Diner Reviews
  • "Picked the Salty Sow to celebrate our seven year anniversary. I stated in the OpenTable notes that we prefer a low traffic table away from the kitchen and they seated us at a perfect table for two in a cozy spot. Dinner lows: the AC vent had a direct shot at my neck so we adjusted the table and it was fine. And one plate we ordered was a bit too salty but the waiter happily took our feedback to the kitchen for future reference. Dinner highs: Hard to order when you want one of everything from the menu. And not just the food, the drink choices are phenomenal too. Great portion sizes, perfect temperatures, plates present well. And every recommendation we asked for was met with a genuine response from the waiter. Excellent experience."

  • "We wanted to love this place. It came highly recommended by my sister, who lives in Austin. The duck fat fries were not as flavorful as we had hoped for. We actually asked for ketchup? I don't ever think that's a good sign. The pork belly was delicious but the collard greens it sat on were too bitter for my taste. I LOVE balsamic vinegar, but it just didn't taste right. My husband's beef shoulder was yummy, but nothing to write home about. The highlight of the meal was the side of crispy brussels sprout leaves. We polished that off quickly and could have eaten more. Because we weren't blown away, we didn't get dessert. Service was good. The restaurant has a great vibe and could be romantic, but it is WAY too loud."

  • "The food was beyond amazing. We had the happy hour rosemary chicken and the beef shoulder. Both entrees left us in a food coma with a big smile on our faces. We also then had the banana beignets and I must be honest, that was the best dessert I have had in Austin."

  • "The Salty Sow provides an awesome twist to classic southern down home food. Each offering, from the appetizers through dessert, has a little unusual surprise to make the food interesting. The mild taste of horseradish in the deviled eggs, the salty pork tenderloin on sweet potatoes and the molasses drizzled over bananas foster beignets with ginger ice cream.......oh my gosh!! We tried some of everything and not one thing was disappointing. A great place to find unique dishes :)"

  • "The decor is terrific and the staff were all attentive and polite. I think the next time I go, I may just skip the entrees and eat more of the appetizers. Do not make the mistake of not getting the chicken liver mousse. It has to be the best thing on the menu. The entrees were good, but not on the level I was expecting. I felt the duck was over cooked and the beef shoulder was regular pot roast, but the flavors were great. The banana foster beignets made a very unique and delicious dessert. Think fried banana pudding, but not. The biggest down-side were the other patrons wearing shorts and t-shirts. It's a nice place where you can easily spend over $200 if you are getting drinks, so you should be an adult and dress the part."

  • "Amazing place with some good character. Food was awesome starting with the pork belly and duck fat fries. Finished off the meal with bone in filets and bananas foster beignet. Everything was great."

  • "Salty Sow is a trendy place to go with friends and have a great time. The food is good, the service is adequate, and the atmosphere bustling. However, there were some drawbacks. First, the $8 drinks were way too small. The glasses were small to begin with, and on top of that, they were filled with 3 large square ice cubes or a single monster ice cube that displaced over 50% of the glass volume (I tested it by pulling the ice cube out), so you're not getting much for that $8. Second, my dinner was served in a beat up stainless cooking pan. What??? Why??? It wasn't cooked it the pan, and the pan didn't add any character. Also, they could use real napkins instead of the dish towels they have. A little too kitschy, but overall good."

  • "Creative menu with reasonable prices. Great tasting appetizers."

  • "Had the frys in duck fat and bone marrow appetizers. Both are good for the amount of money paid but there not cuisine. Great place for the money and a great neighborhood restaurant that's not a dive but casual. Pork shoulder was awesome!!"

  • "We ordered a lot of items across the menu and found everything very flavorful, creatively prepared and consistently tasty. Knowledgeable waiter who helped guide our choices. Good for a special evening with friends or just a quiet evening for a party of two."

  • "The only regret I have is that I was unable to eat more. The more I ate, the more I wanted to order other dishes to enjoy as well. Our server was attentive and informative. She helped us pick out some great dishes."

  • "The fried chicken was moist, should have been awesome, but I could have done without that soaking liquid."

  • "The items on the menu at Salty Sow will be different from your average restaurant, however, all of the items are delicious. Just be prepared to pay a bit more than normal. Most meals are ~$20, but portions are neither large or small"

  • "I recommend the Mr Shaw for a drink, if you like lime in your drink, you will like Mr Shaw. Food was great, the price of the food was great. Only recommendation is for the waiting staff to ask if the table wants anything else before bringing the check, it is a big turnoff for me when waiters do this. Other than that, not a very long wait for food. Good place."

  • "Salty Sow you were amazing to say the least; I never wanted to leave you. If you were an actual woman, my girlfriend woudl have some serious competition. One of the best meals I've had in a while. That salmon rillette was unreal. Those crispy brussel sprouts were like crack. The beef shoulder was ridic! Never thought I'd have a pot roast style dish better than my grandma's, but you have managed to achieve that status of perfection. And a freakin cocktail flight? You kidding me over here!? That was so badass! Thank you for a wonderful dining experience for my girlfriend and I."

  • "This is the second time we have been to this place and though the menu is small we were not disappointed. The cocktails are fresh and inventive, the plate selections range from pork to beef to chicken to seafood and the desserts are just amazing. We had our 7 month old and 5 year old with us and it was great. They don't have high chairs available here so be sure to request a banquette so you can place a child seat on the booth side."

  • "Been here a couple of times. They appear and seem to think they are all that. Had the duck and beef tenderloin both were average. The egg app is good. Food prices not that bad but the drink prices are very high. If I am going to spend $100 on dinner I would go someplace else"

  • "We were brought to the table outside with lot traffic. Not good. I asked and luckily there nice seating inside. Food that I ordered was not what I was expecting. While ordered Pork Belly, lot fatty part. What my wife ordered was Pork Shoulder - little over cooked. I will come back again but dont expect that."

  • "We had such a fabulous experience. It was a small birthday dinner for my husband who doesn't like to try new things. He loved it! The service was amazing they gave us some champaign for a birthday toast-so thoughtful! The food was so good we all ended up sampling each other's food and there wasn't a bad dish in the bunch. This might be our new go-to restaurant - so Austin and tons of variety!"

  • "I don't normally write reviews, but after this experience I felt like I really needed to share how wonderful this place is! The food is EXCELLENT! Very reasonably priced too for the quality. The service was a little slow to start out, but I think our waitress got slammed with a bunch of tables all at once. She was very nice & extremely attentive once things settled down. I would definitely suggest making reservations. We went on a Wednesday & it was very packed. I highly recommend the fried tomatoes, brussel sprout Caesar salad & the chicken thighs!"

  • "My girlfriend and I have been passing by the Salty Sow for quite some time now. We finally decided to stop by and try it out and we were not disappointed at all!! I got the slow-cooked beef shoudler served with veggies and mashed potatoes...TO. DIE. FOR. The drinks were very good and not too pricey. Overall, we had a great experience and will be returning."

  • "As recent Paleo converts, we're always looking for Paleo-friendly dining spots. Salty Sow qualifies, and every meal we've had there has been superb. This one featured the charcuterie plate (excellent), the beef medallions and the pork filet (both perfectly done) as well as collard greens and brussels sprouts. Service can be lackadaisical, but it doesn't detract from the kitchen's perfection. Good stuff!!"

  • "The food is beyond amazing. Happy hour selection and prices were great. We were seated in the back building which was small and noisy (although seemed quieter and less cramped than the front), but comfortable. The only negative, which is minimal, is that the waitstaff would congregate around the bar and service area and were pretty loud. They seemed to be very comfortable and happy working there, so that's a plus. The service was more casual and less attentive for that reason, though. The food more than made up for any discomfort."

  • "If you love pork this is the place for you. I had the bacon wrapped pork filet minon and it was amazingly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. They have other dishes that are not pork but why would you want that? My only complaint is that they sat us next to the door and we kept having flies buzz around us. Besides that it was a great experience."
    Dined on 5/29/2014
  • "The service both times where very slow! Takes a while for someone to greet us and also to get drinks out. As a restaurant manager myself I'd work on greet times and drink times! I'm okay with waiting for food this good but it shouldn't take over 5 mins to get someone to greet us. We asked for water for our hungry baby and I had to send my husband to the bar because she was taking too long."

  • "I really enjoyed this restaurant. They had wonderful happy hour specials and they have happy hour every day! Our waiter was friendly and the food/drinks we're very tasty. The menu items were also very original. I saw things I haven't seen anywhere else! I'll definitely go back!"

  • "Good quality off the beaten path food and hand crafted cocktails. Gets crowded, make an Open Table reservation. $5 happy hour food/$2 off drinks until 6:30. Parmesan dusted eggplant fries are great. "

  • "While the food was great, our server was just alright, they were not in the best mood and did not do a good job of refilling drinks or checking on us. We sat on their covered/enclosed patio. It is also extremely hard to enjoy our delicious food when you are constantly swatting away flies. I have been here several times and have had really good experiences, so I will definitely return. This time everything was not on par with previous visits. "

  • "Excellent food, everything we had was delicious. We came with friends and loved the place. We shared two appetizers, each had an entree and shared dessert, with cocktails and a bottle of wine for less than $45 per person. Outstanding ! We will return for sure, maybe to try the happy hour which looks fab. "

  • " The redfish filet, topped with crab and oyster, and a lemon/butter sauce (i am not at all doing the sauce justice. It was so much more than butter/lemon) was fantabulous. It was the best redfish I've eaten. The fish was perfectly prepared...a bit of a pan sear on outside, and wonderfully flakey meat. The crab and oyster were enough to complement the fish, but let the fish remain the star of the dish. We had the flourless chocolat cake, which was amazing. This was our first visit. We will definitely return...frequently! The service was great, appropriately responsive but never intrusive."
