Diner Reviews
  • "From the moment we walked in Salty Sow was phenomenal. We were a bit early for our reservation and they accommodated us politely, quickly and had us seated within minutes. Our server was great. He was friendly, offered us drinks and had suggestions for everyone in our party if we had any questions. We started with the charcuterie and had plenty for the group of four, not small and not overwhelming. The food was perfect everything ordered was absolutely wonderful. We left feeling great and everyone enjoyed themselves and their meal. Great time."

  • "Salty Sow was great! This was our first time there and everyone in our party absolutely loved what they got- slow roasted beef, crispy chicken thighs, bacon wrapped pork filets, petite bone in filets. We also got there early enough to enjoy some appetizers and drinks at happy hour prices. The food was great and such a cool building. Will definitely go back! Make reservations though- we had a 5:30 reservation and heard them tell people in front of us the wait was 1.5 hours! "

  • "The Salty Sow is a nice little spot with a good balance of inside/outside seating. Inventive menu, decent drinks selection and attentive service. It has a very relaxed vibe that provides for a nice evening out."

  • "Best restaurant in Austin, hands down. Don't bother if you're vegetarian but the meat entrees are heavenly."

  • "This place is the best ever. Everything is great. Everything. Just try everything on the menu. It's also a fun place with a cool design and great feel, and it's hip without being pretentious or gimicky."

  • "We have enjoyed salty sow in the past but hadn't been there for a year or so and were severely disappointed. The once great cocktail selection has been reduced to overly sweet margaritas and sangria. The food was greasy and flavorless and some of the dishes were composed with combinations that just didn't work flavorwise or texturally. The fish they were using seemed poor quality. They were kind enough to take the dishes we were most disappointed with off our bill but I never intend to return to what was once a delicious and creative restaurant and is now just overpriced mediocre food."

  • "Despite the fact that the duck confetti was delish, our romantic dinner visiting out of town was not exceptional. I found a hair on our cheese platter. The Manager promised to bring a whole new platter. After 15 min they only brought a salty piece of salmon it was not edible. After we asked for the cheese platter they were to replace. We waited another 15 min to receive a non complete platter."

  • "This was our first visit. We tried the Bone Marrow app. First time to try this anywhere. It was good. My companion and I just had a hard time getting past what we were eating. Glad we tried it but probably never again. The organic beets were great. As were our entrees - crispy chicken and beef shoulder. Simply excellent. The waitress was helpful making suggestions but by 9:00pm or so we started feeling very rushed even though they didn't close until 10:00pm. On our way out at 9:30 we asked another employee when they closed. When he told us 10:00 we were perplexed why our waitress was rushing us out the door. Otherwise it was a pretty good dining experience. We will probably go back."

  • "Went on a rainy night so restaurant wasn't crowded. Server was friendly but service was slow. Can understand slower service with food as it takes time to prepare but have problems with slow bar service. Server was knowledgeable and helpful and answered all questions concerning menu items. My impression is that there were not enough servers on duty. Food was very good and charcuterie plate was excellent. Would definitely recommend trying this restaurant for the food."

  • "We sat at a table in the back, which is very casual. Everything we ordered was wonderful, but my favorite was the Yukon Gold mashed potatoes with gravy. They reminded me of Thanksgiving at Grandmas!"

  • "We loved our first experience at The Salty Sow. Our waiter was awesome and made some great suggestions. For example he suggested the Budino when we were trying to order the creme brulee with the reasoning that you can get creme brulee anywhere else but you can't get the Budino dessert. It came out and was delicious. He checked on us to make sure we were satisfied and also was very friendly. The food was excellent! Everything came out hot and had a beautiful presentation. The menu was very well rounded and offered a little bit of everything. We will definitely be stopping by again!"

  • "Overpriced, but a great drink menu for people who drink (I don't, but they looked intriguing). Food is just okay. Best thing was the chicken thighs!"

  • "The beef shoulder entree was amazing. They have a good selection of specialty cocktails, the sangria is a white sangria and was light and sweet. I shared the truffle oil deviled eggs as an appetizer and like them, although the truffle oil is strong."

  • "The duck fat fries and cheese fritters were delicious but the redfish and pork belly were dry and overcooked. Our service was great but it was so loud we had trouble holding a conversation."

  • "We go every Sunday night and thoroughly enjoy the Charcuterie, duck fat fries, and the crispy Brussels sprout salad regularly. Every piece of meat is carefully crafted to excellent standards and presentation is always pleasing. The Specials menu adds the variety you need to make this a great regular in your restaurant rotation."

  • "Whatever you are doing and head to Salty Sow. We almost didn't make it since our plane arrived late. I'm so glad we did! Although there was a bit of a wait (it was a Friday evening, so it's to be expected), the place was amazing. We enjoyed amazing cocktails while we people watched. Once we were seated, our waitress did an amazing job reviewing the menu and our options. We decided to start with an appetizer, a salmon pastrami dish… YUM!! Followed by an amazing dinner, and yes.. we even had dessert! Sweet Cream cake and nutmeg ice cream…. It's worth visiting Austin again just to experience the Salty Sow."

  • "Making a reservation for a Saturday night at Salty Sow is quite a feat. I finally resolved to reserve early in the week and was able to get a table for two in the front room. While the noise level is vibrant there as well, it is much more intimate than the bar in the back. This place is lively and energetic. The service is always excellent and this visit was no exception. My redfish was perfect and the portion quite large, which I didn't expect. The duck fat fries are sinfully delicious and my husband's pork belly was terrific, probably what many people come here for. Our wine was good and the whole night was quite satisfying!"

  • "This place is great for a date or for a visit with a friend. The noise level isn't too bad, and the décor is beautiful. It is a bit small, so accommodating a group might be difficult without a reservation. Reservations are strongly suggested, or go early when they first open. The food is delicious, especially the appetizers! I keep wanting to try the desserts, but the food is so good I'm always full before I get there :) Happy hour is wonderful!"

  • "Great food, good service, not too noisy, especially as we had a table in the corner. A transformer across the street blew out early in the evening, but they called all reservations and let us now, in case we wanted to change -- which I thought was very good of them. We went anyhow, and the lights stayed on until dessert, which was delightfully served by candlelight. Dessert -- the day's special -- was a bit heavy, but the rest of dinner was delicious. Highly recommend the beef shoulder, the chicken thighs, and the outstanding blackened redfish."

  • "Great Happy Hour! Wonderful appetizers, salads and main courses! We want to go back and try more items on their menu. This place will be on our short list for awhile, it's really nice that it is located within walking distance to UT baseball and softball."

  • "This is one of my go to places in Austin. Food is excellent! Service has almost always been prompt, friendly and reliable. Drinks are inspired and tasty as well. Unlike many other restaurants in Austin of a similar caliber, I rarely encounter a wait for a table. However, they do take reservations as well."

  • "My husband and I have taken our 2 teenage girls to Salty Sow at least 5 times in the last few months. We absolutely love this place. The food is out of this world, just yummy and delicious every single time. We were running a little late for our reservation, yet the sweet girl at the front was extremely understanding and our table was ready for us when we finally arrived - and it was the best table in the house! The service is consistent - this last time our waitress was excellent, but very busy so we waited to order for quite a while, and waited on water refills for quite a while as well She wasn't very descriptive with the menu - we like details before we order, but nevertheless the food spoke for itself and wasn't a disappointment."

  • "The hype surrounding the Brussels sprouts here is completely deserved!"

  • "Took over 4 minutes for initial greet. Server was brutish, seemingly untrained, gruff and robotic. Surprising how many joints in town lag behind on the service aspect (don't take it seriously) while the food is soaring to new heights all over town. All items (3 courses, 13 food and beverage items) were dropped on the table almost out of arm's reach and with no explanation as to what was on the plate. Some service people struggled even to make eye contact. Smiles? Not this night. There were consistent timing problems throughout the experience. Although we were seated right away, we were sat at an unset table. The hostess proceeded to set the other open table next to us without giving us a napkin and silver. Where is the professionalism?"

  • "We were visiting from out of town and I had found this restaurant on yelp and a few other sites. We told a few locals in Austin that we would be dining there on our last night and we kept getting the same response..."woow" It totally lived up to the impression we had of it. The food was absolutely delicious and the service and atmosphere were wonderful. Next time I'm in Austin I'll be back. I got the beef shoulder and I'd recommend it to anyone...so delicious and tender!"

  • "My wife and I split 3 appetizers and 2 entrees and it was a great meal. Best apps: Oyster fritters + beet salad. Get them both. Dissapointing: The fries w/ egg. Sounds better than it turned out. Entree: Pork belly was stellar and chicken wings were good. We'll be back, great for a date."

  • "The brussel sprouts fried in duck fat are amazingly crispy and tasty. The pork filet was cooked perfectly. Came out very moist. The sweet potato purée was so smooth and with good flavor. We have been here five times and have never been disappointed. They also have a good happy hour"

  • "We (two of us) went before a show and this must be common because the waiter asked us right up front if this might be the case or if we might have another issue that would make it necessary for us to be done by a certain time. We put our selves in his hands and relaxed for the remainder of the fabulous meal. The happy hour was a fun surprise, the food excellent and when there was a small issue with the dessert it was handled promptly by the waiter first and then the manager. We were in our seats, fully satisfied by show time. I will be going there again and bringing other friends and making a reservation to assure a place at the table."

  • "Don't let the unusual things on the menu scare you away- it's all SOOO good! We did order some of the more 'safe' items on the menu- but everything was so fabulous that I have a feeling they don't serve anything there that doesn't taste fantastic. Next time I plan to be a little more adventurous and try something new. We had the brussel sprouts as an appetizer, the blackened redfish, the bacon wrapped filet, collard green, and green chili grits- EXCELLENT. This place is a must try. Service- drinks- foods- everything- we will be back. Make reservations- even if you are going early- even if you are a small group- it is a hot spot for sure."

  • "An open kitchen in any restaurant gets high marks from this lass. The food was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Our server was perfect...not inattentive and not in-your-face...just right. She was also very knowledgeable about the food and the drinks. The cocktails were de-LISH!!!"

  • "The food was great. The happy hour specials were enticing and we had a well-versed server that enjoyed the craft in the kitchen and at the bar. The predominance of an egg on the dishes, to me, was a bit much. But the use of pork in so many different facets was unique and thought-provoking...not to mention delicious."
