Diner Reviews
  • "This is the second time I've dined here. I found the service to be ok, but was better the first time. The server was distant and seemingly interested in our overall experience. Food was excellent. It got a bit noisy as it filled up. I'd go again, but given the price tag the service should be stepped up a bit."

  • "My husband, 7-yo son and I dined at the Ryland Inn for the first time last Friday night. We two had the tasting menus with pairings, and our son chose salad, gnocchi, & venison - all of which were delicious. The tasting menu was terrific, with our favorite course one that wasn't even on the menu: hard to describe, but a sort of spring-peas-&-carrots dessert - really fabulous. Service was excellent and not too overbearing, plus all the servers were very gracious with our son. (He is always exceedingly well behaved in restaurants, but of course at new places the staff don't know that, so the sight of him can cause some dread!) I was impressed by some unique & tasty ideas, e.g. powdered foie gras. We'll definitely be going back."

  • "Excellent food. Limited menu for entrees. Pricey but nice for a special occasion. I was surprised by the noise level. I have a hearing issue and background noise can make it very difficult for me to hear. The noise level was so high that, though I was sitting next to my wife, it was very difficult to hear. Given the prices, I would have expected a more intimate ambience."

  • "Some places have intimidating hostesses. Not here! Ryland finds a unique balance: class without stuffiness. Richard, our waiter, was warm but always professional And while the decor is crisp and wine list doesn't make you faint from the prices, there are really only two stars at Ryland. This first is the guest and the second is the food. The food is never presented as more important than those who have come to enjoy it. The tuna was so fresh, the short ribs juicy, the coffee crust on the venison so original in pairing with the endive. My wife's fork strayed to steal a bite of chicken from our daughter's plate - "I've never tasted anything this tender!" Given the choice to go anywhere, this is where we go!"

  • "Despite now living in the suburbs my wife and I are no amateurs when it comes to fine dining, she having lived in NY for 11 years and I for 4. The Ryland Inn was one of the best dining experiences either one of us has had and is unquestionably the best value we have ever see in a tasting menu. Chef Craig could easily be charging 50% more for this gem. Including amuse bouche and the 3 (!) dessert courses there were a total of 10 courses, almost all of which were 5 stars. Tuna tartar with shaved fois gras was a special highlight, as were the perfectly prepared duck and the surprisingly outstanding mackerel. I cannot wait to return."

  • "We we to the Ryland Inn for our anniversary, and will likely return for other special occasions. We went with the chefs tasting menu with the wine pairings, and would highly recommend it. The courses were creative and delicious. Service was very good, but a touch off of 3 star quality, which we actually found a bit more relaxing."

  • "We all wondered whether the new Ryland Inn could match up to the original. Fear not. It is better than before and is operated by people who really know and appreciate the restaurant business. Their staff is professional, charming and willing to please and will make suggestions that you can enjoy and appreciate. We had 4 meals among us and each one was thrilled with our selection. We had halibut, salmon, chicken and short ribs and there was not a crumb left. The wine list is great as were the appetizers and desserts. You will love the ambience and the special attention given to every diner."

  • "The restaurant has an enticing and ever changing menu. Service is courteous and knowledgeable....all questions about the menu were answered to our satisfaction. This was our second visit since the restaurant has reopened and we would definitely go again. We had a lovely evening."

  • "We were very excited to try the "new" Ryland Inn, but nervous that it wouldn't rise to the same raraified level of the original. We shouldn't have worried. It s still an elite "destination restaurant." Other than the mildly pushy up-sell on the chef's tasting menu, service, menu, food preparation, ambiance, and wine list all were as good as it gets. The sommelier seems slightly challenged, but only slightly."

  • "If you want to feel sated, pampered & completely welcomed by a top-notch staff (from valet to hostess to maitre'd to waiters to sommelier), this is the place to go. Our party of 5 had 2 special requests (85th birthday and gluten free choices) & everything was beautifully executed from start to finish. We were led to a spacious table right in front of the fireplace. The food & wine recommendations were outstanding. Of special note: (salads) pear/arugula & market vegetable; (small dishes) the scallops/polenta & truffle risotto; (entrees) Venison & halibut. Desserts were fabulous & my mother-in-law's came out with a candle & singing for her birthday without us even giving a reminder. It is expensive & worth every penny! Amazing ambiance, too."

  • "The Ryland Inn is good but could and should be better. The atmosphere, particularly in the dining area near the bar, is lacking. The lighting is harsh. The service is uneven though everyone seems to be trying. Been twice to this new version and miss the old more than ever."

  • "The service was really phenomenal. Very attentive, knowledgeable staff. Innovative dishes that mostly hit the mark. Will be back."

  • "From the sweetbreads amuse bouche to the beignet + ice cream dessert!, the food and its presentation at Ryland Inn are well-nigh perfect. In some ways, the first and second courses even exceed the main courses in distinction of taste: try the crudo. My tuna main course was perfectly prepared; even chicken, ordered by a friend, was a happy choice. The service is perfect--helpful, never over-bearing. The Ryland Inn is equal to the a Frog and the Peach and Ninety Acres."

  • "This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. My fiancee and I had the Chef's tasting menu and it was incredible. 7 small and very original dishes. Plenty of food. The Ryland has the best wine list I've ever seen. They also offer a service where you can buy very expensive wines by the glass to taste. This way you can try a Grand Cru for example and not pay $400 for the whole bottle. You will want to drink the bottle anyway but its a great service. Highly Recommended."

  • "We knew this place years ago, under the old ownership and it was a very special place that we loved visiting......sublime food and ambiance. We were dying to try it now with the new ownership and new chef. It was deeply disappointing. It was my husband's 64 birthday and this was a treat for both of us. Well, before we even walked in, we heard very loud, terribly music. Uh oh. Not good. The decor was very ordinary, the noise level high, but we were anxious for our first taste of the food. There wasn't one dish that was special out different. I make better meals at home. The service was excellent however, the staff friendly, efficient, helpful, pleasant and friendly. But we go for the food, and we won't be going back. And still expensive."

  • "The new Ryland Inn is very impressive looking. The food was just OK. The prices way to high. Foie Gras appetizer $21.00 for a quarter size piece. and it was served on the cool side.Sorry"

  • "A wonderful experience for a romantic/special occasion. The cocktail bar was fabulous. The wait staff was very attentive without being intrusive. The food was delicious. Chef Anthony and his staff should be proud of the quality restaurant they have at the Ryland Inn."

  • "The bar is really great and the bartenders were very knowledgeable. The food was fantastic. My only knock is that the waiter seemed to be very pushy with wanting us to order more than we really wanted or needed. Otherwise a fantastic experience beginning to end."

  • "The food was marvelous, the service was outstanding......... but the noise level was unbearable ! It was like being at a wedding - you literally had to shout to be heard across the table. We would go back, but only if they did something to mitigate the noise."

  • "Diners remorse! Our small group of 5 were very disappointed with our experience with the new Ryland Inn. We re-located to Virginia and wanted to have a special dinner at the Ryland on our recent trip to NJ. We were regular customers when we lived in NJ years ago. Although the property and buildings were magnificent and excellent service...., the rest of our dining experience was very poor. We selected the tasting menu (based on past experience) for our group and can only describe the food as bad, especially for the price $99/person. Additionally, we chose the tasting menu due to the limited a'la carte menu. Our group all agreed we would not be visiting/recommending the Ryland Inn again."

  • "The food is good but certainly not worth the price. Portions are small and service is inconsistent. After hearing about what a great place this is we were very disappointed. We drove 60 miles from Bergen County to the Ryland Inn and the food was no comparison to places like Cafe Panache and Seasonal Local Kitchen in Ramsey."

  • "This is a very special New Jersey restaurant that has resurfaced as one of the best in New Jersey. The service was very good and the food excellent!"

  • "The Ryland's previous iteration was fantastic. While this most recent edition is not as posh, it's still very good. They appear to be slowly increasing the entries in the wine list and the menu has expanded as well. the portions are a bit small, but of very high quality."

  • "The ambiance is always awesome, the bar and bartenders are always fun and exciting and the service is always top notch. The food the first time we went was especially good over the 2012 holiday season. The second time we went the food was not quite as good in the spring of 2013. This most recent visit in January 2014 the food was a mjor disappointment for all four who attended from the appetizers all the way through dessert. There are several other restaurant choices central New Jersey where the food is almost guaranteed to be better. Especially in this price range."

  • "we did the 7 course tasting menu with special wine pairing. The food and service was outstanding. Beautifully presented and amazing creations such as white chocolate cauliflower pudding with oysters. Enjoyed sitting by the fire. The wines were very nice but perhaps not worth the extra money for the premium selection as they really were not that expensive wines. Very pricey but worth it for a special occasion."

  • "Everything with the exception of our waiter met our expectations. The waiter was pretentious and adamant that a particular item was not served. We accepted his word, even though we had been there twice before. Of course when the dessert menu came, we noticed the item we had been looking for was still on the menu. I have to serve the other staff were excellent."

  • "We went back for the second time in 6 months, this time to celebrate my husband's birthday. The Inn is very welcoming and was tastefully decorated for the holidays. The service was outstanding and the waiter explained everything on the menu to us. He was also helpful pairing the wine with the dinner. I highly recommend the Ryland Inn."

  • "The octopus appetizer was outstanding and everything else was very good. We also had the scallops appetizer, the venison, the strip steak, and the panna cotta dessert. Dishes were beautiful. Service was excellent. The restaurant is beautiful and comfortable. Great place for a special occasion."

  • "Any foodie in New Jersey who has not tried the Ryland Inn is missing out on a special treat. House in a former stagecoach stop, the Ryland Inn is a farm-to-table experience, focusing on fresh local food prepared with the utmost of care with interesting and innovative combinations of flavors. I could not find fault with any dish that we tried, and all of them had us exclaiming with delight. The menu changes seasonally, so check it out online before you go. The service is impeccable. Our servers were there when we wanted or needed them and unobtrusive when we did not. It was a wonderful experience all the way around and a truly special night for celebrating a special occasion."

  • "We came for a birthday celebration on a nasty, snowy night and we were welcomed warmly. The service was excellent; there was no hovering and they didn't try to "speed us along" .... Prices were competitive. The wine list was organized well--from lowest price to highest price. The eclectic pairing of foods was exciting and different. The menu was not overwhelming, seasonal and delicious."

  • "We've eaten at the Ryland Inn for many years but Sunday's mean there was the best ever. First, at the bar, there was a great choice of cocktails and mixed drinks served by a highly knowledgable gentleman behind the bar. I had a Tanqueray and tonic - the tonic being made at the Ryland Inn and it was superbe. So good that I had a second one. Our food was outstanding - taste, texture, temperature, everything was just right. I've had many good meals at the Ryland Inn but this was the best. The Inn is really delivering an outstanding experience."

  • "The Ryland Inn is a beautiful venue to visit. The service is impeccable, the drinks are generous, the noise level is civilized. The amuse bouche and end-of-meal assorted sweets are excellent and fun. We had the black cavatelli and pear/frisee/bleu cheese salad for starts - both excellent. We had the medium-rare rib steak w/ side order of creamed spinach. Although the steak was very good, soft as prime should be and cooked to perfection, we were disappointed in its lack of flavor. It was good meat and well-prepared but did not measure up to similar meals one has in NYC. Perhaps it's the lack of charring? The creamed spinach was bland, and unseasoned . We will return to this lovely venue. Barbara & Sheldon Roskin Scotch Plains, NJ"
