we had to go ask again about our table, because some people without reservation were being seated before us... Conclusion, no need to make a reservation. If you want to wait in the door be patient, there is no enough room and makes the host very difficult to keep track of everybody waiting."

  • "Great staff from host to server to bus boy. Just very friendly, helpful and upbeat people working there. Food was AWESOME! candy bacon and biscuits and gravy were super yummy."

  • "Amazing food amazing service amazing everything. Really appreciated the staff for waiting for our party without giving away our table. It looked crazy busy and they were really calm and polite about the whole thing. Great all around."

  • "Had a nice dinner from apps to dessert. Food was very good and reasonably priced for the city. Choc chip cookies were yummy. Very noisy bug you get used to it I suppose."

  • "Any Smith location provides a solid selection of brews, cocktails and grub. The East Village location is no exception AND it is ridiculously close to Webster Hall, so it was an obvious choice for our pre-concert dinner & drinks. Our reservation was for a party of 5, but we eventually had 2 other friends crowd in and the staff was happy to accommodate -- even though they were extremely busy. We will be back for sure."
