Diner Reviews
  • "A creative and seasonal menu. The food was both simple and complex and perfectly combined."

  • "But I still miss the "old" Ryland Inn. If you're from the area & remember the old days (dating back to the 80s even) it's hard to compare. But the reincarnation is a good come back. I'm happy to see the beautiful property up & running again! Our meal was good. A few misses here & there but overall a very nice experience. Ordered a specialty cocktail & bartender outside said oh we don't have any more of that syrup. Odd it was a Saturday night?!? Who's overseeing prep of the $13 drinks? Grilled calamari was interesting combo of flavors that somehow worked & was cooked to perfection. Gnocchi was salty & soupy. Halibut was cooked to perfection but over seasoned. Short ribs were excellent. Service fantastic and sommelier very accommodating."

  • "After creating a reservation and being called to confirm we were shown table 51 for our 45th anniversary, notice of which was part of the reservation. I rate restaurants on atmosphere, service, food, and price. Note the Ryland Inn was one of our favorite restaurants before its tragic closing and reopening. Table 51 offers NO atmosphere, in a pretty restauarant, The restaurant was 1/3 to 1/2 full. A premium restaurant should know how to make a perfect Manhattan especially if it charges $19 for a drink . It does not. A strawberry salad should contain more than 1 strawberry My halibut was fine this portion size was dainty. Dessert was good. Armagnac was not available. Overall not the experience we expected to be able to celebrate."

  • "This was a special treat in which for a couple of hours my wife were able to enjoy the lifestyle of the rich and famous. We enjoyed and appreciate the hard work of the staff in making our anniversary special without knowing the occasion"

  • "Chef's Tasting Menu hit all the high points on the taste-sensation wheel. Odd and unusual flavors paired with multiple textures like sweet peas and carrots with vanilla cream and tarragon broth as a palate cleanser. Savory salmon with pastrami seasoning to mimic and play with the traditional pastrami deli sandwich. Rich, tender lamb bites melted in our mouths. Fabulous experience, especially nice for our own celebration!"

  • "Our meal was close to being great but it missed on texture and treatment. The seared tuna with pork belly would have been fabulous if the pork belly was fried crispy. The poached duck egg on the tagliatelle was overwhelmed by the sauce. The dishes were undifferentiated and almost too much of the same consistency to finish. The ingredients were all there for fabulous but the meal just was not."

  • "This was our second visit to the Ryland Inn in the last year and we again had an amazing experience. This time we brought some friends to celebrate their recent marriage and enjoy our time before they move away. The food was all perfectly prepared, the cooking temperatures just right, and the accompaniments fit the dishes perfectly. We love that this restaurant utilizes local ingredients from local farms and changes the menu to fit the season. Though the prices are high, for us this is a very special occasion type of place, which makes us enjoy it all the more. If you can get a table on the outdoor patio in the summer - it is beautiful out there and just a wonderful location."

  • "Restaurant acoustics required us to yell across the table to be heard. Add to that a piano and vocals from the bar and it was impossible to have a conversation. Eliminate the music on busy nights as the restaurant is already loud. The noise overwhelmed the food."

  • "We went there to celebrate a birthday. I asked for a candle on the dessert, I was assured it would be done - did not! My fish was under cooked, had to send it back and was still not done right! My water glass was completely empty before someone refilled it. The service was only satisfactory. Very noisy, a lot of coming and going by the staff, not a relaxing atmosphere. I used to frequently go the old Ryland Inn and was always satisfied with the food and service."

  • "Our table had the tasting menu. Some of the courses were amazing. A couple were only okay. The portions were a bit on the small side. We were still hungry at the end of the meal. Overall it was a wonderful experience. The wine pairings were awesome!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at this wonderful restaurant. We loved the fact that when we asked to be seated outside, the restaurant was very accommodating. It was a beautiful evening, in a beautiful setting. Food was terrific!! Highly recommend"

  • "It was a special occasion for us and everything was just perfect. We started with specialty drinks at the bar and a wonderful discussion with the bartender. Our meal was delicious and the service was attentive. It's great to have the Ryland Inn back!"

  • "Was a bit bummed that the entire table must order the tasting menu, was looking forward to that. However, what we ordered was very delicious & portion size was decent. Only bad item was my coffee, they forgot to bring it out though they served rest of table. Would go again."

  • "very noisy; and it took us 3 hours to eat, way too long. They try hard, almost too hard, to be all things to all people. They had a big event, a full dinning room, a bar, and a band. Fortunately far apart. But the noise just from the dinning room made it hard to hear my companions, and was the worst part of the evening. Staff was stretched too thin, and delivery of food uneven. Waited too long between courses and for simple requests. Portions a reasonable size, which is fine. Prices high enough to warrant better service, and a quieter room. Too many hard surfaces bouncing the sound around."

  • "We first visited the Ryland Inn in 1993 to celebrate our 5th Anniversary and then again a few years later. Moved out of the area but when I heard of the restoration we knew we had to come back. A beautiful setting, just as wonderful as I remember. Presentation was 1st class and the dining experience from start to finish exceeded our expectations for this special occasion."

  • "We have been there twice lately, and each time, the food has been just outstanding. Bravo to the chef and his team. This time we had grilled squid, market salad, red snapper crudo, scallops and halibut. We are not red meat eaters, but at the table next to us, all four had meat and they raved about it. It is unfortunate that the service is not at the same quality as the food. The first time the waiter was particularly clueless about the menu. This time the waiter was nice, but not as professional or knowledgeable as you would expect from a restaurant of this quality. Hopefully, the service will get better, because that is the only thing holding the restaurant back from being one of the top 2-3 in NJ. The food is already at that level."

  • "The food was absolutely delicious. We had the tasting menu and every course was excellent, and would love to have more of the uni mousse amuse. Will definitely return for more of the cuisine. However, the service was not of the same quality. It seemed as though they were understaffed, though they must have known from reservations that they had a full house. Though all of the servers were warm and welcoming, water glasses went empty; we had to pour our own wine; and clearing was inconsistent."

  • "First time back for my family since the Inn reopened and we can't wait to go back. The service was outstanding and the meal was off the charts. Party of 5 and all ordered different entrees and they were all wonderful."

  • "Every dish we got was fantastic. One person got the short ribs a year ago and since making these reservations, she started craving them. They were still fantastic. The only negative is - each course came out very quickly with not much time between. The bread arrived after we were half way through the appetizers. I understand the petit fours are served last but they came out way too long after we were done with our dessert and our coffee/tea. During the meal there were times when we felt forgotten and other times when we felt rushed. The food is wonderful and we will definitely be back, they just need to work on the timing."

  • "The venue is stunning, the staff friendly and responsive without doting, the food was good. My only comment would be that the menu is a bit "fussy" and the descriptions of the dishes are too cute and try too hard to be exotic. After reading the breathless prose of the menu, we chose steak. The scallop and gnocchi mid courses were excellent and the steaks were perfect but it was impossible to get a simple salad. The asparagus side was delectable. My test of the bar is whether they can make my favorite drink, a Bombay Sapphire martini up with a slice of lim it should be cold. This one was perfect with a thin slice of lime instead of the wedge often provided. The Cabernet by the glass was well chosen and a generous pour."

  • "My memories of the Ryland Inn were almost 20 years old but I'm pleased to see them back and serving up great farm to table fare, with impeccable service. The Chef Tasting menu was excellent, well timed and a real treat - with wine recommendations that were spot on. The first course of yellowfin tuna sashimi with foie gras really set the stage and was excellent. Service was professional and attentive without being rushed nor cloying. Prices run high, as they always have, but the Inn is more inclusive than before and worth a special night."

  • "We entertained a small group of friends, one with culinary training. The menu offerings were imaginative and tasty. The service was first class. We had a wonderful experience and especially liked the fact that the dress code was casual to formal, everyone is accepted and it creates a comfortable experience. We would highly recommend to foodies and wine lovers."

  • "This was our sixth visit sine the Inn reopened and the experience has improved each time - particularly the service. We tried the tasting menu for the first time and it was superb. A great place to celebrate a birthday (which we did) or anniversary. Can't wait for the patio to open."

  • "We ate here prior to the flood. The new menu seems a bit more modern and farm-to-table which we liked. Not as stuffy and quiet as it was under the previous owners. The grilled octopus appetizer was the best part of the meal. I had the tuna entree and it was delicious also. The service was fabulous. "

  • "Change can be good or strange. We haven't been to Ryland Inn in several years. We liked the relaxed atmosphere, service was terrific. BUT, a lounge singer singing "White Room" by Cream???? It was disconcerting to say the least. Covers of Billy Joel, Elton John, Tony Bennett, etc. would be less jarring. Food on the whole was excellent, except some of the plating was too deconstructed and "precious". Pear salad components were in a line. Composed would make for better flavors.; Coconut cheese cake again deconstructed, hanging around the rim of a huge dinner plate. It should be billed as cheese cake with coconut flakes and coulis. Small things, I know, but it took away from the overall experience."

  • "The Ryland Inn was a beautiful setting for their Mother's Day brunch (although we ate at 5 pm). The banquet room is awesome. The food was great. A wide variety of items so the diner could choose breakfast, lunch or dinner items. Service was very good. The only downside was that a few food items had been in the buffet too long when we went through the first time. They had all been replaced by fresh items when we went back for seconds. Maybe it was just poor timing on our part?"

  • "This was the first time we dined here since the original Ryland Inn closed. The new incarnation cannot compare in any way. The food, service & ambiance were just "good". We were very disappointed & will not return. We went for Mother's Day at 4:45. Neither the Ryland Inn's website nor OpenTables mentioned that there would only be a buffet for Mother's Day. food, just mediocre . There were two risotto dishes, neither of which was creamy, no poultry other than the standard carving board turkey. Some of the seafood did not taste fresh. Desserts were mostly custardy little creations. We had a choice of sitting in a ballroom or an area that was somewhat like a hallway. The nicer rooms were not used on this occasion."

  • "Took my mother here for Mothers Day. Food and service are top notch. Wine list has a good variety, both in styles and prices. Most definitely worth every penny. "
    Dined on 5/10/2014
  • "We were very disappointed with our Mothers Day experience. The main dining room was not being used-not sure why.. so all the tables were set up in the banquet space (which we were not aware of). It had a banquet feel. We were seated for 15-20 minutes before we finally had to flag a waiter to take a drink order and the room was not crowded. Unfortunately we were not told it would be a buffet so maybe the food is better on a regular evening but we felt it was average. The chilled seafood was great but most of the entrees were your average buffet fare and at $65/person without drinks we expected a lot more from a restaurant of this caliber."
