Diner Reviews
  • "I had a friend visiting from out of state and wanted to treat her to a great meal with a spectacular view. I’d brought people to The Shores before and knew it would be the perfect place. She is a vegan so I did a little research and discovered the kitchen was able to accommodation her diet. The rest of us are omnivores and all of us were delighted with our meal. Our server was knowledgeable, charming and she was always tableside at exactly the right moment. I had the Land and Sea which included short rib and a crab cake paired perfectly with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious. In addition to the food, we were seated about 15 minutes before sunset and the view from our table couldn’t have been any lovelier."

  • "Service was a bit slow. I think there were only 3 other tables max when our party of 4 was there. Took a bit long 1/2 hour to get our lunch which was not complicated: 2 turkey sandwhiches, salmon miso soup and a cobb salad. Sandwhiches were a bit skimpy, my crisp skin salmon broth soup excellent and the cobb salad looked good to share for two. Eaten here many times before, table location is great, no rush to leave, view of the ocean and beach is nice. Just don't know why they were a tad slow. Usually they are very efficient. I will return."

  • "The Shores Restaurant is our go-to-spot to wow out-of-town guests. We live in University City so the location is close and easy access. Parking is usually available, although not this time. Our guests loved the view and the meal. The staff are always very pleasant and welcoming."

  • "Our reservation was at 6 but two of my friends were late . So I told the lady at the desk the reason .Then she willingly changed the reservation time to 6:45 before I asked her .Like her ,everybody working there was nice and the service was excellent. Food was also very good. I am sure that my friends who just arrived from Japan on that day enjoyed the first dinner in San Diego."

  • "I usually bring people visiting from out of town to the Shores. The scenic ocean setting and wonderful food has them talking about the place for years afterward."

  • "Very disappointing! We were ignored by the staff at the bar. At dinner, we asked if the sea bass was fresh and was assured that it was. Well it was not! We ordered drinks at the table and they were more expensive than listed on the menu ($14 each instead of $10 each). Not once did our waitress check in on us to see if all was ok. Not the experience one would expect from an expensive restaurant."

  • "We've been to the La Jolla Shores a few times before. The food selection is limited, but inventive, yet still familiar. The view of the beach and waves is great. Unfortunately the service was almost non-existant compared to what we've come to expect. Our waitress was very polite and helpfull, but only when comming by to take our order or serve our food. Not once throughout the entire evening did she or any of the other waiters ask if I needed a refill of water. Also, the chef might have been having an off night as well. We each had ordered the steak. Mine came out as expected, but my wife had ordered her's medium-well, but it arrived close to rare. I'm sure despite this experience we'll go back again, just not anytime soon."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner and enjoyed their mussels, tacos, and blood orange margaritas while enjoying the sunset and the sight og dolphins swimming in the water. Wow, what an evening!!"

  • "We were seated next to a family with 3 very rambunctious very young children. It took away from the serene ambiance of the sunset by the sea. Everyone was very pleasant, welcoming & accomodating. The food was delicious."

  • "My husband and I live in Iowa but whenever we visit my mother in La Jolla we have dinner at The Shores and enjoy the view. On this visit they both had the land and sea combo and I had the scallops. Everything was delicious."

  • "I loved the location, the spanish tile throughout the hotel and restaurant, and the great view of the beach! My husband and I went for a Valentine's Day lunch and really enjoyed ourselves. The food was great and we loved being at the beach and watching the kayakers and people enjoying the surf/sand. Unfortunately, the service was too slow for a weekday lunch - as my husband and I both had to get back to work. If we were on vacation or out to dinner, the service pace would have been fine... so we will go back then!"

  • "This hotel restaurant right on the beach in LaJolla, CA is a gem that is off the beaten track from the host of restaurants found on Prospect Street that are typically frequented. The ambience and setting is very scenic and was accompanied by a superb meal that was served promptly and with style. The menu has a varied assortment of fish dishes that are elegantly prepared and in our party of 4, each had a different dish and announced it was delicious. The menu was priced right for the area and the wine list was very selective and not at all overpriced. A nice find, excellent meal and warm and elegant ambience,"

  • "I found this gem in the early 90s when celebrating a special occasion. After 20 years I had to return to this same restaurant to celebrate yet another special occasion with a larger group. I knew the staff would be great and the food excellent. Everything and everyone lived up to my expectations! I will be back."

  • "My husband and I chose to go back to The Shores since we had our first Valentine Lunch here 25 years ago. The decor is quite dated and more of a mixed crowd. Some casual southern cal beach dressed and some formal for the special VD event. It was a fixed menu and food was good but not great. We brought our own bottle of wine and no corkage fee was charged. The view is typically the best part of the Shores, but it was foggy and socked in this night. If you are a tourist visiting SD or La Jolla, it would be a good choice. If you are a food- you would NOT want to have dinner here."

  • "A classy, tasty dinner at the low end of the price range! Excellent service from all of the staff. Well chosen wine pairings, also quite a bargain price. Dined early enough to get a lovely booth looking at the Shores beach. Seriously, our dinners were $25, with 3 wines for $15 more. The regular offerings were tempting enough for us, although they had both several other entree choices for additional charge and a more expensive wine pairing. Our butterfish entrees were tasty, moist, and thoughtfully (and not over-) sauced. Trio of small desserts were yummy, and you didn't have to choose which one. Would definitely go back again. The dining room is tasteful if a bit dated in decor, I think this place gets overlooked due to its hotel setting."

  • "We had already been to Marine Room the week prior for Restaurant Week and wowed. Our friends hadn't been to The Shores, so we thought we'd take them because we've been several times and had great food and service. This experience was a true letdown. I'd like to detail all the strikes against our experience, but there aren't enough characters allowed to do so, forcing me to be brief. 1. poor communication with the hostess stand. 2. waitress (Kristina) was a nice person, but not competent or experienced to be a server there. 3., 4., 5. no space to type. Suffice to say, I doubt we will return here again. Horrible experience and quite embarrassed we made the suggestion to our friends. They've forgiven us..."

  • "This is a lovely location, easy to get to rather than the craziness of Prospect Place area, and the view is outstanding. The waitstaff were attentive, friendly, excellent in fact. The food was very good and I will definitely back back!"

  • "A group of seven of us were able to get a table reserved at a reasonable time. The wine paring with the courses was awesome and made the experience so much more enjoyable. The staff was GREAT and the view was exquisite! Overall we had a wonderful time and will be going back for other occasions."

  • "it was a great experience being our first time at the Restaurant. It was a fantastic view sitting by the window and feels like we are sitting by the beach. The food and service was excellent. Definitely we would be back."

  • "We took advantage of the restaurant week dinner offered by The Shores restaurant. At $25 per person, it was one of the best deals available, and we already knew we loved The Shores for its view and being walking distance from home. The food was outstanding. We were so pleased with all the flavors. We also had the less expensive of the wine pairings at $15 vs. $25, and that was also outstanding. We got a booth close to the wall of windows overlooking the surf and enjoyed the view. Our server was friendly and competent, but not exceptional. As pleasant as she was, I just couldn't give her the 5 stars I gave the memorable food. Overall, this was an especially enjoyable dinner experience."

  • "It was like eating bad wedding food. The atmosphere was straight out of the 80's."

  • "We were looking for a place where we would feel comfortable bringing our 2 year old granddaughter and yet have finer dining. The Shores fit our bill well. The food was good, although consistently under seasoned. The service was fine, but lacked the personal interactions and polish of better restaurants. The wine list was serviceable. Best of all we felt comfortable with a child with us and still felt we were not eating at a chain restaurant."

  • "I went there during SD restaurant week and it was fabulous. The ambience is great, with a scenic view of the ocean. The three-course meal was fabulous and the service was great. If you really want to enjoy the view, you should request a table by the window in the reservation."

  • "I was informed ahead of time, when the hostess called to confirm my reservation, that the restaurant would only be serving their Restaurant Week menu...which was fine, that was why my group went. We were slightly disappointed with the amount of time it took to get some items, considering it was later in the evening and the restaurant was slowing down and they had a limited menu. However, the server and those who assisted him, were kind and did a good job overall, with very little prompting or requests. The food was good, it was great a location (as was our table) overlooking the ocean, and the overall ambiance was upscale-relaxed. A very nice addition to a cute hotel."

  • "Very nice Restaurant Menu meal with plenty of choices for everyone in our party of 6 to be happy. Always beautiful views and very good service and presentation. High marks and a great value all the way around."

  • "Food was good, well prepared and presented. Quiet night for the restaurant, but service was attentive. Waiter needs to have more knowledge of the menu- didn't know what spices were in the five spice sea bass. I would certainly come back. Parking was convenient, but a little hard to find."

  • "Kelly was our waitress, and as in the past she was WONDERFUL! She knows my husband is gluten-free and always knows what he can eat. She is very professional and has a bubbly and friendly personality. She is a true keeper."

  • "We have never been disappointed at the Shores. Wonderful, tasteful food, scenic excellence, and quietness rarely found in today's restaurant scene. Validated parking is a big plus."

  • "Lovely atmosphere. It's like eating on the beach, but without the sand in your food. My brother and his girlfriend were in town escaping the Midwestern winter so I wanted a place that had a view. Our server offered to bring my brother wine samples so he could decide on what to order. Very nice touch. Ericka, his girlfriend, need the heater and the staff got to that without pause. Another plus. The food was very fresh, well presented, and properly portioned (meaning small). The staff knew the menu so they could help us in making our selections. What blew me away was my french fries and ketchup! Hands down, the best fries I've ever eaten. And the ketchup had to be homemade. It had a texture and flavor that I've never experienced."

  • "Booked for New Years thinking it would be fun and food guaranteed to be good because it is managed by Chef Bernard. I was very disappointed in the entire experience. I am a regular Marine Room customer but was left feeling cheated out of a great night. We were a party of 6 and I felt like I let everyone down on such a special night! There was little to no NYE hoopla. The bar was full after dinner which was relatively rushed and not very generous in portions. The scallop entree came with a measly 3 medium to small scallops, the filet was dry. We were told to park under, but that was full by 7:30. The staff were nice and we tipped more than generous. At over $700 we could have gone to Eddie V's.some friends said it was off the charts and fun!"

  • "This was my first experience at The Shores. My family and I had made our reservation several weeks in advance. We were able to be seated within 10 minutes of our reservation time. The kitchen accommodated my daughter's vegetarian needs. The food was okay overall for our party of 4. Although my son's steak was "the worst steak I've ever had." The service was okay. The band that was performing was good for a hotel band. My observation was that the crowd in the bar area were mostly over 50, not really a place for young people looking for a special evening! We were all surprised that we were not offered a complimentary glass of champagne."

  • "Food great, excellent service. Wasn't informed that they had a price fixed menu for New Year's Eve, at 6.45. Spent $100 more than expected."

  • "The brunch was good, I would go again. However, I would bring my own coffee in a mug. The cost of the Brunch was $48 which should have included coffee or tea in the price. I thought that charging another $8 for a coffee was awful. Really? Coffee is cheap! It would cost them pennies to serve it with the meal."
