Diner Reviews
  • "We went for Sunday brunch, which offers a sampling of many of my childhood favorites. The peirogis and crock pickles were stellar. Will return to experience the regular menu. Thinking we would enjoy that even more. Looking forward to sampling one of the many many infused vodkas. Lace table cloths, samovars and pictures of what could have been anyone's grandparents made the experience authentic. Was a birthday meal and I was suprised by a song and piece of cake. Lovely, but even as a youth, Eastern European desserts were never a stong suit. (Perhaps I was always too full from the meal). Our servers, even during the buffet, were attentive and helpful."

  • "very authentic Russian - not Americanized at all - so be prepared!"

  • "This was my first experience at a Russian restaurant and everything about it was great - from the art in the bar area to the tchockes in the dining area, to the infused vodkas, to the food. It didn't feel like a 'theme' restaurant either - something a corporation pulled together to give diners a Russian 'experience.' No, this felt like a family-run restaurant with decorations from someone's grandparents. Food servers were knowledgeable and seemed to be from Russia or Eastern Europe themselves. I was a little worried about limited food selection as someone who doesn't eat meat - fortunately there were several veggie and fish options that were quite good. The complementary vodka at the start of the meal got things off to a great start!"

  • "We went to the Sunday lunch buffet, $25 a head. Selections included four hot dishes several salads and appetizers, 2 soups, and a variety of breads. All were very good and authentic as far as we remember from our time in various former Soviet Republics and Russia. (Though the borscht was unlike any we had ever had anywhere Ukraine included. Had chicken and no cabbage.) The dining room is quite nice and Russian knick knacks are all over the place. Service was excellent even though it was a buffet. It's pricey especially considering the selection, but buffet price is in line with their regular menu prices, and it's the only place to get authentic Russian food in the city. For a family 5 we'll only be able to go on special occasions."

  • "We took a chance and went here to celebrate, instead of typical steak dinner. And it was such a fun experience!! We sampled some vodkas, ate lots of yummy food, and had a really fun and unique time. I love the miss matched dinning room. It feels very warm and homey. We also went outside of peak hours and had the dining room to ourselves. This will be a special place for my husband and me. We came here one other time during free tango lesson night and had a good time."

  • "Never disappointing. The food is always wonderful and the staff is always so great! Service is a little slow but that is because they make everything from scratch so it takes way longer to do everything, come in and plan on sitting back for a while. Enjoy many infused vodka's and enjoy the ambiance."

  • "This was the third attempt to go to Russian House and it was a little slice of Russia. The food was amazing and very much worth the price."

  • "My son is into Russia, so we went to The Russian House for his birthday dinner. They had a bunch of Russian/soviet coats and uniforms in the front. He had fun trying them on. We ordered dinner and waited for a really long time. They did bring out some complementary shots of vodka, which were interesting. We all got our food except my son, who ordered the chicken dinner that never came. They came out and said their was a mix up, and gave us a complementary dessert for the table. The rest of the dinners were okay, not great."

  • "We went to the Russian House with a small group of friends on a Saturday nite. We found the food to be excellent and authentic. The wait staff was very charming, knowledgeable and attentive. The music was SO LOUD that we literally had to yell to hear each other. The music-- rock--detracted from the ambiance of the meal and was not at all what you would expect in this type of restaurant. We did stay till 11:15! We would love to sample more of the menu, but we would go only if we were sure there was to be NO music."

  • "The loud music from bar area overwhelmed our dining experience. We had trouble having a conversation. Otherwise, a fun time - food and service excellent."

  • "Having been to Russia, I felt the restaurant was very authentic, as was the food. We tried several dishes and thought the borsch most tasty. The rest of the food was ok, but very unusual mixtures - but, that is how it is likely served in Russia. My advice is that you can get a good Russian experience here (the waiter even had a heavy accent & wore Russian style clothing). Just don't expect the food to taste like we eat in America."

  • "We went the Saturday after Valentines Day. The place was pretty cool and they had a bunch of Russian costumes that you could try on and take your picture next to a pretty large stuffed bear. This gave us something to do while we waited for quite a while to be seated even though we had a reservation, which was frustrating. The bar area was neat but there wasn't enough seating. Our server was attentive and the food was pretty good. I had the eggplant roll app which was awesome and the mixed meat kabob skewer. Lots of seasoning and a spicy dipping sauce. My husband had the hand made Pelimi and all it is , is a tiny clay pot with small dumplings stuffed with a meat of your choice. Not enough to feed a 6 ft, 265 pound man."

  • "This restaurant provides everything I look for when dining out at an establishment with a cultural theme. I make eating out a habit in this city and others, and I rarely am so pleased with every aspect of a place. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing. The cocktail I had was one of the best I had in Austin. The important thing to remember is to make reservations!"

  • "The hubby and I went there for a Valentine's Day/anniversay night out. There was a live band which was a nice difference but definitely raised the noise level. The food was different, but reasonably good. The menu was limited because of Valentine's Day. I would have preferred different or more choices. My hubby says won't go back."

  • "If you have more then four in your party try the private room in the back! This place is so AMAZING! It is my favorite spot in Austin by far! While it is a little on the pricey side it is not over priced. The portions are huge so share an entree! The flavored shots are wonderful so ask your server to help you with picking which one will compliment your dish."

  • "Eh. It was a fun one time experience to try some Russian food. Not my favorite. The cold apps aren't the greatest. The special salad with duck liver was good, as was the lamb in special sauce entree. Drinks are tasty but seemed a little light in the alcohol. One and done for me on this restuarant."

  • "We decided to try this restaurant with friends for a new adventure in dining and The Russian House delivered! We each got appetizers and something different for dinner and shared. It was a wonderful way to sample all the goodies this restaurant has to offer. The service was excellent, the ambience with the lace tablecloths and a lovely mix of different plates and silverware made it unique. Thumbs up from our group!"

  • "A great experiencing dining. Music in the main room. Great, energetic. But the back dining area could be closed off. Open, or closed, we had easy conversation, great service, and very knowledgeable staff. I would certainly do again. Be prepared for a very savory, and heavy, brunch. Lighter fare is available. Dessert was great. Food overall was great. Highly recommend."

  • "We went for the Georgian Cuisine Week. The dinner consisted of 3 coursed: soup, entree, and dessert. The soup (harcho) was really good. The entree (cold chicken) was frankly just something you don't ever want to eat again. And the dessert was a joke. The Georgian wine that accompanied the main course was great. The service was odd (I still don't know if they aim for the typical Russian service on purpose). This was my second time at the Russian House, and now I know for sure I'm not going back. Such a waste of money and time. It might be good for people who don't really know the Russian cuisine, but for a Russian it's a bit pathetic."

  • "The ambiance and food were unique and fun. The broad selection of Russian dishes provided many options. What we had was very good and had lots of Vodka with it. The only negative was the carry in of the noise from the bar was quite loud."

  • "I took some clients to dinner here. None of us had ever been to The Russian House, so we didn't know what to expect. I was a bit apprehensive at first b/c it felt like I walked into a bar, with loud music & concrete floors. Behind the bar, are about 100 different infused vodkas, w/some really interesting flavors. We had a good time checking those out. Then for dinner, you go to this back room that is closed off from the bar, and has the feel of a very quaint tea house. The server was great, and had a thick accent, which led to the feeling of an authentic experience. The food was fabulous! Everybody got something different, and everybody LOVED their meals. I highly recommend this place!!"

  • "Restaurant has a very interesting admosphere. Walk through Russian bar, and get your table in a back room that is decorated like a traditional Russian home. Service is very friendly and engaged with costumers. Food is alright, but is good for a change and to try a different cuisine. If you have late reservations on a weekend, be aware there is a life band that is Likud enough to beard in the dinning room."

  • "I was born in USSR and was so happy to get back all warm memories of my youth. And I never relized how much I did miss this kinda food as my favourite black caviar, borsch, golubzy and cup of jot tea with Napoleon cake :))) My daughter Diana was sooo much happy to have chicken shashlyk. Also I'm glad my texan family did like Russian House food as they had Chicken Chahohbili, Blini roll with beef, Pelmeni, Beef shadhlyk and for dessert Drunken ice-cream, Halva... all were so delucious... Our server was so cute and nice... glad to make my order in russian language :).. I felt like I'm home , in Kazakhstan :)))"

  • "I went here to celebrate my roomie's birthday with a few other friends. I had made a reservation, and the table was ready to go when we arrived, which was great. It was a very lively atmosphere with live music and Soviet TV playing, which was great. The food was fantastic. We had a variety of appetizers and several entrees, and they were all perfectly cooked and delicious. The only issue is that the service is a bit inattentive. We had to wait a long time (more than 15 mins) for our server to check on us for refills and bring us the check. One of my friends had to leave early to move her car before the meter ran out because the server took so long with the check. Overall, a great place. Just need to work on the service time a bit. :)"

  • "We had a great time here! We were seated in a private room with carpets hung on the walls... great ambiance!! It was a Saturday night, so they had live music sung in Russian... super interesting! (It was a little bit too loud though) It is a wonderful place to try out some new types of food... each dish we ordered was well prepared and delicious. We definitely want to go back and work our way through the menu. Great drink selection of infused vodkas... and please, get the kiev cake... just get it. Soo good!"

  • "This was a dining experience, not just a meal! The food was authentic Russian and very interesting and fun. Our waitress was from Russia and was very knowledgeable about the menu. We were there with another couple, and we all just loved the atmosphere, the food, the fun drinks, and the whole ambiance. Definitely recommend highly."

  • "My family and I like to experience different kinds of foods and cultures. We have been doing this for years, have traveled the world and tasted many foods, but going to the Russian House was by far the best ever! The service was excellent and our waitress Katia was amazing and fun. Our food was delicious and different and the decor of the small private room was perfect for our family. The live music added fun to the evening and top it all off, we had our pictures taken dressed in Soviet era clothing!. I recommend this place to everyone. Great experience!."

  • "My husband and I went there to celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary. We wanted something memorable, and we weren't disappointed! . My husband ordered the stuffed vegetables, and I ordered an appetizer of blini stuffed with salmon, cream cheese and cucumber, along with a bowl of the cold borscht soup. The blinis were incredible! The soup was tasty and filling, and the stuffed vegetables warm and savory. Our server -- a Russian! -- was outstanding, very helpful about explaining the menu. They even served us a complimentary napoleon dessert in honor of our anniversary. I heartily recommend "The Russian House.""

  • "Potatoes, meat, vodka.... As cliche as it would seem that all Russian for consists of those 3 things it's what makes the cuisine so yummy & exciting & I don't mind cliches. Great spot. Felt like I was an explorer on an exotic quest."

  • "Outstanding food and great atmosphere. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. We ate there with a reservation on Christmas Day partly due to available choice. We enjoyed the experience and the only reason not to go back is that it was so good that it would be hard to exceed the great time we had there. The atmosphere is a little eclectic but adds to the charm of the place. Russian militsia coats in the cloak closet, glass display cabinet on the wall with odd souvenirs of Russia etc. They put the tree in the middle of the restaurant, unusual for a limited space, but it served to make the area more broken up and intimate. Could write review but apparently this is not desired as i am out of characters."

  • "We had reservations for Christmas day. As always reservations are handled perfectly. The restaurant was decorated very nicely for the holiday. The complimentary roasted duck and apple pie were fabulous. We ordered one of every appetizer for our group of 4, as well as Christmas infused vodka and several very good bloody marys. Our Main courses were cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. Its all the little extras that you dont expect that make Russian House my favorite place to dine in Austin."

  • "OpenTable reservation site indicated that for Christmas the Russian House offered a buffet with champagne and caviar for a fixed price. When we arrived and inquired we were informed that this information was inaccurate. We have no idea you was at fault for this frustrating misinformation, but please make a better effort to ensure that the information you place on OpenTable is accurate."

A unique restaurant that successfully combines high quality dining and service with a laid-back, fun and playful atmosphere; the restaurant is decorated like a Babushka's village house :) Extremely friendly staff! We will be coming back soon!"
