I agree with many of the other reviewers: 1) first impression was that the Ryland Inn is an old traditional restaurant with older clientele 2) food is excellent fine dining but service has a long way to go to catch up and 3) the dining room is noisy. Waiting to be seated, the piano player in the bar was an older gentlemen playing to a room of older clientele. Now, we're are not that young but felt like to youngest ones there. After being seated, we waited at least 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Bad start. Appetizers were very good. The Duck entree was excellent as was the salmon except for the bone. For that you would have gotten "Chopped". Chocolate dessert was also excellent. Service was spotty throughout. Not the professional fine dining service needed to elevate the experience. We will return for the food but if service doesn't improve, may be the last. Also, they need to attract a younger crowd to be successful in the long run.

I used to eat at the Ryland Inn when I was a child. It is wonderful to see it restored. My husband and I went for our anniversary. I had hoped to have a more romantic seat but didn't! The building was beautiful and the staff/service impeccable! The menu had limited choices. One soup, one salad etc. The entree portions were very small yet pricey. Nothing on the menu made your mouth water unfortunately. The manager took off the price of our drinks without asking because they were unsatisfactory. I liked the food under the previous chef Craig Shelton better. Therefore I might recommend it to others, but certainly not everyone.

We chose the Ryland Inn as our dinner spot with another couple because the four of us had dined there more than 10 years ago when it was operated under Craig Shelton. My wife and I had also been to the Inn more recently for an absolutely fabulous wedding/reception and found the renovations to have been very well done .... almost magical in fact. We toured the bar and restaurant then and were convinced to return. On the evening of our latest visit, we were warmly greeted and then enjoyed the bar for an unhurried drink. Unfortunately, the music being played on the sound system was jarring and not at all in-keeping with the ambiance. We were then comfortably seated in a dining section with lots of glass and a handsome fireplace. Our waiter, Daniel, was great. Generally, one could pick from the menu blind and be very happy. Appetizers were well prepared and thoughtfully served. I had a seasonal harvest soup that was delicious. On the main, the entrees were very good/excellent. My venison was perfectly prepared with tasty accompaniments. However, my wife was seriously disappointed in her Berkshire pork dish, described as both cured and seared. It was under-cooked and tough. Desserts on the other hand were scrumptious .... my wife's brioche bread pudding and homemade pear ice cream almost got her to forget her entree. Despite the glitches, our treatment was wonderful and we left smiling.

This was our first visit since it reopened. Service was unpolished sporadic and SLOW. Food was ok but not worth the upscale prices. We felt they are trying to be something they aren't. They need a lot more attention to detail and to train their wait staff to equal what one expects in a restaurant which this one aspires to be. It will be a long time before we return

I made a reservation to celebrate a special event. The Fri night live music started at 7pm and was much too loud and definitely not the genre of music expected. It sounded like a loud country bar, instead of a sophisticated, high priced restaurant. If there is to be any live music, it should be low key, background music that doesn't drown out the conversation or make the restaurant event a negative experience. I would definitely not return if live music is present.

This was a 50th Bday The wine selection was wonderful the bottle of Stag's leap was nice. We loved the scallops appetizer and octopus appetizer. My husband loved his Halibut dish I ordered the Skate fish and the presentation was nice and cream sauce was delicious, however it was way too salty! Our father ordered the duck entree it was tender but it was lacking overall, maybe it needed to be cut thinner and the the sauce improved. Vegan entree could have been a little bit more deliciously creative in both their appetizer and entree. We noticed that the service was a slow (there 3 hours) and we were told that it was short staffed that evening plus there was a wedding going on. Our server could have been more enthusiastic. Thank you

Our first time back to the re-opened Ryland inn under new chef Craig Polignano started off really well. Excellent ambiance, great service, very romantic, and the outdoor seating area was perfect for that evening. We ordered the tasting menu with wine, which began very well, and the first course of lobster was excellent. However, of the rest of the courses, the only one I can recommend is the salmon & pork belly. The tuna felt overcooked, the beef was undercooked, and the pheasant was quite "blah." The dessert courses were better, but overall the tasting menu felt "too heavy" and it felt more like a sampling menu as opposed to a well planned tasting menu. Overall, the experience was wonderful, but I'd suggest skipping the tasting menu.

First, we had to wait 15 minutes for our 8 PM reservation. Then, after we were seated, it took another 15 minutes for anyone to even come over to the table for a drink order, and then an ETERNITY to get our cocktails. The restaurant is a bit (or several bits) pretentious, but the food, while expensive, was excellent. Possible the best breat of duck I've ever had, and their grilled salmon was equally outstanding. Though the setting of the Inn is gorgeous, the room we were in was very stark. Everything was wood, no drapes or carpet to absorb sound, so it was noisier than it should have been, and it had a "dated" look. The food made it easy to overlook some flaws, though better service would have really elevated the review to outstanding.

We arrived 5 minutes early and were seated immediately. And then waited 10 minutes to be acknowledged. There was a gentleman at a nearby table who did not stop talking. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings, which was unimaginative and similar to the tasting menu we had earlier in the year.

When making the reservation I asked specifically for a private table as some of the deuces are not. When I was contacted to confirm I repeated the request. When we arrived; and it was not that busy we were seated at one of the tables that I had asked not to have. The food was very good but as has been my experience here 5 times now the service is just not that good. A training program that would be commensurate with the prices is in order.

I was looking for a special restaurant, in my home area, that I recently moved to. I had found the Ryland Inn among the "Top 25 NJ Restaurants" list, research provided by njmonthly.com, and just had to see what was being offered. I'll start off with giving credit to whomever wrote the review for njmonthly.com because they were spot on. The courses were well thought out and executed with precision, never wondering what the chef was thinking when pairing ingredients. I won't describe the courses and divulge my opinion of each. I'll just state that the establishment ought to be visited. Pricing is a bit high, but not high for this caliber of artistry. Chef Craig Polignano is sure to delight your senses!

The meal was better then expected (we fine dine all the time). Two items were exceptionally good, if you go you must try them: Beef Tartare (prepared with a magical egg york (cooked to a butterscotch consistency) and the Red Snapper Crudo (one of the best tasting things I have had). We sat inside, however, they have large and warm patio area, with bar and a band was playing.

While the chef is clearly excellent, the quality of the ingredients is amazing. The greens taste like they were picked 30 minutes before they were put on your plate. The pork is probably the finest I have eaten in 66 years. And the honey, which my wife and I don't typically enjoy but which accompanied the cheese, was perfection. We were told the honey comes for the inn's own bee hive, and the flowers they grow for the bees change with the seasons and so the honey taste even changes. Now that is attention to detail and a love of food. Every single bite we took was flawless from the ricotta to the scallops to the gnocchi to the chicken to the pork and finally to the incredible desserts.

WOW—we took my parents to the Ryland for the first time for their 55th wedding anniversary--cannot say enough good things about our experience! Six of us dined in the chef’s room enjoying their seven course tasting menu paired with wine. The food was a work of art, presented beautifully and tasted delicious. Chef and his staff did a phenomenal job creating an enjoyable journey for the palette--without a doubt we will be returning to the Ryland.

This was my first time dining at The Ryland since Chef Craig has taken the helm. There was definitely a vast improvement in presentation, creativity and flavor of food from my previous experiences there. My girlfriend and I both had the tasting menu and were absolutely blown away. Service was fantastic from the Somm down through the service staff. Wine list and food prices are very reasonable given the quality. The ambiance at the Ryland cant be beat and seems like they are really living up to their full potential with the recent changes in the kitchen.

this dinner was a special going away dinner, and we were seated at the chef's table which is in a wonderful little room off the kitchen. Chef Polignano really took care of us with with a phenomenal tasting menu. We enjoyed two fabulous bottles of wine, and were so excited to find out that Tuesday is half price bottle day! From the amuse, which was a sparklingly fresh raw fluke in ponzu, to the trio of remastered American classics (reuben, pig in a blanket, and buffalo wings), to the wonderful heirloom tomato salad, each course dazzled and delighted. We'd been to the old Ryland Inn and always loved but this was our first time back since the remodel. What a lovely lovely place! Beautiful restaurant, very delicious food, but the service lacked just a little bit. For instance, the first server with a plate of rolls walked right past us but then served the table right next to us. 2 minutes later another person showed up with a plate of rolls but reached over us to serve them. So easy to walk to other side of table but you don't reach across one person to get to next one! Just little things but if a restaurant in the middle of nowhere NJ can charge a minimum of $100pp, it's the little things that make a BIG difference!

    Dined on 8/30/2014
Last minute booking, trying to find a different restaurant. My husband and I are foodies and love to dine at different restaurants. The bar was OK. We requested to seat outside, there are just a few tables outside with no ambiance. Our server took forever to welcome us, we had to ask the manager for our menus and after asking 2 waitresses for it we finally got them. We had the squash risotto, which had no taste and my husband had the chicken, which was just average. We never asked for spring water, but were charged for it. When I mentioned it to the manager, he didn't seem to care. I don't mind paying for something I ordered, but it's the principle of just charging us. We took the water we never order when we left, since we had to pay for.
