Diner Reviews
  • "Descriptions online suggested good vegetarian options, including Vegan, especially on Wednesdays. In reality, this was not the case. Service was slow, inattentive, especially considering low census. Vegetarian selection: excessive oil, uninspired. Considerable room for improvement on many counts, especially considering the inflated prices."

  • "Great atmosphere with superb service. The entire staff does a great job, especailly Lauro. Made sure there was a note on my reservation requesting the seared foie gras which was not on the menu that evening. Always a difficult decision as the menu is amazing, something on there for everyone."

  • "We loved the place. Quiet and romantic. The service and the food was excellent. We would definitely return to try more dishes."

  • "This was our third time and once again the restaurant exceeded our expectations. The menu is always changing and it is not extensive, however, you can always find something that will excite your pallet weather you eat seafood, pasta, poultry or meat! And, save room for dessert specials (and consider ordering the souffles)."

  • "Started with appetizers of foie gras and a pork terrine; both were fabulous. Mains were a tagliatelle dish with meats and duck breast. Also fabulous. Chocolate soufflé, as always, fabulous. Schoolhouse's wine list is well-picked, offering good options for well under $100 a bottle. For one of the best restaurants in the state (country?) this is a huge boon. Elegant and excellent service. Perfect."

  • "Finally tried this hidden gem and am regretting not trying it sooner. Service was excellent with staff awaiting our arrival for early dinner reservation. Our paper menu had our name printed at the top. The menu had a variety of at least one fish, fowl, meat and pasta. The quality was excellent. The service was perfect, not too intrusive. Prices were fair and the overall atmosphere was energetic enough but not too loud. This restaurant does everything right!"

  • "Went with my husband for my birthday - they seated us right next to a table with a young child - started speaking loud and I asked that we be given another table - they were very gracious...the food was wonderful - great attention to detail...the only complaints that we had was that they came around with beautiful bread - it would have been nice if they came back to offer us a second piece - also - it would have been nice to be offered a second cup of coffee as well - with the prices they charge - they should be a bit more generous with these basic things...overall - a very enjoyable evening...pricey - $200 for 2.."

  • "Went with my in-laws for an early dinner. Its a prix fix meal only option but the choices had something for everyone. The menus had our family name at the top - nice personalization. The service was great the food was solid with some bright spots (the roasted veg soup starter was excellent) and we all left happy. It's unusual setting in the old school house by the Norwalk river feels like you found a hidden gem. We will be back."

  • "My only complaint about The Schoolhouse is that seating along the walls can be cozy when all the tables are double. To my pleasure our double had tables of 4 on either side giving us just a little more room. The service is attentive, but friendly, just the way I like it. The bar has unique labels we haven't seen before. The food was fabulous. My fennel fritter appetizer had 4 components that were all perfectly balanced. My husband is a foie gras aficionado and The Schoolhouse did not disappoint. The celery root puree under my fish was amazing and my husband loved his venison entree. Desserts were equally good. Lot too large, not too sweet. The perfect way to end a meal."

  • "Small menu, but well chosen. Friendly, capable waitstaff. From the apps to desert, food was beautifully plated and prepared. Nice wine selection. Pleasant all around experience. Make your reservation well ahead."

  • "I have been to the Schoolhouse many times before and love the food, service and quant nature of the restaurant. The service this time was lovely and the ambiance was great. The food was good but we had to ask for adjustments on both orders and that was disappointing given the high standards I came to expect from Schoolhouse. I am sure it was just a busy night in the kitchen and it will not prevent me from going again."

  • "We have been to this lovely restaurant several times and each time we've had a terrific meal. Only issue is that since this restaurant is so tiny ( part of its charm), you really need to call way ahead for a week end reservation."

  • "Always love being there...a very special treat - will try to dine there on a more regular schedule! The staff is always so warm and welcoming - I feel like I should give each of them a hug! The menu is always unique and I love the specialty cocktails,"

  • "The space is in a one room schoolhouse chicly decorated in browns and white beadboard with tables arranged in a very comfortable layout. Portions are small but packed with layers of flavor. The wait staff is welcoming and unpretentious. The owner made a few rounds and is sharing with food ideas. Eg he told us where he had gotten a particular recipe that we were raving about ...so humble and gracious. We felt as if we were with old friends. The short ribs melted in our mouths. The octopus was the most tender I had ever had. Beet gnocchi with baby cauliflower with other bursts of flavors were ethereal bites of warm, and at the same time refreshing, melodies. We think this restaurant hit all the right notes and are looking forward to returning."

  • "I was impressed with the local, seasonal and fresh food. As a culinary student, I like to support the restaurants who source quality ingredients. But, while we were one of three tables at lunch on a Saturday, it took some time (7 minutes) for the waiter to come over and even offer us water. No bread was offered. Our meals were very tasty (my other party had the bronzini, and I had a creamy polenta), but the plates they were served on were cold, so meals were not piping hot. The portions don't warrant the prices. There could of been some touches that would of made the experience more memorable: LIttle flowers on the tables. Bread. And just even a spoonful more one the portions. Then we might come back and recommend it."

  • "We loved everything from start to finish. Elegant but low key atmosphere. Great foodie restuarant. I had the squab as an entree that was TO.DIE.FOR!!! The soufflé was a must have! We are planning our return!"

  • "It was my birthday and we had never been. It was a delight. The food was excellent, the ambience quite relaxing and unique. The service was quite good but there was a misunderstanding about an entree. The management was great, they rectified the faux pas by not charging for the entree and our desserts! We were more than pleased. I would recommend and will be going back. Perhaps when the weather is nice and try outside dining."

  • "What a treat! From the moment we were greeted at the door by Lauro, till we were helped with our winter coats into the January afternoon, our brunch at the Schoolhouse was truly perfect! The food was excellent, the atmosphere relaxing and yet elegant, and the service most attentive. The French toast and Schoolhouse Benedict are special tasty treats. This is our favorite restaurant, a unique and charming place that offers a special dining experience."

  • "Nestled back by the river behind the train station at Cannondale sits a quaint little schoolhouse just waiting to be discovered....we have eaten here several times and are always pleased with the menu , ambience, and staff. It has been a Sunday treat on more than one occasion to bring guests for brunch after Church. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I was so looking forward to going to The Schoolhouse and am sorry to report how disappointed we were. The place is adorable and busy, good ambiance. Menu is varied and interesting and service is decent. However the food was not up to par. The bread they bring is good, for appetizers, the chestnut soup is awful and the pistaccio fritters not much better. The hanger steak was very good, but not hot enough and the portion very, very small and the sides not plentiful either. The Chocolate souffle was more like a molten cake, not good, only the coffee ice cream on the side was good. On the positive, there is a generous pour to the wines by the glass. Pricey too!"

  • "Lovely spot- we have always enjoyed dining there. This was our first visit for dinner, other times were for weekend lunches when the place was not packed. Since this was a prix fixe vegetarian night, it got our attention. My biggest complaint was the noise level. If you are unlucky enough to be seated next to a table with children (!) and a heli-mother whose voice "projects" you may not enjoy your dinner, no matter how tasty. The restaurant was full, and since it is so small, there's no escaping loud talkers. The food was very special and we enjoyed it- there is hope for us foodie centric vegetarians. The toffee dessert was rather ho hum- almost like a bland muffin. We shall return"

  • "Thursday night pre-fix is fantastic. My boyfriend and I tried two different four course meals and all 8 dishes were amazing. Fresh, creative, flavorful. A wonderful ambiance whether as a special romantic date night or couples night with all your favorite friends. Enjoy!"

  • "We attended a Wednesday offering of a four-course vegetarian meal and everything was spectacular. Elegant presentations, deep flavors interestingly combined, attentive and well-timed service, appropriate price-point. Strongly hope that these vegetarian nights happen on a regular basis--the place was full, so clearly the public interest is there. Thanks, Schoolhouse, for a delightful experience!"
