Diner Reviews
  • "This place is great for drinks and light fare with friends. Food is perfect for goodies, and the presentation was artful, The hostess was more than accommodating after I added one more to my party, making for an awesome birthday dinner."

  • "Always wonderful. The food here is unique thanks to well trained Chef Matt's experience and creativity. Small plates offer the opportunity to share a few dishes and sample the excellence. This time I had the short ribs, thinly sliced and delicious. My wife had a crab cake that was also excellent. All the pairings are well suited to the dish. The special bread pudding was remarkable."

  • "Our 3rd dining experience and the food is consistently unique, interesting and delicious. We enjoy sharing the dishes and discussing the exceptional flavors, ingredients and presentations. Love the infused vodkas too! Very enjoyable evening and Jesse, our waiter, was spectacular. It has a quaint feeling and well worth the hour drive for us each time."

  • "Excellent menu for a Valentine 6 course dinner. Service outstanding and very interesting matching of wines with courses. First time dinners and we will return. Every course was a delight. Oysters were especially delicious and well as the main course and the deserts. A salad with an egg on it was wonderful and tasty."

  • "My girlfriend and I tried this place out for a valentine day late night dinner. We were not disappointed! The service was outstanding. The chef came out to greet us several times, made us feel special and important. The food was also outstanding down to the coffee! The menu will change due to the special vday, so I look forward to going back again to see what else they have to offer. If you go, you won't be disappointed."

  • "Chef Matthew is a magician in the kitchen. From tuna tartar to signature house made vodkas you just can't go wrong with the Rumor Mill. Every dish is thoughtful and creative. And BOY is Chef Matthew creative. Arugula pesto! Who would have thought?! The specials really ARE special. We can't wait for the farmer's markets to open again and get all the new tasty dishes they create with fresh local foods. We have been visiting The Rumor Mill since it opened. It is our favorite place to dine and we are always recommending it to everyone. We have never had a dish we did not thoroughly enjoy."

  • "The wife tried a strawberry lemonade vodka, and was relatively satisfied, she was much happier with the regular strawberry lemonade. I had an adult root beer which was fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only thing that was absolutely terrible was the crem brule, with a burnt sugar top. The cilantro beef was flavorless and sitting in oil. The honey miso scallops tasted like over cooked very salty scallops, the duck and cherries was alright, the duck tasted like rather dry white meat turkey. The shrimp and potatoes dish as well as the cashew salad were in fact good, shrimp was okay potatoes were delicious and the cashew salad was definitely tasty. For what we got, it was not even close to worth the hundred dollars the meal cost."

  • "Located in an old building in Ellicott City, this restaurant has a real old country feel - it would not be out of place in a French or Italian village. The chef's preparations are tasty, interesting and fun; the small plates designed to be shared. We had lovely ribs - the best dish of the ones we tried - and the tempura mushrooms were a hit. Leave room for dessert, presented, like the other dishes, creatively and in portions that won't derail one's diet. Our waitress, Holly, was a delight! Attentive, fun and totally enthusiastic about the food."

  • "The food was delicious. Brussel sprouts were a surprising highlight. The staff brought a dish someone else had ordered to us by mistake. My husband, thinking it was what he had ordered, started eating it. Two bites in, the staff realized it was a mistake and brought him the correct dish, but by then he had already eaten some, and he does not normally eat pork. The unfortunate mix-up put a real damper on an otherwise excellent meal."

  • "The food was (and is) always excellent. I'm never disappointed with my meal at Rumor Mill. We had the specials (3 kinds of hummus: kalamata olive, ricotta, spicy feta) Spicy feta was our favorite. We also had the seared bass over pasta, calamari and the miso- honey scallops. The best was the scallops! They were cooked perfectly and so delicious! :) We also had the pumpkin cheesecake....yum!"

  • "As we dined at the restaurant on Christmas Eve, we enjoyed items from the special "Feast of Seven Fishes" menu. Small plates allow everyone to enjoy a bite without the cumbersome "sharing" of entrees, and if you don't like the dish, then you are not married to it. If you like the dish, then the table can order a second. The prices are reasonable enough to allow this strategy."

  • "I had dinner here for the first time with my mom. The seating is upstairs and we sat by the railing overlooking the entrance which was nice. Our server was great and made excellent recommendations. I had the honey and fig bourbon which tasted great. We ordered the brussel sprouts, kobe beef sliders, scallops, and crab cake and they were all yummy, especially the brussel sprouts and scallops. We had the chocolate hazelnut mousse cake for dessert. My mom doesn't even like dessert and she ate most of it! We want to go back to try more!"

  • "i love Tapas style food service since it allows for that lovely broad scope of tastes of interesting foods and avoids the obligation of eating 'too much' of anything. At this intimate restaurant you also have the most fabulous versions of foods you know but never knew they could taste this good! The wait staff are knowledgeable and engaging in just the right degree you want during your meal. You feel like you are a true 'guest' here - and especially so when the chef/owner, Matt, makes a personal stop by your table just to let you know you are special and that your opinion of his food and 'house' is meaningful to him. I have taken various friends here and they always leave with enthusiastic praise for a great evening!"

  • "We dined here with another couple and ordered about 8 items to share. We especially enjoyed the brussel sprouts, the beet salad, the scallops, the tuna, the Kobe sliders and we each had yummy dessert which we all shared. The Apple Crips was the best we ever had and I really enjoyed the warm bread pudding as well!"

  • "The Rumor Mill is a great find. Chef is very creative & prepared a number of interesting, tasty dishes tapas-style, so we ordered a number of items to share and had a chance to try more things. Cilantro beef with cucumber slices was a stand-out. Wait staff is prompt, knowledgeable, but not overbearing. A group near us appeared to receive just the right amount of attention, too. Drinks are a highlight. Honey bourbon aged in a cask with ginger was wonderful, and the fruit infused vodkas were great. The bar was buzzing by the time we left. Be sure to use the new parking app for Ellicott City to find nearby parking."

  • "This is a true gem in the heart if historic Ellicott City, set back from Frederick Road and tucked into a corner by the water. Chef Matthew Milani offers a menu of eclectic, inventive small plates that include vegetarian, meat and seafood options. It's always hard to choose a favorite. Also of note are their vodka infusions and their exceptional bourbon drinks. The plates are served well times, and service is wonderfully attentive. Chef Matthew makes a point of stopping by tables to say hello. Ambiance is warm and comfortable. Don't miss this adorable, delicious spot in Howard County."

  • "We ate here on a Sun evening and were the only people dining. The staff was attentive and sweet. Food was was prepared though the meat dish was cold. Ribs are fantastic as was crab, and ginger pear salad. I don't understand why it was empty but it made dinner a bit disconcerting. Plan to try them again on a different night."

  • "Chef Matt came out to talk to us. We had to compliment him on his inventive mixes of savory and sweet, various mixes of textures and flavors that were great complements to one another. Small portions allowed us to mix it up and have tastings of all types of menu offerings. Matt's recipes are adventurous and explode with fresh and unique flavors and mouth feel. Holly was a great server and her suggestions were spot on. Unique, inventive, highly recommended!"

  • "Four of us shared a number of tapas plates. Everything was excellent. Very unique Brussels sprouts are cooked then flash fried ...makes them very good, the scallops were perfect, the two way cooked lamb also very tasty. The cream cheese and salmon dish is in a class by itself. This is must try."

  • "The Rumor Mill is definitely something different. This is not your average restaurant with typical American portions. Each dish is prepared beautifully and is a work of art. The quality is very high while the quantity is very small. Some people will not be pleased with this combination, but if you know what to expect, I think you can enjoy a superb meal."

  • "We wanted simple food, but yummy....hoping for a quiet evening....and that's what we got. Not a very big menu, but fresh ingredients prepared with a creative flair. Both of our salads were quite good, and we both enjoyed our entrees and desserts. Weekends here are usually busy, but we lucked out. The waitress was great and very helpful with our selections. We both definitely recommend this place."

  • "I went with my husband when our kids were with the grandparents. We had a very pleasant experience. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Our dishes were great overall. Not over the top, but very good. This was our first time here and thought the setting and decor were just okay. It was smaller than I expected."
